Seventeen

Emily's P.O.V

"We should get up." I say. JJ nods. "We should. I did kinda just run away from Josh and Jesse." She says. I nod. "And I ran away from your mother." I say. JJ laughs a little bit. "I don't blame you. I would have too." She says. "Why? I like your mother." I say. "Oh I love her. But she drives me freaking crazy." JJ says. "Jenny, when are you going to get married? When are you going to give me grandchildren? Why do you have to have such a dangerous job?" She says in a mocking tone. "She's just worried Jennifer. And apparently she wants you to have a family." I say. "I have a family." She says. I smile. "That's not what I meant." I say. "I know." She says.

I sit up and pull her up with me. "Come on. Let's go." I say as I stand up. JJ stands up after me and I pull her into a hug. "I love you." I say. She smiles and kisses my cheek. "I love you too baby." She says.

We walk out of the bedroom and down the hall to the kitchen where Sandy is waiting for us. "Are you okay Jenny?" She asks. JJ nods. "I'm fine mom. I'm gonna go back out with Josh and Jesse." She says. Sandy nods. "Okay. Have fun." She says. JJ nods and walks out of the house.

"I don't suppose you can tell me what that was all about, can you?" Sandy says. "Cramps." I say. Sandy nods. "Okay." She says. I sit down on the stool that I was on before JJ came inside and sigh. "You okay Emily?" Sandy asks. I nod. "Just tired." I say. "Are you sure?" She asks. I nod. "Okay." She says. "I'll be right back." I say.

I stand up and walk into the bedroom and sit on the bed. I pull out my phone and dial Garcia's number. It rings twice and she answers. "How's life in the Keystone State treating my girl?" She asks in a chipper voice. "It's good. How's Quantico?" I ask. "Lovely as always. What can I do for you?" She asks. "Can you find someone for me?" I ask. "You know I can. Who do you need?" She asks. "His name is Edward." I say. "Do I get a last name or do you want me to look up every Edward in the world?" She asks. I sigh. "Prentiss. His last name is Prentiss." I say. I hear typing. "Who is he? A brother? Uncle? Who?" She asks. "He's my father." I say quietly. "Edward Adrian Prentiss, born January 8, 1942, was married to ambassador Elizabeth Prentiss until their divorce in 1983, and now lives at 11684 Falcon Point Way in Manassas Virginia?" She asks. "He lives in Manassas?" I ask. "It says he's lived there for a year now. He bought the place in January 2014." She says. "Do you have access to the property records?" I ask. "You know I do." She says happily. "What do you want?" She asks. "A phone number." I say. "804-272-9765." She says. "Thanks Garcia." I say, as I hang up the phone.

I write the number down on a scrap piece of paper I find on the bedside table and stare at it. I get up and walk out to the kitchen and set the piece of paper down in front of Sandy. "What's that?" She asks. "That is my father's phone number." I say. "Have you called him?" She asks. I shake my head. "No." I say. "Do you want to?" She asks. "I'm not sure." I say. "When was the last time you saw him?" She asks. "When I was thirteen." I say. She nods. "I think you should call him. But talk to Jenny first. She doesn't like surprises." Sandy says.

I walk outside and see JJ, Josh and Jesse sitting in the grass by the wall that surrounds the pool. I walk over and tap JJ on the shoulder. "Can I talk to you for a minute?" I ask. She nods and walks back into the house with me.

We sit down on the bed and JJ looks at my face, concerned. "What's wrong Emily?" She asks. "I asked Garcia to find my father." I say. "I thought he was dead. You never talk about him." She says. "He left me and my mother when I was thirteen. He didn't like my mother's job, so he left." I say. "When was the last time you saw him?" She asks. "I was thirteen. I don't really even remember it though. He was signing so fast I could barely follow along." I say. "Signing?" She asks. I nod. "Yeah. He's deaf." I say. "Okay, so he just left?" She asks. I nod. "Did Garcia even find him?" She asks. I nod. "I have his phone number." I say, handing her the paper. "This is a Virginia number." She says. "Manassas." I say. "Do you want to call him?" She asks. "Kind of." I say. "So do it." She says. "What if I was the reason he left?" I ask quietly. "Em, I don't think it was you." She says. I laugh slightly. "You don't know what I was like. I was horrible. I never listened, I drank, a lot, I tried drugs, I got pregnant.." I trail off. "I didn't know that." JJ says. I nod. "I had an abortion." I say. "But he didn't take me with him." I say. "I think he did what he thought was best for you." She says. I nod. "I know. I just miss him. It's been thirty years and I still miss him." I say. JJ nods. "I know, which is why I think you should call him." She says. "I don't even know if he wants to hear from me." I say. "Call him Em. You never know until you try." She says. I nod. "Okay." I say. "Do you want me to stay?" JJ asks. "No." I say quickly. "Okay. I'm just outside with Josh and Jesse." She says. I nod and she leaves the room.

I really hope he has a phone with video chat so I can sign instead of having an interpreter in on the entire conversation. I dial the number and put the phone to my ear. It rings a few times before I hear a voice on the other end. The interpreter. "Hello?" The voice says. "Hi, can I put you on video chat so I can sign?" I ask. "Yes." The voice says. I take the phone away from my ear and prop it up on the night stand. The screen goes black for a second, and then his face appears on the screen. "Emily?" He signs. I nod. "Hi dad." I sign back. "How did you get my phone number?" He asks. "I asked a friend to find you." I say. He nods. "So you know where I am?" He asks. I nod. "Yes." I say. "I'm sorry I didn't try to contact you earlier. I should have." He says. "Yeah, you should have." I say. "How are you?" He asks. "Fine." I say. "Can I see you?" He asks. "I'd like that." I say. "When?" He asks. "When I get back to Virginia. I'm in Pennsylvania right now." I say. "Why?" He asks. "I'm visiting family." I say. "In Pennsylvania?" He asks. "I'm with my girlfriend." I say. "Do I get to meet her too?" He asks. "If she wants to come." I say. "When will you be back?" He asks. "Saturday." I say. "Can we meet Sunday?" He asks. I nod. "Where?" I ask. "It doesn't matter." He says. "You can come here?" He asks. "Okay." I say. "Do you have the address?" He asks. I nod. "Okay. So I'll see you then?" He asks. I nod. "Okay. I'll talk to you later Emily." He says. I nod and wave goodbye. The screen goes dark and I hang up the phone.

I let out a breath that I didn't realize I was holding and I stand up. I walk out to the kitchen and Sandy looks at me. "You okay?" She asks. I nod. "I'll tell you in a few minutes okay?" I say. She nods.

I walk outside and sit down in the grass slowly with JJ, Josh and Jesse. "How'd it go?" She asks. "He wants to see me. Sunday." I say. "Wow." She says. I nod. "Can you come with me?" I ask. She nods. "Of course." She says. "Thank you." I say. I turn to Josh and Jesse. "So what's goin' on out here?" I ask. "We were just talking about bear's transition from sister to aunt." Jesse says. I smile. "I think she'll be a great aunt." I say. "Of course you do." JJ says. I laugh. "Yep." I say. "I should probably go see if the pie is finished." I say as I stand up. "Have fun." JJ says.

I walk into the house just as the timer goes off. Sandy takes the pie out of the oven and set it on the stove. She takes the tin foil off the edges and calls me over. "You see the edges? Nice and golden brown?" She says. I nod. "This, is the perfect pie." She says. I smile. "How long do we have to wait before we eat it?" I ask. Sandy laughs. "About an hour." She says. "Okay." I say.

I sit down on a stool at the island and Sandy sits next to me. "So what happened with your father?" She asks. "He asked me to see him when we get back." I say. "Are you going to?" She asks. I nod. "Jennifer's going with me." I say. She nods. "That's good." She says. I nod. "I need her there." I say. Sandy smiles. "She loves you." She says. I smile. "I know." I say. "I've never seen her so happy." Sandy says. "I'm sure that's not true." I say quietly, looking away. "I'm serious Emily. She relaxes around you. She's constantly smiling. I've never seen her like that before." She says. I smile. "That's all I want." I say. Sandy smiles. "I just want her to be happy." I say. "She is. You know, she calls us every week. And almost every week she would just talk about you. I remember a few years ago, she said something about you going missing. She was so worried Emily." She says. "I know, something came up and I just ran away. It's kind of what I do best." I say. She nods. "What happens if something else comes up? What happens to Jenny?" She asks. "Sandy, I need you to understand something. I ran away to protect my team, and Jennifer. The man that I went after was going to kill all of them, I have no doubts about that. I also ran to protect that man's son, Declan. He's thirteen. Something that happened ten years ago came back to bite me in the ass, and now the man that was after me is dead, and Declan is safe. I did what I did to protect people, to protect Jennifer." I say. Sandy looks shocked for a second, but quickly recovers. "She was devastated. She had no idea where you were. I never want to see my daughter like that again." She says. I nod. "And you won't." I say. Sandy smiles slightly. "Good."
