Chapter 8
"Brother we need to talk…" Elijah insisted as he walked into the back room of the town hall. Klaus was throwing chairs and tables around the room, pieces of wood and metal were sent flying all over. Elijah stood by as his brother's fist punched a hole threw the stone wall. He narrowed his eyes. What was going on with him? Klaus flashed around the room breaking and creating havoc in the small confined space.
Elijah stood back watching his brothers anger fill the room.
Klaus flashed towards the wall. Caroline's words were taunting him. I…I…came to New Orleans to look for you…after you left Isla Nena…I came here for you…I fell in love with a coward.
He's a friend…nothing more…I gave my heart away a long time ago…
I gave my heart away a long time ago…I love you but I can't…my heart can't take your distrust…
Klaus eyes were golden burning with rage. His hands now in a tight fist were sent into the concrete wall. He punched the wall over and over. "Caroline…" He whispered. His hands burned from the pain he inflicted on himself. His hands full of blood and pieces of plaster. He punched and punched until he could not any longer. He slumped on the wall rubbing his hands over his throbbing head. He closed his eyes trying to block out all of the words that Caroline said. He tried to push them away but his heart was already contaminated with its poisonous effects. Her words…her pain…the shame he once again inflected in her was weighing on him. He knew he had to walk away from her but how could he. She once again is in his life. The pain of walking away from her almost broke him last time.
"Why are you doing this Niklaus? Why? Am I not enough for you?" Caroline said pleading.
"Caroline don't make this harder than it has to be…" Klaus said with an eyeful of tears. He
reached for her hands she took them away reluctantly.
"But why? Just tell me why?" Caroline said. A tear was falling down her face.
Klaus wiped the solitary tear from her face. "You know why." He said trying to smile.
"Why? Because someone is out there that seems to be more powerful than you?" She said
as cold as possible.
"Caroline…there is a pack out there that is trying to eliminate vampires. No one is safe. Not you
not me. I have to make sure that never happens. "
"Then what? After that pack is dead…what other war will you forge? What other threat needs to be eliminated? "
"That's not fair, love…"
"Fair…what do you know about fair?"
"Caroline…"
"Do you love me Klaus?" Caroline asked. "Do you…?"
"Caroline…you know I care for you…"
"Yes…but do you love me?"
"I…" Klaus lowered his eyes.
"What happened to the guy that professed to be my last love? What happened to the man that
made love to me and told me nothing was more important than us? Why Klaus? Why can't
you put aside your campaigns for war? Why can't you be with me for eternity…Why can't you
you be happy with me?" Caroline put her hands on the side of his face forcing him to look at her.
"Caroline…you mean the world to me but there are things I have to do…why can't you see that?
Come with me…be by my side…"
"I…can't…not now…" Caroline lowered her hands and held her stomach protectively.
"But why?" Klaus said as he searched her face for the reason.
"I can't….I…." Caroline said.
"You can't or you won't?" Klaus said coldly. He took a step back. "I guess your love for me only
goes so far…only on your terms…"
"Klaus…how can you say that?" Caroline opened her eyes. His words stung her to her core. "I
love you…I will love you for ever…" Tears falling down her eyes. She covered her face with her hands. Her heart felt like it was breaking.
"Caroline…I'm sorry…love…." Klaus said taking a step forward. He felt shameful. He hated hurting her. "Then wait for me love…It shouldn't take me more than a few weeks…"
Caroline looked at the eagerness on his face. His eyes full of hope and doubt. "Okay…"
The weeks turned to months. The months into a year. He did return. What he found broke his
cold heart.
Caroline was in the beach playing with the water. Her hands writing something in the sand. He
smiled watching the sun glistening in her hair. She stood up and turned around. Her smile was
miraculous. She raised her arms and ran towards someone in the distance. He flashed closer.
Who could make her so happy? Tyler.
Klaus growled. What was that mutt doing there with her? He used his hybrid hearing to listen in.
"Care…I've missed you…"
"Me too…what are you doing here? "
"I came to see my favorite girl…"
"Really…" Caroline said as she narrowed her eyes.
"Okay…okay…I can't fool you.I need a favor."
"What is it?"
"I need you to hide someone from me."
"Hide someone? Who? From whom?" Caroline said crossing her arms over her chest.
" She's an ally. She's an alpha…the last one of her kind. She was running from Klaus…"
"Klaus…I…Ty…I…"
" Please Care…please…she's all alone…I need to find a contact…I'll be back in a few days… please…Care…" Tyler grabbed Caroline's hands. He gave her his best puppy dog eyes.
"O…Okay…but not for too long…" Caroline said.
Tyler smiled and nodded. He took a step back and whistled. A dark haired girl came running.
She looked like she was barely 20 years old. She was thin and sickly. Her clothes were torn. They
looked like they have been through a battlefield. She lowered her eyes. "This is Kayla. Kayla this is
Caroline…she's a friend."
Caroline smiled and extended her hand.
Klaus was seething. That was the leader of the pack he was chasing. She was here. Caroline was
in danger. He had to think fast.
Tyler nodded and flashed away.
Klaus smiled. He waited until nightfall to strike.
Night came. Kayla was in the beach taking a walk. Caroline was in the bungalow getting ready.
Kayla took off her slippers and put her toes in the water. She smiled. The water was pleasantly warm. She walked up to the water. She heard something in the background. She turned around. Nothing. She shrugged. She walked closer to the water. She took a step further and couldn't. She
felt a pair of hands on her. One was around her waist the other was around her throat.
"Kayla…I've been waiting…"
Kayla whimpered. "Klaus…"
"That's right. You thought you could escape me…." He turned her around. He heard her pulse race. It tickled him. "Yes..not so brave now…are you?"
Kayla whimpered. She bit the side of her cheek. Fear was threatening to paralyze her. She looked
at his cold eyes. She was so afraid but she wouldn't let it show. "What do you want?"
Klaus snickered. He plunged his hand into her chest.
Kayla shouted in agonizing pain.
Caroline came running to the scene. "Kayla…Klaus what are you doing? Stop it…she's just a child…Klaus please….Niklaus..."
Klaus ignored her pleas until he heard her say his full name. He turned his head. He saw the
anguish on her face. He released his hand slowly from her chest. He looked at the pain in Caroline's face and felt ashamed. "Love…"
Kayla stepped back and held her neck. She looked at the hybrid lower his hands. His eyes changed from ice cold to warm and longing. The hybrid was expressing emotions. Kayla started to smile. Laughter started to bubble inside of her. "The mighty hybrid loves…." Kayla laugher filled the air. "The all powerful original fearless hybrid crumbles with the words of a baby vampire…if I knew how weak you really were…if I wouldn't of bothered…"
Klaus' eyes transformed from sky blue to a golden yellow. He flashed over to the laughing she-wolf.
He plunged his hand through her chest. Kayla's eyes opened wide. "I am not weak…" He crushed his hands around her chest. Kayla whimpered as she took her last breath. "I yield to no one…"
Kayla started to cough up blood. The light started to diminish from her eyes.
Caroline covered her mouth with her hands. "Klaus…what have you done…."
Klaus turned slightly smirking darkly. He released his hands slowly from the wolfs heart. His hands filled with the blood of the worthless she -wolf. "I did what I needed to do…I did what I will always do…I will not yield nor bend for anyone…"
"Mama…"
Klaus turned around and saw a child crying. She had long curly light ash burn hair. She was screaming tears falling down her face. Caroline flashed towards her and held her in her arms. "Sh… sweetheart…" Caroline dilated her eyes. " You are safe…" She waited for the child to calm down before she turned her head to face Klaus. Caroline lowered the child's head on her shoulder.
She looked at the coldness in the hybrid's face and for the first time in a long time she was afraid. She turned her head and looked at the lifeless body of Kayla. Her eyes were open wide the hint of
light in her soul diminished. Her bloody heart was discarded onto the sand as if it were worthless.
Caroline lifted her head. She looked at the hybrids face for a moment longer. She turned around and walked away.
Klaus watched his beloved walk away. He wanted to go after her but couldn't. The look of disappointment and disdain on Caroline's face haunted him.
Elijah cleared his throat awakening his brother from his trance.
Klaus rolled his eyes. He was not in the mood for another lecture especially from the most self righteous of vampires. He professed to have a moral compass but even in his most moral his brother was as deceitful as they come. "What do you want brother now is not a good time. " Klaus growled.
Elijah smiled curtly. His brothers impatience covered him like a cheap suit. Elijah tried not to cringe. The air smelt of treachery and fornication. "I have some news."
"Well…out with it…" Klaus said as he clenched his teeth.
"My contacts have told me of a possible location to Marcel's secret weapon."
"Do tell…" Klaus said as he smirked.
"There is a local church that has given sanctuary to many. The church is of medieval design. There are corridors and secret passages that have lead many to safety…"
"Yes, and this is of import because?"
"Davina is housed in one of the catacombs."
"Indeed." Klaus said smiling. "Then we must make our move sooner than later."
"Pray have you made any progress with Mrs. Gerald?"
Klaus' eyes darken. His mask firmly on his face. " Thread lightly brother."
Elijah unbutton his suit jacket. "Niklaus, what is going on with you and that vampire?"
"Nothing that concerns you." Klaus said as growled at his brother. " If you are finished with your incessant questioning…" Klaus flashed out of the room leaving his brother to finish his inquiry on his own.
The next day…
Davina stood in front of the mirror looking at her reflection. Her eyes looked dark and sad. She was imprisoned in the attic of the old church. She was told that she was under the protection of the king of the quarter. She shook her head. Marcel. The mere mention of his name gave her a shutter that engulfed her body completely. She knew if she disobeyed him in any way her family would pay. She sighed. She walked towards the window of the attic. She looked down and saw a group of vampires gathering. She rolled her eyes Marcel was among them. He was coming to see her. She exhaled. She went back to her writing desk and started sketching. She grabbed her charcoal pencil and started sketching.
"Davina…" Marcel said as he strutted inside.
"Marcel." Davina said shortly. Her eyes were concentrated on the sketchpad. She knew he wanted something. He only comes here when he wants something. "What do you want Marcel?"
"I need some information." Marcel said as he placed his hands together. He grinned at the dark haired witch. She was young but she was definitely a looker.
"Information about whom?" Davina said as she adjusted the shading in her sketch.
"Niklaus Mikaelson."
"What exactly do you need to know?"
"How to kill him." Marcel declared.
"Fine…under one condition." Davina said as she put her sketchpad away.
" Conditions? Who are you to give me conditions?" Marcel said through clenched teeth. He slowly walked towards her.
"I am the person that can help you kill an original." She said standing up. She raised her hand and started to chant. Marcel bent down. He held his head in pain. He groaned as he felt all of the blood vessels in his head start to boil over and over again. He hissed. "Davina….stop this…"
"I will when you agree…" Davina said smirking. Her eyes twinkled in the face of his pain. Her face lit up displaying a deep dimple in her right cheek.
Marcel yelled,"Ok…ok..make it stop."
Davina lowered her hand. "I want to see my Aunt Caroline."
Marcel got up and dusted himself off. "Why do you want to see her?"
"That is my business…if you want me to find out how to kill Niklaus Mikaelson…I want to see my aunt first. "
"What do you need in order to get the information?"
"I need something personal of his." Davina said as she placed her hands on her hips.
"Okay…" Marcel said as he contemplated how he was going to get that close to Klaus. He pulled put his phone and dialed.
"Hello…Carrie…."
"What do you want Marcel?"
"I have someone who wants to see you…"
"What? Who?"
"Davina…"
"Davina…what? Where is she?"
"Safe…do you want to see her or not?"
"Of course..where…when?"
"I need something first."
"What?"
"I need something personal of Klaus. A trinket…something that belongs to him."
"What? Why?"
"That's my business…"
"Fine…it may take awhile…"
"The sooner you give me what I want…the sooner you'll get what you want…" Marcel hung up the phone. "There happy now?" He said as he looked at Davina.
Davina narrowed her eyes. " I will be when I see my aunt in person."
Marcel grinned. "Of course sweetheart."
Caroline was fumbling with her keys. She was in serious need of shopping therapy especially after the call she received from Marcel. She flashed out of the her apartment and in a few minutes she was in the quarter. She walked down Bourbon Street trying to forget last night. She needed her caffeine fix first. She smiled as she walked into the Cafe Du Monde. She sat on one of the tables and waited for the waiter to take her order. She took out her phone and looked at the messages.
"Hello, love."
Caroline clenched her teeth. She wanted to hate him but she couldn't. She kind of hated herself a little for loving him more than common sense allowed. "Niklaus." She looked up into his aquamarine eyes and started to feel that old familiar twinge of happiness. She bite the side of her cheek. Get a grip Caroline he will never change. Never. He showed you that last night.
"May I sit?" Klaus asked almost trying to sound humble. He looked at the hesitation on her face and decided to take a seat anyway.
Caroline rolled her eyes. She remain silent she wasn't going to engage. She didn't want to make it that easy for him. She want him to grovel. "If you insist. " She couldn't help but smirk at the dimples that showed just how dangerously sexy he really was.
Klaus smirked "How are you love?"
Caroline smiled as she saw a waiter come up. "Can I have a cafe alit and an order of beignets. "
Klaus looked at the waiter and smiled. "Cafe au lait. "
Caroline put her phone on the table and put her hands on top of her lap. "What is it you want Mikaelson?"
"I…want to apologize…"
"Really…?" Caroline said as she frowned slightly.
"What I said to you…I…I…shouldn't have…I am so sorry…" Klaus lowered his eyes. He wanted her to believe her. He needed her to forgive him. It was really all he wanted. She was becoming more and more important to him.
Caroline cleared her throat. "Klaus please lets not pretend you feel anything more than you do. "
"Caroline what are you talking about?"
"Klaus you made it perfectly clear how you feel about me. " She said coldly, she took a sip of her laite.
"I…" Klaus looked into her cold blue eyes. "Caroline…I said a lot of things that I regretted last night. "
Caroline rolled her eyes. She knew he was trying to apologize but she couldn't. She loved him. She loved him so much. She felt like her heart was breaking once again. He was always in her mind, her heart, especially her thoughts. But he was still Klaus. Klaus will never change he will always be the one that pulls away when things get too tough. He will always lash out before he knew what was truly going on. She loved and hated him for that. "Klaus, I've known you for a long time. I just thought you would trust me a little bit more."
"Caroline…" Klaus leaned over and grabbed her hands. She recoiled from his touch. The distance stung him instantly.
"Klaus…don't." She said as she raised her hands up. "We have a common goal, when that is completed I never want to see you again."
Klaus eyes turned golden. "You can't mean that." His hands formed fists on his side.
"I do." She turned her head. She wiped a stray tear that was threatening to fall on the side of her face.
Klaus eyes returned to their clear blue when he saw her wiping her face. Shit. Why was he always hurting her? She was the one person he didn't want to hurt not now not ever. "As you wish."
Caroline got up and placed a few dollars on the table. Klaus held her hand. "No, allow me that's the least I can do, love." Caroline tried to smile. She turned to see the hurt on his face. She shrugged it off. He needed to know he couldn't say such hurtful things and get away with it. She walked away in a blur.
Klaus leaned back on the chair and sighed. "Caroline…." He said in a whisper hoping no one else could hear.
Davina paced back and forth in the attic. She sat on the floor of the attic crossed legged looking at a grimoire she was given by her mother before she had gone missing. Davina chanted and waved her had over the grimoire. " Alumbra la oscuridad, ensename la verdad, como quisiera mote sera."
The inscription appeared written in golden text.
For my daughter, Nikole Eliza.
I will always love you, trust in the
balance of nature as I always have.
My love will never cease nor will the
strength you were given. Let this guide
you when I can not.
I will always love you,
CM
Davina pressed her fingertips over the inscription. She closed her eyes closing the grimoire bringing it closer to her. She hugged the book against her chest. She lowered her head. Her eyes started to swell with tears. One by one they fell as she started to sob. She cried and allowed her mind to travel back to the day she was given the grimoire.
"Mama…mama…where are you?" Davina yelled as she tossed and turned in her bed.
Caroline came in storming into the bedroom. "Baby, what is it?"
"Mama..mama…where are you?" Davina yelled. She was soaked in sweat. "Mama…"
Caroline pulled her close. "Sh… its okay…everything will be okay."
Davina opened her eyes. " Auntie Care…" Disappointment filled her instantly.
Caroline hugged her tight. Davina held her as tight as she could. She closed her eyes as she started to sob.
Caroline hugged her until her crying started to simmer down. She slowly released her. Davina
lowered her head. Caroline lifted her head forcing Davina to look into her blue eyes. "Sweetie what's
wrong?"
"I…I..just had a had another dream of mama. "
"What was it?" Caroline asked.
"We were in a house near the sea. I was running through the sand. I was running towards her auntie…I saw her ….she had long curly blond hair and blue eyes like you…I was running towards her but I couldn't get close…no matter how much I ran I couldn't catch up to her…" Davina started to sob. "Why…why did she leave…auntie Care….why did she have to go…?"
Caroline frowned slightly. Her bottom lip started to tremble. " Oh…sweetie…she left to keep you safe. "
Caroline held Davina's hands. She gave them a squeeze. She smirked. "Hold on sweetie…I'll be right back."
Davina saw her aunt flash away. She returned in a flash she was holding something in her hands.
"What is it, auntie Care?"
Caroline held out a large book wrapped in a worn leather. There was a engraved triquetra on it. "This belongs to your mother. "
Davina's eyes lit up. She smiled and wiped away the stray tears on her face. Caroline placed the book
in her hands. "What is it, auntie?"
"It's a grimoire. It has a collections of spells, chants, and incantations that your mother has collected over
the years." Caroline opened the book and turned to the front page. "Your mother wrote this for you."
Caroline passed her hands over the page. "Alumbra la oscuridad, ensename la verdad, como quisiera
mote sera."
Davina looked at her aunt and then at the inscription that appeared before her eyes.
For my daughter, Nikole Eliza.
I will always love you, trust in the
balance of nature as I always have.
My love will never cease nor will the
strength you were given. Let this guide
you when I can not.
I will always love you,
CM
"Who is Nikole Eliza?" Davina said as she frowned. She looked at the inscription. "What does this
have to do with my mother?"
"Your name is Nikole Eliza. " Caroline said softly.
"What do you mean?" Davina asked.
"Your name given at birth is Nikole Eliza. Your mother changed your name for your safety. "
"But why?"
"Your father has a lot of enemies. She was afraid for your life."
"But why?"
"There are very evil beings that wish to harm your father and would not hesitate to harm you
to get to him…."
"Who is my father?"
Caroline sighed. "I think you are old enough to know." Caroline looked at the hints of violet in Davina's eyes.
"Your father is a supernatural being just as you and I am…He is the product of two powerful species."
"What do you mean?"
"He has the agility of a beast and the immortality of the undead. He can transform without the pull of the
moon. " Caroline waited for Davina to answer her.
"What does that mean? What is he? Where is he?" Davina said pleading.
"He…he is…I don't know child. He is an immortal like me…a vampire and a werewolf..."
"What..? A werewolf…am I one? Am I…?"
"No…you are immortal…the gifts of the wise were given to you…your a witch…you have werewolf abilities…you have the strength of a wolf but I do not know if you will turn…"
"Am I a vampire?"
"No…you are immortal but have no need for blood as I do. The immortality that you inherited from your mother was given to her when she defeated a very old witch, named Silas that was created. He was immortal but before he passed he gave your mother a lot his power…"
"Who is my father? Why isn't he here with me?"
"Your mother never told him about you." Caroline lowered her eyes.
"But why…?" Davina's eyes swelled with tears.
"Because she was afraid. She was young and she was afraid she wasn't enough for him…he wanted to conqueror the world…she did not…"
"But…but where is he…I need to find him…"
"No…you can't…"
"But why?" Davina yelled.
"He is in the middle of a war between the werewolves and the vampires…"
"But what is his name?"
"Your name is a variation of his name. Your mother renamed you Davina for your protection. She named you for the amor divino she felt for your father. "
"Divine love?" Davina raised her eyebrows.
"Yes, your mother loved your father as much as the goddess loves the god. In her heart their love was
eternal. "
"Then why wasn't he with us?"
"It was a mistake she made a long time ago…but I promised her to reunite you with him…"
"When?"
"When the time is right. For now you need to learn as much as you can…promise me…"
"I will…I promise…"
Davina opened her eyes and got up. She walked up to her closet and pushed the clothes to one side. She opened the door to her secret compartment. She put her grimoire away into a secret compartment in her closet. She took a scarlet cloth and unwrapped it. There was a silver locket in it. She opened the locket and smiled. Always and Forever.
"I'm going to find you papa…and make you pay for all the damage you've done…" Davina said smirking as her eyes changed from light green to dark violet.
