Okay you guys here's another chapter. It might be a little sucky because I'm getting over a bad case of writers block. I decided that I'm going to post a chapter every Monday. I hope you all enjoy this chapter from Anasatia Sinatra's point of view.
Ring Ring Ring
I could hear the dinner bell being whipped indicating the work day was over. I grabbed all my things and walked through the field till I made it to the main house. Mrs. Lula Barnes was telling all my coworkers to form a line so she could give them their pay check. There was about ten of us and like always I was the last one.
In my head I could see me giving my mom my check and seeing relief flood her. Then she would pay all the bills and we would have a special dinner like we always had. I loved my mom so much and couldn't wait till someday I could spoil her. Living as sevens was awful and the fact that my mom was still happy made me believe the world still had hope.
I had been so caught up in my day dreaming I didn't realize I was next to receive my check. Then Mrs. Lula Barnes started laughing and I snapped out of it. I liked the old lady. She seemed like the perfect grandmother and was as sweet as honey but her laugh reminded me of a dying cat. And that was not a pretty sound. Then she squeezed my shoulder and pulled me aside. I was curious as to why she needed to speak to me. I learned from a young age that the help aren't talked to unless they're in trouble. The old lady spoke like she had lived through a millennia.
"Sweet heart I noticed that you are one of the best workers in the field. And I was wondering if you wanted to be a part of the permanent work crew. I've seen you around and you're always the earliest to show up. During lunch you show up late and then leave early. You seem like a good worker and you catch on real fast too. I talked to Mr. Barnes about hiring you and he seemed to agree. If you're a part of our crew than you can work more and be paid more. What do you think doll?"
"Well yes ma'am. I would love to be a part of the crew." I nodded eagerly and Mrs. Barnes laughed even more.
"You can stop nodding your head I'm afraid it might pop off. Mr. Barnes will see you on Monday in the tomato field. He says you're more helpful in the plant department." Mrs. Barnes patted my shoulder and I was on my way. I headed to the front of the house through the side gate and saw the blue pick up truck like always. I saw my friend Tony waving to me through the window. It was late now and it took an hour to get home. I'm so glad Tony was able to recommend me for this partial job session. Now I had a real job instead of picking up work wherever. I opened the passenger door when I heard Mrs. Barnes scream my name. I turned around and saw her coming down her porch steps.
"I almost forgot child. I was supposed to give this to you. My friend Travis is a mailman and he stopped by. He dropped his bag and all the letters came out. When I saw this I made a special request to give it to you." She handed me a big white envelope." I remember when the King Clarkson had his selection. I entered but wasn't chosen. And by the time King Maxon came around I was much too old. Being a part of the Selection is special and I have a feeling you're going to be one of the lucky ones." The lady was probably remembering the time when she saw her first selection. It meant she really care to specially hand this to her.
"Thank you ma'am that means a lot. I'll make sure to enter." The old lady smiled and headed back inside. Then Tony drove me back into to town. On the way there I was answering all of the form. It had some strange questions like what languages I knew or how much of school I completed. I finished and Tony dropped me off at the post office instead of my house. The line took forever and I had to take a picture. I was really embarrassed when I realized that I was wearing dirty jeans and a shirt all sweaty and faded. But before I took my picture I realized if I was chosen then I would get paid. I had a genuine smile plastered on my face for the picture and I just knew I had to be chosen.
So how was the chapter? I would love to hear from all my readers and remember I still have SYOC spots open.
