2014

Caroline stood over her brother's desiccated body, still hesitating to push through with her decision to wake him.

With one last glance at the dagger in his chest, her hand grasped the handle and she let out a breath before pulling it out.

"Time to wake up, brother."

It took him exactly 2 hours, forty two minutes, and twenty seven seconds to wake up from his dagger induced slumber.

With a jolt of energy, he sat up, his eyes were wildly surveying the seemingly swaying room but his vision only continued to blur. He attempted to speak but his throat felt as though it was made entirely of sawdust.

"Welcome to the new millennium, Damon. I've missed you"

He relaxed at the sound of the voice as he turned around to look at the source. But before he could move, he felt her flash towards his direction.

"Here, brother. I know you like it straight from the vein but this would have to do for now since we need to lie low for a while"

He smelled the blood before he tasted it. It set his entire body on fire. He greedily took in the blood being fed to him. Once the bag was finished, he could finally see his surroundings fully.

He looked at the woman standing in front of him in her immaculate white sundress. She smiled as she caught his eye.

He tried to speak, but it came out lower than a whisper.

"What is it, brother?" she asked with a worried tone.

He swallowed, before attempting to speak again. "More. I need more."

She regained her smile and said, "Of course. I thought you'd never ask."

She found him sitting on one of the couches in the living room while tinkering with what seemed to be the iPhone she left on his bed earlier this morning.

"Getting up to speed with modern technology, Damon?" she asked, as she stepped inside the room.

He looked up from the gadget in his hand and looked at her for a moment, not uttering a word.

Caroline raised an eyebrow at the man silently staring at her, determined to win whatever game he was set on playing.

Damon sighed and set the phone on the center table before he made his way to the liquor cabinet. With his back towards his sister, he rummaged the cabinet looking for some bourbon to facilitate the conversation. With a triumphant grin, he snatched the bottle from the cabinet and turned to face Caroline.

"So tell me, what do I owe the pleasure of being undaggered? I remember being daggered because of a specific reason."

Caroline wrinkled her nose in disgust as Damon drank directly from the expensive bottle of bourbon that she had planned to keep for herself.

"Can't I wake up my big brother just because I missed him?" she asked sweetly as she took his previous place on the couch.

He narrowed his eyes at her before taking another swig at the bourbon.

"You were the one that pushed the dagger through my heart, Caroline."

She narrowed her eyes at him in return as she tried to keep her anger in check.

"You know why I daggered you, Damon. You betrayed me."

"You kept me in that box for more than half a millennium, Caroline! No reason will ever be enough to justify what you did to me!"

"You let her go. You knew I needed her for the sacrifice and yet you went behind my back and released her. She was my only hope and you took it away from me. You knew how much it meant to me. But you chose her over me. Your sister. I loved you, Damon. You were my big brother. But you still chose to betray me." She said, unable to stop a stray tear from falling.

He softened at the sight of a crying Caroline. He could never deal with her whenever she was like this. He was weak against her tears. Even after all she's done to him, the sight of her in tears still continued to break his resolve.

"I loved her, Caroline. I loved her." He whispered as he closed his eyes, trying to block the emotions that came with the memory ofKaterina Petrova.

"Must she die in the ritual?" he asked even though he knew the answer.

Caroline quickly looked up from the grimoire she was reading to assess her older brother.

She knew she could count on Stefan to woo the naïve Petrova girl but she didn't count on Damon to be the fool to be wooed by the doppelganger.

"What have you done, Damon?" she asked, fearing his answer.

She had waited 500 years to break her curse. She waited all that time for a doppelganger and now she had her. She didn't need her foolhardy brother to do something stupid like falling in love with the sacrificial lamb.

"I have grown to care for her, Caroline. She is unlike anyone I've ever met in our lifetime. I've had a lot of women, but never one like her"

"And you can continue to have even more women, Damon. Just not her. You know why she needs to die" Caroline said, as she shut the grimoire with the intentions of ending their conversation.

As she made her way towards the door, Damon caught her arm and forcefully turned her to face him.

"What now, brother?" she asked tiredly, weary of the conversation.

"What if I found a way to keep her alive? You can still push through with your ritual and she can keep her life."

Caroline considered his words before doubt seeped in her mind.

"That's a risk I cannot take, Damon. You know that. I've waited too long for this. She is the only chance I have to break this curse. Do not make me do something we will both regret. She will die in the ritual. And that's the last of I will hear of it." She said, as she shook of his hand and flashed away.

Damon clenched his fists and closed his eyes in anger. He needed her to live.

A chuckle broke him out of his reverie and made him clench his fists even tighter.

"What's so funny, brother?" he asked through gritted teeth.

A figure emerged from the shadows to reveal a smirking Stefan.

"I should have known there was a reason you've been more unhinged lately, brother. You fell in love with the doppelganger. How foolish of you."

"You do not get to call me foolish, brother. She is different. I care for her. I need her to live."

Stefan smiled mockingly at his brother's statement.

"Does it wake you up at night when you hear her scream my name at ungodly hours? Or does it turn you on whenever she desperately begs for more like the whore she is?" Stefan said, baiting his brother.

"Stop it."

"She's a tasty little thing, that Katerina. She's been soiled by others, I'm afraid. She didn't even bleed on my mattress as I expected. At least she didn't bleed for that reason." He continued, as he closed his eyes in pretense of savoring the memory.

"I said stop it!"

"Or what, Damon? You'll kill me? You'll kill your own brother over a naïve little girl who promised you a semblance of a life as a human? She will never accept you, Damon. You're not human. You haven't been one in centuries. You're a monster. Like Caroline. Like me. You're one of us. We do not feel, we do not care."

"She does accept me, Stefan. She cares for me as I care for her. She knows that I am a monster and she still continues to care for me. She knows, Stefan."

Stefan's good mood was broken as soon as the words left as his brother's mouth.

"What did you do, Damon?" he yelled as he grabbed a fistful of Damon's collar.

"I told her the truth."

"You didn't. You wouldn't."

"I did. And I do not regret it."

"Not yet. But you will. Soon." Stefan said, as he released his brother.

He entered his room with a heavy heart as Stefan's threat loomed over his head. Not even the girl sitting on top of his bed could bring a smile to his face.

She rose up to greet him with a kiss. He welcomed it with closed eyes.

"Did you speak with Caroline?" she asked, while ghosting her lips over his temples.

"Yes" was his only reply as his body responded to her touch.

"And?" she asked, slowing down her movements.

"She refuses to see it my way. But I am determined to make her. She'll come around. You'll see." he says, although not quite sure if he's reassuring her or himself.

"But the full moon is tomorrow. There is no time. I might be dead today. I love you, Damon. I want to be with you. I don't want to die." She pleaded, as she pressed her petite body against his.

He signed at the close contact and opened his eyes to gaze at the woman that held the same face as Tatia.

"I know, Katerina. I will find a way, I promise. I will not let Caroline kill you in the ritual."

"Let's run away. Let's go somewhere she will never find us. Anywhere but here."

He shook his head softly and kissed her lips. He rested his forehead on hers as the possible scenarios ran through his mind.

"There is nowhere in this world where she will not find us. Running will only anger her more." He whispered, upset that he could not offer any more viable solutions.

"So turn me. She needs my blood, doesn't she? So turn me into a vampire, Damon. We can spend forever together by each other's side. Don't you want that?"

"I can't condemn you to this fate, Katerina. You are too pure for this life. I would never do that to you. I love you." He said, as he drew her closer for an embrace.

She stiffened but Damon did not notice. The internal war raging inside his head was too much of a distraction.

There was a slight shuffle in the bed sheets but that too went by without notice.

"Then you are useless to me, Damon. Goodbye."

Those were the last eight words he heard before a makeshift wooden stake was plunged in his heart from behind.

He awoke, gasping for breath on his bed as the pain shot through his heart from the still lodged stake. He groaned as he slowly pulled it out.

"She ran away."

He turned to his right to address the owner of the voice and was met with a bloodstained Caroline.

"Caroline, I-" he started to say, but was cut off by Caroline's glare.

"Don't." was all she said, as she stood up, blood still dripping from her body and clothes.

He stayed silent as he watched his younger sister break into tears. Of anger. Of despair. Of anguish. Of betrayal. His betrayal.

"Always and forever. You promised Stefan and I always and forever and this is how you show it, brother?" her voice was barely a whisper but he heard it loud and clear.

"I am sorry, sister." was all he could offer to say.

Before he could utter another word, she flashed towards him and buried a dagger in his heart.

"I am sorry too, brother." she said, as she watched his body slowly decaying before her.

Damon wanted to comfort his sister but being put to sleep in a box for over half a millennium had significantly decreased his ability to deal with crying women.

"Why did you wake me, Caroline?" he asked, half wondering whether he could outrun a crying Caroline in his just woken up state. Most probably not. Caroline was too much of a force to reckon with at any given time.

"I missed you, you know. Even though you betrayed me, you are still my brother. I missed you, Damon." She said, from where she was sitting on the couch.

"I missed you too, little sister." He said cautiously, choosing his words carefully. One wrong move might mean sleeping for another half a millennium.

"Good! That's what I wanted to hear." Caroline said, clapping her hands. Her mood suddenly shifting from hysterical crying to grinning like a maniac.

He stepped back at the instant change of pace and set down the bottle of bourbon on the nearest table.

"What is this really about, Caroline? I'm tired of your endless mind games." He said, exasperated.

"I believe you have some making up to do." She said, as she stood up and walked towards him.

"And how do you expect me to do that?" he asked wary of her closeness. Being close meant only that it would be easier for her to pull his heart out.

She grinned at his question and took the bottle on the table.

"You'll be accompanying me back to Mystic Falls. We have a doppelganger to kill, and a curse to break." She said, before she took a swig from the table.

She wiped the excess bourbon from her lips and shoved the bottle towards him.

"We're going home, brother."
