Chapter 4: Trying Encounters

~…~…~…~…~…~…~…

Rose's heart was pounding as she marched across the pitch and up to Lyra Rinaldi and Scorpius, who were still yelling at each other.

"It was just a kiss, Malfoy," Rinaldi was saying.

"I've told you before - I don't fancy you!" he shouted back. "When are you going to get that through your head?"

Rose had never heard Scorpius sound so angry before.

Rinaldi appeared completely unfazed by his words. "It's been 'will we, won't we' all year, Scorpius."

"You are completely delusional! I'm not playing hard to get!"

As Rose drew near, Rinaldi suddenly spotted her. She turned to face Rose, her long black ponytail whipping around her head as she did so and her hands settled on her hips in a challenging stance. "What the bleeding hell do you want? This isn't any of your business, little Gryffindor."

And with an air of dismissal, she turned away and once again turned her attention to Scorpius.

"I'd appreciate it if you kept your hands off of my boyfriend," Rose said, her voice steady and firm. Somehow all of her nerves had fallen away the moment Rinaldi had opened her spiteful mouth.

Everyone on the pitch had stopped what they were doing and were watching the scene in front of them unfold. The Hufflepuff team hadn't yet left the pitch and looked unsure of what to make of this development. The Slytherins seemed torn between supporting Scorpius, who had just won them the match, and their captain.

"Sorry? Your boyfriend?" Rinaldi asked in a tone of utter disbelief. Then she gave a sharp, cold laugh. "As if someone like Scorpius Malfoy would want someone like you, a freckled, frizzy-haired Gryffindor."

Rose felt her ears grow hot in embarrassment and anger. However, her anger seemed to melt away as Scorpius gave her a small, reassuring smile. Moving closer to Rose, he firmly grasped her hand in a sign of solidarity. Her heart warmed at the feel of his hand in hers, their fingers entwined.

"That's my girlfriend you're talking about, Rinaldi," Scorpius said sharply, gesturing at Rose with his free hand. "And I happen to think she's a beautiful person."

Rinaldi forcefully shook her head as if trying to un-hear his words. "No. No. This is obviously some kind of joke."

"Not at all," Scorpius replied.

He turned to look at Rose, and his expression softened. He gently took her face in his hands and brought his lips down to hers. The kiss swept through Rose, and she wrapped her arms tightly around him.

Scorpius reluctantly pulled away and for a brief moment rested his forehead against hers. He turned to fully face Rinaldi, who was now staring at the pair of them with a look akin to horror covering her face.

"I fancy Rose. I'm dating Rose. End of story."

Rinaldi's usually cold demeanor seemed to crack and for the first time, she looked vulnerable. "How long, then?"

"Since last term," Scorpius answered without hesitation.

Rinaldi shook her head again. "You knew how I felt about you."

"I made it clear that I didn't return the feeling."

"Well, I'm glad I found out what kind of person you are," Rinaldi arched an eyebrow as she cast a disdainful gaze at the pair. Her vulnerability of a moment ago had vanished. "I could never fancy someone who prefers a Gryffindor."

"- Stupefy!"

Next to her, Scorpius dropped over onto the pitch, stunned. Running towards them was Hugo, his wand held out in front of him. Fred was close on his heels. James was coming behind Fred, though at a slower pace. He glanced once up at the stands to where Eva, Al, and the rest of the family were was watching. Rose strongly suspected that whatever had happened after she had run off, it wasn't good.

"Hugo, stop!" Rose cried, trying to wrap her mind around the fact that Hugo had actually hexed Scorpius. She hadn't thought that he would. The knowledge that she's been wrong nearly drove her to tears. That idiot, idiot boy.

"Enervate," Rose pointed her wand at Scorpius and his grey eyes blinked open slowly.

"Told you he'd hex me," he said wryly as one of the Slytherin Quidditch team members helped him to his feet.

"You lied to me!" Hugo shouted at Rose, hurt evident in his face. "You told me there was nothing going on between you!"

"I wasn't lying then," Rose started to explain, but her attempts were cut off by Rinaldi sending a stinging hex at Fred before he had even opened his mouth.

The next few minutes were a scene of total confusion. James revived Fred, and then unexpectedly stalked off towards the castle. Fred shot a jinx at Rinaldi, which caused the entire Slytherin team to draw their wands. Fred and Hugo both sent jinxes at Scorpius, who dodged and shot one back at Hugo. Madam Hooch was blowing her shrill whistle over the din of students yelling and attempting to rush onto the pitch. Professors hurried to stop an all-out fight and effectively cast barrier spells to keep additional students out of the fight.

When all was said and done, Hugo was covered in large pustules, Scorpius was out cold, Rinaldi's nose was gushing blood, and Fred was sporting a nasty looking black eye.

~…~…~…~…~…~…~…

As if that afternoon's row on the pitch - over the fact that she was dating a Slytherin - hadn't been terrible enough, the sight of Hugo and Scorpius lying in beds in the Hospital wing separated by a folded partition nearly drove Rose to tears. The sight of Lyra Rinaldi being attended to by Madam Pomfrey was about the only thing keeping Rose from breaking down then and there. Roxanne was also sitting on a nearby bed, holding a cloth to her forehead. The cloth was emitting a faint purple smoke.

It was just so stupid. Rose knew that she shouldn't have told her family like she had - she had been incredibly rash - but even so, her news that she was dating Scorpius shouldn't have prompted such a ridiculous overreaction.

When he saw her, Hugo fixed her with a glare and rolled over on his side away from her. His stubbornness only cemented Rose's resolve to speak to him. Standing at the edge of his bed, she looked down at her pustule-covered brother.

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you about Scorpius myself. I didn't mean for you to find out like that," she spoke to his back. "Obviously you don't want to talk to me right now, but when you're ready, come find me."

Across the room, Roxanne offered her a small, reassuring smile.

Turning away from Hugo, Rose slowly made her way over to Scorpius, highly conscious of Rinaldi sitting on the bed opposite. Her black eyes followed Rose as she walked.

"Hey," Scorpius said softly, offering a small smile.

"I'm so sorry about my family," Rose whispered, still holding her tears in check.

Scorpius pushed himself up on his elbows slightly, wincing as he did so. "Salazar Slytherin, what a lot of nutters."

"I'm sorry," Rose pleaded again. "I chose the stupidest time to tell them. But when I saw-" she threw a quick glance at Rinaldi, "- you know...I-I just snapped!"

Rose had never felt so jealous in her entire life as she had watching Lyra Rinaldi kiss her boyfriend. It had felt like an icy potion was crawling its way through her veins making her feel horribly cold and warm with anger all at the same time. How was she supposed to have remained calm at a time like that?

"We lost both our Houses loads of points!" Rose continued, feeling sheer panic as she thought back through the day's events. "We started a fight on the Quidditch pitch!"

Scorpius grasped her hand and forced her to look at him. "We didn't start that fight."

"This isn't the way I envisioned telling people…"

"Most of the people you wanted to tell already knew. It was just Fred, Hugo, James and your cousins in Hufflepuff that didn't know."

"And Victoire and Dominique," Rose added. "They'll hear it from Louis."

"I knew what I was getting into when I stole that book out from under your nose in the library. I knew there were members of your family that would hex me if they knew that I fancied you. But I did it anyway. We've been through this; you're not your family anymore than I am."

Godric, he was wonderful. Rose threw herself at Scorpius and he caught her with a slight grunt.

"Did I hurt you?" she asked frantically, trying to pull away to ensure that she hadn't inadvertently made any of his injuries worse with her exuberance.

But Scorpius wouldn't let her pull away, and kept his arms firmly around her.

"Look at it this way," Scorpius said wryly. "Things can't get much worse, can they?"

"We still have to tell our parents," Rose pointed out, dropping her head gently against his shoulder "And we have to do it soon. They'll probably know before we have the chance to write them ourselves."

Scorpius remained silent, but she felt his body tense at her words.

Rose couldn't help but sigh heavily. "Part of me is sorry we didn't tell everyone right away…but part of me is still glad that we didn't. It's like you said that day in the library – this gave us a chance to figure out things between us without anyone else sticking their nose in."

"I thought you might be sorry you agreed to it," Scorpius told her, running a pale hand over her hair. "If I hadn't suggested that we keep it a secret, we wouldn't be in this mess right now."

Rose shook her head, then leaned up to kiss his jaw. "I think we're better prepared to face everyone than we would have been if we'd told them right away that we were dating. We've both had a chance to be certain that we're invested in this relationship. That can only help us."

"So logical," Scorpius teased her gently. "Why weren't you in Ravenclaw?"

"I'd say this entire plan was rather Slytherin," Rose smiled back at him.

The corners of his mouth turned up in a smirk. "All part of my devious Slytherin plot."

"You know, I think there's a bit of Gryffindor in you after all."

He looked at her skeptically. "Do you now?"

"You said, and I quote, 'I knew there were members of your family that would hex me if they knew that I fancied you. But I did it anyway.' Now tell me that isn't just like a Gryffindor?"

"How did you remember my exact words?"

But Rose didn't get a chance to reply because just then Madam Pomfrey bustled over looking quite harried.

"All right, Mr. Malfoy," she clucked, "Let's look. Gracious, why students are allowed to play Quidditch is beyond me. It's a miracle no one's been killed yet."

Rose didn't bother correcting Madam Pomfrey that no one in the Hospital Wing at the moment had been injured as a direct result of Quidditch. She rather doubted the matron would appreciate the distinction anyway.

"You're free to go," Madam Pomfrey finally said after a great deal of poking and prodding and continued mutterings about the dangers of Quidditch.

"Want me to walk you back to Gryffindor Tower?" Scorpius asked, swinging his legs over the edge of the bed and getting to his feet.

"That sounds nice, but I don't think it's such a great idea," Rose replied sadly. Why of why did her family have to be such a lot of prats? "Give everyone tonight to cool off. Then we'll take it from there."

Scorpius nodded. Rose couldn't help but notice that he looked a bit relieved. His Slytherin traits were a bit too strong to want to walk directly into the heart of trouble. Not that she could blame him. She'd rather he not end up back in the Hospital Wing before the evening was out.

"See you tomorrow?" he asked hopefully.

She reached up and tenderly touched his forehead. "Absolutely. Now get some rest and take care of yourself so this bruise doesn't get any worse."

"You're worth it," he told her softly.

Rose felt her face flush and she smiled, suddenly feeling a bit shy. "Thank you."

~…~…~…~…~…~…~…

"What happened after I left the stands?" Rose asked her cousin as they walked through the corridors.

Roxanne scrunched up her nose. "Well, Eva let it slip to everyone that she knew about you and Malfoy—"

"Scorpius," Rose corrected her.

"Naturally, James, Fred, and Hugo flew off the handle. For a minute, I thought Hugo was going to have a heart attack. James being James, he said some stupid things to Eva, and Eva being Eva, she said some even stupider things back. She actually told him she didn't why know she fancied a prat like him. Then James stormed off, Fred and Hugo ran down to the pitch, and you know the rest."

Rose actually outwardly winced at this. "That's…that's harsh. Do you think they'll be all right?"

"They'd better work it out," Roxanne harrumphed. "For one thing, they're perfect for each other when they're not rowing and saying stupid things. And for another thing, our family has spent far too much time and effort trying to get them together to see all of our efforts go up in flames now after they've finally started dating."

Rose couldn't help but chuckle at this. It felt good; she was sorely in need of a laugh after the perfectly horrid day she'd had.

She pondered the situation for a moment. "It might take a bit, but I think they'll get past this. What Eva said was terrible, but I know she didn't mean it. She has a tendency to say hurtful things when she's on the defensive. So does James for that matter. But have you seen the way they look at each other when they don't know anyone's watching?"

"Like the way you were watching Mal- Scorpius at the Quidditch match today?" Roxanne prompted.

Rose was taken aback by her cousin's words. She felt a warm flush spread across her cheeks.

Roxanne grinned widely. "You're blushing."

The two girls walked in silence until they turned the corner to the corridor leading to Gryffindor tower.

"If the family isn't sitting around the fire discussing you, Scorpius, and all that, I'll eat a hippogriff," Roxanne offered in attempt to lighten the mood as the two made their way towards the portrait of the Fat Lady.

It might have been a bit funny if Roxanne didn't have a white bandage tied across her head where a wayward spell had slashed across the forehead during the fight on the pitch.

Sure enough, the first thing Rose heard when she climbed through the portrait hole was members of her family discussing Scorpius and herself.

"The thing is," Fred said in a matter-of-fact manner, "is that he's not just a Slytherin, is he? He's a Malfoy. Our families have hated each other for ages. Centuries, really. His family is part of the reason that my dad doesn't have his twin brother around anymore. His great-aunt tortured Aunt Hermione. His family would have happily seen our entire family killed."

Rose thrust her hands into her pockets and clenched them into fists.

"His family. Not him."

Six pairs of eyes swiveled to her as they realized that she was in the room and had heard at least a portion of their conversation.

Fred opened his mouth, but then closed it with a snap, apparently thinking better of what he had been about to say.

Rose's didn't shift her gaze from Fred. "Scorpius isn't his family. Weren't you listening when Uncle Harry told us what Albus Dumbledore once said? That is doesn't matter what a person is born, but rather what they become?"

"It's just..." Fred began, but Rose cut him off.

"No, you listen to me, Fredrick George Weasley," Rose said loudly, making everyone sitting around the fire jump slightly. "You don't know Scorpius at all. And I know we're all used to protecting one another, but you have to trust me on this. Get to know him before you judge him. He wasn't even born when all of that happened. Our parents didn't fight against Voldemort so you could sit here and pass judgment on people because of their family name."

Fred looked properly chastised by her words, which gave Rose a measure of satisfaction.

"Sorry, Rosie," Fred told her heavily. "I just ...I don't want you to get hurt."

Rose couldn't help herself. She rushed forward and threw her arms around her cousin in a hug.

"Oh, Fred."

She could tell that Fred was surprised by her sudden change in attitude by the way his body tensed and the way he awkwardly patted her back. It almost made her smile. Almost.

"But this doesn't mean that I like him or that I approve of this!" Fred warned her as she pulled away from him. "He's still a Slytherin. And he's on their Quidditch team. Seriously, where's your House pride, Rose?"

"Are Scorpius and Hugo all right?" Christine asked what no one else had. Rose felt a sense of gratitude toward Eva's friend.

Rose nodded. "Scorpius is a bit sore, but he'll be fine. He was able to return to his common room. But Hugo needs to stay overnight. Madam Pomfrey had to burst the pustules and now the open sores need to heal."

Everyone, Rose included, winced.

"He looks like a Potions experiment gone wonky," Roxanne sniggered slightly.

Looking around at her friends and family sitting around the fireplace, Rose suddenly realized that two very conspicuous people were missing. Lily was the only Potter present.

"Wait...where are James and Al?"

Everyone else looked to Eva as though she would be able to supply the answer to that question, but Eva didn't respond. She merely stared down at her hands, worry evident in her eyes.

"Dunno," Fred finally answered solemnly.

"He'll come around, Eva. I'll talk to him," Rose tried to assure her.

Rose felt terrible that the revelation that Eva had known of her relationship with Scorpius had caused a massive row between her friend and her cousin. Especially since Eva and James's relationship was so new.

"How have we not talked about this yet?" Fred wondered out loud. "That argument was...er...yeah," he trailed off as Lily shot him a piercing warning look that clearly said that he had better stop talking immediately if he valued his life.

"It was bleeding awful, it what is was," Eva groaned and rubbed her temples. "I don't want to talk about it right now."

"Well, I need to go and write a terribly uncomfortable letter to my parents before they hear the news from someone else." Rose sighed heavily, but then squared her shoulders and marched off towards her dormitory with her head held high.

Writing her parents had to be faced, and she had better do it sooner than later.

~…~…~…~…~…~…~…

Dear Mum and Dad,

You probably received an owl this afternoon from Neville about the fight after the Quidditch match. I don't know what exactly what the letter said, or if Hugo or another member of the family has owled you, but the major reason for the row was that Hugo and some of the cousins found out that I'm dating Scorpius Malfoy.

I'm certain that comes as a massive surprise and I know that I should have written sooner and told you. Scorpius and I decided to keep things secret for a while so that we could get to know each other without all of the cousins and Hugo interfering while everything was all so new. I didn't keep this a secret to hurt or deceive anyone; I want you to know that.

Scorpius is a good person and I like him a lot. He makes me happy. The fact that some people judge him based on his House or on the past actions of his family isn't fair. He didn't have any part in what happened in the past between you and Uncle Harry and Scorpius's dad.

I hope that you're not too upset and I hope that you'll be willing to meet Scorpius. I think you would like him.

Love,

Rose

~…~…~…~…~…~…~…

Rose's thoughts were filled with thoughts of the letter she had sent to her parents and what their reply would bring. She was so absorbed in watching for the owl post that she barely noticed what she was doing. She vaguely registered Lily pulling something out of her hand, but didn't pay it much mind. It wasn't until Nearly Headless Nick floated directly through her causing her to jolt that she was jerked away from her worries and pulled back to what was going on around her.

Looking down at her plate, she frowned in confusion as she saw a piece of toast covered in strawberry yogurt rather than jam. She really must have been even more preoccupied than she had thought.

"I talked with James last night, and it seemed to help," Al told Eva with a slightly forced smile. "He just needs some space. I saw Fred, Christopher, and him leave their dormitory this morning, but...well, I wouldn't count on seeing him today."

"I'm sorry, Eva," Rose told her mournfully, pushing away her yogurt toast.

"For what?" Eva asked, seeming bewildered by her apology.

"None of this would have happened if I hadn't gone and blurted out that I was dating Scorpius like that. I should have just stayed well out of it."

"Don't be daft, Rose," Roxanne cut in sensibly as she climbed over the bench and took a seat next to Lily. "The boys would have been upset no matter how they found out. And let's face it, James was always going to hold a grudge against Malfoy for all time for beating him at Quidditch."

"Listen," Eva said, setting down her utensils and pushing her untouched plate away with a sigh. "I'm really sorry that I told James that you three knew about Scorpius. It was an accident, I swear. I was just so frustrated with him that it slipped out."

"Yeah...not your finest moment, Eva," Roxanne said bluntly, throwing Eva a cross look. "Way to throw us to the dragons."

"That's all right, Eva," Lily said warmly. "I just hope you two can work things out."

Al nodded. "You're only human. I grew up with James, so I understand all about being frustrated with him."

Just then, Eva's younger brothers Richard and Gareth approached her on their way out of the Great Hall.

"We got him," Richard whispered none to subtlety in Eva's ear.

"Am I missing something?" Eva asked, in confusion.

"So," Rose said turning to her cousins, "Anyone seen Fred this morning?"

"Nope," Roxanne replied.

Al frowned. "Odd, it's not like him to miss breakfast."

Despite the conversation that they were holding, everyone's concentration was firmly on Eva and her brothers. It was a common enough ploy that they often used when meddling in each other's affairs.

"He's probably whinging about his bleeding injury," Roxanne rolled her eyes as Richard and Gareth talked with Eva about having used a tripping jinx on James as he left the common room.

"Oh!" Eva cried suddenly, grabbing everyone's attention. "Richard – congratulations on asking Lily to Hogsmeade!"

As shy as ever, Richard ducked his head even as a smile crept across his face. He glanced at Lily just at the moment she glanced at him.

Rose felt extremely pleased that their meddling had paid off. Lily couldn't have chosen a better lad to fancy, and perhaps her more outgoing nature would help to bring Richard out of his shell.

"He just went for it, didn't you?" Gareth grinned widely, elbowing his twin gently in the side.

Richard nodded bashfully, still looking down at his shoes. Rose found the entire scene positively adorable.

"That's all of the details you're going to give me?" Eva artfully raised an eyebrow. "After all of you've been so meddlesome about my life, I think that I, as your older sister, deserve a few more details than that."

"I'll let you tell it," Lily told Richard with a wide grin.

Well, there went any pretense that all of them hadn't been listening in on Eva's conversation. Although frankly, if Eva was going to continue dating James and be around the Potters and Weasleys so much, she had might as well get used to it. Rose hoped that would be the case.

A light red blush stained Richard's cheeks. "I dunno...it was raining, and she asked me if I wanted to share her umbrella. So on the way down to the pitch for the match, I just pulled her aside and asked her if she'd like to go together the next Hogsmeade visit."

"I can't believe you finally asked her!" Eva smiled fondly at her brother. "I thought that perhaps she was going to have to ask you."

"You and everyone else," Roxanne offered with a cheeky smile.

Rose would have, indeed, placed a few sickles on the assumption that Lily would have to do the asking. Not that there was anything wrong with that mind you, it was just due to Richard's natural shyness.

"Stop embarrassing him," Lily chided gently. She turned back to Richard. "I'm glad you asked, though I was prepared to ask you."

"Just seemed like a good opportunity," Richard mumbled. "Well, we need to go to the, er...owlrey," he added hastily, clearly finding the current situation a bit awkward.

No sooner had Richard and Gareth departed, than someone else arrived.

"Good morning, Rose."

Rose was aware that the eyes of everyone in the immediate vicinity (and a few others besides) were firmly on her and Scorpius. If she hadn't grown up with the Weasley and Potter clans, she might have found such obvious interest unnerving, but a lifetime with her family had prepared her for most eventualities.

"Scorpius!" Rose greeted him, surprised to see him standing there next to the Gryffindor table and some of her family members. After yesterday and their conversation before she left the Hospital Wing, she had thought that he wouldn't want to come near her family very soon.

"Your bruise is gone," she blurted out, then immediately felt that that was a stupid thing to say. It didn't remotely convey how happy she was to see him.

Scorpius shrugged, as he reached up to press a pale hand to his now unmarred forehead. "Madam Pomfrey took care of the swelling." He cast a quick glance down the table. Rose was certain that he was keeping an eye out for Hugo or Fred, not that she could exactly blame him. Still, he was here.

"You're allowed to sit down, you know," Roxanne told him bluntly as she selected a slice of ham from a platter resting in the center of the table. She pointed with her free hand to the empty place next to Rose.

His cool, grey eyes took in everyone, then he sat down with slow deliberation. Rose beamed at him while he and Al exchanged greetings. It must have been strange for the pair of them to finally be acknowledging the other one in public in this new way. It was a bit strange for her as well, come to think of it.

"How's your shoulder? Eva asked him politely.

Rose felt in that moment that she could have hugged Eva.

Scorpius seemed rather surprised by Eva's attempt at conversation. "Sore," he told her simply. "But fine."

"Direct hits are painful," Eva added. "But I don't need to tell you that. I've been lucky so far this term. I've only had to go to the hospital wing for some minor incidents. It's been quite nice, not having to endure Madam Pomfrey sighing heavily every time I walk in the doors."

"Madam Pomfrey enjoys informing me about the dangers of Quidditch as though I wasn't already aware," Scorpius replied, the ghost of a smile on his face.

Rose knew that small talk with new people wasn't his forte, but he was clearly warming up to Eva due to their shared Quidditch experiences.

"Yes!" Eva laughed. "That happens to me too!"

"You should have seen the look she gave me after that Bludger gave me that nasty bruise at practice a few weeks ago," Lily happily joined in the conversation.

"She's right fussy about visitors too," Roxanne agreed with a firm nod and a roll of the eyes. "You'd think visiting your cousins in the hospital wing after hours was a crime worthy of Azkaban."

"We tried to sneak in to see James one time after he'd broken his arm," Al explained for Scorpius's benefit. "We weren't very stealthy and Madam Pomfrey caught us. It wasn't pretty."

Rose mentally cringed at the memory of that particular incident. She had tried to stop her cousins, but they simply wouldn't listen.

"What are you doing here?"

Rose's heart sank right down to her shoes. Everything had been going so well.

Scorpius slowly laid down his fork and knife and turned in his seat to face Hugo. To those who didn't know him well he might have seemed calm, but Rose could tell that he was nervous.

"I'm eating breakfast with Rose, her friends, and some of your family."

Hugo's long nose quivered a bit and he stared obstinately back at Scorpius. "Shouldn't you be at your own table?"

"Hugo, I know you don't like me, but I don't care. It doesn't matter how many glares or hexes you send my way because that's not going to change the way I feel about Rose. I care about her. I hope you can accept that."

Rose's heart positively soared at her boyfriend's words. It struck her at that precise moment that Scorpius must care about her a great deal. More than she had suspected. She knew, because she felt the same.

Hugo's fiery stare softened just a fraction. Standing up, Rose took her brother gently by the elbow. "I want to explain everything to you, Hugo. Breakfast in the kitchens together?"

Hugo paused, and then nodded, his hair flopping onto his forehead in that way it always had. "Yeah, all right."

Not everything was mended, but it was certainly a start.
