Chapter 24 – To The Highest Bidder
*NOTE – Hi, guys! This is TheManFromMudos. I'm sorry to say it, but the story's almost over. But don't worry! There's still plenty of action left in the story's final chapters. And, there's a certain word in the back of my mind. Begins with 'S', ends in 'L' … I'm sure you can figure out the rest. So, read on and enjoy: It's 'Oddworld: Al's Oddysee'. THANK YOU!*
*ANOTHER NOTE – This chapter's pretty short, and mostly just dialogue. SORRY!*
The auction began with a quick introduction by Headley. He explained that this was the last can of Gabbiar on Oddworld, and that Vykkers Labs were happy to give it away in return for a healthy sum of money. Then the bidding commenced. There were some pretty low bids to start with, as low as 1000 Moolah, but things soon picked up. Glukkons and Vykkers alike were shouting out there bids in a desperate attempt to win the fabled can.
"50,000 Moolah!" One Glukkon yelled.
"60,000 Moolah!" Another Glukkon countered.
"62,000!" A Vykker interjected.
Not long later, the bids had reached 100,000 Moolah. I looked over at Dave, who seemed shocked.
"What's up, Dave?" I asked the Mudokon.
"That's more Moolah than I could ever dream of, and they're just throwin' it away on Gabbiar!" He replied. I chuckled. But he was right. There, below our feet, Oddworld's richest were spending Moolah like it wasn't worth a penny.
"250,000 Moolah!" A Vykker shouted.
"300,000!" A nearby Glukkon bellowed.
"500,000 Moolah!" Another yelled, to a couple of gasps from the others. The bidding was getting serious now.
"Why are we here exactly?" Dave whispered to me. He had a valid point.
"I'm not sure." I replied. "Maybe just to see what happens?" Since Lulu wasn't present at the auction, thanks to me killing Abe and stopping him from possessing Lulu, or even making him rich in the first place, partly because he never met Munch, since he never visited the Almighty Raisin, who would've told him about Munch in the first place… Anyway, I just wanted to see who'd win the auction.
"605,000 Moolah!" One Vykker tried.
"620,000!" Another attempted.
"630,000!" One Glukkon said, refusing to be defeated.
"Can't we just go?" Dave asked.
"No!" I snapped at him. "It's just getting interesting." The Gabbiar was starting to become more and more valuable with every bid. The crowd of Glukkons and Vykkers below had now reached the millions, with each bid topping the last by a long shot.
"1,300,000!" A particularly rich-looking Glukkon shouted.
"1,400,000 Moolah!" The Glukkon next to him shouted.
"1,450,000!" Another Vykker desperately tried.
The auction was drawing to a close. These people couldn't go on bidding for much longer. Then, I heard a familiar voice from the crowd.
"One million, five hundred-thousand." The voice said calmly. I searched for the source of the bid. Then, I found it. Stood right at the front of the crowd of bidders was… Tex. One of Oddworld's richest Glukkons. He'd been the one who Lulu had the most competition from in the auction in 'Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee'. He stood proudly in a green sequined suit and a ten-gallon hat. Beside him was a slightly less rich-looking Glukkon, who still looked quite important all the same. The others in the crowd were shocked by this high bid. Some looked down at the ground. Some shook their heads. It was clear that nobody could top Tex's bid.
"The bid rests at 1,500,000 Moolah!" Announced Headley, the auctioneer.
"This is it, Dave." I told him. "This is it!" Dave and I looked on as the auction came to an end.
"Going once…" Headley said. I shook with excitement. I don't know what excited me so much about the outcome of the auction, but I was somewhat… intrigued.
"Going twice…"Headley announced. I glanced over at Dave, who wasn't half as excited as I was about Tex winning the auction.
"Going… Going… Going… SOLD!" Headley bellowed. Tex laughed and cheered. He and his friend stepped forwards and bowed to the rest of the crowd.
"Thank you! Thank you!" Tex shouted. "I'm pleased to have won this auction. I'll cherish this Gabbiar. I'll cherish it!" He laughed once more as he and the other Glukkon left the auction room. The rest of the crowd filed out afterwards, with many grumbling and cursing. After that, Headley left, and locked the auction room door behind him.
"Come on, Dave." I said, climbing down the ladder into the huge room below.
"W-Where are we going?" Dave asked, puzzled.
"Just for a look round." I assured him. "Relax, Dave. The doors are locked. No-one'll find us!" With that, Dave and I descended the ladder and began to look around the enormous auction hall.
*NOTE – Well, what did you think? Sorry this chapter was a little short, and mainly dialogue driven. The next chapter'll be a lot more interesting. Thanks for reading this chapter of 'Oddworld: Al's Oddysee'. See you next time. THANK YOU!*
