Hellloooo ready for the second to last chapter?! This is David's POV I do not own L4D!
Spending days in a padded room does shit to you, it adds on to whatever you're going though. Soon you would think that the walls are closing in on you, or even that there's no air and you begin to hyperventilate. But one thing I know for sure is that outside that small window I can hear drills going on. So many things I could hear from within this prison. Like the sound of a thousand people marching, commands shouted out in the infected language, things you would hear in an army base.
What are they doing today? I ask myself as I try to tip toe to see the outside world. Yet rather seeing the outside world like I wanted too I saw Him. His greasy, messy hair- the black dye already out leaving my dirty blonde hair sticking up in ungodly places. His sickly pale skin almost see-though from lack of nutrition. His lips so cracked and chapped that the skin was peeling off making the exposed skin bleed. His eyes were the worst, bags laid below his eyes looking as if they themselves could carry their own bags. Around his eyes were a deep red showing that he hasn't slept in weeks, and his eyes were bloodshot- his pupils small.
I backed away not wanting to have him make his comment like he would usually do when I see him. But today he didn't he just stayed in that window- the sound of footsteps making it's way to my room caught me off guard. Turning I saw Tyler enter my chamber- his choice of clothing was something out of the ordinary, usually he would wear something...more reveling than what he had on now. His entire person was white, pants, shirt, shoes- everything was white.
I looked at him with disgust, "The fuck are you wearing?" I moved away from his approaching form not liking how he smelled fresh and how his body has gotten more muscular while I have been withering away in this fucking death room. Tyler didn't even flinch when I had snapped at him- seems like he's use to my outbursts. Behind him were two Tank's awaiting outside of the door. "We need you David, Nathan told me to get you." His voice was stern- not Tyler like- his body movement was rough.
I tried to kick him away but he grabbed my leg to spin me around, I gasped as the wind was knocked out of me. I felt Tyler straddle my back putting pressure on the back of my neck- He's been training. "David, please just don't fight me. Nathan...he think's there's a army coming...he...he thinks that Victoria is with the army."
Blowing the dust that layered the floor out of the way I told Tyler that he was a lying sack of British shit. That Skittlez would never be in the enemy's army. I heard him sigh as he lifted me back on my feet but rather than undoing my straight-jacket like I had hoped for, he ushered me into the hallway so that I would be between the two Tanks. I saw the exit down the hall- maybe I should run for it- running would be bad- they kill me- like how they kill everyone else!
My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of my jacket coming undone, I looked to the Tanks to find them actually undoing my straps. Why are they doing that? Tyler must of saw my confused face cause he explained that Nathan needs to see me.
"What for? Why are you here?"
"...David, I just told you-"
"No you didn't- know what, whatever, just take me to him." The cool breeze that I would feel when Tyler would open my cell door hit my bare skin making me shiver. My abs that use to be my pride and joy were disappearing, in fact my whole body was being a sad mess. I took off my use to be white pants leaving me in my boxers, the cool air that circulated the building was one thing that I would not be missing. I saw the look of pity in his eyes, I don't need pity- his pity, he's the one that put me here in the first place. "W-Well ok." He looked up at the Tanks nodding his head signaling that it was their time for them to make their move. I was lifted into the air, carried by their arms as they followed behind Tyler to the outside world.
I was too engrossed about how far away from humanity I was, the whole building section I was in could of passed as a real functioning hospital, but once you go down the flight of stairs it's straight out of a haunt house! The walls have crumbled, the paint was peeling, pipe were - busted- you get the point- point of being trapped- away from them- from us. The sound of civilization- of life was getting louder with every flight we descend.
I get to see people again! P-people who- I want to descend- descend down under- live my life- I need to go back- bring me there! I looked down the last flight palms sweating from seeing the door just a few steps away- but that's a lie- something's coming up the steps! Someone who should be dead- is dead- I saw them die- cause I made them die- why is Saya coming- she's here. They were right- like always her half of a corpse was crawling it's way up the steps, her neck looked broken as it laid on her back, here eyes bore into mine as a angry frown was sketched on her face.
"Davvidd...it's your fault...that I...I'm dead." No, NO we need to go back up the stairs! "She's going to get me! We n-need to go back!" I kicked around knowing full well that I was too far lifted in the air to make any progress too go back up the stairs, and back into my padded room of safety. She's nearing now, she's going to grab my feet, I pulled my feet to my chest as tears pooled around my eyes. Tyler was then in front of me, but I could still see her climbing the last few steps. "David it's OK!" She needs to be gone- kick him- get her- KICK HIM!
"Get away from me!" I screamed at her yet she failed to falter her pace, a smile was now stretching on her skin. And that's when I kicked Tyler I watched scared that he would miss a step and go flying over her but it went as planned. He fell right on her causing her to scream- within a blink she was gone- and so was he. One of the Tanks handed me off to the other as he quickly rushed down the stairs. I blinked away the black dots that started to form to see Tyler at the bottom of the stairs, his neck was at an odd angle as it laid on his back, his face shown such a surprised expression- like he didn't see Saya coming. He...he looked like Saya.
I started to hyperventilate, no, no! Saya killed him! She grabbed him and dragged her down with her! "She killed him- dragged him- she did- fucking bitch- the steps- the stairs- the neck- he- it was her." My hands shook, if they could kill a human like that...then they would have no problem killing me! The Tank that held my body made it's way down when the other one growled something- they're talking about me- they want to kill us.
The Tank the wasn't holding me nodded, glanced at me then left. He's going to get Nathan- he's going to tell him to kill me- we have to get out- get free-like a bird- a bird that had it's wings clipped. But the door once again opened, letting in Nathan along with two Hunters, a Smoker and that Tank. I stopped my motions and just watched him crawl his way to me. He doesn't seem to be in a good mood.
"You know I was going to let you out, but since it seems that you keep killing your teammates, I change my mind. Bring him back but with the one without the window." With that said he turned away and for me, I was being lifted back up the stairs. "No, NO! NATHAN YOU CAN'T BRING ME BACK THERE! W-WHAT WOULD SKITTLEZ THINK WHEN SHE HEARS THAT-"
Nathan stopped in the doorway, he turned his head slightly towards my direction, "Victoria is considered an enemy to the undead nation. If she were seen I'm going to kill her myself." I just looked at him shocked that this was the same Nathan that was with us from the very beginning. That this was the same Hunter who saved Skittlez countless times, who gave her cheek rubs and now he's a completely different person- saying that he's going to kill her.
"W-who are you?" At this he smirked but fully turned towards me, I was looking down on him- this being my last flight before I am in the hallway of Hell. "You haven't figured it out yet?" What is he getting at? "I'm Nathan, the Leader of the Dome's son. The one who's going to bring down that fucking bowl and anyone who's in my way, even if that means kill the one I love." I just stared at him, I kept staring ahead even when I was in my new found cell.
It was when it became pitch black that I snapped out of my daze. So...Nathan is the Leaders son.. so the reason why the Dome is after Nathan and Skittlez is because they want Nathan..Nathan who knows things about their leader and, other things...They want Skittlez to...get to Nathan. So, everything that's happened is his fault, he's the one who caused all this! EVERYONE IS DEAD BECAUSE OF HIM!
Anger flashed throughout my body, it was making my body shake violently. I couldn't hold it in, I had to let it out. So I screamed. I pounded my fist on the wall. Scratched at the door. I even started to punch myself in the face, just hoping that this was all but a bad dream. Hell I would rip off my boxers in anger if it wasn't for the fact that this particular cell is cold.
How dare he lock me- lock us- up in this cell! He needs me! Need's me he does- do he- yea- haha this is no is no was funny. "I was a respectable soldier! You turned me into something pathetic!" I screamed at the door just hoping that my words would reach Nathan. The yelling made my head feel itchy- must itch! Crouching I use my hand- no both of my hands- to scratch my head. "Fuck...Tyler..." I sniffed. "Why did you let them get you man, f-fuck." Laying my head down on the floor I took in deep breaths. With each breath I started to doze off, my vision started to tunnel, my head began to feel light like it held nothing- not even air felt this light. I felt my body connect to the ground as my mind created images turning them into motion pictures.
My dream seem to end all too quickly to my liking, as if I was not allowed to get a moment of peace in my life. My dreams were the only place were it was pure, untainted where I could actually live life or even be myself without the knowing of what's really going on. But the sounds of constant explosions, screams and gunfire interrupted my sanctuary. The violent rumbling that resembled an earthquake would shake my body every now and then jerking me back into reality.
At first I had thought that I was in some sort of nightmare, yet when a part of the ceiling fell almost crushing me I immediately thought otherwise. I tried to stand but the rumbling caused me to loose my balance, I had to grip the wall for some support but it seemed that even that didn't really help. This room had no window to the outside so I had no inkling on what was going on.
Practice?
A thunderous boom made its way to my ears, a muffled sound of something coming down followed shortly after. I had thought that someone was breaking their way into the building, my thoughts quickly pointing to Skittlez since this was something she would do. I was sadly mistaken when dust quickly started to seep thou the cracks of the door, clouding the room with such thick dust that even when I cough I could feel the debris begin to layer in my lungs.
"The fuck is going on?!" I managed to cough out, it's like a war zone out there.
The room was so dense that my body collapsed onto the ground, my throat becoming raw as it felt like I was going to cough up my lungs. My eyes burned forcing me to shut them, even if I had open my eyes the room was dark enough that I wouldn't be able to see my hand in front of my face. The only thing that I could come up with to explain what's happening was that we were practicing some sort of demolition that I just so happen to be by.
"You know what's happening."
That voice...squinting towards the sound of the voice I struggled to see though my blurry eyes. He can't be here. I could feel my blood run cold from the thought of Him being trapped in the same room as me. The one that I tried so desperately to avoid could very well be in the very room, to make matters worse I can't escape.
I could feel my heart beat become irregular as I tried to muster up syllables to form words., but my throat tightened as it became dry. With each word he took a step closer to me, "I've waited this long David, waited for you to finally accept me. But now look what's happening to you- to me!" He stopped right in front of me, his bare feet right under my nose. The mere presences of him felt like weights were on my back pushing me towards the ground as if my body wanted to bow to Him. I fought this is pressure- my arms shaking trying to hold up my weight. My concentration slightly faltered when another explosion erupted, yet this time causing the my building to shake. The sound of the beams groaning was haunting, the way my body slid to the wall as if I was on some sort of ride did flops to my stomach.
"You damaged this body long enough, it's time for me to take it back whether you like it or not!"
My mind was spinning- what was He saying? "N-no it's mine! I'm not you- I'm David the soldier!" I slammed my fist on the ground slightly frustrated that I can't convince him, but in truth I was trying to convince myself. I looked at him, he was exactly like me but one thing was different, his clothes. They were familiar, yet I couldn't remember ever wearing them. His Halloween like clothes stood out, yes, so I should remember something so outrageous but it didn't jog any memories.
"No, you're not. You are David, the survivor. The man who would do anything to save his friends, the man who wouldn't prolong someone's death, and most of all- the man who wouldn't selfishly save his own ass knowing damn well what the hell is going on." His glare sent shivers down my spine, he looked disgusted like I was the devil himself.
Standing up I propped my hand to the wall for support, "You...you know nothing!" In a flash He was in my face, nostrils flared and eyes dangerously slit. He unclenched his jaw, "I know everything David! I know that you know full well what's goin-"
"YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING!" The walls shook as another booming sounded but this time it blew the door to my cage open. I wanted to run out that door but The Man kept me pinned in place with the intensity of his eyes. The Man stayed quite until the noise within the room died down. I looked him in the eyes- forcing myself to look at him.
His voice was soft yet stern, stressed as he questioned me. "Why is Tiff still alive? "
"Because she has infor-"
"Why didn't you leave the Dome knowing what they were after?"
"I didn't-"
"Why are you still siding with them?"
"What do you-"
"Why are you pushing away your true self? Why are you trying to be someone you're not?"
"I-I'm not!"
"Look what it's doing to you! You're trying to- to- to change yourself!"
"I'm not you!" I screamed breaking free of his spell, I pushed him away and out towards my new haven. I kept running not even looking back to see if He was following me, and even if he did I hoped that he didn't know his way around. Once I hit the stairs I started to take three steps at a time. I was half way down when yet another booming overtook the building I tried to hold onto the railing but the building was shaking to violently, the next thing I knew I was flung over the railing.
The wind was knocked out of me as my body smacked onto the cracked tile ground, the red flickering of the exit light taunted me. I could feel my whole backside start to bruise, the back of my head burned as a sticky substance started to pool around my eyes blacked out, the eyes itself throbbed. As quick as that boom came another quickly came as well, this one sounded like the whole building broke in half.
Shaking my head to clear my vision only made my heads throbbing intensify. Looking up I started to see the higher floors begin to lean to the left.
"Oh no.." Rushing to get up I dodged the falling debris, I limped to the door but the building moaned causing a beam to collapse on my leg, pinning me to the ground. I tried to ignore the pain that overtook my leg as I tried to craw to the exit that was mere a few inches away from me. 'If I don't leave now...I'll be crushed by the building' was the only thing that I was thinking. Another thunderous groan sounded and I was stupid enough to pause too look up wondering how long I have left.
But I saw Him looking over the railing mouthing the words "Hurry up" before that floor collapse. My heart raced, my blood pumped, my eyes widened while I watched the floors started to come down at an alarming rate.
I'm out of time.
Letting out a scream I strained on pulling my leg out, but it was no use. The corner of the beam was loged into my skin, I'll rip my skin clean off if I pull any harder. This is how I'm going to die, and practically naked too! I felt like crying as they floors started to get closer to me. Fuck. "Fine! You win!...you win." I was defeated by him, he finally won.
"Don't you dare give up!" B-Billy? There he was kneeling right beside me, looking how he was when I first met him.
"Come on Captain, you can do better!" Saya cheered from on top of the beam, her hair let down, looking like an angel.
"My boyfriend is too stubborn to die." On my other side was Tyler.
"G-guys." I couldn't believe it-
"Pull!" They all yelled in unison, not giving it a second thought I did as they said, and even though it ripped a strip of skin off my leg I was free. I locked on the door my legs wanted to give up but I wouldn't let them, I won't let my friends down when they just help me escape. Reaching out my hand to that doorknob I could feel the floor above me start to collapse, when I got it open I flung myself out- the area I was just in was no longer there.
Dust picked up sweeping over me towards the other streets so they too could be covered in a dark mist. I covered my mouth trying to limit the amount of dust that would get in my lungs, squinting I struggled to find shelter. The air was icy cold- immediately causing my body to shiver and the way my hands, knees and feet sunk a bit it seemed that it snowed.
Just how long was I locked up?
It was silence for about three seconds before more gun shots, screams, explosions and much more came from all around me. Deeming this area dangerous I went against my fears and started to run to my right. If I was in a building then I would have exited in some sort of ally, straight would be a wall, left would be a dead end so I hope right would go towards a street. Yet if I'm right then I'm in the middle of a big fire fight- I have to lay low..and get some clothes it's fucking cold as dicks out.
I kept crouch walking with one of my hands out until I hit a brick building sliding my hand around the wall finding a door. Good, time to find a knob- a body collided into the door shoving me to the side a bit. I nearly puked at what I saw; the Hunter's head was clearly broken, it's spin was jutted out of his neck his head swinging from the lil flying he just did, his whole right arm was tore clean off and his leg had more bullet holes than skin. His stomach was gone, I could see the dusty snow below him.
Turn my attention back on the door I was glad that the dust hasn't let up just yet, the fight must me right behind me.
"Yes!" I slowly opened the door since I didn't want it to creek if I had opened it fast. I was going to close the door, wait here until the dust is cleared but I rethought my plan. When the dust is cleared I would be visible- they would shoot me thinking I would be on the enemy team...I should take this inadvisability to my advantage. Glancing at the door I made up my plan, just hopefully it was good enough.
By the time I was dressed in the Hunter's outerwear and his blood was covering me like another layer of skin the commotion outside died down. They must have moved to a different location. Looking at the clock I had found in this flower shop it said it was 10:10pm, it's too dangerous to be out this late, especially not knowing what's actually going on. Yes there was a fight, but how big of a fight and with whom?
"I'm gonna have to wait until morning..shit." I sat in the back of the store watching the windows that took up most of the stores walls in the front. They dust was long gone having the night take its place, I could see the snow falling whenever the burst of flashes from the fight that was still going on in the distance. The silence that winter brought made the situation eerie- you could hear the ghost of the gunshots that echoed but even with everything that you heard it felt...peaceful.
I looked at the dying flowers watched as some of their petals floated to the ground. "Heh bad omen...baaaad omenn." I looked towards the dead bodies that I had found when I came into this place, I moved them to the other side of the room- they were just...sad to look at. They were infected yes, but the way they had died just seemed like normal people, too normal for any infected to die. Seeing them brought new light into my perception of the undead. They were people, normal people, they were just different- you don't see us shun people who have cancer or even a lazy eye- no we help them or even accept them because they were human. I don't know what Skittlez and Nathan planned on doing but I had a good guess.
"They wanted to live a normal life." I said no one. Sure the way they wanted to do it was slightly off but I get it. Take down the dome, mingle with the 'humans', live together as one. All the Dome wanted was to expand and become something like a dictator, they didn't want to accept another kind. The poor people living in that shell was being brainwashed thinking that all the infected on the other side were monsters. Hell even the soldiers were brainwashed.
"12:01...I guess a power nap wouldn't hurt, but where?" The whole shop was a mess with contents I knew and others I didn't want to know. The only actual clean-ish place was behind the counter but that has a Boomers body parts frozen to the floor. I didn't really want to find warmth close to a frozen body. My body shivered just thinking about the temperature outside. I guess I'm going to have too take the sheet off of them. I thought as I crawled over to the dead bodies.
I yanked the sheets I had put on them and wrapped me up in them, "I'm sorry." Crawling to the corner I looked at the clock again. 12:05, I set the alarm to 8 in the morning, that should be enough time to escape the city. O.K time for a power nap, if I'm lucky the fighting would stop by then. The quite sounds of crunching snow put me to sleep.
The beeping of the alarm clock just wouldn't SHUT. UP. No matter how many time I slammed that thing against the wall it just kept on beeping. "Fine! You win clock!" I got up and yanked the clock towards me so I can shut that infuriating thing off. Once that thing was off it was silent and I mean dead, silent. No gunshots, no screaming, not even the sound of buildings falling just, silence.
Getting up I put the blanket back on the bodies but my eyes were looking out the window. I slowly walked towards the glass door, pressing my hand on the cold surface my breath lightly fogging the glass.
Bodies both infected and soldiers littered the street a light coat of snow was over them. Some were even entangled in the cable wires, some were hanging out of windows, in cars, huddled together. I put on the shoes I found in a daze hesitant to even step out of this shop. What happened? The ring of the bell on top of the door was haunting as I stepped on my first patch of snow that didn't have a body on it. I headed down towards where the fight was when I went to sleep, in the meantime as I made my way down there I looked for survivors.
All of the streets were nothing but the dead, not even normal infected dared to come near the city. My soft footsteps were the only source of noise within miles, I felt...alone. My heart dropped when I saw a mother and child infected hugging each other, a hole in both of their heads. I picked up my pace but stopped when I saw one of my teammates.
"Oh god..." Her body had multiple bullet holes in it the frozen puddle of blood below her reflected her hanging body from the cable wires. The two poles were leaning in her direction has her neck was wrapped around the said wires, her white long hair was nothing but knots that entangled themselves in the wire above her. "Cristina?" I manged to whisper out. " David, she's gone." Billy squeezed my shoulder shoving me away from her.
The walk down a single street felt like it took hours having me no other choice to look at all the of the people who lost their lives. Body bags were everywhere as were the abandoned military cars. Looking at the military car that looked at if it was exploded, the charred bodies inside it did flops to my stomach. I was already on 5th street, five more streets before I hit the main highway, and I had yet to find a single person alive. I sighed, what will I do now? Go back to the Dome? They would kill me for sure if I even tried to step foot on their land. Looking at the street name ahead reading '4th street' I felt my body get heavy with dread.
Turning on the street I saw one of many things, the first thing I saw would make me smile if this wasn't such a depressing day. I stood there taking in the scene before me; Tiff was dead that was for sure. She was sitting against a car, the amount of swords that could fit into a single body was astonishing and the little message that was put beside her had it's own little humor. "Bitch learned today" I read aloud, a small twitch in my lips perked up. Looking above Tiff was a weapon store. Looking at the other thing I found which was a trail of blood, black blood, infected blood. It could be Skittlez, yet again it's a one in a million chance that it could be her. Taking that chance I followed that blood all the way to 2nd street.
My breath hitched in my throat as I saw a back hooded figure with neon green spikes laying in the middle of the road. "Skittlez?" I said not really believing it was her yet, when the figure twitched I called out to her again. Another twitch. "Skittlez!" I ran up to her- dropping to my knees I was about to turn her on her back when she swiped at me growling, giving me such a scary screech. "GET AWAY FROM ME!" Came a voice that didn't match her voice. It sounded like her but mixed with a guys, as if two people were talking. "Best friend it's me." I tried to touch her again only for her to screech at me. I fell on my back-end when she tried to grab at me. "Best, friend?"
She lifted her head in my direction a mean snarl laced her mouth, her nose scrunched up. I backed away seeing as she tried to crawl her way towards me. It was when she started to her her body is when I noticed that her whole left side was gone, from below her boob to her hip all the way to the middle of her stomach was completely gone. My mouth just dropped I was flabbergasted. Moving my eyes to her face I saw a deep gash that was across her face no doubt a hunter mark. Which reminds me I asked where Nathan was as I backed up onto the sidewalk, thinking that if I talked to her about something familiar she would snap out of her crazy state.
To no prevail she just desperately tried to crawl to me snapping her jaws telling me silently that he wanted to bite me. "B-best friend it's me, David! Davie, David...Best friend?" She stopped, "...David?" She remembered! Crawled back up to her new hope blossomed inside me, she was fine- one person was fine! "Yeah it's me, I'm here. I'm here to...ah...to..to um actually I don't know really I was just finding someone who was alive. But you're alive!" I helped her up so she could sit on her legs I then help her stay up. "Why are you here? Why...wh..?" I gave her a hug, "It doesn't matter I'm just glade you're O.K." She stiffened but that was to be expected since she doesn't like hugs and all.
It was when she pushed me away hard enough that she fell on her shoulder and me back on my backside. "Get away! Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill kill kill!" She quickly reached out her hand but she stopped her self. I watched as she held her arm back with her other hand, her whole person was shaking as she tried to hold back that hand from getting to me. I jumped when she slammed her head down on the snow, I could hear the grinding of her teeth.
"No! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO NO NO NO NO NONONONONONO NO!" She was fighting something...that's right. They all have that split personality thing she must be fighting that.
"Skittlez-"
"Kill me."
"What?!"
"Please." Her voice cracked as she pleaded me once more. "Kill me." She sounded as if she wanted to cry. "..no..NO! There has to be someth-"
"I DON'T WANT TO BE A MONSTER! I...don't want to kill..people any more." I scooted closer to her not caring anymore if she hurts me. If I die then I would like to die by my best friend. "You're not a monster. We...we can find something...like a cure-" She laughed. "Even if there was it's too late for me, look at me David I'm not meant to-"
"Then infected m-"
"No! No...this isn't something you want." I tried to speak but my voice cracked, stopping to clear my throat I spoke again but I was a mess. "You can't expect me to lose you again?"
"The gun is-"
"Stop Victori-"
"THE GUN is in the holster on the girl who I was next to on the street. Hurry I can't hold...much longer." Silently getting up I held back my tears as I walked over to where she said the gun was. She was right, it was there I could hear low growled emitting from her. Seeing if it was loaded, which it was I sadly looked back at my best friend. She was going to do it by herself...She was starting to twitch. The walk back to her was all but too fast for my liking. Her snarl was back on her face drool was making its way out of her mouth.
"Do it." Lifting the gun I aimed it for the back of the head, it took a while for my hand to steady and once it did I closed my eyes. "I can't." I dropped my hand letting out my breath I was holding into to steady my hands.
"DO IT!" Her voice sounded demonic. Lifting my arms again I let a sob escape, aiming I let my arms shake just a little. "Love you best friend."
