I do not own L4D

The statue in the middle of town that have I visited daily held many names of my friends. Some I didn't even know, such as 'Billy'. The statue though is no longer what it use to be, it's now just a historical marker. Telling kids of what use to be but they no longer even know that such a thing existed. They just mumble the work 'infected' because they don't want to learn it in school. They world has long been purged of such things. It's been so long since zombies roamed the earth, even my old memory of them fading quickly with my age. And soon along with me, the memories of what use to be would die. I can still remember that winter like it was just yesterday. The falling snow, the harsh winds, the bodies...the realization of what I was.

I rushed towards the section the Dome secured off, the guards already pointing their guns ordering us to slow down. I didn't waver my pace as he begun to shiver his body already dragging as I tried to pull both of our weights. My own body screamed for rest for my own wounds were bleeding out, but I didn't feel them at the time. My adrenaline in a rush from the battle and the mere fact that my captain is in dire need of medical attention. "Marcelo, Elite 39, section ghost bring him to medical at once!" A sigh of relief escaped me as they lowered their guns.

I handed him off to the medics as the other ushered me into a empty medical tent to treat my wounds. I didn't ask why they let us in so easy and frankly I didn't care. Sitting on the cot I let them do their job as exhaustion took over my body. Closing my eyes the scenes that unfolded before me the past few days replaying in my mind, tears wished to fall but for once, I did not let them. Not now, it's not the right time now. I only opened my eyes when the head doctor coughed to get my attention.

"Well, you're not in need of going to the emergency tent yet I can't say the same for your captain. So do you want to hear the good news or bad first?" He looked more tried then I am. his glasses were crooked and he smelled like blood. "Good news, please I need it." He flashed a smile that didn't reach his eyes as he went on to describe my damage.

"You have a fractured rib, sprained wrist, dislocated shoulder which we already took care of, popped out knee don't know how you managed to walk here let alone bringing someone with you and a broken ankle. We will need to transport you to Dome to properly amputate the leg since frostbite has already gotten to it due to its...ah...twisted state- a chopper is already on its way. Ah some of your fingers need to be in splinters and your nose was out of place, again already fixed." Looking down at my leg to find that my foot was facing behind me and the skin was stretched from the twist. Oh. Ew.. "We also found a incredible discovery while we did some blood work. It seemed that you had infected blood in your bloodstream yet you show no signs of changing. We have our doubts but we wish to do some test on you, with y-your consent of course." Blinking a few times I cocked my head to the side, "Are you telling me that I'm, immune?" He pushed up his glasses, "We have our doubts but yes, if this is true then we can make a cure!" A cure? My thoughts going back to Jacob.

Looking back up to find the doc was in a chair, "And the bad news?" The doctor took off his glasses to rub his eyes, the excitement gone "When we stripped him to due full body examination we found a chunk of his ah, shoulder gone." He looked at me hoping that I would figure out what he was trying to tell me. "He's been bitten. He's already in the early stages of changing the Leader took him-"

"Leader's here?!" I stood up, the pain of my injuries coming into effect. "AH!" I fell to the ground making the doctor rush to help me up. "You're in no con-" Rushing him away I told him to just give me pain pills, "I-I'm sorry but we need you safe-!" Grabbing onto his coat I pulled him close, my voice wavering, "I'll let you do your experiments if you just let me go." The light flicked back on in his eyes as he turned towards the nurses who was peeping in on us to hurry to help me up.

As we walked to where Leader was I couldn't help but notice a group of elites rushing towards the entrance. Zombies?

"And what is he doing out of the medical tent?" Looking back ahead I saw Leader for the first time. His light brown hair almost balding, his blue eyes held authority and age was not nice to him. He looked tired yet he kept a straight back as he stood in front of the fire that held the bodies of the soldiers. Jacob turned towards us surprised to see me, I took note of his pale complex and reddened eyes. The doctor dismissed the nurse as he handed off me to Jacob telling the leader that he had things to discuss with him.

Jacob threw my arm around his shoulder as we headed for the wall, I slid down on the wall not minding the cold snow on my ankle. Jacob decided to lean against it, his arms behind his back as we watched the doctor and Leader discuss my business.

"So, I'm immune." Out of the corner of my eye I saw him jump. "...Out of everyone it had to be you." The corner of my lip twitched in a smile. "Don't be a betch Jacey or I'm not curing you." We looked eyes, a silent conversation spoke between us.

"I'm afraid that's not possible." Looking up to find that they had finished their little conversation and was already standing in front of us. "What do you mean?" A frown now replacing that twitch of a smile. The Leader excusing himself when a soldier needed his assistance, they took their conversation by the fire so we wouldn't be able to hear. The doctor pushed up his glasses glancing at Jacob, "I'm afraid Jacob is too far in the process."

"But can't we use my blood right now so we can cure him?!" I tried to stand up but Jacob pressed down his hand on my shoulder to keep me seated. "Without proper research and test we don't know what the result would be if we did that. It could make his process worse. On the bright side you, Marcelo are welcomed back to the Dome to do as you wish. But I'm afraid that Jacob here needs to be dealt with as soon as possible."

"I will do it alone" I stared at the ground feeling my heart sink. This day is the worst.

"Excuse me?" We both said with equal shock. Not even bothering to at us he said, "Before you leave I'll take go out and do it there." It was silent for a few seconds before we said anything. "As you wish, when your business with Leader is done come see me for some quick blood work." Once the doctor was gone Jacob spoke such words in such a normal voice it was stunning. "Just don't burn my body." Giving a smile at his twisted words I hear what sounds like marching coming our way. I was shocked to see David, he looks like shit but he's alive. Seeing him look my way I gave him a wave but my eyes caught the cause of everything. Victoria. Glaring at her now dead corpse in the arms of the soldier glad that she's no longer living.

We exchanged curious looks before Jacob said, "Wonder what they're doing here."

"Who cares." I said colder than I originally wanted to sound.

"Maybe we might get answers, come on lets go check it out." Grinding my teeth I gave in, letting Jacob help me walk we made out way over. When we by them Leader held It with far too much care while David looked like he was about to rip his head off. The rest of the soldiers were on edge not that I blame them since they're with a psychopath.

"You are upset, I understand. We did things I am not proud of but it was necessary but you must understand it was for the better good." What is Leader talking about? "Killing innocent people-" David tried to argue but Leader was quick to stop him, "They were infected David."

"They were the same as us! They had thoughts and feelings!" The soldiers held David as one pressed his gun harden to his back as a warning. The leader took no mind to his comment for he just brushed the bangs out of Skittlez's eyes. I don't even know why he was still even holding It. The thing was gross and should be thrown somewhere, I don't even want to look at her that's how much I hate her. "But I must ask, what were you planning on doing?" Leader asked David. Both Jacob and I glance at David wondering the same thing. What was he going to do with a dead body?

"I...I was planning to find a nice place for us to...rest." Oh. "Ah, sir." Jacob stepped up closer and I saw that David looked him over. Does he know? When realization hit his eyes I wondered if he finally got the hint on what was wrong with Jacob, and that it was all his friends' fault. "Why don't we bring both of them with us back, give him a second chance like you granted us."My eyes widened at what Jacob suggested. I wouldn't mind bringing David cause he could get help but not Victoria! No freaking way! Leader seemed to think on it before turning back to David, "David if I allowed you a second chance would you take the offer?" Please say yes.

"No. No I was with her from the beginning and I plan on being with her to the end." The leader nodded dismissing Jacob but told me to report to the medical tents. Nodding I got the hint and made my way out, before I left the tunnel I looked back to see that Jacob returned to his spot by the wall, but he was watching making sure that nothing would go out of hand.

Yet I didn't know things would turn for the worst. As I was giving my blood I heard people outside the tent people rushing towards the tunnel speaking that a fight is going on. It was when I finished and stepped out of the tent I heard a gun shot. I didn't even have time to check it out before the whole area was under lock down thinking it was another attack. I was taken away towards the highway. The helicopter already in view of coming to get me. It was when it came and we lifted off I could see what had happened.

I had pressed my head against the window not believing what I was seeing. David sprawled out blood all around his head. It was also when we started to take off towards the Dome I saw Jacob out in the street waving goodbye to me. I didn't have the heart to look back at him. Half way to the Dome it dawned on me that all my friends are dead, that I was alone. I remember that I cried a whole lot, the nurse and doctor trying to comfort. I just held my head between my legs repeating one phrase as I cried.

"You promised."
