"I want full access to the medical room and supplies." Trafalgar Law stands in front of the great Whitebeard himself as he waits for his reply. The atmosphere feels heavy, and Law tries his best to stand firm even though he's shaking on the inside. This man was powerful, terribly powerful. "Sir." He finishes awkwardly.
There's a pregnant silence wondering through the room, and neither of them say a word. Law feels as if he can't even breathe, he just wants to get out of here. However, he'll stand strong for the one he has to protect. To protect her he has to save her first.
"You entertain me." Suddenly, the great man in front of him throws his head back and laughs. He laughs so loudly that the room shakes and Law struggles to keep his balance. "Permission granted."
Law's eyes widen greatly in surprise. Surly, it couldn't have been as easy as that. He was a stranger, so why the hell was this man simply allowing him access to the medical facilities? The frown on his face deepens in thought. He opens his mouth without thinking. "Why?"
"Why? Well in a way, you and I share a same goal." The man hardens his eyes, "To protect."
Law doesn't say anything. "
OoO
Knock, Knock, Knock.
Luffy's body jolts as it wakes up, her eyes flutter open and blink towards the ceiling. She wipes her eyes with the backs of her fists and tries to clear up her blurry vision. Rolling onto her side, she unexpectedly falls out of bed and thumps onto the ground. Much to her disdain, the annoying knocking persists and she groans slightly, feeling the need to pull a pillow over her head and cover her ears so she can go back to sleep.
It might be Law, though.
She springs to her feet at the thought of seeing Law again, she steadily yet quickly walks over towards the door and leans on it. She's unable to see through the small crack of the door and so she frowns, deciding to speak rather than just open the door. She wasn't supposed to until she was absolutely sure it was Law. "Who is it?"
"Someone here with your lunch." The man on the outside of the door says with a slightly annoyed tone, Luffy can tell that he's rolling his eyes by the tone of his voice. Right now it was obvious that this was the last thing he wanted to do right now, but Luffy could care less about that. She could practically smell the food on the other side of the door and her stomach rumbles as she tries to imagine what kind of food he's holding. "Hurry up it's getting cold."
"Law told me not to leave the room." Her eyes open wide at her mistake, and because she doesn't know what else to do she can only listen to the brief silence that slowly passes by.
"There's no Law that says you have to stay in there." She sighs in relief and slides down onto her feet, finding herself already slightly tired from the extremely short walk from her bed to the door. "I'm taking time to deliver food for you so hurry up and take it already!"
"Loke says not to take food from strangers." The corners of her lips shift down and she crosses her arms over her chest. "I don't know you."
"I'm Portgas D. Ace. Now hurry up and let me in!"
Her eyes widen and her body begins to shake. Finding her legs shaking far too much for her to stand, she scrambles away from the door as fast as she can. Her back hits the hard wall behind her and she takes this moment to bury her head into her chest and cover her ears with her hands. The knocking continues, and the man on the other side of the door plays with the handle and she hears it. She hears it!
"Luko?" He asks again, and he hears that too. What she hears even more, is that same child like Ace yelling at her and telling her to leave. His voice is familiar, his voice is so fucking familiar because it's him. She doesn't want to talk to him, hell, she never thought she'd meet him again! If he finds out who she is he'll yell at her again! Maybe he'll hurt her too!
Oh god, is Sabo here too?
"For gods sake, fucking starve then!" She tries her best to ignore him, even as he sighs angrily and begins muttering swear words. Finally, everything stops. The violent swearing stops, the knocking stops, and the footsteps stop.
There's knocking on the door again.
"It's me." She slowly releases herself and carefully stands on two still shaking legs, she takes small steps towards the door she now can't wait to open. She knows who's on the other side, she knows whose voice that is. It's Law. Thank god, it's Law. Her hand drops onto the metal doorknob and she twists it open. The boy on the other side enters the room and closes the door behind him. He doesn't lock it this time and instead stands in front of it. Despite these suspicious actions, she feels calmer than she's ever been before at the mere sight of him. "Law..." She whispers underneath her breath, and he turns to face her with a slight look of worry. However, she sees relief in his eyes as well. Relief for what, though?
"What's wrong?"
She doesn't speak again, and instead chooses to reach out for him and pull him into one of the tightest hugs she's ever given. She buries her face into his chest for as long as she possibly can before he can ask any questions. Ultimately, he does. "Something's wrong, right? What is it?"
She bites her lip and lies, "Nothing."
She was never good at lying, and she knows Law can tell because he narrows his eyes and chooses not to say anything. He changes the subject completely. "I've got access to the medical facilities." He pauses, "I'm going to help you."
OoO
The air is cold and Luffy doesn't like it. She just wants to go back to bed yet she knows Law won't let her, not right now anyway. Another thing she doesn't like is the cold operating table she's lying on, but maybe she could have put up with that if only she weren't wearing a medical gown. She sighs and shifts her eyes towards the door that's been both closed and locked, and then she turns towards Law who's shuffling through medical implements.
"Are you scared Luffy?" He asks with his back turned her to. She sends him a questioning look that he can't see, because really, what was he referring to? Earlier when she discovered... He was here... or right now since she could die during this very operation. "Of this operation."
"Why would I be, I've got Law as my doctor." Luffy smiles brightly as he approaches her, taking her arm into his hand and silently pushing a needle in. She doesn't flinch. "Because it's a made law that I stay alive."
"Of course." Law smiles back at her a he finishes pushing the liquid into her skin. Luffy always found the way to joke around in a serious situation, and yet for some reason instead of annoying him it calms him down. Her carefree personality is rubbing off on him and he doesn't know how to feel about it, so he simply goes with it. "You've got to obey Law."
She blinks for a moment, and then she gets it. She punches him lightly, "Hey..." and yawns.
"Sleep tight Luffy, when you wake up everything will be better."
Her eyes close, and as she slips into unconsciousness the last thing she sees is Law holding her hand.
She smiles.
oOo
Law is a doctor.
He's knows far more than any normal doctor due to his years on that ship with Luffy, which proved to be more of a good thing than a bad thing. Law loves being a doctor, he loves operating and he loves knowing things. So, as a doctor, he's no idiot. This type of operation would normally not only endanger the patients life if anything went wrong, but it would also mean the patient would lose a lot of blood. Hell, he's pulling sea stone out of a human body, of course there would be blood.
Thank god.
Thank god he ate the Ope Ope no mi. Without his obtained devil fruit powers, then there would have been blood everywhere and he would have most likely lost his only friend, his only family member. He frowns as he places the sea stone shards on a table across from Luffy before returning to her side, she seemed so peaceful. She looked as if everything was better and there was nothing really wrong in the first place. She looks healthier. She's breathing more and her skin is regaining slight color. Yet, there's still something wrong.
She's not completely healthy.
His gaze shifts to the sea stone shards he had managed to pull from the first layers of her skin, five god damn pieces. This, this horrible experiment Luffy was forced to go through had to have gone on for years because there were just so many damn pieces! This healing process was going to take a lot longer than he expected, it could take years for him to safely remove every single last shard from her skin!
So, he'll get better.
He sits down next to her and brings her hand into his. He can't help but smile when she unconsciously leans towards him and sighs in her sleep. She depends on him, she needs him. And so, it's at this very moment that he decides on something. From this point on he'll work harder. He'll study and he'll practice thousands and thousands of times if it helps.
From this point on, he'll become the best doctor in the world.
Just for Luffy's sake.
OoO
"She's annoying."
The blond haired man tiredly shifts his eyes towards his brother across the room, and despite how much he wants to sleep right now he decides to participate in Ace's one sided conversation. "Who is it this time, Ace?"
"That girl, Luko." The young man now known as Ace replies with disdain as he crosses his arms over his chest, rolling onto his back and staring up at the ceiling. He narrows his eyes and clicks his tongue as he continues speaking. "She's just as inconsiderate as that other guy... What was his name?"
"Loke?" Sabo asks, and he doesn't even have to look over to know that he's right. He continues talking after he hears Ace nod out of the corner of his eye, he's far too lazy to turn and face him right now. He can't help it, he's tired. It's midnight right now and he's being kept awake by his brother, he was supposed to be asleep two hours ago. "I heard he had the guts to demand use of the medical facilities from the old man."
Ace growls underneath his breath, clenching his fists in anger at the very mention of such disrespectful actions. He clamps his mouth shut. "Apparently there's something wrong with his sister and he's trying to help her. Considering they came from a ship they were prisoners in, it's highly unlikely that he would have any medical knowledge." Sabo draws out as a frown slowly forms on his face. "He's probably making things worse rather than helping her."
"So... He's going to be the reason his sister dies."
The two brothers exchange glances and after a few seconds, they simultaneously jump to their feet and head towards the door.
OoO
Law's beginning to think that Luffy's slipped into a concussion. It's been five whole hours since she got out of the operation and she hasn't even shown a slight sign of waking up. He rubs the top of her hand with his thumb in a comforting motion, but really it's more for himself than her. Right now all he wants her to do is wake up and give him another one of her deathly hugs that he's come to love.
He frowns, taking a sip of water from the cup next to him and putting the now empty cup down. He wants her to be healthy again, and when that happens he wants to get off this ship. Sure, they were saved by these people but... Luffy felt uneasy around them, she seemed so upset last time he left her alone. It would be best for both her and himself if they were to find somewhere else to stay... Somewhere safe.
But where?
At that very moment, the door thuds open loudly. The vibration causes his glass cup to fall from the table and shatter on the wooden floor. Law scoffs, not even bothering to turn around to see who entered the room. He won't turn his back on or away from Luffy for such a stupid reason. "What do you want." He grits out, his voice full of annoyance directed towards whoever broke through the lock to enter the room.
"We can help," A man with blond hair enters the room and walks until the point where he's standing directly across from him. "It's not much, but I've got basic knowledge on treating injuries."
"The only nurse on this ship was killed two days ago, we haven't found a good replacement yet." The second man enters, taking a place next to his brother and pulling out another chair to sit on. Law glares and doesn't say a word. Inwardly, he wonders why these people can't mind their own god damn business and leave him and Luffy alone. "What's wrong with her?"
"Mind your own business." Law replies with a glare, "I've taken care of her already."
"Tch." Ace clicks his tongue in annoyance for the second time that day, "We save you from drowning and give you everything you need and yet you continue to act like a spoiled brat. This isn't your ship, it's Whitebeard's. We're trying to help here, you could at least tell us what's wrong."
Law rolls his eyes, but he knows that right now the best thing for Luffy is to heal in a safe place. If they're kicked off of the ship they could be thrown anywhere, and Law doesn't want that for Luffy. "She's fatally injured, there are⦠Sea stone shards in her back."
"Just remove them, then." Sabo speaks up, completely concentrated on both Law and the small girl resting in bed. Sabo's constant staring bother's Law, but he doesn't say anything and keeps his mouth shut.
"If it were that easy I wouldn't be so worked up about it," He says, wondering just how little this blond haired man actually knew about the human body. "She'd bleed out far before I could save her if I took out every piece of sea stone in one operation. Are you sure you're a 'doctor'?"
"He's not a doctor" Ace speaks up for Sabo as the blond takes this chance to grab one of the few chairs and sit down as well. "Yet neither are you."
"I'm a doctor. I've been training ever since I was forced to live on that ship, I know what I'm doing." His eyes narrow, "So tell me, what are you doing here right now? Surly, you knew that if I had been in the middle of an operation and you came in like you did, I'd flinch and make a mistake? It could have been your fault that she died."
"We just came to help, calm the fuck down." Ace glares back, staring pointedly at Law. His fists clench.
"He's right. We heard that you demanded the use of the medical facilities for your sister, so we decided we'd come to help." Sabo pauses as a frown slowly appears on his face and his eyes seem far more tired than they should be for a young man like him. He has worry and stress lines that he shouldn't have. "We know what it's like to lose a sibling. More specifically, a younger sister."
"She ran away years ago, we're still trying to find her." From his spot by the door, Ace sighs. "Imagine what that's like, having no idea where your little sister is and whether she's safe or not... We don't even know if she's alive anymore. She was only seven when she left us."
Law doesn't reply as he tries to imagine Luffy just disappearing one day, leaving him behind for years and never returning... He would hate it, but really he'd do anything to ensure her happiness. Even if it meant he had to suffer. He gazes down at her and arches his eyebrows, his grip tightens around her hand.
"How old are you, Loke?" Sabo asks, running his hand through his hair; his hat was missing, left behind in the room they were supposed to be sleeping in.
"I'm fourteen." Law states automatically, this time he's actually telling the truth rather than lying to then. Once again, his eyes shift down towards Luffy. "She's twelve..." Law pauses again, gazing at the two strangers in the room and it's at this moment that he realizes what his situation is. He's in a room with two strangers who he simply doesn't trust. So, he asks. "I don't believe I've met either of you."
"I'm Portgas D. Ace"
"I'm Sabo."
Law's eyes widen and his breath hitches, he tries his best to calm down despite wanting to leave this room with Luffy as soon as possible. He... He knows who they are, and... and...
And now he knows why Luffy had been so shaken up.
