A straw hat.

Luffy's straw hat.

"Why do you have that hat?" Law speaks with a shaky voice; he's just barely able to push the words he needs to say out of his mouth. His body trembles and he feels himself freeze in his spot. The two men; slightly taller, slightly older than him have never seemed so intimidating. Before, Law felt bigger than them. He felt as if he could hold his ground and protect Luffy from her nightmares... Now, underneath their gaze, he's just not sure anymore.

"We were going to ask the same thing." Ace growls. The tall, easily six foot man replies as he slams the hat into his brother's chest. He takes just a few heavy steps towards Law and grabs his shirt collar. Ace lifts the poor boy into the air, and despite having the upper hand of the conversation, can't help but feel extremely pissed off at Law's blank expression. He clicks his tongue against his teeth in annoyance; he grips the fabric even tighter. "If you hurt our sister in any possible way-" He's rudely cut off.

"I didn't hurt her... I don't even know your sister." Law replies, the lies rolling off his tongue as if they were practiced for hundreds of time until they reached perfection. He was just coming up with these on the spot, he was just lucky that he was so good at lying. Luffy however...

He shakes his head and tries his best to ignore the fact that his feet continue to dangle just above the ground. "That straw hat was just simply something I came across on one of the many islands I've been to. It was without an owner, lying on the ground and gathering dust. I simply gave it to... my sister."

"I don't give a flying fuck; all I know is, is that the hat belongs to my sister and no one else." Ace growls back in reply, dropping the young man onto the floor harshly. Law's body hits the ground with a thud, and he groans briefly from the pain of his body coming into contact with the hard ground. He rolls away from them and takes a crouching position.

"We're confiscating this hat. It's not your, nor is it your sister's." Law cracks a smile, a slight laugh leaving his lips as he stares up at the two brothers. "What the hell is so funny?!"

"Nothing, nothing at all." Law replies as he catches his breath, he stands to his feet and sluggishly moves his hands into his pockets. "It's just that I find it hilarious how you seem to believe that simply returning your sister's hat to her, that she'll forgive you. How stupid do you have to be to think that by simply returning an object that you'll be forgiven for years of torment!" Law laughs hysterically, throwing his head back and laughing until he comes to an abrupt stop. "You must be god damn retarded!"

Ace has never been so angry. He can't control the next thing he does; punching the young man in the cheek hard enough to leave a red mark that would probably turn purple later. As the boy withers on the ground, Ace pulls his leg back and slams it into his stomach. He moves to kick again, but this time Sabo places a hand on his shoulder and Ace stops himself.

"Let's look for Luko," Sabo begins as he kneels down and Law looks up at him. Sabo sneers, using one of his few acts of violence for the day by slamming Law's head into the ground. Who was he to laugh at them? Who was he to look down at them? Narrowing his eyes, Sabo is anything but gentle when he ties Law's hands behind his back. "We'll leave him. He can't do anything if he's tied up here."

"Fine."

"...You sure can eat, can't you girly?" The voice of a man whose name Luffy doesn't really remember the name of speaks over her shoulder as he washes the dishes he used to make her large meal. Luffy thinks he has a funny appearance; big brown hair a bright appearance, and a scar on his cheek.

Luffy blushes slightly at being caught shoveling down food like that. It was just so delicious and Luffy didn't really ask questions when she came in, following the alluring scent of food she didn't know the name of. Whatever it was, it smelled and tasted delicious. "That's your third plate."

Luffy replies with a nod, but really, to her, this wasn't a lot of food. When she lived on the island before everything begun heading in a darker direction, she found that she was able to eat enough food to feet at least twenty people. However to this day, with sea stone weakening her, she was only able to eat enough for three.

She couldn't even have solid food like the meat she loved, it didn't digest properly and it wasn't good for her. At least, this is what Law told her. He had said to stick to soup based meals if she felt hungry, since it was easier to digest and better for her body right now. Law was almost one hundred percent right, so Luffy listens to him. Gladly.

Having long forgotten her previous problems, she smiles widely as she claps her hands together. "Thank you for the food." She turns towards the man who had finally introduced himself to be 'Thatch. "Thank you Mr. Thatch, it was delicious!" The man smiles at her and places a hand on her head. She smiles, pulling herself out of the seat she had taken up and silently leaving the room.

She feels energetic, she feels as if she has more energy than she's ever had in years. This lifts her spirit generously. She can actually walk on her own two feet without needing assistance, and she doesn't exhaust herself when completing everyday tasks. It's wonderful.

She slings her arms behind her head and leisurely walks down the halls of the ship, turning in random directions until she stops so suddenly that she almost knocks herself over.

She dumbly blinks just a couple of times as she renders her thoughts running through them at a rate that would impress Law himself. She swivels on her feet and heads towards the direction she was one hundred and three percent sure that Law was waiting for her at.

She hoped Law wouldn't be mad at her for running off and leaving him with her problems.

She dodges into a corner the second two pairs of footsteps run past her.

A blond haired man and a black haired man run side by side, never once catching sight of the girl they were looking for as they run past."Ace, do you believe what Loke told us?" They've long since turned a corner and ran down a different hallway, and really just the simple sounds of footsteps echoing through empty spaces was annoying. There's a slightly annoyed twitch of the eyebrow that Sabo barely catches from Ace's expression. Ace didn't have to say a word for Sabo to understand what he was saying.

"I'm not that clueless."

"Sometimes I wonder..." Sabo mutters underneath his breath, just barely silent enough for his words to miss Ace's ears. He shakes his head for the briefest of seconds before returning his attention to the goal in front of them; finding Luko. However, his mind soon strays from the task once again. "Loke and Luko, their names are fake. They say that they don't have last names and that they're siblings... Yet they hide everything from us and it's obvious when the little one is lying."

"Luko?"

"Yeah." Sabo replies. "When Luko lies her eyes rest shift downwards and she fiddles with the hem of her shorts."

"Just like Luffy..." Ace mutters, "Doesn't Luko kind of sound like Luffy? The first two letters anyway. I'm pretty sure she has the exact same eyes Luffy does too..."

"The scar underneath her left eye is the same too, and her presence is really familiar." Sabo replies as they turn another corner, "Besides, Loke and Luko don't look anything like siblings. Luko has got to be Luffy, right?"

"It would explain why Luffy has that straw hat, it means everything to her..." Ace interrupts, "It would also explain why she ran off when we were talking."
The blond haired man grabs his head in anger and slight frustration, two emotions he usually never expressed. "How the hell didn't I realize this earlier?"

"Because you're an idiot." Ace deadpans. "But I guess I am too."

Luffy falls to her knees, panting heavily as she tries to catch her breath. Her hair is a ragged mess, blown in all different directions and absolutely refusing to stay down. She wipes the sweat off of her brow with a pale hand, soon dropping it down and covering her mouth. Coughing violently, she shakily switches on the light to the dark room and finally calms herself down. She's tired and she can feel her legs trembling, ready to collapse underneath her weight no matter how hard she tries to stand tall.

Her vision steadies itself, and as she stands up the first thing that she sees is the few specks of blood on the ground. She kneels down and places her pointer finger in it, testing the substance on her fingers and then bringing it to her nose. It was defiantly blood; but it was cold and slightly sticky. Luffy had to guess that it hadn't been there for too long, about an hour at least. Her eyes scan the room, and when she finally finds the source she feels her breath hitch.

Law.

Not Law.

They hurt Law.

Her enemies hurt Law.

What the hell did they do to Law!?

Luffy's hands quickly grab her head, holding it tightly until the pain was just too much to bare. She crawls over to him; just seeing his curled up position and the look of sheer pain on his face was enough to set her off. She bites her tongue and holds herself back; right now she has more important tasks to take care of.

The short, black haired girl falls to her knees the second she closes the door behind her. She hands wrap around herself as she tries to steady her breathing; at this point she can practically feel her heart beating out of her chest. She pulls his head into her lap and immediately runs her hands over his body, feeling for any injuries the blood could have come from.

As gentle as her shaky fingers can manage, she slides the fabric of his shirt off of his body. She drops the shirt to the ground and pauses, unmoving at the sight of a large purple bruise on Law's stomach. It looks new, like someone had kicked him repeatedly and just left him behind. The only ones who were in the room with him were Ace and Sabo... Luffy bites her tongue.

She looks down at him, catching sight of his ripped lip and the bruise appearing on the side of his face. That was where the blood came from. She uses the hem of her shirt to wipe off the blood, and she brings his body closer to hers.

Performing the task of pulling Law into bed for the second time that day is far easier said than done. The cutting of the rope that left angry red marks on his wrists was far easier to take care of. She covers his body with a thin sheet and props his head up with a pillow. He's never seemed so peaceful, finally getting the sleep he needed and despite this, she knows she'll have to wake him up soon.

The blood slowly dripping from her nose is hastily wiped away with the sleeve of her shirt.

She'll be there to prevent this next time, surly.

It will never happen again.

Ten minutes pass.

She sighs.

Law opens his eyes and at that moment his throat has never felt so dry and his head has never hurt so much before. He groans, his vision is far to blurry to make out the shapes or figures in the room. A hand barely touches his shoulder, it's warm and comforting and gentle so it's quite obvious who it is.

"Tired. I want to take a sleep." Though his wording is incorrect, Luffy understands him. She holds a cup of water to his lips and carefully tilts it. He drinks about half of the cup before pulling away. Luffy places the cup down beside him without a word.

"Sorry, I had to wake you up... I'm sorry for running off and leaving you alone..." The clenching of Luffy's fists goes unseen by the only other person in the room.

"You've got a... uh, concussion. You're vision is blurry, you can't concentrate on anything, and you're speaking in incorrect sentences. Go back to bed now, Law." As Luffy finishes her sentence, Law can't help but notice how much Luffy is taking after him. Not only is she slowly learning how to properly care for injuries, but she was also starting to sound like him. She's smart; though she's hopeless at times, she becomes serious when the time calls for it. He smiles, placing a hand on her head as he falls asleep.

She lies her head down next to him, and his hand unconsciously grasps hers.

She smiles.

Sabo and Ace silently track through the door of the doctor's office; both of them know fully where Luffy disappeared to. It was quite obvious actually; it was something they should have been able to figure out far earlier than they did. Ace leans by the door, having closed it just in case anything was to happen.

Sabo continues on, walking just a few steps further before stopping at the sight in front of him. They seemed so close to each other, it was almost bothersome but neither of the two brothers couldn't find even the tiniest bit of anger or annoyance within themselves.

"Hey, Ace, do you think she's happy?" Sabo finally says something; his voice is a mere whisper that Ace has to strain his ears to hear properly. For a couple of minutes Ace doesn't reply, he simply gazes at the two figures sleeping next to one another and keeps his mouth shut.

There's a ghost of a smile playing on Luffy's lips, and Ace almost wants to pretend he doesn't see it. There was one period of time when he thought that she couldn't be happy without them, without him, that was what had given purpose to his life... Now... Now it looked like she was doing perfectly fine without him and now Ace didn't know what to do.

It hurt.

"Yeah, she's happy." Ace replies automatically, he hastily pushes off of the wall and takes just a couple of steps to reach the bedside. The way Luffy sits doesn't look comfortable at all, her back is bent over and her legs hang over the edge of the chair. She sleeps soundlessly though, with her hand forever locked into Law's. His fists clench, and he places a hand on her head.

Right now, the only thing he wants to do is hug her. He wants to protect her again, he wants to be the great older brother that she once looked up to... but it's impossible now.

Sabo feels the same way. What reason did he ever have to hate her? He wonders why he sided with Ace all those years ago, he wonders why he kept it up for so long, and he wonders why he had to hurt her so much. He crouches down by her side and stares at her sleeping face. The fact that she holds onto Law's hand when she sleeps reminds him of when they used to sleep together, with Luffy in the middle and the two brothers on her right and left side. They'd hold hands too, and it was something both brothers missed incredibly.

"She doesn't need us anymore, does she?" Ace speaks up first and Sabo can only nod in reply, feeling pain in his chest far too great to force out any words. Both brothers silently lean forward, each kissing her cheek for the shortest periods of time before standing up. They turn their backs on Luffy, who's perfectly happy without them.

"We'll always love you, Luffy."

The door closes once again, and the once happy family remains broken.

Luffy closes her slightly parted eyes.
