"He would have loved you so much."
The hospital room was dark and quiet as he walked to the window, where soft moonlight let him see the tiny bundle in his arms.
This all felt like some kind of bad dream.
Behind him, he could hear Alex stir in her sleep. He had been with her since early in the morning, when she had called him and told him she was in labor. That was all he had needed to go straight to her home and take her to the hospital, and he had not left since then.
The tiny bundle in his arms stirred and snuffled and he instinctively began to sway back and forth.
Bobby had wanted to be a dad so badly.
Just the thought of his friend made his heart hurt. Since the day Alex found out they were going to have a baby, Bobby had been over the moon. He talked constantly about the baby's growth, names, and the kind of dad he hoped to be. He was going to do everything right, everything his own father had not done. He would have given his baby the moon.
None of them ever suspected he wouldn't have the chance.
He looked down at the newborn's crinkled face and sighed. "Your daddy was an amazing man, sweetheart. He loved you and your mom more than anything in the world. I'll make sure you know that."
She remained sleeping in his arms, her tiny mouth pursed thoughtfully.
There was a band on her tiny wrist that read Baby Girl Goren and he ached all over again. His best friend was dead, but he wasn't really gone. He could already see Bobby in his little girl's face.
"I'll look after them, Bobby. I promise," he murmured as he shifted the newborn in his arms and kissed her tiny forehead.
And Mike Logan was a man who always kept his word.
Fin.
