Skylar walked through Santalune, flanked by his two friends. He knew exactly where he was going, to the same place he'd been going to with the two, Santalune Forest. It made a great training area due to the fact that it was secluded and teeming with wild pokemon, if they weren't working on a move with a pokemon or sparring they could be fighting a vicious opponent.
"Hey guys, I just realized something." Tyler announced.
"What is it?" Kaila asked impatiently while her Pikachu looked at Tyler with the same impatience.
About two days prior Kaila had found and captured a Pikachu in Santalune Forest that soon warmed up to her. It didn't remain in its pokeball and instead rode around with her and because of that it had begun to mimic its trainer behavior and mood.
This had initially given Tyler a seemingly endless source of amusement until Pikachu shocked him into utter submission and left him totally dazed and as closed to being knocked out in a pokemon battle as a human can get. After that he'd been less overt about his enjoyment.
"All of our names rhyme." The teen replied.
Kaila's eyes widened and Skylar turned towards him and looked just as shocked, it truly hadn't occurred to any of them but now the fact seemed painfully obvious, and a little frightening as well.
"What does it mean?" Skylar asked contemplatively.
"Don't ask me, I'm just your average highly attractive, incredibly witty, multi talented, highly chiseled, well endowed joe." Tyler replied warranting a deadpanned expression from Kaila and a sigh from the other male.
"Anyway, we should probably get to training." Skylar replied before suddenly grinning at the memories he had...
Flashback.
"Alright Fennekin, use Ember!" Skylar exclaimed before a jet of flame suddenly struck a pokemon that resembled a bipedal rabbit.
"Bunnelby!" It cried as it was knocked down.
With a glint in his eye the teen grabbed a ball at his belt before suddenly throwing it at the pokemon. It made contact and suddenly opened before consuming the bunny pokemon in a blast of red light. Then the light returned to the ball and it closed before falling to the ground.
The fight had been fierce however Fennekin, under the guidance of its trainer was able to quickly shift the tides of the battle into its favor. The duo were both feeling adrenaline from it as they watched the ball shake, the button on the front flashing before suddenly it stopped, it was over.
"YES!" Skylar yelled as he leapt up in the air and punched upwards.
Fennekin also cried out before suddenly leapt up into his arms. The two embraced and both shared laughter, their first catch had been made. As he walked over and picked up the ball Skylar decided it would be the first of many, many captures.
Flashback end.
And so it had, he'd captured a Fletchling, a Metapod, a Pidgey, a Scatterbug, a Burmy and even the three elemental monkeys Pansage, Panpour and Pansear. No matter how many times he successfully captured a pokemon the thrill didn't go away.
Watching the ball shake and watching the button flicker was incredibly suspenseful, but it triggered something within him, something foreign, something new and exciting. It made his heart beat faster and filled him with something he'd never felt.
"Heh, you're right, let's go!" Tyler replied before pointing towards him with one hand while putting the other on his hip and seemingly becoming some kind of sea captain.
"Yeah." Kaila added in a less dramatic way before the group set off once more.
However in the midst of this Tyler noticed a flyer pinned to the side of a building, walking over to it he pulled it off and surveyed it with interest.
"Are your pokemon in perfect synch? Do you live and breathe co-operation? Are you a totally terrifying tag team tandem? If you answered yes to any of the above enter the annual Santalune Tag Team Tournament!" The comical trainer read from the flyer.
"Sounds fun." Skylar replied with a contemplative look on his face.
"Let's not get ahead of ourselves, the last time we listened to a flyer it turned out to be an elaborate ruse by an incompetent group of criminals." Kaila replied cynically while Pikachu folded its arms and added in a cry of its own name to agree.
"Yeah, but this one would be too stupid for anybody to do, as in who invites people to bring their strongest pokemon?" Skylar asked.
"He's got a point." The older male replied.
"I guess." Kaila admitted.
"Anyway, it says here it's gonna be divided into divisions, zero badges, that's you guys, the newbies." He explained which caused a cry of protest from the two.
"One to two badges, three to five badges, five to seven badges and then the open division." Tyler finished.
"Open division?" Skylar asked curiously.
"It's people who have eight gym badges or more." Tyler replied.
"More?! But there are only eight gyms in Kalos!" Kaila protested.
"I'm talking about the real pros. As in those with all the gym badges of multiple regions, the champions or ex-champs, Elite Four members maybe even a gym leader or two." The older male explained.
"So wait, do we have to enter in duos?" Kaila asked.
"Nope, according to this it's for one trainer and they use two pokemon, it's to test how well a trainer' spoke on connect and how well a trainer understands their own pokemon." Tyler replied.
"Well, this could be a lot of fun. But we'd need to get our pokemon used to working in duos,,devising a good strategy is another thing we should do." Skylar added before trailing off at the end.
His mind was abuzz with different ways he could get his pokemon to work together well and compliment their abilities, but he wanted to test his ideas and train his pokemon to use these strategies. But first they needed to train.
"Alright guys, let's go." He stated before setting off once more.
2 hours later
"Alright, Roselia, prepare a Stun Spore, Fennkin, force Bidoof into a position where Roselia can hit it!" Skylar yelled.
The bipedal flower raised the blue petal on its arm an took aim while the fox fired a jet of flame to the side of the brown beaver pokemon that forced it to leap to the side, only to be hit by yellow pores that stunned the creature.
"Okay Fennekin, hit it with a Flame Charge!" Skylar exclaimed as the fox ran towards the beaver, its body becoming cloaked in flames, it was ready to strike and knock out the opposition.
"Alright, Roselia, hit it with a Mega Drain for maximum damage!" The trainer commanded as a green beam was fired from Roselia's red flower which struck the Bidoof after Fennekin's Flame Charge had struck which sent it flying.
This left only the two pokemon of Skylar's standing, overlooking their defeated opponent with a sense of satisfaction.
"So how was that?" Skylar asked curiously.
"Not bad." Tyler replied.
He'd been doing his own training for quite a while, working with his own pokemon for the same competition, but he'd offered to lend his experience to the younger trainer for a while as they wouldn't be in the same division. He'd watched the battle with a scrutinizing eye and was ready to voice his thoughts,
"Hmm, that first half of the combo had potential but Mega Drain isn't the best complement to Flame Charge. In my experience physical attacks aren't the best with special attacks, you should rely instead on the power of the attack and use a long range attack to cover for it." Tyler critiqued.
"Alright, I was just trying to boost attack power to knock down a stronger pokemon." The other teen replied.
"Well, maybe you should combine Ember and Mega Drain, they'll lose strength and get hit by two attacks while Roselia gets strength back." Tyler suggested.
"Actually, I'll try that, Roselia, Fennekin, you heard the man, Ember and Mega Drain on that tree!" Skylar commanded.
The two pokemon nodded before the flower pokemon raised her red flower and Fennekin opened its mouth before Skylar cried out and the two fired their attacks. However the flames were fired too rapidly while the green beam lagged behind. The flames struck the tree but did little damage due to the fact that the tree was living and flames wouldn't combust unless the wood was dead and the beam did nothing against the tree alone.
"Um, maybe we should try that again..." Skylar suggested.
"Your pokemon aren't in synch." Tyler replied.
"What?" Skylar asked.
"You know your pokemon well, but double battles require not only you to know, but your pokemon themselves to know each other. They need to know each other's strengths and weaknesses, where they need to compensate, where they need to cover for the other. But most importantly they need to be able to think as one." The older male explained.
"Any suggestions?" The younger trainer asked.
The smile that came across the face of Tyler scared the younger trainer slightly and he began to have second thoughts about accepting his advice. But he knew that it would most likely be beneficial and as such he decided to just wait and see what it was.
"Oh, plenty." The older teen explained with a sadistic smirk on his face.
Skylar and his pokemon gulped.
Meanwhile.
"Alright Elekid, Pikachu, both use Quick Attack on Bunnelby!" Kaila commanded.
Suddenly both the small electric types shot forwards with rapid speed and struck the bunny pokemon. They continued to leap around and deliver damage from various angles, Pikachu inflicted damage on the right only to be followed by Elekid on the left. However quite quickly the two collided midair and landed in a heap nearby.
By this point the small bunny had managed to stand up once more however it was quickly beaten down by dual Thundershocks. However this wasn't enough to satisfy Kaila who sat down and contemplated why her pokemom hadn't been able to cooperate successfully.
This wasn't the first time they'd attempted the move yet each time her two electric types ended up colliding with each other or getting in the other's way every time they attempted a combination attack.
Suddenly she heard maniacal laughter coming from nearby and decided to investigate the source of it. What she saw caused her to fall back in utter shock and collapse on the ground.
Skylar and his two pokemon were all wearing dresses of various lengths, styles and colors and all looking around in a concerned manner. Yup, definitely therapy.
"So how does is help our teamwork?" Skylar asked while looking around in order to make sure nobody was coming.
"It doesn't it just amuses me!" Tyler replied cackling.
"Right..." The younger trainer replied, still looking around worriedly.
"Well can I take it off now?" He promptly asked.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever." Tyler replied as he looked through his phone with a wicked grin on his face.
"This vid is so gonna go viral on Mewtube..." He murmured to himself which caused Skyalr to groan before he walked over to a group of bushes.
Thankfully he changed behind the greenery and Kaila didn't end up needing another few years of therapy in her adult life. Eventually the teen was back in his original outfit, this time a loose blue t-shirt with orange text proclaiming 'That awkward moment when a t-shirt doesn't end the way you Octillery' as well as a pair of black cargo pants and sneakers.
"Now, it's time for the real training to begin." Tyler explained, deadly serious.
Skylar grinned as the boy suddenly pulled a pokeball from his belt and held it out, not a hint of mirth or amusement in his eyes.
"Now, your goal is simple. Your two pokemon have to try and land a hit on my one, they won't be able to accomplish it unless they can work in synch. Now go." The older trainer explained before he suddenly hurled his pokeball up h the air before a blue, bipedal pokemon appeared.
Tyler had sent out Lucario, this was going to be interesting indeed.
"Alright, let's do this!" Skylar replied as his two pokemon prepared themselves.
Meanwhile Kaila watched from the bushes bemusedly, the older trainer seemed to he overestimating himself, how hard could it be to land one hit on the Anubis like pokemon?
1 hour later
Evidently quite hard indeed.
The entire area was a wreck from the attacks that had been hurled at the powerful pokemon, yet not one had managed to connect or even come close for that matter.
"You're gonna have to do better than that if you want to win!" Tyler taunted with a mocking grin on his face.
"Ugh, let's try something different. Fennekin, get in close with a Flame Charge, Roselia, use Mega Drain to cover him!" Skylar commanded.
"Ha, you'll have to do better than that, Lucario, dodge to the right side and evade both attacks!" The older teen countered.
As the flaming Fennekin got close Lucario was able to leap to the side before backsault ing out of the way of the grass attack designed to sap strength.
"Now, Fennekin, Ember, Roselia, Poison Sting!" The younger trainer exclaimed as suddenly the flames around Fnnekin dissipated and Roselia's attack ceased.
Tyler's eyebrow raised as suddenly the fox like pokemon fired a jet of flame and the bipedal flower fired purple stingers of energy at the pokemon. At this point Lucario was still in the midst of its aerial acrobatics.
"Lucario, you know what to do." The older trainer explained as his pokemon nodded whilst in mid air.
The two attacks flew towards the bipedal pokemon and edged closer and closer, yet Lucario's flip continued. It seemed as if Skylar's pokemon were going to be successful when the pokemon's foot touched the ground and it instantly vanished in a blur, the two attacks rendered useless.
"Heh, Extremespeed, an incredibly useful move." Tyler explained as Lucario suddenly appeared directly in front of him, arms crossed.
"N-no way..." Skylar murmured as he actually fell to his knees.
"But not bad." Tyler complimented him.
"Damnit, we nearly had him!" The younger teen yelled.
"Hey now, no need to get so mopey, I never anticipated for you to hit Lucario, or even get that close for that matter. Seems I underestimated you." The older male explained.
At this Skylar grinned, perhaps it wasn't so bad after all, he'd come very close to hitting a pokemon of Lucario's calibre, that was pretty good!
"Of course, if I had've been fighting offensively, you'd be done." Tyler informed him, causing Skylar's mouth to drop open.
"I could've used Extremespeed to take out Roselia, your long range attacker, and then Fennekin would've been easy pickings. Aura can outmaneuver Fennekin with ease and I've got various attacks with the power to take him down." The older trainer explained, deadly serious. That was certainly disconcerting to the young trainer.
"You're right." Skylar conceded before sighing, it didn't seem like the training had been a success after all.
He'd come close to striking the fighting type down, but Tyler and Aura hadn't used their full power to battle them. Perhaps the two pokemon just wouldn't be able to work together.
"Not only that, but you forgot that Aura's a steel type. Fire type attacks would've been effective but he's immune to poison." Tyler explained which caused Skylar to groan.
He'd forgotten something painfully obvious, simple type match ups. He'd been too focused on hitting his opponent to think about the basics of pokemon battling.
"But hey, not everybody can be as dashing, intelligent, amazing and talented as I am." The older trainer comforted Skylar while shrugging nonchalantly.
"Tyler?"
"Yes my far less dashing, intelligent, amazing and talented friend?"
"I hate you."
"Although it pains me to hear you say such things I understand your jealousy at my dashing, intelligent, amazing and talented being."
Skylar just shook his head hopelessly, his friend may have been a great trainer but he was a total idiot. Suddenly Skylar realized something, exactly how he would land that hit.
"Yup, you're right. You truly are dashing, intelligent, amazing and talented!" Skylar exclaimed causing every human and pokemon present to look at him in utter shock.
"C-come again?" Tyler asked, barely coherent.
"Yup, and I'd like to tell me about how you became as dashing, intelligent, amazing and talented as you are and every detail of your experiences." The younger trainer continued with wide eyes full of wonder.
"Well, legends like me aren't born, they're made. And I suppose. I've just always been dashing, intelligent, amazing and talented." Tyler explained bouncing back like a champ.
He continued to ramble away, using boisterous hand movements to demonstrate points and borderline ridiculous amounts of expression in his voice. He went on to tell tales of how he'd defeated an Ursaring with his bare hands at the age of two and then proceeded to be raised by Mighteyanas.
As he was going on Skylar turned to his pokemon and then up at Lucario who had his face buried in one of his hands in utter shame. Nodding satisfactorily the teen once more turned to his pokemon.
"Fennekin, Ember, Roselia, Mega Drain." He whispered and his two pokemon nodded before suddenly a jet of flame flew forwards and a green beam of energy accompanied it.
As neither Aura nor Tyler were paying the battle any attention the Lucario was struck with both attacks and stumbled back slightly.
"N-no way!" Tyler cried as he looked on in utter shock.
"I did it!" Skylar cried happily.
"Hey, I was distracted!" The older boy roared in response.
"And I made sure you were." The victorious trainer replied.
It was at this point that realization appeared on Tyler's face, he'd been played like a Pokeflute. And by the very person he was trying to teach pokemon battling to, the irony was intense.
"Yes, I suppose you did win." Tyler began which caused Skylar to laugh.
"However." He continued which caused the younger boy to stop.
"Pokemon battling isn't about deceiving your opponent or using circumstances outside of the battle to take advantage of them and win. There's a fine line between being a tricky pokemon battler, and being a cheater." Tyler explained which caused the younger trainer to pale.
Suddenly Skylar wasn't so proud of his victory, it felt almost like he'd cheated to achieve it, which he had. And that was the worst part of it all. He'd deceived a friend and tricked him and his pokemon into getting hit.
"That being said it was a decent strategy. You took advantage of my personality and found a way to defeat a much more experienced pokemon. If a person doesn't pay attention in a battle it's their own fault if they lose. However, I don't want to see you pull anything like this again. Understood?" Tyler began calmly before roaring the last word.
"Sir yes sir!" Skylar replied instinctively as he raised a hand to his forehead in a salute before realizing what he'd done.
Tyler burst out laughing.
1 hour later
The two teens emerged from the forest looking battered and bruised beyond belief. Upon leaving they both looked up at the sky in wonder.
"Light, I thought I'd never see it again!" Tyler melodramatically called to the heavens.
"You moron, if you hadn't have made me take that right back near that tree we'd have been fine!" Skylar roared.
"My fault?! I only took that right because we needed to get back to where we started, and the onto reason that needed to happen was because you knew 'a shortcut' that ended up taking three times as long since you got us lost!" Tyler roared back.
"It would've been a shortcut if not for that right, well, I could've compensated there, but you proceeded to walk east, south, west and then north to east again, you took us in a friggin square eight times!" Skylar roared right back.
"Oh, hey guys." Kaila happily greeted them, having walked down the route to greet the two of them.
"Uh, hey Kaila." Skylar replied.
"Uh, great to see ya." Tyler added.
"Anyway, while you guys were playing dress up I went off and did some training." She explained which caused the younger teen to blush.
Had she really seen that? That was bad. However it was all Tyler's fault of course, but as much if an idiot as he was he was still a good guy.
"Oh, that reminds me." The older male piped up and pulled out a phone before checking it.
"Ha, 550,000 views already on Mewtube. I'm well on my way to uploading my first viral video." He explained.
On second thoughts Tyler was the devil in human form.
"Oh yeah, I also did this." Kaila added as she suddenly pulled out a small item that Skylar recognized all too well.
"That's the Santalune City Gym badge!" He yelled indignantly.
"Hey, good work Kaila. Now we're Santalune City Gym buddies." Tyler added with a wink.
"I feel dirty somehow." Kaila replied.
Suddenly Skylar realized what that meant. He was the only one in the group without that gym badge, or more specifically, a gym badge. He suddenly had visions of himself at the Pokemon League, cheering on his two friends like some kind of moron. If that ever happened he'd never battle and exist only to provide moral support to people...that couldn't happen!
"Alright, looks like I'm challenging the gym then!" Skylar exclaimed.
"Unfortunately Viola decided to go out on a break." Kaila explained which caused the younger trainer to groan.
"Haha. No need to worry my good friend." Tyler comforted him.
Skylar nodded, things could be worse, he could still get a badge, and he was hungry anyway. Besides, challenging a gym with pokemon that are tired is generally ill advised at the best of times.
"Think about everything that you could do as a supporting character." Tyler added causing both Skylar and Kaila to look at him in shock.
Suddenly the sky turned black and the earth began to rumble, Tyler looked around in fear before he promptly wet himself.
"What on earth?" Tyler asked before suddenly clutching his throat.
"I seem to have been a dandy gentleman." Tyler explained in utter shock.
"HA!" A voice boomed before suddenly everything reverted to the way it was.
"What just happened?" Tyler asked, having reverted to normal.
"I don't know, and I don't know how I got this phone. But this is going on Mewtube." The younger male jovially laughed as he uploaded the footage of Tyler wetting himself onto the internet for all to see.
"Look guys, I've had enough of this stuff. Let's go get some lunch." Kaila suggested as he suddenly grabbed Tyler who looked utterly morbid and stood with his mouth handing open and his eyes free of pupils.
"Yeah, I am pretty hungry." Skylar replied as the trio set off towards the city known as Santalune.
Finally the trio were walking (or in Tyler's case being dragged) around the city. It was a bustling place, full of people who were going about their daily business. However it didn't seem clinical or devoid of life. Looking around they appreciated at how the city hadn't allowed itself to be consumed by its status.
The city was clean and almost quirky in a way. Small benches with odd flourishes in the design such as flowers handing from each end. The Roselia fountain was another such feature and people seemed quite polite. They would wait for others to pass before proceeding themselves and then head off after receiving a warm thank you from the person they'd allowed to pass.
And there were flowers hanging from many windows, wonderful bouquets of roses and violets and countless other colors. The city truly was a nice place to spend time. Perhaps that was why Skylar and his friends had yet to make it out of the city despite the amount of time they'd spent in it and the amount of adventures they'd had. However once the tag team tournament was over and Skylar had his gym badge they would likely leave.
Was that what a pokemon journey was about? Experiencing everything a city had to offer and meeting new people? After all, if every city held this many experiences it would be a long journey indeed. But he was ready for it.
"So what do you want for lunch?" Kaila asked suddenly breaking the younger teen from his stupor.
"Oh, I don't know. You choose." Skylar replied.
It was at this exact moment that Tyler woke from his own affliction in order to leap up suddenly and grin that stupid grin of his.
"Oh, you two are the cutest couple!" He exclaimed with his hands clasped at the side of his face as he lent his face on them.
"Shut up Tyler."
A/N: Oh I'm so glad that's over. I started writing this and then about 1,537 words in I lost motivation. I'd already somewhat lost interest in pokemon (remind me never to do such a quick update again, ever) and I doubted the future of this Fic.
But then Aurastorm asked if my chapter was done and as so here it is ;)
Anyway, I'll be getting back into writing this. It was just nice to have a small break and read some other fanfictions that are out there, get an idea for some different writing styles. Learn a thing or two about fanfiction in general.
Oh and by the way, as Tyler will tell you, never break the Fourth Wall Or you'll wet yourself and become a dapper british gent. And go viral.
Anyway that was longer than expected and I'm still going. So bye!
