Chapter 4
Disclaimer: I do not own any of the characters in this story. They belong to Uncle Rick.
Leo Valdez woke up in his bed for a change. He didn't have any nightmares last night, which surprised him. Instead Ogygia had filled his mind. That didn't surprise him.
He had a dream last night where he was on her island. He couldn't move or say anything. But he could hear. He could feel. He could smell. He could see. The sound of waves colliding with the shore filled his ears. The calls of birds surrounded him and the soft whisper of the trees. The grass tickled his ankle and the cool wind blew, but he did not shiver. The smell of salt water filled his nose, mixing with that of all the plants around him. The bright colour of everything overwhelmed him.
The sight of Ogygia in all filled him with joy. He couldn't believe he was back. It was just as he remembered it, beautiful. But one thing was missing.
Then he heard it, smelled it, felt it, saw it. He heard the sound of her voice. Her beautiful, beautiful voice. Oh how he had longed to hear it for days. He smelled the slight scent cinnamon reached him and he basked in its glory. Cinnamon had never smelled so good before. He felt her presence. She was nearby somewhere, he knew. He just needed to find her, needed to see her again, needed to refresh his memory so he would never, never forget her.
Then suddenly, he heard it.
"...Leo Valdez..."
It was her voice. Saying his name! He tried moving again, needing to follow the sound. This time, it worked and Leo started running down the beach until he saw her.
White shirt. Blue jeans. Loosely braided hair. It was what he had been longing to see for days.
Calypso.
She was holding up a piece of paper in palms, to the sky.
"...Hephaestus..."
Leo hear what sounded like his dad's name. Wait, was she trying to communicate with his father?
Wait. Was she trying to communicate with him?
"No, impossible." Leo shook his head and mumbled to himself. "Don't get your hopes up. No contact with outside mortal world for her... Except the occasional from Hephaestus and Hermes... My father and the god of sending stuff..." His spirits started rising again.
"Maybe, she is try to write to me!" His sudden excitement woke him up.
At first he was disappointed. It had all been a dream, she wasn't really writing to him. Was she?
No, she couldn't have been. And even if she was how would it get to him? He shook his head, trying to forget about the dream, not wanting to have too many false hopes.
But he couldn't. He couldn't forget about Calypso. Not in a million years. She wasn't like all the other girls he had liked before. Compared to her, they all seemed like foolish ideas of "love." Because this time it felt real.
With Calypso, he felt at ease. Around pretty much every other female he was usually maybe a tiny bit uncomfortable or something. Other than Piper, Hazel, and Annabeth that is, but sometimes even with them.
But being with Calypso felt different. And after much thought he decided it was a good kind of different. Working with her, he realized, reminded him of working with... with his mom.
Calypso was special. And he decide that morning that he would never give up on finding her.
Throughout the day Leo was running around his ship, repairing things, talking to Festus, and fiddling with his sphere. For most of the day he had managed to put the dream aside, but Calypso still wandered back into his mind.
It was after dinner and he was looking out at the water, leaning on the rail. The smell of salt reminded him of the island. Which reminded him of her. He closed his eyes and breathed it in, imagining he was back on Ogygia. Taking a deep breath he opened his eyes and looked back out.
Then he quickly did a double take and rubbed his eyes.
No, it can't be. It's just a coincidence... It's not real... I'm just imagining it...
But he wasn't. In the distance, there was a piece of paper floating in the wind, that was slowly and swiftly coming nearer and nearer to the ship.
When it was close enough to touch, Leo held out his hand, nervously, expecting it to be a joke. But curiosity got the best of him and his hand grabbed it out the air.
It was a neat scroll all nicely rolled up. Carefully, he unrolled it and his eyes immediately fell to the bottom and his eyes widened.
It wasn't a dream he had seen, it had actually happened. Because there on the paper, clear as day, was a single signature at the bottom of the letter.
Calypso.
