Chapter Three:
Let me tell you about Pandora...
KID POV
Kaito stared out the window, the clouds looking rather dark in the setting sun. They had been flying for a couple hours now, with several more hours to go before they reached their destination. He had been on many flights during his time as Kaitou Kid, but this was one of the first he had ever really done as himself, Kaito Kuroba. The thought of no longer being Kid made him both happy and sad for a number of different reasons, but he wouldn't go back on his word. He had sworn to his father, his mother, Jii, Shinara, and even Hakuba, that once he found Pandora, once he destroyed it, Kid would vanish from the face of the world. He didn't want anyone else taking up the mantle, especially not his own children. He wanted to support his love with all he could…that was why he chose to become a law major and that was why he was here now, following this lead that may or may not end up being a wild goose chase. What if it was? What if it wasn't Pandora that he found at the end of the line? What would he do? Continue being kid, searching for the rest of his life? If that's what it took…then yeah, he would. He wanted, no, he needed Pandora to be gone, so that something like what happened to his father, would never happen again.
Gentle fingers brushed through his hair from where he leaned against the window. He knew it was Shinara. He could see her in the reflection of the window. Her black hair, streaked with silver lining. Her eyes, surrounded by a moonlike halo. His angelic dove, as he liked to consider her. The thought made him smile as he turned his head to look at her. He could see it, in her eyes, in her movements…she loved him. How he had gotten so lucky to have her all for himself, he didn't know, but he desired her, as much as he desired anything. She was his everything, his entire reason for living each day, his reason for continuing his search, and his reason for keeping his promise. She was his life, his whole heart. He loved her.
Reaching a gentle hand to her face, he gently caressed her cheek, tracing her lips and her jaw line with his finger. The softness of the skin felt so inviting and before he knew what he was doing, he had pressed his lips to her own. She didn't pull away as he thought she would, considering their location, but instead she deepened the kiss until finally she gently pressed on his chest, telling him enough was enough. He smiled as she playfully glared at him, her own smile unable to resist appearing as he stared into her eyes, captivated by the beautiful blue and silver he saw there. She similarly was struck as his indigo eyes peered into her own, looking as though they could reach into her soul.
"I love you Shinara", he whispered as he closed his eyes and pressed his forehead against her own.
She squeezed his hand soothingly and closed her own eyes, just enjoying his presence. She could tell something was bothering him, but she didn't ask him. If he wanted her to know, he would tell her. She trusted him completely and she knew he felt the same about her.
"Can I tell you the legend of Pandora?" he asked her all at once.
She opened her eyes and stared into his for a moment before giving a small nod. He had told her a little about the jewel, but just the bare basics. The fact that he wanted to talk about it now told her this little excursion out of the country was bothering him a bit. It was rare to see Kaito disturbed by anything enough to be as quiet as he had been lately, though she knew this entire trip was personal for him.
"Pandora, the legend begins with a woman. A woman and a box of hidden desires…" he continued to tell her, the legend of the woman who opened the box, releasing into the world the horrors known today as the seven deadly sins, the plagues, and the apocalypse. He told her of the woman who cried tears of blood as she closed the box, leaving one last thing inside, the promise of hope. That hope crystalized in the blood and turned into a jewel, a jewel that would grant the finder immortality on the night of a full moon, should he wish for it. He told her of its great power and how so many before, had tried to use it for their personal gain.
"She speaks, they say. She tells them their soul's desire and she will grant it, should they be willing to give away their greatest possession." He told her of those who had tried before to take the power, but ended in failure as the jewel rejected them and their offers. He told her of the chosen, the ones the jewel considers worthy, those who she grants a single wish. He then told her of his plan to destroy the jewel, to never allow such power to remain in the world unaccounted for.
"This sort of thing", he stated, "it is nothing but an abomination, as it drives men to madness."
'Then we shall stop the madness", Shinara replied as she placed her hands over his, "You will stop the madness."
He smiled at her, a gentle, loving smile that melted her heart and she knew deep down, he would be okay, no matter what happened in the end. So long as that smile remained, they would both be okay.
A sudden rocking of the plane startled them out of their peace. They noticed several of the stewardesses rushing to and fro, somewhat in a nervous panic that only a detective and a thief would be able to pick up on.
"Excuse me", said Kaito grabbing ones attention, "is something happening?"
She stared at him a moment, her lip being chewed as she seemed to be thinking over how to reply.
"There is a storm", said another stewardess that appeared at the younger girls side, "nothing for you to worry about right now. It's just not something any pilot or flight attendant likes to be in when flying."
"Alright, thank you", he replied as they nodded and shuffled off to whatever it was they were doing.
He watched them for a moment, his hand still grasping Shinaras as the plane shook again, hard enough that Harley who had fallen asleep about an hour ago startled awake.
"What's going on?" she asked yawning, her arms stretching above her head as she wearily looked around.
"Storm outside", he replied, "It's causing a little turbulence."
"This is more than a little", replied Hakuba from in front of them.
"I hate turbulence", muttered Aoko, "it makes me feel like we are going to crash any moment."
"It's normal on a plane ride", said Hakuba with a smile, his own hand taking Aokos as he rubbed his thumb soothingly over her hand, "Nothing to worry about, I'm sure."
Kaito didn't respond. Something about the stewardesses' anxiety bothered him. Someone who has a job on a plane wouldn't be so nervous if they thought it was nothing. Something was going on.
Lightning flashed outside the window, catching everyone's eye. The lightning wasn't just caused by the heat, it was streaking through the sky like an angry snake trying to strike its prey. This wasn't a normal storm, he realized, no doubt, this was a cyclonic storm.
A hurricane.
