- Mary's P.O.V. -

'Friends? Why does Alex want to be friends? Is it to try and get back at me for something I did? This is going to bother me for a while. Stupid Alex. Stupid brain.'

I think as I lay in bed wondering and worrying over what went down outside with Alex last night. I roll over and look at the clock.

5:00 am

I sigh.

'Great. I haven't got a lick of sleep tonight. Well since I'm not going to get any sleep tonight. Let's go for a run.'

I get out of bed and walk to the closet. I pull out a cutoff, shorts, socks, and running shoes. I quickly change and grab my watch, iPod, and phone. I walk out of my room to find mom sitting on the couch watching the news.

"Dear, what are you doing up so early? Is everything alright?"

She asks me, giving me a worried look.

"I can't sleep so I'm going to go run. Be back later."

I tell her as I walk pass the couch. I open the door and walk out. I put my headphones on and turn the music up as I walk outside to the track. When I get to the track, I do some quick stretches and then begin to run. I love running because I can just block out everything and forget life for a few minutes.

- Alex's P.O.V. -

I wake up suddenly from a very pleasant dream about Mary. I look around sleepy at the noise coming from the man at the barracks door.

"Wakey wakey turds! Time for training!"

Payne yells and I groan. I lay back down and put a pillow over my head. I slowly drift back to sleep when my pillow get ripped from my hands. I groan.

"Seriously."

I mumble, turning around in my cot.

"Turd, you better get up and ready for today's training or your fellow turds will suffer with you."

Payne says loudly in my ear.

"Whatever."

"Okay turds because Cadet Stone thinks he can do whatever he wants, you all get extra and longer workouts. Hurry up turds! I want you dressed and ready in 0.08 hours."

He yells and walks out of the barracks. The boys groan and yell at me. I sigh and get up.

"Okay ladies! You heard Major Payne, he wants us ready and out there in five minutes. Let's move it!"

Dotson yells, clapping his hands together. Some of the boys groan and others tell him to shut up as they get ready for today's training. I groan and slowly get out of bed.

- Mary's P.O.V. -

I look out the window to see Alex and the cadets running and do drills. They looked miserable but at least it's not raining today. I look away from the window and back to the teacher.

"Hey... Hey... Mary... Bitch..."

I hear someone whisper at me. I look around and find Katie looking at me from her seat, two seats in front of me.

"What?"

"I need to tell you something important after class."

She whispers and I nod my head. I look back out the window to find some of the cadets doing push ups or sit ups. The other cadets are running laps on the track. Payne looks to be standing in the middle of track, yelling at the cadets. I jump in my seat as the bell rings. I stand up and walk out of the classroom. Katie jumps in front of me.

"So guess what I found out?"

She asks as we begin to walk out to the front lawn.

"What?"

"Alex hasn't told you?"

I look over at her confused.

"No. What did you find out?"

"The cadets are going to be competing in the Virginian Military Games in eight weeks."

"Oh really? I'll be right back."

I say as we walk out of the building and I walk off towards the track.
