Chapter 6
Cole's P.O.V
I watched the steady rise and fall of her chest intently in the hope that she would wake. I had no idea what had gone on in the bathroom hours ago but it didn't sound good at all. I could only sit here and hope that she was going to be alright.
Suddenly her body began jerking violently again. I got up in a panic and rushed to her side. I grabbed her limbs trying to hold her down. Suddenly her eyes shot open and she sat up on the bed.
"Are you ok?" I asked her.
"Yeah, I'm fine" she replied rubbing her eyes.
"You have a lot of explaining to do now".
"Would you believe me if I told you it was just a seizure?" she smiled weakly.
I laughed softly, "Nice try. I'm going to get Sam over here and you can tell us both".
I quickly ran next door and banged loudly on the door. Sam opened the door and when he saw me he knew why I was there and followed me back to Belle's house.
Sam stood next to Belle who was still sitting on her bed and said, "Alright, time to tell us what's going on".
Belle looked up at us and took a deep breath. "I-I'm a wolf" she said softly.
"I knew it!" I exclaimed. Sam glared at me, "I mean, we had our suspicious. But how did you become a wolf?"
She paused for a moment before saying, "Well it happened when I was 10. I was on a hike with my classmates through Willow's Creek woods. I stopped to look at a flower and got separated from the group. I started panicking and calling out for my friends but that alerted the wolves. Before I knew it, the pack had surrounded me. I tried to run but the leader jumped onto me. And I think you guys know the rest."
"But what happened when you first shifted? What did your parents do?" Sam asked.
She looked at Sam with a sad look on her face, "I don't have any parents. I'm an orphan. They kicked me out of the orphanage when I shifted and handed me over to scientist to have them experiment on me. I went through months of painful tests before I managed to escape. I heard there was a pack of wolves here so I decided to come here"
"I'm so sorry" I replied putting my arm around her. She began sobbing and pulled me closer into a hug. I was trying to be comforting but I was too busy enjoying the fact that she was hugging me. Damn these hormones.
Sam spoke and Belle stopped crying and looked up, "So what on Earth happened in that bathroom?"
She spoke with an unsteady voice, "Well to be honest I don't really know. That's why I wanted that book".
Sam considered this for a moment, "But why didn't you shift?"
"Well ummm.. I kinda…..I can kind of control when I shift" she stammered nervously. We were both silent and then she continued "I mean I just think really hard not shifting and I don't shift. It works the other way around too. I've always been able to do this and I have no idea why. I was hoping that book would be able to tell me".
Woah, this was a lot of information to take in. I looked over at Sam and he was absolutely gobsmacked. I wished I had a camera because that would make a great screen saver. I grinned a little at this thought before realising that it probably wasn't an appropriate reaction to this information.
The silence was killing me so I decided to break it, "But how? I didn't think that was even possible?!"
She laughed nervously and shrugged, "well apparently it is".
Sam looked intently at her, "this is incredible! Imagine if we could figure out how you do this!" He paused and looked down and spoke softly as though just to himself, "I could get Grace back". I felt the pain in those words. He's really been missing Grace since she shifted. I felt sorry for the guy to be honest.
"Where's that book then?" Sam asked, snapping back into reality.
"It's under the couch" Belle replied. I dashed out of the room and through the hall until I was in the living room. It was a pretty nice place. Oh wait, I'm supposed to be grabbing the book, not admiring Belle's house. I went to the couch and reached under until I felt the book. I picked it up and ran back into the bedroom. I handed the book to Belle.
She flicked through the pages until she reached to a chapter near the end of the book and said, "I think this is the chapter. It's called special cases".
She handed the book to Sam and he began to read aloud, "Over the years, there have been known to be some cases in which a werewolf is able to control the shifts. It has been found that the main reason that this is possible is if the person is born a werewolf".
Sam and I looked at each other in disbelief. This was crazy.
Belle shook her head and cried, "no no no no no. This isn't possible"
I rubbed her back softly, trying to comfort her. "Well I mean, it is possible. You never met you parents, right?"
"Yeah" she sobbed.
"Well what if one of them was a wolf and you were therefore born a wolf and that's why you have this ability?" Tears ran down her face as she considered this. It all seemed to make sense in my head so I thought she would be the same.
But then she spoke, "But those wolves attacked me. I never shifted until after that".
"What if that just let loose the wolf inside of you?" I said fairly proud of myself for coming up with that explanation. I then noticed that Sam was being awfully quiet. I looked over at him and saw that he was intently reading through the book. I stopped rubbing Belle's back and tapped him on the shoulder, "Earth to Ringo".
He looked up as though he had been on another planet and had just come back to this one. "That all seems quite possible. Now the only question is, how?"
