School, why did you have to be so cruel and give so much homeworks? I have a fanfic to finish.
Oh my gosh, guys I can't believe we made it to the final chapter! It's been an awesome three years (yes it's been three years). Your support is what motivates me to finish this. I thought I would never finish it. Anyways, for you guys asking why Dipper forgives Rosie in the past chapters real quick, that is actually my fault. I made it rushed. Dipper was supposed to call her a 'murderer' and is angry with her but I'm planning to not make the chapter too long. I should've focus the quality.
This chapter is the longest that I've written. 10,000 words! Can you believe that?
On to the story!
Rainboom345: Thanks for being there for me, bestie! I'm afraid I couldn't answer that. Find it out on your own ;)
"Alright, gang! We have a very important competition to win in less than two weeks," Mabel said, raising her voice with a tone used for the soldier army. "I've chosen the perfect song to sing at the competition. It'll blow their minds off!"
Dipper squinted his eyes at the music sheet his sister handed minutes ago. "But Mabel, this is a really tough song for you. We're fine with the instrumental but the singing will eventually damage your vocal cord if you raised the notes really high and maintain that."
Mabel waved it off dismissively. "It's alright, bro-bro. I got this. I've been singing in the attic all night!"
"So that's what made the wolves howl in perfect harmony." Soos pursed his lips, nodding in suspicion. Rosie cut in. "You sure about this?" The girl was a bit worried about Mabel as well. She plays an important role in the band. They can't take the risk that will definitely forfeited the band competing.
Mabel snorted. "What, I thought you guys have faith in me! What happened?"
"Nothing, we're just," Wendy paused, slumping her shoulders, "worried about you. That's all. If you can't sing, we can't compete. Have you told Pacifica we're entering?"
The brunette dipped her head. "Yup. She said she'll get back to me after she filled up some documents. She told me that they are so many tough and talented bands competing, and there's even those from outside the town!"
"Why am I not surprised?" Dipper said, folding his arms across his chest and leaned against a wall. "This is going to be a tough challenge."
Mabel's gaze didn't waver and her spirits weren't sinking upon hearing this. She had high hopes that the band can win this annual competition. "Look on the bright side! We can win this!" She glanced at her glittery watch. "Oh snap! Guys, we're late for Heather's funeral! C'mon!"
The gang exited the shack and began to went inside Soos's pickup truck. The vehicle drove off to the Gravity Falls Cemetery where they attend Heather's funeral. Most of the students from school were there, even students who were bullied horribly by Heather herself. Some teachers attend as well and they all wore black clothing to show their mourning and grief to the young teen.
Mabel also saw Stephanie, Chloe and Brianna. They were all grieving and Dipper had told them the poison he found during his investigation of her death. They were glad that they know what caused it and thanked the gang profusely. Mabel knew what they found was wrong but she knew that it's better to keep her mouth shut about it.
A tall man, presumably around his 30s, had a grieving look on his face. "Heather was a very kind girl. She always make me safe and she always try her hardest to make me feel proud of her. I couldn't ask more of a better daughter." He burst into a sob and Mabel looked down, tears began to crawl out from her eyes. Ever since she played soccer, she could glimpse a good side within Heather. The sophomore can be cruelly mean but when she's in a good mood, she's the nicest person Mabel ever met. And she knew she couldn't do anything. That's water under the bridge now.
After hearing the emotional words from Heather's father, plus burying the coffin, The Mystery Band was asked to perform a song for Heather's early death at a young age.
Mabel discovered the perfect and proper song for the funeral when she was trawling in a certain website called YouTube. The song was called If I Die Young by The Band Perry. It fits perfectly due to Heather dying at a young age. Especially the heart-wrenching line, 'Funny when you're dead how people started listening'.
Mabel sung the song with melancholy seeping through the notes and her voice. The brunette imagined how Heather treated her since day one. They clearly disliked each other, but Mabel was distraught that she only had a second to see the good side of Heather. It was so tragic that she had to be killed by Bill Cipher, who stated to Mabel that the poor young teen deserved it.
The demon won't know how hurt that feels because he is unable to put himself into people's shoes. And yet, Mabel wondered why Bill decided to wipe off the gang's memories, except her. What they all remembered is the tragic death of Heather. Rosie also said that nothing was bugging her and Mabel assumed that Bill had upheld his end of the deal, though she's still not quite sure if he cure Rosie's parents. But why would she be worried about that right now? She has something important to do in a few weeks time.
The band finished the song and the crowd of families cheered for them, applauding them for performing. Heather's family uttered them a couple of thank you's and Mabel was seemingly surprised that her family are all kind people.
They left the cemetery shortly after. The Sun was bright today, casting tall shadows over the trees. White fluffy clouds were scudding across the clear blue skies. They arrived to the shack and as Mabel stepped foot on the porch, her phone rang in her sweater pocket. She took out her mobile phone and saw Pacifica's name on it. She answered it and placed the device on her left ear. "Hello sunshine and rainbows! Mabel's speaking."
"Hi, Mabel. Can you come by at Stardollars right away? I have something important to discuss with you."
"No problemlemo! Be right there in a bit!" She ended the call and skipped over to the handyman. "Hey, Soos! Can you give me a lift to Stardollars?"
Soos smiled. "Not a problem! Hop on!" The brunette got inside the handyman's truck as they drove through the town. Mabel marvelled at the new stores that just opened today and she couldn't wait to check them out. They stopped by at Stardollars and Mabel jumped off from the carseat. "Thanks for the ride, Soos."
"Anytime, dawg!" The truck drove off and was now out of sight. Mabel turned to her attention to the coffee shop before entering. It has bright emerald walls and lake-foam green ceilings. Greeny and comfy leather seats took up most of the walls. They seemed to love the color of nature very much.
Mabel caught a sight of Pacifica sitting down on one of the seats with documents laying in a mess on the table. The blonde sipped her latte, unaware of her arrival. Mabel cupped her hands around her mouth and shouted, her voice came out as a megaphone. "Pacifica!"
The blonde cringed, spilling some latte on her new rosy dress. She looked at the mess on her clothing. "Aw, would you look at that? That cost a ton of money!" She pulled out a handkerchief from her purse and wiped off the stain under her bottom lip. Her eyes then seemed to spot the brunette who was grinning at her. "Oh there you are, Mabel! I thought you wouldn't come."
Mabel smiled widely and sat down on the seat across from her. "Of course I would! I wouldn't miss it for the world!"
Pacifica breathed out a relaxing sigh. "Do you want any drinks before we can start the discussion?" She asked as she stacked up the documents. Mabel tapped her chin. "I would like a double shot mocha."
After ordering her drink, Pacifica rested her arms on the table and made eye-contact with Mabel, who was enjoyingly sipping her mocha. "Mabel, I've already told my father about the participants for the competition. He said they are too many so he decided to involve an elimination factor. That means two bands will compete with each other and the results will be in the non-participants' hands. The band that has the less votes will be eliminated. Cheating is also prohibited in the competition. That will go on until there's two remaining. And the band that has the most votes will claimed as the winner for the 2012 Annual Battle of the Bands."
Mabel cocked an eyebrow. "So this is what it's gonna be?"
"Yeah," Pacifica nodded. "We planned it to be like the whole bands competing with each other and sees which has the most votes. My father wants to be quick and easy but since they're too many, we are forced to split it up. That way, the challenge will be a lot harder and longer because you guys had to sing one different song for each round."
Mabel bit her lip anxiously, her spirits slowly sinking to rock bottom. "This..." she mumbled. "... is not what I was expecting."
The blonde nodded. "Me either. I received this message by my father just two hours ago and I know that I had to get it straight to you first, so you would have a lot of time to prepare. My father said that he will announce it two days later and I know that it wasn't enough for you to rehearse. So all I can say to you right now, is good luck."
Mabel sighed, occupying herself by trailing a circle on the table. Pacifica looked at her with concern lighting her gaze. "Mabel, are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine."
"I'm heading out now, to prepare the stages, banners and all. Would you like to come?"
"Nah, I'll be alright."
"Kay then. Suit yourself." Pacifica walked out the door and she winced when the bell above the door rang. She still hadn't quite used forgetting the bell. Whenever she hear those tinkles, she expect pain. Well, she had already stood up to her parents and none of them are emotionally abusing her anymore, so it was good.
Mabel's thoughts wandered away and she was completely staring blankly at the table and the people near her were disturbed by her demeanor. The brunette's mind was packed with anxious thoughts, song choices and predictions. Being a leader in a band was quite exhausting. She had to make sure the others rehearse well but in a fun away as possible. Her bandmates need to be happy so they could perform like professionals.
The twelve year old took out her smartphone and pressed a red play button icon, indicating YouTube. She typed into the search engine and a list of music videos appeared on the screen. Mabel had to try finding possible and suitable songs for the band and her. The song need to be full of emotions so fans could easily relate and connect to it. She saved several of them on her memo before exiting the coffee shop after drinking her delicious mocha.
Mabel decided to walk to the shack by herself and enjoyed the outstanding view nature provided around her. The pine trees were still and gave a sweet fragrance wafting through the cool air. There were bands of clouds across the pale early-evening sky now. Swirling swafts of golden sun shot through the clouds like thin columns of light. It was such a beautiful sight.
Despite her anxiety, the nature around her vanquished that feeling. Hearing the birds chirped into the sky, creating notes as if from a song. Mabel heaved a relaxing breath and stepped inside the shack after taking a brief glance of the nature. Smiling, she slowly shut the door. Walking up the stairs, she bit back a yawn and decided to dress for the night.
She went inside the shared bedroom and glimpsed Dipper chewing a pen while reading through a notebook. Raising an eyebrow, Mabel scooted to the closet and grabbed her nightgown and towel. Dipper heard her rummaging the closet and spoke. "Where have you been, Mabel?"
"I went to town to meet up with Pacifica. We had a discussion," Mabel told her twin. "I'll tell you later." She walked out, heading to the bathroom. Dipper shrugged and continue doing his work.
By the time Mabel finished her shower, the sun had slipped down below the horizon, sinking the skies into darkness and stars immediately brighten it up. It is like their duty to shine in the skies, giving a sense of hope to all living beings.
The brunette walked into the bedroom after brushing her teeth and Dipper was already settled on his bed with his PJs. The younger twin moved his gaze and muttered. "Hey Mabel, you said you'll tell me what you and Pacifica had discussed."
Mabel jumped on her bed, landing on her bottom as her bed began to bounce. "Oh yeah! First, Pacifica said that they..."
... One tediously long explanation...
"... so we have to rehearse plenty of times in these two weeks, starting by tomorrow." She enthused.
Dipper's eyes widened upon hearing this. "Are you serious, Mabel? Each different song for each round? That's insane! How ever can we rehearse for two weeks?!"
Mabel waved him in a 'calm down' manner. "Relax, bro-bro. I've got this covered. I already picked out good suitable songs for us to perform and me singing so don't you worry your head off! We need a good night sleep so we'll feel energized tomorrow morning!"
Dipper guessed that he had to listen to his sister, knowing that she's the leader of the band. The twins get tucked in their beds before telling each other good night. The two finally slipped into sweet slumber.
Mabel and Dipper woke up early in the morning. They had a huge breakfast and a quick shower before Wendy, Soos and Rosie came over. Stan let them have a two week off so they could rehearse. He didn't want to tire them all and he also desperately need the prize money.
The band practiced seven songs and studied the notes on the music sheets, trying to memorize them. Dipper had a hard time remembering the notes, causing him to pluck the wrong string. Rosie helped him with this and after a few failed attempts, he finally gets it. He also learnt new techniques that can modified the sound of the guitar such as string bending, tapping and hammering on.
During the evening, Mabel along with Candy and Grenda set out to the town to buy some clothes for the competiton. Some say looks can be deceiving, and Mabel couldn't agree more. They also came across with Sev'ral Timez and the pretty boys agreed to help Mabel with her singing, returning the favor for Mabel freeing them. The brunette learnt new things about singing and controlling her vocal cord.
The next day, they rehearsed back the seven songs they practiced yesterday and make sure they got it all right. It goes on until the last day of rehearsing before the competition starts. And on the exact day, Pacifica kindly bought the band new instruments and a fancy microphone for Mabel.
It was night time and the band was still in the practice room. Mabel stood in front of them, puffing her chest. "Okay, everyone. It's like what we practiced. We've been singing as a band these past months and a competition is just the same. Nothing is different. So good luck guys!"
Wendy, Soos and Rosie nodded before leaving to their separated homes. Mabel and Dipper climbed to bed and when the older twin was about to switch off the lights, Dipper halted her.
"You sure that we can win?"
Mabel smiled sweetly at him. "Hundred percent sure." Dipper was grateful to have an optimistic sister. Whenever he was feeling hopeless, she will be there whenever he need it. That's why he loves his sister.
"Goodnite, Dip-dop."
Dipper chuckled. "Goodnight, Mabelton."
Mabel lied her head on the comfy pillow, closing her eyes as she was about to drift away to sleep. Before sleepiness began to take over her, she heard a voice.
"Goodnight, Shooting Star."
It was early in the morning and the sun was slowly climbing from the horizon, painting the skies bright orange and yellow. The twins were in a gift shop with their bandmates and all of them were dressed with the clothing Mabel bought at the mall with Candy and Grenda. She picked out bright colors that matched and blend well with the rest.
Mabel grinned and clapped her hands. "Alrighty guys! Let's move!" When they were about to leave, Stanley approached them. "You kids are gonna leave now?"
"Yup!" Mabel enthused. "You want to come along, Grunkle Stan?"
His shoulders slumped. "Nah, I'll pass. Don't wanna my eardrums to shatter from all those drunkard music. Besides, I have a business to take care of." He said, clearly phrasing the gift shop but it was actually something else.
Mabel's face fell for a moment, but she tried to brighten herself up a bit. "Well, that's okay! We promised that we'll win the competition for you."
"And you promise that you won't use the money once you won?"
"Pinky promise!"
"Alright then. Good luck, kids." Stan muttered, leaving the gift shop. Mabel looked at him leaving and she didn't notice that the gang was waiting for her outside. "Come on, Mabel! We need to register."
Mabel shook herself from her thoughts, turning to the gang. "Oh, right. Sorry!" She scampered towards them and hopped inside Soos's pickup truck before they drove to the spot where the Woodstick Festival was held a few weeks ago.
The place was outrageous. A huge stage, the size of two mammoths, stood in front of the section where crowds would be watching. There's no one there yet, except for a few workers and the Northwest family setting up a small diner and few game booths to keep people occupied before the battle of the bands begin.
A large banner was pinned at the entrance with large shiny words that read, 'BATTLE OF THE BANDS'. Flyers were also everywhere in the area - on the poles, the booths and walls. Mabel and the others gaped in awe at the sight, the older twin pressed her cheeks hard. "Holy bamboosnazzle! I didn't expect the competition to be so... so... sparkly."
Wendy nudged Soos on the elbow. "Dude, I wanna try out these awesome games." Soos nodded eagerly. "Me too! Let's check it out!" With the two gone, Mabel grabbed the nearest person - which turns out to be Rosie. "Let's grab some snacks. This is Heaven!"
After his twin and bandmate left for the diner, Dipper observed the area and marvelled at the hard work of the workers. The multicolored lights were blinking all sorts of colors above him like he would see during Christmas. After looking at the place for a few minutes, he spotted Pacifica near the registration counter, talking to a woman who is presumably the manager.
The blonde saw a distinctive figure at the corner of her eye and forced herself to take a look despite having a crucial conversation with the manager. Her eyes widened with exhilaration when she saw that it was Dipper. She ran to him, leaving the woman staring blankly at her.
"Dipper!" Said twin glanced at the blonde running after him and he smiled. "Hey Pacifica!"
Pacifica stopped when she drew level, her gorgeous smile never leaving from her face. "Finally you're here! Let's get your band registered!" She took his wrist and began to pull him to the counter but he halted her. "Wait! Why don't we get the rest of the band?"
"It's best if we register first. Mabel probably disappeared among the candy shops we set up near here." She reassured him, though Dipper warned her for a minute. "Next time, never set up candy shops in a competition or any other place we're invited to. Mabel would at least stayed there for a good couple of hours, gobbling all the candies that were used for tasting tests. Last time I remember, she didn't get out of the shop for a week. The owner even banned her from coming."
Pacifica giggled slightly at this. "You really need to control your sister's appetite. Consuming too much sugar could lead to diabetes, y'know?"
"Yeah, well. But with Mabel, it's - hey, how do you know it could lead to diabetes? I thought rich people are supposed to be dumb."
"Dipper!" Pacifica rebuked at him. "How dare you judge me!"
The young twin chuckled. "It's true. How many sides does a pentagon have?"
Pacifica hesitated. "It's six, right?" The young boy smirked at her, which the blonde find it aggravating. She shuddered. "Stop smirking at me like that! I get it, it's wrong."
"Yup. That's a Hexagon. The correct answer is Pentagon." Dipper corrected her while raising his eyebrows. "See? I told you."
"It's not my fault that I was home-schooled when I started first grade." Pacifica protested defensively.
Dipper rolled his eyes sarcastically. "Excuses." He muttered under his breath. The duo walked to the registration counter and got their band checked. By the time they finished registering, Pacifica's parents came by. Preston held a cold stare toward Dipper. "Ah, isn't the boy who ruined the party."
"Hey, I helped you busting that ghost!" Dipper objected. Preston took no notice of this and turned to his daughter. Dipper could swore that his gaze softened when he laid his eyes on her. Pacifica must have teached them good. "Are all the bands checked in?"
Pacifica glanced at the registration briefly. "A few of them are, but not the bands outside the town."
"Thanks for the information, dear." Priscilla said, before leaving with her husband to continue their work. At that time, Mabel and Rosie appeared. Dipper flinched when he looked at his sister. Chocolate stains with nuts were covering her mouth, pieces of cotton candies were stuck on her frizzled hair with maple syrup caked on her sweater.
Dipper narrowed his gaze with annoyance. "Really, Mabel? That clothing must have cost a fortune but now, it's kind of worthless."
Mabel snickered. "Relax, brother. I've got a back-up sweater with me."
"Mabel," Dipper said seriously. "Where do you get the money to buy all of the clothes?" His twin cocked her head on one side, the problem doesn't seem serious for her. "I... uh... borrow some from Stan's office when he's not around."
"You mean you stole it!"
"Ah, come on! It's not like he's gonna blow up or something."
Back at the shack, Stanley came into his office after his work, humming the Stan Wrong Song. He sat on his comfy leather chair. "Ah, nothing but the smell of profits and money." He pulled the drawer of his table only to freeze when he see his beloved precious money gone.
"MOTHER OF GOD THAT IS HOLY! MY MONEEEEYYYY!"
Dipper sighed deeply, massaging his forehead. Rosie shook her head. "Mabel, you really need to ask his permission before 'borrowing' it."
Pacifica rolled her eyes. "Don't worry. I'll cover it for her. But you owe me one." Mabel gasped and grinned, feeling extremely grateful. Then the brunette looked around. "Where's Soos and Wendy?"
They heard victorious screams at the corner and saw Wendy and Soos playing RPG games in the game booths. "Nevermind." Mabel waved it off, a cheerful look on her face. Pacifica brushed off dust from her shoulder when she suddenly spotted two people conversing with her parents. They looked awfully familiar until she heard a snotty voice behind her.
"Well, well, look what we have here." Pacifica turned around and glared fiercely when she came face-to-face with a girl who had her flowing ginger hair tied in plaits. "Pacifica Northwest, the daughter of the ocean and the wanna-bes." She giggled with her siblings laughing alongside her.
Dipper and the others frowned at the newcomer whom they never seen in their life. Pacifica clenched her jaw. "Natasha Southeast. How I am glad to see your pathetic face wandering around here."
Natasha snickered. "Ahaha! Pacifica, the more I see you, the more brainless and dumber your insults are. When are you gonna admit that you're not in my league? Your bleached blonde hair, your clothes made from junk. You're the lowest of the low, Pacifica."
"Hi, newcomer!" Mabel momentarily appears in front of her, wearing the infectious smile she always has. She took out her hand, expecting her to shake it, which she didn't. "Name's Mabel and I'm the leader of a certain band called The Mystery Band."
Natasha's eyes widened slightly at her introduction, realizing that The Mystery Band was one of the most popular bands - if not, the first - in this town. Its popularity spread like wildfire through social media and even outside the states. But the bratty girl quickly wore her smug look again, faking surprise. "Wow, I don't know the most popular band in this town is a bunch of loser kids who have no life."
The insult pierced Mabel like daggers to her chest. Her offered hand trembled as she slowly pull back her hand. Dipper felt himself clenching his fists tight, anger surged throughout him. But he held himself back. If this brat said another insult to them, especially to his sister, she's going to get it.
Natasha turned to Pacifica. "So this is the band you're talking about on Twitter? Ridiculous. At least, we're the best of them all."
"What's the name of your band?" Rosie asked, crossing her arms. Hatred could be seen flaring in her eyes. Natasha sneered. "And why did you care? Our name's fancy and majestic. Not like those childlish names people often call stuff. Our band's called Silver & Gold."
Rosie didn't seem surprised. "Like I would expect."
Pacifica was fed up by Natasha's bratty attitude. Her family's rival is probably the first worst family in the world. At least she's not that rude to the town. Natasha had done the worst. She insult officers, blame her friends and everyone (excluding her family) for her own faults and humiliated people by letting the whole world know their darkest secrets.
Subsequently Natasha focused her attention to Mabel. "And you, what was your name again? Huh, like I do care about your name. You said you're the leader of the band. What a joke. The first time I'd ever see a leader wearing the ugliest sweater in my entire rich life! Where do you bought them? From the flee market?"
Her siblings laughed alongside her, mocking Mabel with her sweater. Discomfiture rose to her cheeks and she felt so humiliated. The brunette gabbled, attempting to retaliate. "I m-made them m-myself!"
"With what kind of thread? A cheap thread?" Natasha shook her head wryly, her shoulders bouncing from laughing. "We use real gold and silver threads, even ones from silk! Do you have any of that? Oh wait. I forgot that you guys are poor."
The gang gasped, their eyes widening at her snide remark. Hurt stabbed the fragile heart of Mabel as she felt tears pricking her eyes at this offensive comment. How dare she called them poor! She didn't know how much effort were put into this. Mabel bet they put money as their effort. Efforts worth a lot more than who-cares-it's-real-gold threads. She looked down, feeling ashamed. Mabel really has to admit, Natasha is worse than Heather. She preferred being insulted by Heather than this stupid brat.
Dipper and Pacifica both gritted their teeth, rage flaming through them. Dipper walked up beside Pacifica, glowering coldly at the snotty ginger. "Well, rich people are usually the dumbest people in the world. No offence, Pacifica."
"None taken." She replied, smirking wide.
Natasha's brows turned into a fierce frown. "Hey, I'm smart! Smarter than you!" Dipper folded his arms over his chest, with a determined and confident look on his face. "Then I'll bet ya on this. A man standing on a railroad flatcar moving at 1000ft/s to the left fires a bullet, whose muzzle velocity is 1000 ft/s in the opposite direction. What does an observer on the ground see the bullet do?"
Natasha looked blank. "Wait - what?"
"Exactly!"
The ginger glared at him and seconds later, there was ringing of a microphone echoing through the air. They didn't realize that people are now filing in the crowd section.
Preston Northwest was on the stage with his wife by his side. A table was set near them with a cloth-covered object stood on it. He held the microphone in his hands. "Welcome, residents inside and outside the town of Gravity Falls to the 2012 Annual Battle of the Bands," the crowd cheered and Preston cut in. "Twenty bands will be competing with each other tonight. Their victory lies in your hands - the voters. Make sure you make a good choice deciding who will win this Battle of the Bands and walk away with a one million dollar cash and a Northwest Golden Trophy."
He stretched out a hand and gripped the cloth before giving it a firm yank. The cloth fell away as the trophy was revealed. The crowd gasped in awe at the trophy standing before their eyes. It looked like it had come from a multi-millionaire's mansion. Made from brilliant gold that sparkled with diamanté crystals, the giant gold statue was set on an ornate walnut veneer base, upon which in grandiose, curlicued gilt letters were the words: Northwest Memorial Golden Trophy.
"Memorial? I thought you had to be dead to have a memorial named after you?" Natasha hissed, before bursting into giggles. Her sibling managed to speak a few words between his laughs. "That's a trophy? It looked like idiots making it."
Preston frowned when he heard them muttering in the crowd but continued his announcement anyway. "The competition will begin in about five minutes! Bands, prepare yourselves and good luck!"
After the announcement, Natasha shot a death glare toward Dipper and Pacifica, who flinched back in surprise. The snotty girl narrowed her eyes into slits. "I'll have you know that I will win this trophy at all costs! It'll be going home with me - Daddy already built a display case for it in the Champion's room."
"Don't you think you should actually wait until you win it first before you build a case for it? There are a lot of good bands here, you know..." Dipper began but she cut him off with a snort. "And you think you're the best, don't you? Face it, idiot. I have the most talented bandmates outside this very country and you have a bunch of kids who need proper schooling. They're too dumb to understand that we can win!"
Mabel was stilled by her words and hid her face behind her hair in embarrassment. Dipper glowered at her. "They may need proper schooling but you need a psychiatrist for thinking that you'll win! Tell the psychiatrist that you're delusional."
Natasha's face burned up at the response and stomped her foot on the ground. "Oh ho, you are a very smart boy, aren't you? But don't get used to it. Because at the end of the competition, you're going to eat your words." She turned her heel, her plaits smacked lightly at Dipper's nose. Her siblings followed her after sending them glares like royal guards protecting their queen.
Dipper rubbed his nose that was hit by her hair, feeling gobsmacked. Suddenly Pacifica tugged at his shirt. "Dipper, you must win this competition," she said, looking at him in the eye. "I can't let that brat win this. I couldn't bear the idea of her gloating for a whole year. There's no way I'm going to let that snobby ginger take home the trophy without a fight."
The young boy lowered her hand gently from tugging his shirt. "Don't worry, Pacifica. We'll make sure that she won't bring that trophy home."
A buzz was heard ringing in Pacifica's pocket. She pulled out her smartphone and answered it when she saw her father's name on the screen. "Hello? Yes, father? Uh-huh. Okay. Don't worry, I'll make sure of that. Alright. Bye." She ended the call and turned to Dipper. "My parents wanted you guys to win. Natasha's family even gloated to them. My parents believe that there's hope for you guys to win this."
"Whoa, the parents of Pacifica wanting us to win?" Mabel grinned. "That's the first!"
Wendy and Soos momentarily appears, the handyman glancing at them. "So what do we miss?" Dipper narrowed his gaze. "The Northwest's family rival gloated to them that they'll win this trophy."
"Ever since their lost to the soccer match, they've been trying to sabotage our reputation the whole time," Pacifica interjected, "and I can't allow that to happen."
Mabel tapped the blonde's shoulder reassuringly. "Don't you worry, Pacifica! I'm going to make sure that our victory will slap her in the face! C'mon, guys! Let's head to backstage!"
The gang left the crowd section into backstage where they see about twenty bands preparing themselves. Mabel spotted Natasha sitting on the reserved chairs with her bandmates. The brunette's eyes widened at the instruments they're holding - it looked so expensive! The body of the guitar and the bass is made of brilliant gold and silver. The drums even looked all brand-new.
Mabel felt herself feeling jealous. Natasha's band having very proper instruments? There's no doubt that the brat will win at this point. The brunette shook off the negative feeling and followed her bandmates to the chairs reserved for them.
The first match had started between a rock band and a pop-star band. Their singing were actually quite not that bad and at the end, the pop-star band won. The second match started with an acoustic band and a boy band. The boy band won this match and the third is Natasha's band Silver & Gold between Scars Indoors. Natasha sang A Thousand Years by Christina Perri, making her won this round. Mabel was quite surprised that Natasha had a really smooth voice. Her voice was flawless.
The Mystery Band fought with a rock band. Mabel sang the song Hello by Adele. She won this round. The second round goes normally with The Mystery Band and Silver & Gold winning. Bands began to be eliminated and it was stated that Mabel's band and Natasha's were the voters' most favorite due to their impressive singing.
The third round angers Mabel. She saw that during the three-minute break before the third round, Natasha kindly gave the voters things they wanted so they would vote her as a thank you. Talk about Pacifica's doppelganger. Isn't cheating prohibited in the competition? She should report it to someone.
No, she thought, It's better to leave that be and let 'fate' do their thing. Every action has an outcome. What goes around, comes around.
In the third round, the two fan-favorite bands won again. Bands began to be eliminated continuosly. The fourth one, they won again and the fifth was the final round with a stand-off between The Mystery Band and Silver & Gold.
The gang was in backstage, waiting for the call as Silver & Gold began performing on stage. The snotty girl sang My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion. The audience were moved by her singing, resulting them to cry. Her singing could be heard in backstage, echoing through the barren area.
"I can't believe that Natasha made it to the finals!" Dipper groaned, massaging his forehead. Soos pursed his lips. "You have to admit that her voice is sweet and smooth too."
Dipper stared at him. "Okay, I'll admit! Her voice is nice and sweet but it won't change the fact that she's a total b-"
They both suddenly heard a loud chorus of cheers from the audience as their opponent ended their performance. Mabel curled her lip anxiously. "It looks like Natasha is going to win."
"We can't let that happen, dude." Soos agreed. They saw the group walking to their reserved room, one of Natasha's siblings shooting a cold glare towards them with a smug smirk before walking away. Wendy shrugged. "Well, it looks like a war has befallen."
"Aw, and I didn't get the chance to wear my aluminium armor." Soos pouted, feeling dejected.
"Guys, look!" Rosie said, pointing to a corner a few feet away from them. Natasha was behind the door of the control room, where workers set up the microphone, spotlights and other facilities. She took a peek inside, grunting when she saw that there's a person in there. Frustrated, she walked off toward her group when a paper fell from her pocket.
Seeing that Natasha was out of sight, Wendy sneakily walked near the control room and snatched the paper from the floor before running back to the gang. "What is it, Wendy?" Dipper questioned eagerly, looking up at the teen.
"I don't get it. What does it mean?" Wendy handed the paper to Dipper, who examined the paper in such focus. His eyes widened when he knew what it meant. "Looks like someone is trying to be smart."
Mabel stood up from her chair. "What does it say, Dip?"
Her twin turned to her and the others, flourishing the paper. "Natasha is planning to sabotage the audio when we were performing. Judging by this list, she's going to make the speakers sound awful even if you sang it perfectly."
Rosie frowned. "She's really stirring up a lot of trouble here."
Mabel furrowed her eyebrows. "What the hey-hey is wrong with her? We've only met in just a short time and she now have a grudge on us?" She blew a raspberry. "This is so typical of rich girls."
"Girls like her are always self-centered and would do anything to make sure they can win." Dipper said, glancing at the paper once more. Mabel folded her arms and rolled her eyes. "Yeah. Having the most expensive instruments that sound real good, I'm sure that she's going to win at this rate."
Wendy shook her head. "People don't care if you have the proper instrument. They care on how you use it. Sure, it's nice to look good but knowing how to use it is more crucial. We made it this far. We cannot just throw in the towel."
Mabel exhaled the oxygen she kept in her lungs. "You're right. We're The Mystery Band and we cannot be beaten! We are a wonder to behold!"
Soos pumped his fist. "Yus! Let the keyboard music rollin'!"
Wendy tapped her drumsticks. "Feel the beat of my drumbeats!"
Rosie held her bass guitar proudly. "Playing the bass is no task!"
Dipper smirked, holding his electric guitar. "Electrocution all the way!"
The gang cheered, raising their fists in the air. When it died down, they heard an announcement, stating that it's The Mystery Band's turn. Mabel grinned confidently. "C'mon, girls! Let's slap Natasha's face with victory!"
"VICTOOORYY!" Soos echoed and the gang began to depart on stage. Dipper hastily tapped his sister's shoulder. He whispered. "Mabel, I need to leave for just a sec. I'll join you sooner or later."
Mabel looked apprehensive. "But what about -"
"It's only five minutes, Mabel. Okay?"
The older twin chewed her lip, feeling the worry bubbling up in her stomach. Sweat trailed down her neck and she pulled the sweater neck, allowing air in to cool the heat. "Five minutes, okay?"
Dipper nodded. "Yes, only five minutes." After getting a nod from his sister, he rushed to the corner of the backstage until he was out of sight. The young boy sprinted to the announcer area where he saw the Northwest family focusing the crowd. He lowered his voice. "Psst! Pacifica!"
The blonde turned after hearing her name and stiffened when she saw Dipper there. She too whispered. "Dipper! What are you doing?! You're supposed to be on stage!"
"I know but I need your help!"
"My help?" Pacifica mouthed. She took a brief glance at her parents to see if they're occupied by looking at the crowd before running towards Dipper. "You better hurry! Your band is about to perform in two minutes!"
Dipper nodded, frantically showing her the paper. "Okay. Just now, we saw Natasha peeking at the control room. She began to leave when this paper fell from her pocket. It says in the paper that she's planning to sabotage the audio of the microphone, making Mabel's voice sound awful even if she sang nicely. But we can't catch her because she will be doing that when we're performing so I'm counting on you to stop her."
Pacifica halted him. "Wait! This is a lot to take in. So you're basically saying Natasha is cheating to win? You should report this to us! We'll have her eliminated immediately."
"Well, I want it to be a different way. Let the outcome naturally get to her than us being the outcome of her actions," the young boy said. He was about to leave when he reconsidered something. "Oh, and take this." He handed her his Journal.
Pacifica's eyes widened. "Why are you giving me this?"
"For self-defence purposes. You don't know what Natasha has up her sleeve." He heard the ringing of a bell, indicating the band is going to perform. "I'm counting on you."
Pacifica's heart pounded. "Dipper, wait!"
He was gone. The blonde bit her lip hard, slowly glancing at the Journal. She traced the cover, the golden six-fingered hand shone under the light. Hugging the Journal to her chest, she took a deep breath and started her mission on stopping Natasha. For her friends and Dipper.
Back to the stage, Preston spoke to the mic. "Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for The Mystery Band!" The crowd cheered wildly, a few jumping in excitement. Preston felt apprehension on his features. He really hoped The Mystery Band won. Not those larrikin' snotties.
Mabel was relieved that her brother came on time and now, the gang was standing on the stage. The crowd's cheering grow louder and wilder. She managed to grin by this huge support and waited for Soos to start the intro. The notes were soft and gentle, giving the audience a relaxing feel. The brunette took a deep breath and slowly started to sing.
Like a small boat
On the ocean
Sending big waves
Into motion
Like how a single word
Can make a heart open
I might only have one match
But I can make an explosion
The nervous feeling is still there in her gut, eating away all her confidence and spirits she kept after these past weeks. She felt extremely worried because this competition will change their lives a whole lot more. Then, one positive thought forced itself into her busy anxious mind. What's the point of being nervous?
If one is feeling nervous, it will affected the actions. It will ruin your career, your performance and everything. Sooner, regret will take place. Mabel had deal a lot of pain throughout the summer. She had deal nightmares and Bill sure was right that she has guts. Mabel knew that she can handle anything, including betrayal. She released another deep breath before continuing.
And all those things I didn't say
Wrecking balls inside my brain
Meanwhile, Pacifica sprinted to backstage as her feet hit the floor. Her breathing came short and fast, sweat were visible on her face. Good thing she didn't wear make-up. Or her face would be totally ruined. The blonde stopped dead in her tracks when her gaze met with an emotionless one that belonged to Natasha Southeast herself. The ginger frowned. "Move aside, nobody!"
"No!" Pacifica strongly blocked the way, her face scrunched up with hatred. "I know what you're planning to do and I won't let you! Don't you dare sabotage the audio!"
Shock caught Natasha's throat. The ginger widened her eyes. "How'd you -" She broke off as she checked her pocket, realizing the paper was missing.
"Looking for this?" Pacifica taunted, showing the paper in front of her. Fury clouded Natasha's gaze. "You really have the nerve to mess with me, didn't you?! Don't you know who I am?"
"And don't you know that I don't care?"
"Why, you little -" The ginger stopped when a thought spanned in her head. She smirked. "It doesn't matter! Because I clearly remembered on how to ruin the performance and their lives!" She quickly ran off and Pacifica felt her heart lurching to her throat. The blonde immediately chased her.
In the middle of the chase, Pacifica readily flipped the pages of the Journal. "Come on, come on! There's gotta be a way to stop her!" She came across a page about spells and randomly spoke one that seemed right for her. "Uhhh... Corpus Levitas Diablo Daminium Mondo Vicium!"
A cold breeze entered the area and the blonde could hear rumbling which shook the backstage tremendously. Natasha tripped from the quake and landed on the floor with a heavy thud.
Worry was clearly shown on Pacifica's features. "What's... going on? What did I just read?" She looked back at the page and her eyes widened so hard that it looked incredibly inhuman. She could swore it could come out of her sockets anytime now. The page read: Zombie Spell.
"Who would keep a zombie spell in here?!" The blonde tripped and fell on her bottom. She gasped when cracks formed on the floor, bursting puff of green smoke from it. A decaying hand slowly brought up from the crack as the zombie climbed up and gave a roar.
Pacifica nervously smiled. "Hello, ugly thing."
Natasha slowly got up on her knees, rubbing her sore head. She gave a loud gasp when she saw zombies lumbering after her. "What are these ugly things?! Hey, this blouse cost more than your life! AH!"
"You don't know what they are? I'll give you a dollar and can you buy a clue?" The blonde mocked and Natasha sent her a hectic glare. "You are not helping, Northwest!"
Pacifica had the urge to laugh when the zombies wiped their gooey green substance onto Natasha, but she also felt concern with her life. She didn't know why she was feeling worried about her. However, her heart missed a beat when she saw the zombies lumbering toward the door that lead to onstage.
Oh no! Pacifica ran toward the zombies, attempting to stop them.
Back at the stage, Mabel crushed the nervous feeling in her tummy as she lowered her voice in an octave or two before rising it on the chorus.
I will scream them loud tonight
Can you hear my voice this time?
This is my fight song
Take back my life song
Prove I'm alright song
Dipper strummed up and down the neck of his electric guitar at different positions, adding some tone. He picked closer to the bridge, making the tone chunkier before picking more around the neck, mellowing out the tone.
At the corner of his eye, he spotted a lumbering figure moving closer to them. He slowly turned and flinched after seeing the zombies growling to him. The crowd gasped until one person cried out. "Awesome! Zombies to add up the performance!"
The crowd cheered wildly but Dipper was worried that the zombies could hurt them. The walking dead growled, raising their fleshy arms forward to grab the gang. Rosie jumped about a foot in the air seeing the creatures. "What on earth is that?!"
"Zombies." Dipper replied simply.
Losing friends and I'm chasing sleep
Everybody's worried about me...
Mabel turned to the corner and gave out a petrified yelp when she laid her eyes on the zombies. "Dipper, what did you do?!" Her twin objected. "It wasn't me!"
"Then who was it?!"
Her question was answered on its own when Pacifica approached them with the Journal at the crook of her arm. Mabel's eyes widened seeing the Journal. "Pacifica, what are you doing holding the book?"
Pacifica hesitated for a moment, briefly fidgeting with her fingers. "Uh... Dipper handed me the Journal as a self-defence when I tried to stop Natasha, and... I sorta uttered a spell to raise the dead."
Dipper facepalmed while Mabel made an angry annoyed face consisting of a frown and a pout similar to the episode Dungeons, Dungeons and More Dungeons. Soos spotted the zombies and he froze. "Whoa, this is totally out of the script."
"What is going on here?!" Wendy screamed as she kicked the zombie's head until it broke off from its neck.
Mabel looked at the complete disaster as the zombies tear the blinds. The nervous feeling returned, and now she felt like a thousand of butteflies knocking in her gut, attempting to get out. She swallowed the lump in her throat and heaved through her dry lungs. Their performance was ruined. She couldn't believe Natasha could get away with it.
However, she heard cheering. Mabel opened her eyes in total shock as she looked at the audience cheering for them. They seemed to love zombies in the performance. Maybe to spice things up a bit. An idea spring to her mind and she grinned. Mabel turned to the others. "Let's just continue singing and performing! You know the drill, Dipper."
Her twin frowned for a moment until he finally understood what she meant and cracked a smile. "I'm on it." He told the others and they agreed. Soon, they continued their performance - but with a louder and rocker tune. Mabel screamed at the top of her lungs on the chorus:
And all those things I didn't say
Wrecking balls inside my brain
I will scream them loud tonight
Can you hear my voice this time?
The zombies started shaking and this is where Mabel blew things up.
This is my fight song
Take back my life song
Prove I'm alright song
My power's turned on
Starting right now I'll be strong
I'll play my fight song
And I don't really care if nobody else believes
'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me
The zombies' skulls exploded, their green blood spurting from their exposed necks before flopping motionlessly on the stage. They kept exploding, releasing more blood in the air that looked like a fountain. The crowd grew more wild and they loved the performance with the new theme.
Like a small boat
On the ocean
Sending big waves
Into motion
Like how a single word
Can make a heart open
I might only have one match
But I can make an explosion
Mabel now knew that this is another way to win. Pacifica watched them with her parents, a beaming look on her face.
This is my fight song (Hey!)
Take back my life song (Hey!)
Prove I'm alright song (Hey!)
My power's turned on
Starting right now I'll be strong (I'll be strong)
I'll play my fight song
And I don't really care if nobody else believes
'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me
No I've still got a lot of fight left in me
As the song and music slowed down, one last zombie exploded behind them as a perfect ending. A few seconds later, the audience burst out from their seats, clapping non-stop and cheering loudly. Mabel, now with green blood caked on her sweater, bowed down with the rest of the group before leaving.
In backstage, the gang uttered shocked gasps with chuckles between them. Wendy gripped her auburn hair. "Dude! I can't believe it that we actually did it with zombies!"
"Woohoo! Zombies for the win!" Soos cheered, pumping his fist in the air. Mabel squealed, hopping about. "Oh my gosh, I swear that we will win! I mean, just look at the crowd!"
Rosie nodded. "Yeah! We have to wait for the announcement."
Suddenly, Pacifica appeared in the area. She squealed and embraced the twins. "You did it!" She broke the hug, her eyes lit up with joy. "You will definitely win. You guys certainly know how to rock and roll!"
"You can't call us The Mystery Band if we don't know how to rock and roll!" Mabel exclaimed as she wiggled her hips. Pacifica giggled at this when she then heard the ringing of a mic and muffled voices outside, quickly reminding her of the announcement. "Guys, the voting's closed and my dad is starting to call out the winner. Come on!"
The gang rushed outside to see the whole view of the stage where Preston was standing proudly with the mic. "Alright, folks! The voting is closed and I'm here to announce you the winner of the 2012 Annual Battle of the Bands. Drumroll, please."
The drumroll beats echoed through the air as the audience leaned in closer, expecting the band they're voting to be called out as the winner. Mabel tightened her fists, the suspense killing her. Her heart pounded to her chest and she swore it could pounce out from its place for beating too hard.
Preston opened his mobile phone (the newest tool to find out the results) and felt his eyes lit up by the sight of the band name. He took a deep breath and screamed with genuine joy. "... The Mystery Band!"
All of a sudden, Mabel launched herself in the air along with the gang after hearing their band name called. The crowd burst into cheers, raising their hands high. The others who voted for someone else instead clapped their hands for them having such amazing talent. Preston motioned to the gang to receive their prize and golden trophy and Mabel excitedly ran up the stage with the others in tow.
Soos held the huge trophy while Dipper and Rosie held the big long card with 1,000,000 dollars written in it. Mabel grabbed the microphone before speaking into it with tears of joy. "Hello everyone and thank you so much! You literally made me cry! And they're not the bad kind!"
The crowd chuckled at this as Mabel continued. "This is really amazing. I mean, I don't know that our band could be really successful. Well, it won't be successful without your huge support! The band and I had gone through numerous hardships and we've certainly not yet failed. We had done millions ways that did not work! Just to let you know, that ain't my quote!"
The gang smiled warmly at her. Mabel sighed into the mic, feeling herself getting relaxed after that extreme hyperventialiting. "All I wanna say is, thank you. Winning this means the world to us and I'm beyond blessed to even have supporters. Do we rock and roll?"
There was silence afterward and then all of the crowd cheered. "The Mystery Band do rock and roll!" Loud cheering followed shortly after that sentence and Mabel chuckled at this, feeling a warm glow lighting up the cold void in her chest. The band waved at their fans before walking down the stage. Soos's legs nearly buckled. "Aw, dude. This trophy must weight a moutain-pounds."
"Just put it down." Wendy instructed. Dipper was extremely surprised of their victory. "I can't believe it!" He laughed. "We actually won!"
Pacifica suddenly appeared behind them and squealed. "G-Guys, you did it! You really did it!" The blonde begins to hop with excitement and Mabel waved her hands in a calm-down manner. "Whoa ho, Pacifica, I have to admit. Your hyperventilating is worse than mine."
"Who cares?! I'm really happy that you won!"
Suddenly, they heard a groan not near from them. Turning around, they saw Natasha limping with her siblings holding her to make sure she stand up. The ginger rubbed her eyes and flinched seeing the gang with the trophy and prize money. She gabbled. "Y-You... won?!"
"Duh! Who's eating their words now?" Mabel smirked, crossing her arms over her chest with a Like-A-Boss look on her face. Natasha's face grew red with anger as she stomped her foot on the ground in denial. "This is an outrage! I, Natasha Southeast, object this victory! I WANT A REMATCH! You obviously lied; you didn't win this!"
"Sorry, we just did."
Natasha gasped, her jaws dropping as she felt Mabel's response leaving a huge burning scar in her chest. "No, this can't be! THIS CAN'T BE!" Her siblings dragged her away from the gang as she continued to throw a ridiculous tantrum. Mabel waved at the ginger, a grin forming in her lips. "See you in Loserville! Hahah!"
Dipper's eyes widened at this. "Whoa Mabel, isn't that a bit mean?"
"In the Mabel way!"
Her brother chuckled as he lightly punched Mabel's shoulder, which she punched back in a harsher way. Rosie smiled at this until she heard a call behind her. Turning around, she gasped at the sight of the couple. "Mom! Dad!"
Mabel's eyes widened hearing this. The brunette could swore her heart stopped for just a milisecond. She slowly spun around, her shocked face becoming more revealing as she glimpsed Rosie's parents - who both looked really young. They both seemed heathly as well. Her lips parted. Bill really upheld his end of the deal?
Rosie hugged her parents lovingly and Mrs Redwood laughed at this. "Congratulations, honey! As soon we found out the results, we just couldn't help but come over."
"That's great! Because I want you guys to meet my bandmates!" Rosie enthused. Mabel had never seen Rosie so happy. But she knew Rosie's parents would be dead if she didn't sacrifice her sanity by dealing the horrible nightmares. She's just glad that she did.
Rosie introduced them to her parents and they all greeted to each other. After introducing Dipper, Mr Redwood nodded his head impassively. "Hmm... so this is the guy you always talk about in a daily basis?"
Dipper looked surprised. "Whaaaaatt?"
"Dad! Stop making stuff up." Rosie protested, feeling a blush spreading across her cheeks before disappering quickly. Her dad laughed. "Just messing with ya, sweetie. It's nice meeting you all. It's sad that we only have a brief visit before we go back to Portland."
Shock caught Mabel's throat. "You're going back to Portland?"
Rosie nodded. "Yeah, we are well now so we decided to go back to our hometown. Wait, how'd you know we live there?"
Mabel was taken aback. Oh great, Mabel! You just have to forget, didn't cha? That battling-with-a-colossus, Bill-appearing and Stan-disappearing did not happen! After the death of Heather, we got back to the shack and everything's just fine. Argh, stupid me!
The brunette giggled nervously. "Oh ho, I... just... um... lucky guess?"
"Well, it was lucky indeed." Rosie replied with a heartwarming smile that soothes Mabel to the inside. Dipper sighed. "It's nice knowing you, Rosie. You're an awesome bassist. And thanks for teaching me some guitar tricks."
Rosie snorted gleefully. "Anytime for you, bro." They said each other goodbyes and when Rosie was about to leave, Mabel halted her. "Wait, would we see you again?"
"Well we could always stay in touch, y'know?" She replied, a real smile finally formed on her lips. "No matter how far we are, we will always be together. Even if we're not officially be side by side. Because we are..."
Mabel knew that this would be the end of their band. Rosie would be gone and there's no one else to replace her. Being the leader of the band was like her favorite hobby now besides knitting sweaters, scrapbooking and such. But Rosie's right: They would always be together no matter the distance and would never forget each other. She bended her knees with the others, a grin on her face before raising their arms in the air as they exclaimed.
"... The Mystery Band!"
