Chapter 14
Their eyes flicked from one to the other.
"You can trust me Lana, I helped you remember. The police are on their way. I believe you. I know what's he's done. Please just give me the gun."
With her eyes still on Thredson she reached over to pass the gun to Eva.
A single shot was fired.
"Don't just stand there!" Eva exclaimed reaching for the gun.
Oliver just stood there in shock horror staring back at her. "What the-"
Oliver fell to the floor clutching his shoulder stemming the flow of blood from the bullet wound. "You fucking bitch!"
"Will you just trust me for one second Oliver!"
He whimpered in pain as she knelt beside him. "Trust me." She said softly brushing his cheek.
"Police!"
Eva jumped to her feet and ran to the door holding up her hands in defence. "Officer, thank god you're here, we need you now!"
"Miss, can you step aside please, we were called about an escaped mental patient from Briarcliff." Oliver heard from outside.
"Yes, I'm Doctor Sparrow, I called you from Briarcliff, please call an ambulance. Two people have been shot!"
"Oliver... Oliver." Thredson's facial muscles twitched as he stirred from his sleep. "What happened?" He murmured.
"Oliver, you're in the hospital." He opened his eyes to a sterile white room with glaring lights, and Eva.
"What's going on Eva?" he groaned. She was sat on his hospital bed, a warm glow on her skin as she gazed down at him.
"How are you feeling?" she asked, stroking his cheek softly.
"You- shot- me."
"Oliver let me explain please-"
"What the hell were you thinking? I thought you were on her side, then you shoot her and me. You're fucking insane."
"Oliver please, i need to tell you, before you talk to the-"
"Just get out." he said in disgust.
"Oliver, please."
"You're no use to me now. Just leave, I can take care of myself."
Eva sighed and closed her eyes. She raised herself from the bed and headed to the door.
"I'll talk to them first, then I will tell you what happened."
She left.
'Stupid bitch has no idea what the hell she is doing. More the fool me for trusting her, and there was me thinking she was the one. God Thredson won't you ever fucking learn. But her skin oh god, how pale and beautiful it would be as lampshade, or a wallet, maybe even a new bloody face. Everything is hazy. Eva told me to run, and that's what i did. Till Lana showed up. That bitch called the cops, but Eva said she had. This makes no Goddamn sense. And then… Eva showed up, she believed Lana, even though she knew the truth. She took the gun and shot her. Crazy bitch, she's got less sense than those in Briarcliff. And they say i'm clearly insane. Then she shoots me and tell's me to trust her? I need to know what the hell is going on.'
In agony Thredson heaved his aching body from the comfort of the bed and out into the hallway of the hospital ward. Eva, with a newspaper in her hand saw him stagger and clutch onto the rail on the wall. He was weak from the shooting. She ran to him.
"Oliver you should be in bed." She said grabbing him under the arms and taking his weight for him. He winced as she brushed his shoulder.
"I'm so sorry, come on, let's get you back to bed." Together they managed to get him back into his bed.
"Now will you tell me what's going on?" He asked, adjusting his glasses, which had a small crack in the lense from the fall.
"Ok, but you have to promise me this will stay between us."
"Why?"
"Trust me."
"I seem to be doing that a lot these days and here I am with a bullet in my shoulder."
"Just this one last time please, let me explain."
"You have one chance Sparrow, and this better be good."
"Lana hid your confession tape under the baths in the hydrotherapy room, I found it the day she hid it there, that's what i had in my draw. By the time you found the children's book Lana had already switched the fake tape for it. The tape she sent to the police was a recording of music I had taken for personal use. I couldn't tell you because it was too risky at the time. I told you to run because if you did, i knew you would be safe. When you had gone, one of the nuns told me Lana had gone, and i just knew yours would be the first place she would go. I phoned the police and drove straight to your house, I told them an escaped mental patient was coming after you. I needed Lana to believe that i was on her side so she would lower the gun. Yes i shot her. And i shot you."
"Why?"
"The police believe that Lana shot you and was about to finish you off but i talked her out of it grabbed the gun and shot her in self defence. That is my story and i would be obliged if you stuck to it as well. They think she came after you because of the failed attempts to cure her homosexuality, however she was interrupted."
"And what of bloody face?"
"As far as the police are concerned, Kit Walker was the killer but has disappeared after fleeing from custody. Know one knows the truth but us." She smiled.
"Curious. Why have you done this for me?"
"Oliver you know why."
"I do not. Would you care to enlighten me."
"Oliver…"
He raised his thick eyebrows, "Well?"
"Because i love you goddamn it!"
