Someone to Watch Over Me
She'd come as soon as she'd heard, waiting for the others to leave before venturing anywhere near his room. He looked smaller than she remembered, but there was no mistaking that face - even under the bruises. He turned in his sleep, and she grimaced at his troubled expression, telling herself she'd never wished for this to happen, no matter how angry she'd been in that hotel room.
She stopped a nurse on her way out, handing her the book - Chaucer, just like his mom used to read him.
The nurse frowned. "Who should I tell him it's from?"
Elle turned away, her eyes downcast.
"A friend."
