Sometimes goodbye, though it hurts in your heart, is the only way for destiny; sometimes goodbye, though it hurts, is the only way now for you and me. Though it's the hardest thing to say, I'll miss your love in every way. So say goodbye, but don't you cry, because true love never dies. ~ 'Say Goodbye', S Club 7

You have to leave. You know you do, and she does too, but she's crying anyway, and you surprise yourself by crying too.

"Sam-" She manages weakly, choking on her own sobs. You know she doesn't want you to go; she didn't even want you to sign up. But you did anyway. You knew you wouldn't get into any colleges, and would end up just like your mom, an uneducated, unemployed deadbeat, left glued in place while she sped along the Road of Life. This was the only way for you to match her pace.

"Carls..." You start, brushing a few tears away from her glistening chocolate brown eyes. "Don't make this harder than it is." She pulls you into a hug, burying her head into your green coat.

"But...I can't lose you Sam again. I almost lost you once, but not again." She whispers, lifting her head to look at you, a pleading look in her eyes. It's true; she was close to losing you, and you were close to losing her. When Jonah came back, he sounded so sincere, and you were sure he meant it when he said he loved, and when he proposed. You, of all people, should know that no one ever changes. But you were lonely and desperate and most likely spiraling into depression; you weren't thinking straight. You abandoned Freddie because Jonah told you to, but more importantly you abandoned her. But she didn't abandon you. She fought and clawed her way into your heart, and showed you that Jonah hadn't changed, and that he was already married, and it was then that you realized who you really loved. You cried, out of sorrow for being so stupid and out of joy for knowing it wasn't too late, and she could still be yours, and now she is yours. But you have to go now, and as you brush a strand of chestnut hair behind her ear and share one last passionate kiss, you gently pry her off of you and give her one last look filled with memories both good and bad.

You take one last glance around the apartment where you practically grew up, then utter a final "Bye, Carly."

It's barely audible, but she hears you, and knows there's no changing your mind, because she knows you never change your mind. You don't think she's going to say anything, with her head down, tears falling gently on the carpet, so you grab your camouflage Army backpack and sling it over your camouflage-clad shoulder and turn to the door and open it when you hear a quiet,

"Bye, Sam." You turn around to give her one last glance, and you can see she's smiling weakly, trying to be happy for you, and she says shakily, "I love you."

You return her smile, tears sliding down your cheeks, and choke a feeble "Love you, too." Then you head into the hallway, and shut the apartment door maybe for the last time, and think for a moment on the memories you both shared, and you and she, both miraculously thinking the same thought, both of you know it'll be alright, because true love never dies.

A/N: Well that was fun...and rambling. But I was listening to this song nd this just sprang into my head. BTW if u didn't get it Sam's going to war. Reviews are nice :)
