Squirrelflight stared at the brown tabby, thinking horrible thoughts about him, his brother, and his father. Ever since he had made friends with Hawkfrost, Brambleclaw had walked away from her. But she didn't care. Who would? Still, as Squirrelflight turned back toward Ashfur, she couldn't help but wonder if something was missing.

Brambleclaw tried to sleep, but soon found he couldn't. His mind was on Squirrelflight, like always. Why did she have to see the worst in his brother? Did that mean that she saw the worst in him? No, never. He watched enviously as she curled up next to Ashfur, and briefly wondered why this had all gone wrong.

The next morning, Brambleclaw was chosen to do the Dawn Patrol. He looked for Squirrelflight, but soon noticed that she was padding away with Ashfur, her tail entwined with his. Brambleclaw narrowed his eyes in jealousy, but padded away.
