Chapter 1

*Celeste/Rumpleteazer*

"To do that, we need Munk." Deme spoke loudly though her voice cracked. Bomba and I could both tell that Deme did not want to face her mate, but it was for the best. We all nodded in agreement for we knew that without the protectors we would fail at saving our friends and family.

"Well, let's ge' ta I'." I said jumping up and approaching the exit.

"Rump wait, it's too late to go tonight." Deme called from behind me. I froze in shock, she shouldn't know that name. I hadn't slipped up had I? Thinking back to today I remember Eva calling me Rump, but only Bomba heard her Deme wasn't there.

"Who?" I asked weakly without turning around. I felt a paw on my shoulder and tensed further. I was scared if she knew who I was, then she would tell the rest of the jellicles that Macavity was my dad. They would kick me out and I doubt Jer would leave especially since I've just ditched him to live with a queen I don't even know just to be treated like a kitten. I pulled away and walked across the room before turning to face the queens. "Wot did ya call meh?" Deme shook her head and with tears in her eyes took a couple steps towards me.

"Rump its short for Rumpleteazer, which I named you." I stepped back again in fear.

"No! Meh mothah is dead." Deme physically flinched and stepped back towards Bomba. I felt drained there was nothing anymore. No hope, no trust in the mother who left me behind. At least if she was dead like I thought, then she could have loved me. "No…Woi?" I barely managed to whisper. Without waiting for a reply I bolted out the door. I wasn't sure where I was going or what I was going to do, but I needed to get away from there. My mother has been so close this entire time and I haven't felt more unloved. Blinded by my haste of fleeing the junkyard I slammed into another cat knocking us both to the pavement.

"Ach Lassie woi don' ya slow down so ya don' knock an old geezah loike mehself down again." I sighed in relief that I hadn't run into one of Macavity's goons.

"Sorreh sir Oi didn' mean ta. Oi'll be more careful nex' toime" He stared at me curiously and I felt very nervous under his gaze.

"Oi wouldn' know ya now would Oi Lassie?" I shook my head 'no' and started shifting nervously from foot to foot. "ya sure? Oi seem ta know ya, ach well funneh how we talk the same eh?" I nodded just wanting to get away, I couldn't be far from the junkyard. "Your no' in trouble ah' ya Lassie?" I glared at him suddenly feeling my anger bubble to the surface. My anger had nothing to do with him but I had been holding it back for way too long.

"Woi would ya think tha'? Jus' cuz Oi am runnin' around town a' nigh' Oi in trouble?" He didn't respond to my outburst instead his gaze became a sympathetic one.

"Oi didn' mean no trouble Lassie, ya seem a little ou' of sorts though. Oi can ge' ya some food an' a warm bed if ya loike?" I eyed his attire curiously wondering if I could trust him, he had on a vest with a rusted watch in the pocket. The cat in front of me seemed proper almost.

"Wot i' going ta cos' meh?" I asked cautiously. He shook his head in response and looked at me with a fatherly glance.

"Nothin' Lassie Oi jus' wan' ya ta be safe, Oi'v got a couple princess kits mehself an' Oi wan' someone ta help them if theeh need I'." I nodded my head and for some reason trusted him, besides I didn't want to stay on the street in fear of Macavity finding meh.

"Ok, lead the waeh." He nodded and held his paw out in front of him to motion the way we were going. Surprising it was the direction I had come from and I hesitated thinking we would be going back to the junkyard. I shook my head, I hadn't seen him while I was there so he must not be part of the Jellicle tribe. We neared the Junkyard, but he turned left instead of entering it.

"We will entah the den from the back so we don' chawnce wakein' anehbodeh." I nodded in agreement and he rounded a corner and moved a piece of cloth out of the way revealing a tunnel. "Oi will go in first okaeh?" I nodded once more and followed him through the tunnel. We exited the tunnel into a warm looking room, even in the dark. He showed me over to a cushion on the floor. "Oi hope this will be okaeh? The meal might have ta wai' till morning Oi am nothin' of a cook." He cracked a grin at his joke and I smiled politely back.

"This is foine, thank ya." He smiled at me again in a fatherly way, then disappeared into a back room. I sat down on the couch cushion, but didn't intend to sleep. My mind was buzzing with everything I learned today. I should have listened to the clues on who my mother was, Eva practically told me that it was Deme. I guess I'm just pig-headed and didn't want my illusion to be changed. Slowly I sank further into the soft comfy cushion, and without recognition fell into a deep sleep.

Feeling a paw on my shoulder I opened my eyes to find the Tom from last night crouching next to me. "There ya ah' Lassie." He grinned as though he told a joke. "Meh mate has made some food, so how abou' tha' warm meal?" I nodded eagerly, I hadn't eaten in a while due to all the drama at the junkyard.

"Yes, please." I sat up and stretched carefully a pain in my stomach reminded me of the stitches. Looking down I found that they were bruised and looking infected. I touched them and grimaced in pain. The tom's paw pulled mine away.

"Don' touch them Lassie, ya make i' worse. Meh mate can fix those up too." I frowned while looking at the ground.

"That's no' necessareh, ya done so muh alreadeh." He shook his head and helped me up and led me into another room.

"None of tha' Lassie, Oi am no' going ta le' ya walk ou' of hahe with those stitches lookin' loike tha'" I nodded and looked up from the floor only to find Jenny staring at me in shock. What the hell, can I not even runaway properly?

"This ain' fair." I groaned and turned to exit the den as quick as possible.
"Something wrong Celeste, not expecting to see me." Jenny spoke I turned to look at her and grinned.

"No' this soon." I turned to the confused Tom watching us carefully, "Coulda told meh ya wahe a Jellicle." I accused. He threw his hands up in the hair in surrender.

"Oi didn't think i' would mattah Lassie, Oi jus' didn' wan' ya sleepin' in the streets." I grimaced, Jenny was not going to take that information well.

"What!" I threw my hands into the air. Well now she knew. I chuckled nervously moving towards the door.

"Oi think Oi am going ta take a walk now." And without a warning I bolted from the den. This time I used the front entrance which was probably my first mistake. Jer was headed inside and I knocked into him.

"Les, Oi thought ya wahe at Demeter's Den?" I shook my head in shock, jumped up and raced away. I happened upon the clearing where Bomba was talking to Munk, or yelling, and Deme was crying behind her. "Les wait!" Jer called behind me. Deme looked up and her eyes locked on me and she stood

"Rump, please let me explain." I shook my head and spun around to run in the direction I came from only to find Jenny, her mate, and Jer there. I couldn't handle all this stress. I dropped to my knees and started sobbing hysterically. I eventually fell over to my side and lay in the fetal position shaking and whimpering. Strong arms wrapped around me picking me up. I struggled figuring it was Jer, and he was one of the ones I didn't want to talk to right now, instead the arms tightened.

"No you don't, not here." A cat I didn't recognize whispered. He walked away from the clearing and I noticed only one cat followed and that was a queen who looked identical to the tom holding me.
