After hours of discussing all the important details with Kensi, Eric and I were finally alone again. Eric and I were on the couch talking about the things that Kensi and I had talked about before about our wedding and he seemed to agree with everything we had discussed. I couldn't be more in love with him because of what we had been through and I was glad that he was agreeing with what Kensi and I had discussed, it was kind of strange thinking that I knew what he wanted. We were just about to settle in for a movie when the phone rang. Eric picked up the phone and answered
"Hello you're speaking with Eric" he answered, making a mental note not to answer the phone like he did at work as it was usually our parents ringing us on the home phone.
"Uh yes of course here she is" he said and handed me the phone mouthing to me that it was my mother.
"Hey mum" I said
"Nell, how are you darling?" she asked and I smiled
"Exhausted" I said and I heard her tsk through the phone
"Nell you know that you need to take a little break darling. That journalism job has you doing unbelievable hours and its hard on you and poor Eric what with him being a professional black jack player" she said and I frowned, I hated lying to my family, especially my mother and father but that was the risk of doing our jobs, we couldn't let them know the risks that we faced every day. Eric was beside me again and he could hear everything that was being said
"I know Mum but to get a good story we have to be able to be prepared to capture the story at a moment's notice" I said and she sighed
"I know Nell, it's your job but you need to be looking out for yourself as well" she said and I nodded.
"Anyway so why are you calling?" I asked noticing that Eric had leant forward to grab the note pad off the table and was writing something for me to read
"Well I was ringing to let you know that your father and I are coming to LA to visit you. We're flying out on Friday and will be there early Saturday morning" she said and my mouth dropped and Eric paused his writing to look at me. He turned the note around and I read what was written on the paper 'Tell them the truth. Tell them you're pregnant'. I nodded, a small smile graced my lips when I felt the reassuring squeeze that came from Eric's hand.
"Uh mum where dad is?" I asked
"He's just returned from work. Why's that Nell?" she asked and I took a deep breath
"You might want to put the phone on loud speaker Mum" I said and she did so, calling my father at the same time.
"Alright Nell what is it?" Mum asked and I heard dad pull up a seat
"Nelly Belly is that you?" Dad asked and I smiled at the nickname my father had given me when I was little
"Yeah dad it's me" I said and he was about to say something when mum butted in and said
"Nell said she had something to tell us so be quite Stewart" she said and I almost laughed
"Alright, what is this news that you have Nelly Belly?" he asked and I looked at Eric whose eyes shone with pride and at the nod I smiled telling them our news
"Mum. Dad. I'm five months pregnant. Eric and I are expecting a baby in October" I said and I heard my mother's squeal and my dad congratulating us and then the squeals of joy coming from my older sister who had moved back in with our parents six months ago when her husband had cheated on her, and she'd left with the kids.
"This is fantastic news Nell, we'll have to go shopping and get baby clothes and toys when were in town" mum said and I smiled
"Of course mum. Eric and I are really excited to see you both, but we need to get something ready for dinner, I'm starving" I said
"Wait you didn't tell us if we're having a granddaughter or grandson?" Mum asked and I smiled
"We're having a little girl mum" I said and she squealed again
"Alright we'll let you go. Love you Nelly Belly" Dad said and I smiled
"Love you too dad"
"Bye Nell" Mum said
"See you soon mum" I said hanging up the phone. Eric wrapped his arms around my neck and kissed my forehead
"Well that's your family in the know. Now we just need to tell my mum and sister" he said and I kissed his cheek, seeing the pain in his eyes
"It's going to be alright Eric I'm sure that your mum will take the news really well" I tried to reassure him. Eric's mum was rather ill, she suffered from dementia and was in a home, and his sister was in a career he rather didn't like.
"I know" he said getting up "Alright, I'll get dinner ready and then we can watch our movie" he said leaving me alone on the couch.
Honestly I was worried about Eric, there weren't many things that could get him this worked up but at the mention of his mother and sister he was already trying to divert the conversation. It hadn't been long after Eric and I had started dating that he'd had to place her in a home because she'd gone downhill very quickly, and had become rather lucid in the last six months. It was even harder because he'd lost his dad to cancer a year before I meet him. Getting up slowly off the couch I made my way into the kitchen and wrapped my arms around Eric's waist. As I rested my head against his back I could feel the violent sobs that shook through his body. I turned him around to face me
"Eric, everything will be ok. I know it doesn't seem that way right now but it will" I said and he nodded a sad smile gracing his face
"I just wish that she would remember me once when we go in and visit her" he whispered, and I nodded, it was hard for us to visit, she didn't even know who Eric was 99% of the time and when she did recognise him she accused him of not loving her enough to take her to her husband's grave. Her condition had deteriorated since the death of her husband, Eric's dad and that seemed to be the only recent thing that she remembered with clarity.
"Can we not talk about this Nell, I just, I don't think I have the energy to do so at the moment?" he asked and I nodded
"Sure" I said not speaking after that just holding him close. About five minutes later he leant down and kissed the top of my head
"Thank you Nell, for not pushing it" he said and I smiled
"I love you Eric" I said and he placed a kiss to my lips
"I love you too Nell" he said a small smile on his face.
