Jace's POV
The first thing he heard when gained conscious was an unidentified voice screaming about some rune marking. Jace's eyelids were so heavy it was a strangled effort to force them open and investigate the heated conversation taking place just feet away.
"We have to act now, even if Jace isn't with us, we don't know how long we'll have this opportunity, Alec." He was finally coherent enough to identify the voice as Izzy. The words she spoke with such determined confidence made him want to scream at her stupidity but his mouth was dry like sandpaper and swallowing was hard enough as it is.
"I really hope you don't mean that, Iz" Jace managed to rasp out, feeling blood wet his tongue from his dry throat. His limit on words caused him to speak with his eyes, narrowing them into icy daggers staring right at Izzy's equally pissed ones.
"Well, well, look who decided to wake up from the dead. Don't think you can lecture me when you have no rutting idea what's going on outside this room."
Dammit, he hadn't even thought about his own state yet, let alone anything outside this room other than Clary's safety. Now that he was more aware, he glanced down to his abdomen where he caught the edges of piercing black and purple bruises slowly fading inwards on themselves as they healed. And yet he couldn't see any healing ruin initiating the process.
"Would someone care to fill me in on what the hell is going on here?" Jace spoke the words venomously while pointing at the blemish on his stomach.
"Take it easy, Jace. You and Clary just about died so I'd suggest you give us some credit and calm down before you start demanding answers." Alec spits the words out, never taking his eyes off his sister. Clearly something serious was in the works here.
Jace sighs and runs his hand through his hair, a nervous habit of his, and leans back down on the cot. "Okay, hit me with it. Whats up?" Jace acted as if he was calm and collected, for the sake of assessing the situation, but the mention of death and Clary didn't sit well with him.
"We don't have much time for the full story, Magnus will be here any moment to continue tracking down Clary, but when I tell you, you need to promise us you won't go all alpha male and go running off okay?" Iz questioned, ensuring he wouldn't do anything stupid to destroy the plan they've seemed to make. He gave a brisk nod and waited for her to continue.
"Do you remember me bringing you soup earlier to make you feel better? Well as you ate it you started to freak out and squirm around and i caught a glimpse of your stomach.
"It was bad, Jace. I'm talking seriously life threatening shit here. It kept getting bigger and darker so we had magnus come in and look." Iz briefly looks down at her boots before continuing.
" He saw her, Jace, and it wasn't looking good. She had the same wound as you, only hers penetrated the skin, like she'd been stabbed or something. Blood everywhere." Jace shuddered and wished he could have been there with her to comfort her and ease her pain.
"How was Magnus able to see her?" He managed to choke out.
This time it was Alec who answered, finally looking Jace in the eyes. "Sebastian brought her outside the wards of wherever they are, so he could heal her. That's why you are healing without a ruin, it's on her wound not yours. You're connected to her Jace. Somehow whatever happens to her happens to you. Who knows if it's the reverse as well, all we know is that Magnus can start tracking her and we can leave as soon as possible, even if-"
Jace cuts him off, all but yelling his warning. "In no world would i ever put myself before Clary, I'm going no matter what."
As he finished speaking, Magnus walked in, as sparkly as ever, "I've pinpointed her location, we leave within the hour." He announced confidently, as if Clary's life didn't hang in the balance.
Clary's POV
Waking up to the sight of a monster in disguise scared Clary to her bones. Not enough for her to ignore the insistent throbbing pain at her abdomen, where she'd impaled herself on her bed post. The memories of her troubled breaths and dripping blood hit her like a train head on, and her eyes closed again, fighting the need to fall into a deep sleepful abyss.
"Clarissa, my dearest sister, thank god you're alive. I love you, I love you, I love you, I'm so sorry Clarissa, so sorry." The monster continues to weep at her side as her eyes flutter closed.
"We need to get her back into the wards, Master, or the Angel boy will find her much too soon." A voice deep and gravely said from farther away. Marax.
Clary felt deeply conflicted. She wanted greatly to be saved by Jace and her friends but the realization of what Sebastian would do if they found her overpowered that desire. Nagging thoughts of her weakness hit her, reminding herself that Jace will no longer want such a deeply damaged girl when he could truly have anyone.
Strong arms worked there way under her body and began to lift. She struggled as much as she could through the pain of her wound until he dropped her back down.
"Please let me help you, we have to do this to keep you safe, love." he said softly in her ear, reaching again for her stomach, this time, whether she was too tired or didn't want Jace to be hurt, she let him take her inside, back to the house of horrors.
