Chapter 7
"What do you and Miles do together? He really doesn't really seem your type." Colin said glancing at his twin while driving to school.
"What do you and Sam's gang do together? They don't really seem your type?" Darcy replied snarkily.
"I have a type?" Colin's brow furrowed in confusion.
"So I have a type?" Darcy challenged.
Colin sighed "Can you stop parroting my words?"
"Oh I don't know Colin, why don't you tell me?" She crossed her arms and stared at him.
He felt his anger rising but knew he couldn't let it and so they kept quiet for the rest of the drive with Darcy turning away from him and staring out the window once she realized he was not going to carry on the conversation.
They got out after parking and anybody watching closely could easily guess that they weren't on the best terms with their rigid body language.
Of course, she noticed Colin's new friends and they offered smiles which she returned with a confused expression and continued on.
"What's wrong? You fought?"
Colin looked up in surprise when Paul spoke. He didn't ever really speak to him but he wasn't hostile either..just..aloof?
"Err..It's nothing. We'll be fine by the time school's over." He said nonchalantly.
Paul nodded. He didn't want her to be burdened with extra thoughts while he was trying to find his way in.
He knew from Embry who had patrolled with Colin that she had been wondering what he was doing getting all chummy with them. Maybe that's what they talked about. He didn't want to think about it though because that was another hurdle he would have to cross. He had absolutely no idea how he would disclose to her his 'condition'.
Embry did try to comfort him by saying that since Colin was one she should be fine with it. It did nothing to ease his nerves.
He was still struggling to get her to look at him and acknowledge his presence. He really didn't want her to know any time soon about their extracurricular activities.
He gazed after her as she walked in the school gates, hoping she would turn around to look at him once.
She did turn but for Spectacles.
"Hey Darce!" Miles placed an arm around her. They were the same height now.
"Hey Milo!" Darcy replied with the same enthusiasm and an arm around his shoulders.
He twisted his face in disgust.
"That is such a dog name."
"It was. It was that cute dog's name in that Mask movie." Lexie said as she linked Darcy's free arm with hers.
Miles twisted his face further making the girls laugh. Miles stood out like a carrot amongst grapes in the school.
He didn't inherit his mother's native looks but his dad's pale complexion and pale blue eyes and curly blonde hair.
He was a really good student and impressed the teachers, never got into trouble and hardly ever missed a school day.
Lexi soon said goodbye as they all had different classes.
Once she was gone, Miles caught her arm as she was about to leave.
She looked at him in question. She could feel his palm was clammy and he seemed nervous yet excited.
"Hey, want to go on an adventure with me?"
"An..adventure?" Darcy asked tilting her head. Miles was a play-it-safe kinda guy.
"Well, it's more of an assignment but it sounded better." He shrugged sheepishly.
Darcy smiled as she ruffled his hair. "Sure. I'll ride with you then." She started to leave but was grabbed by the wrist.
"Actually…I..we need to leave at lunch." He looked straight in her eyes.
Darcy felt hers widen.
"Miles R. E. Gordon wishes to skip school. This has to be important." Darcy smirked at him.
"I..yeah..it kinda is." He squirmed and adjusted his glasses." You don't have to of course."
Darcy straightened up. "I'd be honored to skip school with you, my lord." She bowed a little.
Miles smiled wide and ruffled her hair. "And you call me dorky."
With that the two friends parted ways unaware of a very jealous wolf witnessing their interaction.
Lunch couldn't come early enough for Miles, Darcy and Paul.
Darcy had already informed Lexi who didn't mind not joining the fun since she had a date with Em straight after school.
Paul stood rigidly as Miles and Darcy raced past everyone giggling and holding hands.
"You are such a bad boy!"
He heard Darcy whisper to him just as they made it out the school doors and Paul had to leave as well so he didn't break the school.
Darcy felt a mixture of guilt and pleasure when she caught Paul's expressions. He was jealous. A blind person could smell it for miles. But he had no reason to be jealous she thought bitterly. Plenty of girls were ready to drop their panties at the very sight of him.
No, there was no time for these thoughts. She was with Miles and determined to enjoy herself. It had to be a very special occasion. Miles most definitely did not do this often.
She felt wanted and satisfied in some way. At least someone still wanted to hang out with her.
She sighed and rubbed her temples. It wasn't like Lexi didn't want to but she knew she was building her relationship with Em. So what made her so angsty all the time?
She knew the answer but refrained from trying to think over it too much.
"Hellooo! You still with me?" Miles waved his hand in front of her face and Darcy realized he had been calling out for a while.
"Of course!" She forced a smile and got out of his car only to realize they weren't at either person's home but somewhere on a trail leading into the forest.
Darcy shivered involuntarily. She wasn't too fond of the wild. Neither was Miles.
She looked around to see him hauling two bags out of the trunk. Darcy caught the one he gave her and looked at him quizzically.
"We'll need these."
With that he turned and started walking further into the forest.
Darcy sighed and adjusted the straps of the backpack on her shoulders as she began following him. She knew he wasn't going to talk any more. His stature was all stiff and alert now; a man on a mission.
After walking or wandering, according to Darcy, in the forest for almost an hour she was ready to sit. Her feet ached to be let off free from the confines of her shoes, her bones ached for a nice hot shower. The cold air was nipping at her face and she didn't like it.
"Miles, can we…"
"Shhhh.. they'll hear you!" Miles turned to look at her and she almost fell back because of the look in his eyes. They were wild.
"Who?" She whispered suddenly afraid. Miles didn't look very sane to her at that moment. She realized she had been so lost in her thoughts she hadn't actually bothered to ask him what they were doing here in the first place. His mission, whatever it was, was still unknown to her.
Miles turned, looked her dead in the eyes, "The wolves".
:D
