Here's another chapter-

Chapter 8

"Wolves? Wolves…like real, live wolves?!" Darcy whisper screamed once she shut her mouth after a whole minute of gaping at him.

"Wolves like dire wolves and yeah live ones." Miles said excitedly while keeping his voice low.

"Are you crazy? Dire wolves are extinct!" Darcy said angry now while looking at her friend. Was this some kind of a joke?

"That's what I knew too but my uncle swore he saw a dire wolf right here in these woods and I think I saw one too recently."

Darcy nearly bumped into him when he stopped talking abruptly and turned.

"And please don't call me crazy. It makes me mad."

Darcy stared into his eyes which seemed to hold some emotion she couldn't identify but didn't sit well with her.

He smiled at her and turned to follow some invisible path deeper in.

Darcy shuddered. She wasn't feeling safe anymore. Goosebumps rose on her skin. She could probably take him down in case this was some kind of a lure to get her some place but what if there were others?

She shook her head. She was his only friend besides Lexi. Or was she?

Her pulse was pounding in her ears as she remained undecided. Should she continue in or retrace her steps?

She looked around. The trees seemed to grow thicker and denser. The sounds of the forest surrounded her. Visibility around her had decreased. As it was La Push wasn't exactly sunny. But now it seemed to be getting darker and her location in the forest made everything seem eerie.

Darcy looked around becoming more aware of her surroundings now. She had been simply following Miles before but as she took in her milieu a shiver racked her spine.

This wasn't good. Everything screamed danger to her. If his imaginary dire wolves didn't then maybe a hungry bear would definitely have them for dinner or maybe a coyote or a mountain lion or…the list of predators was endless. She hadn't really looked them up before, didn't have a reason to.

"Miles?...Miles!" Darcy tried to move forward stealthily but leaves crunched under her feet and even that creeped her. She stopped walking and looked around helplessly.

Miles seemed to have moved forward. He probably assumed she would follow.

Darcy scowled. She had for so long. Obviously he would think so. Not any more though.

Darcy turned around and started walking. If she kept walking straight back, she would reach his car and then she would take her backpack and leave.

Damn it! He locked the car!

"Arrgh!" Darcy let out a frustrated cry and turned once again to get the key from him to get her bag. She had homework and even her cellphone was in the bag.

"Stupid, stupid, stupid!" She chided herself as she made her way back in being careful so as not to step on snakes..oh yeah, there were those too in the woods. How come she didn't think of them before?

Darcy frowned. Maybe Paul knew the forest better. He did seem to spend some time in here.

She chuckled at the sudden image of him in leafy underwear, trapezing from tree to tree crossed her mind.

She stopped short and blushed. He would look good in that.

Huh, so much for not thinking about him.

Darcy looked up and saw it was getting darker. She decided to rummage through Miles' bag to look for a flashlight. He had to have one in there.

Her stomach grumbled. Hopefully some snacks too.

She sat down on the forest floor and opened the bag. The flashlight was easy to locate but as she went through the contents of the bag she discovered he was probably paranoid about the dark and being hurt and there seemed to be more batteries and medical supplies but no sight of food or even water.

"What were you thinking?" She talked to herself even as her mind tried to figure out who she was directing the question at; herself or Miles?

She growled her frustrations out while zipping the bag up.

A howl sounded and she got up faster than she should have and lost her balance to fall right on her bum.

"Ouch! That hurt!" She got up grumbling but being careful not to lose her footing again.

"Oh screw this..I'm going home." She told the wilderness around her.

Truth be told, she was scared shitless and more than ready for hot chocolate and a warm bed right after a hot shower. She smelled like the mud now. She wanted to wash it off.

Switching on the flashlight she was now armed with, she strode confidently into the fading light having absolutely no idea if it was the right direction.

She shivered as she felt the air around her grow colder as the temperatures dropped.

"Damn you, Miles. You should have added a blanket and less butterfly bandages to the bag."

Someone chuckled." Not everyone is smart enough to prepare for a campout in the woods."

Darcy spun on her heels to identify the source of the words but found herself unable to do so. There was a light breeze now and leaves were rustling around her. He could be anywhere.

Darcy's heart raced as she realized it was a man's voice and he obviously had a clear sight of her but she did not. She stopped herself from asking out loud who it was. She had a feeling that wouldn't go down well.

Heart pounding she held out the flashlight and moved it around in the hopes of seeing the person.

The wind whistled in her ears and her skin prickled. She knew for sure she was in danger. Her sixth sense was in overdrive that way. She was counting on her sight more than her ears to locate this person. With her heart pounding so loud she doubted she could hear a bomb go off much less a person.

Another howl sounded in the forest, the sound seemingly echoing around the trees. It sounded far off though.

Right now she would take the wolf to facing this person. She probably would have a chance against it.

"We should probably leave before one of those things finds us."

The same voice sounded uncomfortably close to her. As she spun around to face the voice, she felt a blow to her head and everything turned dark.

Let me know how you like it so far.
