Chapter 5

A month went by. Routines were established in the Mitchell household that were not much different from the ones Beca and Chloe had 4 years ago.

Except now, they were just co-inhabitants. And nothing more.

There were moments when both of them felt like they wanted to say something; something to address the awkward yet somewhat familiar situation they were currently living in. But in the end neither of them had the courage to do so. And that usually resulted in even more awkward conversations -

"Beca, I think I should pay you rent."

"Why?"

"Because I don't think it would be appropriate for me to stay in your apartment, for free…?"

"Okay."

"So… How much should I pay you?"

"I don't know… Perhaps you can pay for groceries instead?"

Getting into the 12th week of pregnancy meant that it was time for Chloe to visit Stacie. The appointment was scheduled during lunch hour on a weekday so Chloe didn't have to take time off from work. She was well-prepared to meet Stacie alone but Beca insisted on joining them; in the end Chloe figured it wasn't worthy to argue so she gave in.

In the recording studio that morning, Beca was more fidgety than usual and it did not go around unnoticed.

"Beca, dude, are you alright?" Frank yelled out from the booth.

"Yep, I'm fin- Shit! Is that the time?" Beca bounced up from her chair and started packing; that was accompanied by a lot of very colourful wordings.

Frank came out from the recording booth, utterly confused. This was not how his music producer usually behaved, and it got him intrigued. "Should I be asking you where you're going?"

Beca looked apologetic. "I'm sorry Frank, I need to get to lower Manhattan in," Beca looked at her watch, "15 minutes."

"Lower Manhattan? You do realise where we are right?" a wide-eyed Frank asked.

"Yes, and hence I really have to go. I will be back by 2; go have yourself a nice lunch, okay? I'm so sorry Frank." And just like that Beca ran out of the studio, leaving in the room a very confused Frank Ocean and his entourage.

"Was that… Was that a bicycle helmet?"
