Chapter Six:
J.J. was tempted to call Reid during the day to see how he was doing but thought better of it. He might think she was worrying over nothing. There were demons on the loose in his body, but Simms assured them they were still in the "plotting" stage.
At the end of the day, J.J. sat back and let out a contented sigh. As tedious as a day of nothing but paperwork could be, the idea of going home and cooking for her boys compared to questionable takeout at a police station sounded quite appealing. It would be nice to go home and have nothing to worry about.
Simmons had already left to be with his family, so she waved to Alvez and Lewis as she left. She nodded to Prentiss on her way out the door. Sometimes she thought she worked too hard but that was a discussion for another time. The elevator door closed just as she caught a glimpse of Rossi approaching it. Everyone was leaving on their own schedule today.
To her surprise, she saw a figure standing against her car. She began to reach for her gun, when she realized it was just Reid. His hair was spiked up and his coat was open despite the cold.
He smiled at her in a way that slightly unnerved her when he saw her approaching.
"Hello J.J.," he said slowly with an uncharacteristically wide grin.
"Hey, Spence," she said trying to sound casual. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm here to see you J.J." he said. "The girl of my dreams."
Something told her to stop. She recalled Ruby's words of warning about demonic possession.
"When's Henry birthday?" she asked.
Reid turned and approached her. She could see his collar was flipped up and the top of shirt was partially unbuttoned. His grin had soured slightly.
"Why?" he asked suspiciously.
"I always get his and Michael's mixed up," she made up anxiously.
"It's a good thing I always liked your looks instead of your brains," he said.
J.J. instantly knew this was the demon talking and not Reid. She noticed his eyes had a slight green tint to them. They were also hungry and made her shiver.
"I need to get going," she said trying to sound casual. "Dinner won't cook itself."
"The only place you're going is with me," he said with more authority than she had ever heard him use.
He suddenly grabbed her and swung her into his embrace. He leaned in and forced his tongue nearly down her throat. J.J. grabbled blindly and hit the alarm button for her car. It stunned him long enough for her step away and run to the car.
"You won't get far!" He screamed. "I'll get what's mine eventually."
She quickly got in, dialed Simms, and put it on speaker phone.
"J.J. what's wrong?" she asked.
She tried not to cry as she put the car in gear.
"Reid kissed me on the mouth," she said tightly.
She glanced out the windows and saw Reid was nowhere to be seen.
"I am so sorry J.J." she said. "I honestly thought we had more time."
"His eyes had a green tint to them," J.J. said as she steered the car out of the lane. "Will that help you identify the demon?"
"It will help me narrow it down," she said.
As she turned into traffic. She recognized the car behind her.
"Can demons drive?" she asked desperately.
"They can take control of their hosts like that, yes."
"But driving is hard," J.J. argued fitfully.
"Not if the host is smart enough."
She laughed harshly. "His big brain is being used against him."
"Unfortunately."
"What do I do?" she asked.
"Lead him to my place and I'll trap him there."
"How?" J.J. asked.
"I am working on it as we speak."
J.J. made the appropriate turns to get in the direction of Reid's and Simms's apartments. Looking out her windows, she noticed Reid was only a few spaces behind.
"How is he driving so carefully?" she asked. "I thought demons were full of reckless rage."
"They can be very patient when necessary to achieve a goal," Simms said.
"How are you so calm?" she asked.
"I've been fighting demons since I was a ten," she said. "Everyone once and a while my mom and I would encounter an actual demon and I would manage to spout off enough random spells memorized from my grandmother's books to keep the creature at bay while we ran."
"Sounds like a rough upbringing," J.J. said. "Do you mind if I ask about your dad?"
"He was a C-list action star in the eighties who I never met. My mom said it was a 'spiritual one-night stand,' which never made much sense to me. He died of a drug overdose in the early nineties. We tried to communicate with his ghost, but for once my mom could actually tell the guy wanted nothing to do with us."
"I'm sorry," J.J. said.
"Don't be. It has been my experience J.J. that demons of metaphorical nature are woven in a way that puts almost all of us on equal footing in terms of having made some aspect of our lives tragic."
J.J. thought about her sister briefly.
"I think you're right."
Soon, she was pulling into the lot assigned to Reid's apartment.
"I'm here," she said.
"Try not to freak out when you me," Simms said.
"What?"
"I'll call tomorrow. Get out of the car and hide until you see me with him, then get out of here."
"Okay," she said. "I'm hanging up."
"This will work out, I promise."
J.J. hung up and got out of the car. She hid behind one a short distance from hers. She saw Reid pull up and get out of the car. He had a hungry look on his face.
"Spence?" a voice said out loud.
It sounded so much like her, for half a second J.J. thought it might be.
"J.J." Reid said delightedly. "Now you look smoking!"
"Don't you know smoking takes years of your life?"
"I do now!"
J.J. dared to look and instantly wished she hadn't.
Simms was wearing a blond wig and a version of what she typically wore except with nearly all the buttons undone. It must of have been something in the makeup or a potion (or both), but her facial structure even looked identical to J.J.'s.
It's a glamour spell J.J. RUN!
J.J. realized Simms had spoken to her telepathically. She silently creeped back into her car and pulled out. The thought of looking back made her sick so she kept her eyes on the road and drove home.
She needed to call the team. But she was afraid. Afraid of what they would think of Reid after this even though none of it was his fault. She was also worried about whether they would continue to trust Simms even as she just proved again, the lengths she was willing to go to protect people she barely knew. This whole situation was even more complicated than she imagined.
J.J. decided to put off calling the team until after Simms called in the morning. There wasn't much they could do aside from worry and let their minds drift to dark places. It was best to let the witch do her job.
