16th January
"I'll get it" Bill called out from the living room, when the doorbell rang at 5:30pm on a Saturday evening.
"Mom? Dad I wasn't expecting you" Bill said, opening the door to find his parents.
"We're here to look after the kids for the evening" Evelyn told Bill, walking straight past him into the house.
"But Laura and I don't have anything planned for tonight" Bill replied confused.
"I know, but you and Laura haven't spent any time together, just the two of you, since before Katie was born, so I've booked you a table at a new restaurant at town for six-thirty".
"That sounds like a really good idea, I'll go tell Laura" Bill replied, just as Lee came running down the stairs with his arms out towards his grandfather.
"Hey" Bill said walking upstairs to find Laura changing Katie's nappy.
"Hi, did I hear your parents downstairs?" she asked buttoning Katie's sleeper up and lifting her from the changing table.
"Yeah, they've come over to look after the children tonight, so we can go out to dinner and spend some time by ourselves" Bill replied taking Katie from Laura and kissing the side of the infant's head.
Laura went silent for a moment, mulling the idea over in her head before saying "I think it would be a good idea. I hate leaving Katie, but I like the thought of having some alone time with you, without any interruptions".
"Great it's settled then. They've booked us a table in town at seven, so that'll give us half an hour to get ready and twenty minutes for the drive" Bill replied smiling.
"You look pretty Mommy" Lee told Laura when she came into the living room where Lee, Zak and Joseph were playing a board game, wearing an off white cocktail dress with silver detailing and a sheer neckline and sleeves.
"Thank you buddy" Laura said kissing the top of his head and ruffling his hair.
"Are you ready to go?" Bill asked Laura walking into the living room with Katie in his arms, Evelyn following closely behind.
"Yeah I think so. I changed and fed Katie half an hour ago, so she should be fine until nine, and there's two bottles, I pumped earlier, in the fridge, just in case she gets hungry early" Laura replied mentally running through a checklist in her head.
"We should be fine, the casserole I brought over should be ready in twenty minutes, then we're just going to play games and watch a movie, aren't we boys?" Evelyn said smiling reassuringly at Laura.
"Be good" Bill told the boys, before placing Katie in Evelyn's arms.
"Off you go and have fun" Evelyn said waiving Katie's hand at them goodbye.
"I'm glad we decided to take your parents up on their offer" Laura said once they were seated at a quiet romantic table.
"Me too and you look absolutely gorgeous" Bill replied his eyes admiring the way her dress brought out her green eyes.
Laura blushed and said "thank you", tucking her hair behind her ear and looking down at her menu.
"What do you feel like?" Bill asked Laura, "want to share an entrée or just have mains and dessert?"
"Yes, that sounds good to me. I was thinking of getting the duck and maybe we could share the antipasto platter?"
"Yeah that looks good, I think I'll go for the eye fillet" Bill said closing his menu and motioning towards the waiter, to indicate they were ready to order.
"What can I get for you?" the waiter asked, pulling out his notepad.
"Could we please have the antipasto platter to start, and then the duck and eye fillet for mains" Bill said handing the waiter their menus.
"Thank you" Laura told the waiter before turning to Bill and smiling as she told him "so for our wedding, Marcy's managed to get us the ball room at her friend's hotel, on the waterfront, for our reception".
"That's great, I'm glad we've got both our ceremony and reception booked, and my Dad's agreed to officiate the wedding, now we just have to worry about all the smaller details" Bill said clasping her hand in his.
"Speaking of, I was thinking we could go with peach, coral and light grey for our wedding colours, what do you think?" Laura asked hesitantly.
"Sounds good to me, I just want us and our family to have a great day" Bill replied kissing the top of her hand.
"I love you".
"I love you too".
At 10:30pm Bill and Laura arrived back home to find Evelyn and Joseph in the living room, watching TV, while Evelyn rocked a still wide awake Katie.
"Aaaaaak" Katie squealed in excitement at the sound of her parent's voices.
"How's my baby girl?" Laura said, scooping up the little girl from Evelyn's arms, and kissing the infant on the cheek.
"She's been wonderful, as have the boys. We had dinner, played a board game and then watched a movie, with the boys in bed by 8pm. Katie finished her bottle half an hour ago, however I think she knew her parents were coming back soon, because she's wanted to play ever since" Evelyn told Laura and Bill.
"Thank you for looking after them tonight, it was nice to spend some time together without any distractions from the children" Bill said smiling and taking a babbling Katie from Laura's arms.
"Anytime, we love spending time with our grandchildren" Joseph replied sincerely, running his hand over the top of Katie's head.
"The phone's ringing" Laura told Bill, rolling over in bed and poking him in the side to wake him up.
"Who's calling at 3am in the morning…..Hello?" Bill answered not recognising the number.
"Yes this is he…Okay, I'll be there in fifteen minutes" Bill said before hanging up the phone and turning towards Laura, "that was the police department, Carolanne has been arrested and is asking for me".
"What happened?" Laura asked now fully awake.
"I don't know, they wouldn't tell me the charges" Bill replied sighing as he got out of bed and headed towards the walk in robe.
"Okay, I'll stay here and look after the kids, let me know if you need anything" Laura said coming to stand beside him and wrapping her arms around him in a quick hug.
"Will do, if I'm not back by the time the boys wake up, just tell them I had to take care of something, I don't want to get them involved until I know what's happening" Bill replied and kissed her on the cheek.
"I'm Bill Adama, I got a call that Carolanne Adama was asking for me" Bill told the guard, walking up to the front counter.
The guard scanned a list below him and said "follow me please", before grabbing a set of keys and opening the door for Bill.
"She's in here" the guard said walking down the short hallway and opening the door to the cell on the left.
"Bill" Carolanne said, racing forward from the cell bed to hug him, before looking behind him and asking "where are the boys?"
"It's 3am, I left them at home with Laura" Bill told her. At her stricken look he added "you've been gone without any contact for six months, the boys don't need you disrupting the lives they've created at the moment. Their happy and doing well. Lee told me what it was like living with you and now the boys see Laura as their mother, plus the courts awarded us full custody".
"What? How could they do that" Carolanne replied angrily.
"Because you disappeared and now you've been charged with drug possession and trafficking, this is serious Carolanne. I'm not going to put the boys in a position where they'll get hurt" Bill said seriously.
"You've got to help me Bill. When I ran away, I met this guy in a bar and he was buying me a lot of drinks. He told me he could make me a lot of money. After seeing how happy you and a Laura were, I just wanted someone to love me, so when he asked me to help him out I did, and he was so thankful afterwards that I kept helping him" Carolanne told Bill.
"You'll likely get jail time and a judge will probably want you to go to rehab as well. I'll come back tomorrow" Bill said.
