"Cannonball!"
SPLASH!
"Jojo!"
"Sorry…"
The group groaned and looked at their now soaking clothes. "You guys were gonna get in the water anyway! I don't see what you're so upset about!" Jojo argued.
"Not all of us were," Katherine answered, looking down at her soaking dress. "Sorry, Kath," Jojo mumbled.
The group had gotten up somewhat early and had headed to the nearest Walmart, bought Jojo a swimsuit, then headed for the lake. Getting ready to head for the lake had proven to be a more difficult task than it should've been. First, Albert and Henry hid Race and Swift's towels, then Josie had a blowout and had to have a bath (which she was not happy about), then Finch almost accidently set the kitchen on fire when he was trying to make some toast, and finally they almost couldn't find Les or Buttons, who had locked themselves in the basement by accident.
"C'mon, Josie, let's go swimmin'," Jack said, taking the baby. Josie giggled as Jack ran towards the water and she clung to her father as he jumped in. Thankfully, it wasn't very deep, but Josie didn't appreciate the cold water.
She began fussing unhappily until Jack walked around for a little bit. The boys ended up distracting the one year old from the coldness of the water, but Katherine still brought her back inside so she didn't get sick.
"Let's play Chicken!" Romeo suggested giddily.
A few of them groaned, but the rest cheered happily. The ones that didn't want to play went to a found a rope to swing into the lake on while the ones that did want to play paired up.
"How do you play Chicken again?" Swift asked as she hesitantly climbed on Race's shoulders.
"Two people get on two other people's shoulders. The first one to know the top person off wins," Davey explained. He decided to be ref, not wanting to take part of what could sometimes be a dangerous game.
"First up: Les and Jojo versus Buttons and Henry!" Jack said, in a dramatically low 'announcer' voice. Jojo and Henry circled each other while the watching kids cheered and egged the boys on.
"You're going down, short stuff!" Buttons grinned.
"Buttons, you're an inch taller than me," Les giggled.
"And you're an inch shorter!" Buttons laughed.
The boys laughed at their pathetic trash talking, then began. Les, who'd only played the game once before, lost in a matter of seconds.
Next was Crutchie and Jack versus Buttons and Henry.
Crutchie won that round, and lasted two more before losing to Romeo and Elmer. Romeo and Elmer were the reigning champs for quite a few rounds, then Race and Jack beat them easily.
"Dave, isn't there a rule against two older boys pairing together?" Elmer asked.
Davey shrugged. "I dunno. I didn't know about this game until you guys dragged me and Les into it in June at that pool."
"Oh yeah! That was when Elmer tried to do a flip off the diving board and nearly got himself a concussion!" Jack commented with a chuckle. It was funny now, but it definitely wasn't then.
The game continued for a while with surprisingly no fights or injuries. They only quiet when Albert wasn't watching where he was going when he swung in on the rope and accidently tackled Swift and Race.
"You guys ok?" Davey asked as the they reached the surface. Race and Albert coughed a little before nodding.
"Where's Swift?" Crutchie asked.
Race turned and noticed his girlfriend wasn't above the water yet. "Swift?" he called, looking around.
"SNEAK ATTACK!"
Swift leapt out from the water and tackled the Race and Albert into the water, making the two boys scream in fear.
They all resurfaced, coughing up water and laughing. "Nice one, kid. Just don't scare us like that again," Jack laughed.
Everyone went back inside for some dinner. After an uneventful dinner, they decided to break out some board games. "So what games did you guys bring?" Davey asked. "Uhh, Twister, Sorry, Battleship, and I think there's some cards in here for card games," Albert said, looking through the bag that they'd stuffed the games in.
"Let's play Twister!" Sniper suggested.
While the boys set the game up, Katherine sat next to Swift and Josie escaped her mother's grip. She began wobbly walking over to her father. Her parents froze.
The boys and Swift noticed the change in behavior and looked at each other. "Um, guys? What's wrong?" Davey asked, semi-worriedly.
Josie reached her father and Katherine's hands flew to her mouth as tears filled her eyes. "Those were her first steps! She just walked for the first time!" Jack said in disbelief.
It took a second, but soon the boys exploded. They congratulated their niece, who got overwhelmed by all the shouting and began crying.
After she calmed down, they spent the rest of the night playing games and having Josie walk two each of them. It was the best weekend ever.
