AN: Prompt number 16 from the 100 challenge - "Questioning". I'm just borrowing the characters - I'll put them back when I've finished.

I've always had to have an explanation for everything, a reason. I never just accept things the way they are – I need to know why. I can't help it, that's just the way I am. It drives my friends crazy, and sometimes me when I'm struggling with something, but it isn't a habit I can change. More than that – I wouldn't want to change it. I'm happy just the way I am.

They'd be surprised, though, if they heard about my secret relationship. It's the one thing I've never tried to explain, because I can't. It simply doesn't make sense – it's illogical in every way I can imagine. There's an infatuation though, and it's completely mutual. For once, that's all I need to know.

Ginny Weasley told me once that opposites attract. Maybe that's true, but it doesn't fit the scenario because he and I aren't opposites, not really. Oh, on the surface it fits – mudblood and pureblood, Gryffindor and Slytherin – but underneath… Underneath all of that, we're more similar than I could ever have expected. Nobody looks beneath the surface though, usually.

I know, and he knows, that none of it makes sense – we're supposed to be enemies. We pretend, whenever we meet in public, that we hate each other. That's entirely expected. He makes rude comments, and I generally choose to glare at him. What nobody else knows is what we do at night, when I can fall into his arms and forget about everything else that's going on around us. I'm there for one reason, and one reason only – just because I want to be. I don't need to understand it, I've realised, just enjoy it while it lasts, because it may not last forever. Maybe one day we can stop pretending to the world, and they can ponder how and why Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy got together. There isn't a reason, I could tell them. It just happened.
