AN: Prompt 67 from the 100 challenge - "Playing the melody". Couldn't have something about music without putting Demyx and Zexion in, could I? They're not mine, by the way.

Demyx sighed as he scrawled the last two lines of the song onto the page. It had been a month since he'd written anything even vaguely cheerful, and he knew, though he wouldn't admit, the reason. A month ago, his best friend, Zexion, had called needing a place to stay for a while. Demyx, of course, had offered him a room. Nothing unusual about that, perhaps, but Demyx was secretly in love with his friend and had been for quite some time. Zexion had, unknowingly, inspired some of Demyx's most well-known songs.

"Why so miserable, Demyx?"

"I'm not sure I like this song."

"The one you've been working on for the last week?" Demyx nodded. "Let's hear it."

He hesitated. That wasn't normal – he usually couldn't wait to play his new songs for anyone who was prepared to listen. This time, though, he wasn't sure.

"Is it that bad, Demyx?"

"Just… somewhat depressing."

"Play it."

Zexion hadn't exactly given him much of a choice, so he picked up the guitar and began. The music calmed him down, as it always had. When the song came to an end, he wanted to hear Zexion's opinion, but was afraid to ask for it.

"It's obviously about someone specific. Do I know them?"

"You, er… could say that, yes." He couldn't meet Zexion's eyes, and that may have been what gave it away.

"Me?"

This time, Demyx looked up. There was no disgust on Zexion's face, just curiosity and a little bit of hopefulness. "You."

"Why didn't you just tell me?"

"I thought you'd hate me for it."

"I couldn't ever hate you, Demyx."

"So, can I ask what you thought of the song, now?"

"It sounds like it came from the heart."
