Friends and Enemies
After J.R and Gus got back to their bike, they went another way just in case the police recognized the bike.
Like any other city, New York was full of stores, malls, parks, restaurants and all kinds of buildings. The streets were full of cars and the sidewalks full of people. Everywhere people were trying to get to where ever they needed to be.
That's the thing about cities, no matter what time it is, it's always full of people, either driving or walking.
Driving in a place with a lot of people was very hard for Gus. He couldn't let anyone see him. He was trying to blend in with the bike between the handle bars. Trying was the key word. His red hair stood out way too much and it didn't help that he couldn't hang on to anything, he kept slipping to the sides. He actually preferred J.R's shoulder, but people will see him a mile way on J.R's white shirt. When they stopped at a red light. Gus saw a store's display of mannequins at his right. What he saw gave him an idea.
"As much as I hate stealing …" Gus said, looking back at J.R. "I have no choice here". He said snapping his fingers. An instant a leather jacket appeared on J.R with the zipper half way up. J.R looked at the new piece clothing that he was wearing and than at Gus.
Gus could tell, even if he couldn't see through his helmet, J.R was looking at him with a raised eyebrow. Gus climbed up and got inside the leather jacket. His head popped out of the jacket and looked straight up at J.R.
"This way I won't fall and nobody will see me." Gus said with a satisfied smile.
J.R just shook his head.
Somewhere far away…
Inside a pitch dark room where you couldn't see a thing. The only thing you could see was a blue glowing crystal ball in the center of the room. A set of blue eyes were watching J.R and Gus through the crystal ball.
"So, this is the guy they want me to take care of." Said a voice, narrowing its eyes while staring at the figure on the motorcycle.
After a few minutes of watching the man in the crystal ball, it spoke again.
"This should be very interesting." It said this time smiling.
"Can you tell why we're in a museum again" Gus said, looking very bored.
As Gus said, they were inside a museum walking through the halls. The walls were all white with paintings on them. The whole entire floor was covered in a red carpet. Like any other museum, it had a number of old artifacts in every room.
J.R was walking through each room, holing his helmet upside down with Gus inside.
In each room he entered, he didn't stay to long. J.R just scanned the room for a few seconds and left.
Gus at the other hand was very bored. He laid his head on his hands, not interested on the beautiful art work in front of him.
"Are you going to answer me or what?" Gus said with a yawn.
"We're here to find out if this place has the Timous Lectar" J.R said, walking into another room.
"Ok, first of all…what hell is a Timous Lectar? And second, why do you need it?" Gus asked, now looking a bit interested.
"It's a small blue crystal." J.R answered while going up the stairs to the second floor.
"Why do you need it?" Staring at J.R's dead eyes with a confused face.
J.R stopped walking and stared at ground with a far away look on his face. "I need it to…" He said slowly and went silent.
Gus immediately understood what it was for.
"I take that you found out about the Timous Lectar on the Macuros." Gus said, now being serious.
Gus was an easy going guy most of the time, but he knew when to stop joking when it came to serious matters.
He has known J.R for two years now and the first time he met him, he knew that he was a person who had been through a lot.
Gus could tell J.R was a person who has been alone for some time. He never saw him with friends or family. J.R almost never smiled and the rare times that he did, it was small and for a short amount of time. For the longest time that he has known him, his eyes have always been that way, empty, emotionless, with no warmth in them. He assumed that something really bad happened, more specifically to his family. Whatever happened to them most have been real bad to make him the way he was.
Over the two years they been together, he grew to like J.R even when he acted like a jerk. When he found out what J.R was planning on doing, he was reluctant at first, but thought that he wouldn't actually go through with it. That was why he was very surprised when he found out that he actually stole the Macuros. He still was very uneasy about all this, but J.R was a good friend and he knew, even if J.R never said it, he considered him a good friend too. As much as he didn't like this, he will still help him reach his goal, because that's what friends do.
After searching the entire museum, they ended up on the last room they hadn't check yet, on the third floor.
Like the other rooms, the walls were white with full of paintings and the floor with a red carpet
There eyes weren't focused on the art though, but at the glass case in the middle of the room. Inside it, there was a silver necklace with a blue crystal. The crystal was only an inch big.
"Well, we found it…now what?" Gus asked, still looking at the necklace.
J.R took his gaze of the crystal and looked down at the small person inside his helmet.
Gus looked back at him, and knew exactly what his was thinking.
"Let me guess, you're going to steal aren't you" Gus said with a disapproving look.
J.R's eyes went back to the crystal for a few more seconds. "Come on lets go" J.R said, turning around, leaving the room. "I coming back tonight"
"Well, count me in"
J.R stared at Gus with a face that could barley pass as a surprised look.
"Yeah I know it's me, but…"
Gus looked straight at J.R's eyes with a look of determination that he had never seen before, it made him stop on his tracks.
"Do you remember when we first met?" He asked, but didn't give him a chance to answer.
"When I first saw you, my first thought about you was that you were just some other jerk that didn't care about anyone but himself. But when I was in trouble and was inches away from death. You came and saved me, ME a total stranger." Gus stared at the ground and began to sound sad, but kept going.
"When I had no one, you were the only one that helped me." He took a breath and continued. "After that day I promised myself, if you ever needed help I would be there for you, just like you were there for me." Gus said very determined, looking back at him.
J.R had a blank face, you couldn't tell what he was thinking. It seemed he was about to say something, he stayed silent.
"I…I need to go somewhere" He said quietly and started to walk again.
Back in the dark room with the crystal ball.
There was a group of people in front of a man with a vey familiar set of blue eyes.
"We assume you accepted our request" A voice said.
"I usually don't like making deals with people who put a bounty on my head" The man said, sounding annoyed.
"That's why the wizard council has agreed to remove your bounty if you accomplish this task." The voice said, referring to the group of people behind him.
"I'm still wondering why the wizard council would be making a deal with a guy like me" The blue eyes narrowed, watching the group of wizards very cautiously.
"I'm sure you head wizards could deal with one guy by yourselves." He continued, watching their every move.
"That man" The person who was speaking pointed at the crystal ball. "Took something very important from us" He began to sound irritated. "We cannot let anyone know that one wizard, single handedly, stole from the most powerful wizards in the world. If we take matters to our own hands, the public will surely know about it."
"So, that's were I come in, right?"
"You guys need someone who will take care of this quietly" Beginning to understand.
The person who was doing all the talking was becoming inpatient. "What's your answer, yes or no?
The man broke out of his deep thought and looked back at the council. He stared at them for a couple of moments and then turned his back to them, facing the crystal ball.
"Yeah, I'll take it" he said.
The council members began to relax, except for one who seemed to become very worried. He didn't agree at all with what the council was doing.
"But" the wizards, who finally relaxed became stiffen again, glued their eyes back to the person with blue eyes.
"I want to know one thing" the man said.
"And what would that be?"
"What is his name?" he asked. His eyes never leaving the person inside the crystal ball.
The wizard council began stared at each other, confused by the sudden question. The council man turned back at figure watching the crystal ball.
"His name?" He questioned, trying to figure out why he would want to know.
When he didn't answer he decided just to tell him.
"His name is…"
