To say the least, Laney was dreading the next day at school. Not to be stereotypical or anything, but, yeah, school was hell.

To be fair, nobody ever really loved school, but to be fair for Laney, being punched and shoved into lockers on a daily basis wasn't exactly enjoyable either. Not to be stereotypical or anything, but, yeah, school was hell. Absolute hell.

But maybe the devil was on her side that day, because as she walked into school, an arm was thrown around her slim shoulders, pulling her body into the side of a body she couldn't recognize, as her face was shoved into their clothed armpit.

"Laney! Just the girl I was looking for!" A sweet voice chimes, thick strands of hair mushing into Laney's face. Laney is starstruck.

The girl who apparently hated her, loathed her even, was looking for her. Laney, of all people. Also, she was pretty beautiful. Not that Laney would admit that or anything. She wasn't gay. She's not. She's not. She likes boys.

With stars in her sea green eyes, Laney lets herself be dragged down the beige hallway, blue hair covering her own and a sweet melody playing into her ears.

"So what do you think?" Carrie asks, looking Laney in the eyes.

Laney snaps out of her perfume-induced trance, shaking her head and biting her lip, before realizing that Carrie asked her a question. She flushes red. "Um, pardon?"

Carrie chuckles and rolls her blue eyes, smiling slightly. "I asked if you wanted to become my new best friend? Cool, right?"

Laney quirks an eyebrow. "What happened to Kim and Konnie?"

Carrie chuckles again, playing with Laney's red hair. "They're dead weight. I mean, they're cool and all, but they're not best friend material. I thought me and you could hand out some more, yeah?"

"First of all, it's "you and I". Proper grammar is key, Carrie Beff. And, um, don't you hate me? You know, what with you dating Corey Riffen and him pouring punch on me?"

Carrie laughs again. Laney notices that's a reoccurring theme with this girl, like she's looking down on Laney. Like she's a child. "That's old news. Corey's stupid, he doesn't understand anything. So, what do you think? Best friends?"

Laney bites her lip again. If she doesn't say yes, Carrie will make her school life even worse than it already is. Maybe this friend thing could be a bit of a benefit to her anyways, right? She is the most popular girl in the school. "Fine, you got me, Beff. Best friends."

And if half the reason Laney decides to be her friend is because of how pretty she is, nobody has to know but her.

XXXX

Laney trudges over to the closet, swinging open the door and clutching a hand to her chest when Larry stands there, hands in his hair, pacing the floor.

He looks stressed, comically so, but, at the same time, worryingly, and Laney walks over, turning him to facing her, calming him down slightly.

"Hey, Larrs, are you okay? You seem stressed. Is something up?"

He nods his head, pulling on his lip with his thumb and forefinger, clutching his hands together in a nervous manner.

"Lanes, I have something to tell you."
