Chapter 7: Consequences

Chapter Summary: She was doomed! Her grandmother was going to be the new coach of Seigaku Tennis club. Her secret was in turmoil.

"I would like you to meet our new coach," He said pointing at their coach who was wearing a pink t-shirt and white pants and looking all strict in front of them;

"Miss Ryuzaki Sumire."

"Yo! Seigaku teammates, Ryuzaki Sumire yoroshiku!" Sumire said catching their attention for her sudden appearance, "I've been coaching tennis and also a math teacher in America for three years so I'll be expecting a lot from you this year as well."

The others replied to her while the others were thinking that something was odd. Momo was the first one to notice it;

"R-Ryuzaki? As in Ryuzaki?" Momo muttered as he cupped his chin, "Where did I hear that name before?"

Eiji closed his eyes and looked down, "Yeah, I knew I heard of it too," He muttered as everyone was thinking of it as well. Then, realization hit him, "Ah! Masaka—" He slowly looked at a particular person with them.

Ryoma's eyes widened as well. He realized it and he was the one to notice it. Why? He had been calling her to her surname. He looked at her as everyone slowly did the same thing.

Sakuno who was seriously sweating at the very moment was looking at their coach. Her eyes widened as she couldn't believe what was happening. O-Obaa-chan? W-what is she doing here? She panicky thought as her brain was raking for something to calm herself down. She wasn't even aware that Sumire was looking at her at that moment.

"Ryuzaki Jerry!"

Upon hearing that, she immediately looked at their coach and was totally shocked to see her reaction, "H-hai!"

The regulars snickered at her reaction while Ryoma just looked at her.

"Come here for a minute."

She stiffened at first and she didn't know what to do. She only walked when Ryoma tugged her to her side. Good thing that Ryoma was beside her or else she would remain a solid rock at her location.

D-did Obaa-chan recognize me? W-what will I do? I—I'm doomed. S-she would scold me for this. Mou! She thought as she slowly walked in front of her. Good thing that she was able to put an act despite the worries that she had. She was indeed worried at that very moment. Her grandmother was pretty strict when it came to her. She would be punished really hard.

She was in front of Sumire as she stopped thinking. She looked at her with enough courage and secretly wished something. Please, don't let her recognize me if that is possible and if it is please let her forgive me for this. I promise I won't do this again. I promise that I—.

"You stupid boy!" Sumire suddenly said cutting her from her worried thoughts when she knuckled her hard to both sides of her head, "Why didn't you tell me that you were going to enroll in an all boys' school!"

"O-ouch! T-that hurts!" She closed her eyes as she was receiving the pain from her head. The others sweat dropped at that scene between them. Ryoma looked down as he smirked while Fuji chuckled.

"I can't believe that you did this!" Sumire looked at her with a warning tone. She was no longer holding her.

Sakuno just looked at her and felt embarrassed after that, "G-gomen, Obaa-chan."

"Obaa-chan?" Momo heard her say that, "Could it be…"

Sakuno panicked once again. Of course they didn't know. No wonder that she was worried about it. Before she could explain Sumire did it for her.

"Yeah, as you know that our surname is the same, this boy here is my grandson," She said placing a hand to her head, "I never expected to see him here after all."

"Maji?" Eiji said then looked at her, "You mean; you enrolled here without asking for her permission?"

"S-seems like it," As if Obaa-chan will allow me to go here. She continued in her thoughts, "I went here with my own accord."

Everyone murmured when she explained that to them. Sumire then clapped her hands to get their attention;

"Interrogations done! Now get back to practice and let me observe everyone!"

"Hai!" They started moving with Tezuka leading them. Sakuno was about to fall in line when Sumire tapped her and whispered something to her ear.

"I am not done with you yet."

Sakuno sweat dropped when she heard that. She had to expect that coming from her. Before she could say anything, Sumire gently pushed her to get in line. Good thing that Sumire hid her real identity although she was shocked that she did that. Well, she was safe… for now.

Their little whispering thing didn't escape to Ryoma as he stared at them. He saw the girl's reaction and he knew that she was indeed nervous about it. He secretly smirked as he too went to practice.

Like the youngest tennis prodigy, the tensai also saw that between them and thought the same thing. Things are getting interesting. He said before he joined the others… to run laps.

Later on:

"Cherry-chan, I never imagined that you would do the impossible, nya!" Eiji said panting after the series of laps. They were saved from drinking Inui juice in just the nick of time much to the latter's dismay. Miraculously, they all reached the last lap together and she with the great effort to catch up with them; was able to.

Sakuno just sweat dropped when he said that. If they only knew… she already did the impossible.

"How is she as a teacher?" Kawamura said.

"Yeah, is she strict?" Momo continued.

"I think she's a bit scary." Eiji said making weird faces.

"I guess not, she's fine for me." Kawamura looked at Eiji.

"What about Mathematics?" Horio asked as well.

"Tell us, Cherry-chan!" The duo chorused.

Sakuno couldn't answer their questions as they were leaning closer to her, "E—err… I…"

"Guys, you shouldn't fret him like that," Oishi said trying to stop them, "How can he answer if you are leaning that close to him?"

"Fsssh… idiots." Kaidoh murmured this time.

Fuji and Ryoma remained quiet all the time as they watched them while resting.

"Right, let's give him a little distance." Eiji said as he properly sat… just… in front of her, "How is it?"

Sakuno sweat dropped as well as the other regulars sweat dropped as well. At least she could answer them;

"Well, she's a great teacher since she was my math teacher before," She said trying to remember the old days when Sumire was teaching her, "But she could be strict sometimes but she's good."

They sighed after that. It seemed that she answered them what they expected her to answer.

"Why are you resting?" An authoritative voice got their attention. They looked at the direction where the voice was and saw their Captain standing near them, "Ten more laps."

They wore weird reaction but they didn't react. The more they reacted, the more laps they could get. Without saying another word, they started to stand up and ran another set of laps and this time, Tezuka joined them.

Inui was just scribbling something in his notebook as he observed them. It would make him happy as Tezuka let them have another lap. His concoction had another chance to be tasted once again.

After school:

They realized what kind of a teacher and coach Sumire was. She was indeed strict but good in her own way. They indeed enjoyed her training regimen. The practice smoothly ended that day and everyone went to their respected dorms.

…Except for one.

Sakuno was standing in front of Sumire's table in her office. Sumire was looking at her while she was looking down fidgeting all the time.

"A-are you… are you mad at me?"

Sumire placed her hands on top of the table and clasped them together, "What do you think?"

Sakuno looked at her and dejectedly replied, "I… I am sorry."

"What made you enroll in an all boys' school, Jerry?" She said staring at her, "I knew it was you when I saw your picture from the records."

She weakly smiled at her for the name that she called her. Then, she told her everything from the time Ryoma helped her from a group of thugs until yesterday when they saw her as a girl without being noticed. She told her everything, even the date.

"Hmmm," Sumire thought, "So you could have a little date with the tensai, huh?"

"Obaa-chan," She blushed as leaned closer to the table, "I only agreed so that he could keep my secret."

Sumire sighed as she became serious, "Even so, what you did was not nice. You are a girl, Sakuno."

"I—I know," She looked down, "B-but I… I am simply enjoying my stay here. They are nice to me."

"They are nice, yeah but will they still be nice if they discovered that you are a girl?"

"B-but…"

"You cannot change that fact that you lied to them."

Sakuno was aware of that but being heard those words from the other was still a shock to her. She felt guilty because she was lying to them, "I—I know that I lied to them. But I'll let them see me the real me, whether I disguise as a boy or not. I'll do anything for them to accept me."

"You cannot stay here for long and you know that," Sumire still insisted after a short silence, "The committee will soon know that my granddaughter is actually enrolled here. They would only think that I am spoiling you."

Sakuno looked down when she said that. Her grandmother had a point. Staying in the school for long was not good for her at least if she would keep her real identity that was. She also explained to her grandmother how she managed to enroll there with Tomoka's help as well.

"But…"

She looked up to see her grandmother considering of something. And she wasn't wrong about it when she continued;

"I guess I could hide your identity until the next school year."

Her eyes widened when Sumire said that, "Really?"

"But you have to be careful; you'll know the consequences of being a boy in school. You have to be aware of that—hey!"

"Arigatou Obaa-chan!" She said walking to her side and hugged her to her neck. She was indeed happy at that time that she forgot to speak like a boys', "Hontou ni Arigatou!"

"Cut that out and watch out with your feminine voice," Sumire said pulling her arms away from her, "I won't go easy on you. You are a boy after all." She said smirking at her.

She weakly smiled at her despite the blush after that. It was a good thing that Sumire allowed her to stay in the campus for ten more months. That was enough for her.

"What about your roommate, didn't he suspect of you?" Sumire said looking at her.

"No, he doesn't have any idea about my identity," She blushed really hard when she thought of him, "R-Ryoma-kun is really dense as I've observed him at the short span of time."

"I agree on you to that." Sumire sighed. She had been observing her team all day and she knew almost of them. At least, she knew the regulars at that moment. She had observed the amber eyes kid, the tensai, the data analyst, the acrobatic player, the first and second powerhouse player, the porcupine head, the mother hen and the Captain.

They had different personalities and that was why she could distinguish them.

"Still, you must be very careful," Sumire warned her, "He could be quiet but he's still a boy. So watch your attitude when you're around him."

"H-hai…"

"If you are worried, she could be my roommate instead, sensei."

Both of them looked at the last person who talked last. Sakuno was shocked when she saw Fuji walking towards them.

"F-Fuji-senpai, what are you doing here?"

Fuji shrugged before he answered, "I forgot something so I went to get it back but then I heard someone talking inside the club. I happened to hear the last line though."

"I see but no thanks," Sumire said imagining if she let her granddaughter share a room with a tensai, "Sakuno is safer to Echizen, presume."

"Saa, what do you mean by that?" He smiled as his eyes were still closed, "As If I would do something to her."

"That's my point," She said not really beating around the bush, "I observed how you teased the others whether it's a boy or a girl. That's not safe for my granddaughter."

"My, how mean." Fuji said although he didn't mean it.

"I am just stating the fact, besides," Sumire said as he stared at him, "I know that you are not serious when you said that."

"Saa… I wonder…" Fuji was indeed surprised that Sumire could read him like that. It was true that he was just joking. It would take necessary actions before he could shift to other rooms besides Tezuka would be pissed about it. Although, the Captain was already pissed being his roommate.

"But I entrust her secret to you," She said giving him a determined look, "It's much of a trouble but please do."

"It's alright with me," He smiled once again and then looked at the blushing girl, "As long as she dates me every month."

"S-senpai!" She reacted as she blushed really hard.

"Hai, hai." Fuji said raising his hands. His smile was still present… all the time.

Sumire chuckled and stood up, "Fuji can you escort her back to her dorm? I don't want her to get lost you know."

"Obaa-chan, mou!"

The two of them just chuckled before Fuji led her outside after bowing in front of the coach. She watched them leave the court from the window. She shook her head as she thought of her granddaughter. She couldn't believe that she let her stay for long. When she saw her sad look a while ago, she couldn't help but to spoil her a little more. No wonder that she gave in in the end.

I hope that everything would be fine.

Meanwhile:

"Arigatou, Fuji-senpai, for everything I mean." She said as they reached her dorm unit. She only whispered her words fearing that someone might hear her.

Fuji smiled at her and whispered, "Don't mention about it."

She blushed when he did that. Then she remembered what happened between to them yesterday. Fuji had kissed her on the cheek but that brought her an impact inside her system. She didn't realize that Fuji leaned away and looked at her blushing face.

"Well, go inside now," He said still smiling at her, "I'll see you tomorrow, Cherry-chan."

She followed him with her eyes as he left the area waving a hand in the process. She quickly recovered from the sudden shock and said, "Hai! Thank you again." She bowed after that.

xxx

She opened the door of their unit and saw her roommate juggling a tennis ball on his racket.

"Ryoma-kun, you know that it's forbidden to play inside the room, dorm rules?" She retorted as she sat to her own bed.

Ryoma looked at her before he looked back at what he was doing, "I am not actually playing, I am juggling."

"That's still playing you know." She said but Ryoma just ignored her. After a series of silence, she sighed as she collapsed to her bed.

"Did you get scolded?" Ryoma asked finally stopping from juggling.

Sakuno was shocked when he asked that but she didn't move from her position, "Y-yeah, it wasn't a nice thing for me to do."

"Hmmm," He replied as he stood up and went to the window, "Sakuno."

Her eyes widened when he uttered her name. She returned from sitting up and immediately looked at him, "W-what?"

"Ryuzaki Sakuno, your sister," He said looking at her, "Who's taking care of her then, when you two are not around?"

She stared at him for a while and secretly felt relieved. She thought that Ryoma knew her secret right there. But then, his question was unexpected, "W-well, you know Tomo-chan, my girlfriend? She's living with her even before Obaa-chan's in America."

"I see." Ryoma said and then walked back to his own bed. She thought that he was done asking but she was wrong. Totally wrong about it.

"Ne…"

"Hai…"

"Tell her that I'll meet her."

"E-eh?!"

"Next month."

She couldn't stop blushing at that moment and seemed to forget being a boy for the meantime, "W-why do you want to meet her?"

Ryoma gave her a questioning look as if she didn't know what he was asking, "I told you before, it would've been better if I meet her again."

She inwardly looked at him. Even though, it was embarrassed enough, she still asked him, "D-didn't you meet her yesterday?"

"How'd you know that?" He smirked at her this time.

Her eyes widened when he asked her that. Crap. She had forgotten that she was on a date with Tomoka as Jerry and not with Fuji. She looked away before she answered him;

"O-of course, I knew. She's my sister."

"I met her… on a date."

She looked down as she fidgeted, "I… guess so."

"It's decided then." With that he lied down to his own bed facing his back on her, "Oyasumi."

She was utterly shocked when he insisted of meeting her sister… meeting her at all. Next month? Her heart was beating so fast. She couldn't believe it. Ryoma wasn't interested in her, was he? He was a tennis freak as she observed him for the past month. He never paid attention to anything let alone to a girl before. That was pretty unbelievable of him. She looked at him as she thought of everything then, she realized something;

"Ah! Ryoma-kun!" She said standing up in the process and went to his bed, shaking him in the process, "It's only six in the evening. We haven't eaten our dinner yet! Wake up!"

The Next morning:

"Cherry-chan!"

She blinked twice at the boy who was standing in front of her, blushing actually, "W-what is it?"

The boy suddenly grabbed her hands and surprised her with his words, "I like you!"

His confession was loud that the entire room could hear it. They looked at them. Sakuno felt awkward when she received a confession for the first time.

"Please! Go out with me!"

"B-but I…" She blushed as well as she tried to pull her hands from him, "I—I am a boy too, you know."

"I don't care!" He leaned closer to her, "You are still cute for me!"

She twitched an eyebrow and sweat dropped as well. She couldn't believe that someone had confessed to her believing that she was a boy. That would make them gays. Then, she remembered what Tomoka said.

Be a man!

With that, she immediately pulled her hands away from him and retorted, "I am a boy!" With that she went inside their room.

"C-Cherry-chan!" He followed her inside. He was at a different class and her classmates were snickering at them. Just when Ryoma wasn't with her, something like that happened. She must be flattered that someone liked her but she didn't want it that way.

They thought that she was a gay or something.

The boy only stopped when their teacher appeared inside the class and shooed him away. It had been five minutes when Ryoma entered the room.

"Echizen-san, you're late… again."

"Gomen," He said sitting beside Sakuno, "There was a flying elephant that got injured and I tended to it."

The class started to laugh at his joke. Even Sakuno sweat dropped on it.

T-that was a lame excuse, Ryoma-kun.

The teacher closed his eyes and veins popped on his head, "Echizen-san, elephants don't fly. Don't make more excuses like that."

Ryoma looked at their teacher and obliviously asked him, "Isn't Dumbo a flying elephant?"

The class laughed even harder, creating more veins at the top of his head.

"Ryoma-kun, Dumbo isn't real. It's kid's fantasy." She whispered to him refraining to laugh.

Ryoma blinked at her," Hmmm," then a smirk grazed to his lips, "Is it?"

Sakuno was shocked at his reaction, "Y-you are mocking us!"

"Echizen-san, please read the whole text on page 23… in Japanese." The teacher with his eyes closed called up to him and was able to control his temper.

"Che," Ryoma said standing up. He looked at the page and frowned a little. The text was in English. Japanese was one of his weaknesses but that didn't mean he couldn't read it well. He was just lazy doing it, "This is more impossible that the flying elephants."

The class turned into a laughing stock because of Ryoma's not-so-lame comical reactions.

"Echizen-san, now!"

Later on:

The class did become serious after that. Well, after Ryoma apologized not so sincerely but he still did it. It was the last period when the teacher announced something.

"For the following months, we will have two special events, so be prepared for it."

The class murmured after he said that.

"Quiet! Listen to me." A student raised his hand and asked;

"What are those events, sensei?"

"Right," The teacher looked at them for a while before he replied, "The first is we will be going to have exchange students from different respective schools."

"Exchange students?"

"…From different schools?"

"I guess that's cool."

"And what's the second, sensei?"

"It is related to the first one. They will be here to experience the most famous school festival in Tokyo and that could be found here."

"Eeeh!"

"They will be joining clubs, fare, classes everything for the next three months," He said catching their attention once again, "So behave yourself and be a role model to them."

The class began talking to themselves. Some were pretty excited while some were nervous about it. They were pretty excited about the upcoming festival but entertaining the newcomers would be a little nervous to them. Of course they had to represent their school to them and that would be their first time doing it.

Sakuno was pretty excited about it as well. It was also her first time meeting new students from different schools. She looked to her side only to find Ryoma was actually bored at the said events. She secretly pouted when she saw him like that.

He's always like that to everything, except tennis.

5pm:

Practice ended a little early that day. They had been practicing for the upcoming festival even though it was a little ahead for them. Tezuka would always say that not practicing for a single session would only lessen their strength that they had. As much as they had time, he would encourage them to do their best, regulars or not. But since the practice ended early that day, she had a little chat with her grandmother for a little before the latter was being called for a sudden meeting. She decided to go to their unit and do her homework instead.

Ryoma wasn't with her so she probably thought that he must've been in the library to help or would be rallying somewhere. He could take his pick anyway. She was rampaging on her bag when she noticed something. She yanked it from her bag.

It was a manga book.

"I almost forgot, I never had a chance to look for him." She said as she observed the book. Then a memory returned to her at that very moment.

Flashback:

"I can't believe that I am going to be late on our date today." She said as she ran as fast as she could. Even Tomoka told her the right direction, she was still lost. She called Fuji and apologized. The tensai woud be meeting her at the central plaza instead where he thought that she could easily find him. She turned to a corner when she bumped into someone. She fell backward and landed pretty hard.

"T-that hurt." She whispered as she rubbed her bottom.

"I am sorry, are you alright?"

She looked at the person. It was actually a guy same age as her. He had red hair and gold eyes almost same like Ryoma's. But when she looked at them she thought that they changed color to grey.

"Miss?"

She flinched when he spoke again, "G-gomen ne," She said as she accepted his hand that was still offering to her.

The guy helped her stand up and was a total shock for him, "Wow, you are pretty light… for a girl?"

She blushed as she looked down, "U-ummm. Thank you…"

The guy grinned at her, "Don't mention it!" He then started walking away from her, "Well, got to go, I need to meet up with someone."

"A-ah," She took a step forward to reach out to him but she abruptly stopped as well. She noticed that she had stepped at something. She looked down and removed her foot from there. When she saw it, she picked it and looked at it, "A… manga?"

She looked ahead to see if she could see still him. But the guy was no longer there. She thought that she was missing something at that very moment;

"Ah! Fuji-senpai!" She felt stupid forgetting the date for a while. She put the book inside her bag and started running to where Fuji told her to.

Her thoughts brought her back to the present after that. She then looked at the manga that she was holding. She opened it up and read some lines;

"Hmmm, he likes detective stuff," She chuckled as she remembered something, "Just like Kikumaru-senpai."

She then put the manga back to her bag and grabbed another thing from her bag. It was a picture when she was twelve years old. She was wearing tennis attire that day for her grandmother asked for her to wear it.

It was three years ago before Sumire went to America and her being left alone with expenses.

"It seems like I am a different person than before." She whispered to herself as she looked at her picture. Her hair was braided into two pigtails and she was wearing a hairclip at the right side of her head. She missed her hair indeed and she couldn't believe that she sacrificed it for a boy.

"Sakuno…" She muttered to herself. She couldn't believe that she was uttering her own name. She knew that she wouldn't be able to use her own name as long as she was there. She had to be very careful.

…Really, really careful.

"It's exactly how I remember her."

She panicked when she someone talked behind her, leaning on her, "R-Ryoma-kun!" She was actually not facing the door all the time so she didn't notice when he entered the room. She immediately hid the picture from him, "Y-you are here?"

Ryoma ignored her question and peeked behind her, "Why are you hiding it?"

"W-what I am not hiding something?" She looked away as she turned her head around.

"Liar, I saw it," He said as he showed her his hand, "Let me see it."

Blush appeared on her face that time, "N-no way! W-why would you want to see it?"

"Isn't it bad to look at your sister's picture?"

"N-no, i-it's just that…" It's embarrassing. Y-you are looking at me. She thought last, "Still I won't."

"Show me." He insisted placing a knee to her bed this time leaning closer to her.

"R-Ryoma-kun!"

"Just a little." He said.

She closed her eyes as she stubbornly replied, "You will not make me!"

Ryoma frowned because of her stubbornness. He didn't say a word after that but he didn't leave his position, "Ah!"

Sakuno looked at him and wondered.

Ryoma pointed something at the window, "What's that?"

Sakuno being the oblivious followed what he was pointing at. Ryoma used that chance and moved to his sideways and swiftly grabbed the picture from her back. Sakuno was shocked at his sudden movement. As long as he got the picture, he leaned away from her and was about to leave her bed but Sakuno jumped on him, grabbing his hand and his shoulder in the process.

…Only to lose balance because of their uneven weight.

They fell on the floor creating a sound there. After the little commotion, silent arrived next. The picture slipped from Ryoma's grip and was slowly falling from a slow gravity… besides them.

Ryoma's back was on the floor while she was on top of him. Sakuno was holding his hand with her hand while she was gripping his shirt with the other. But their eyes were widened at that moment.

Yeah, their eyes were wide and who wouldn't?

…If their lips were connected to each other.

Sakuno immediately distanced herself from him and leaned her back to the side of her bed. Ryoma on the other hand was also shocked as well but he too was able to sit up, trying to register what had happened.

Sakuno was awfully blushing as she slowly reached for her lips. Both of her hand and lips were trembling. No one said a word. They were thinking about it. Neither of them was couldn't react and they could believe that, thinking that…

They… kissed?

Done! How was this chapter? It was really hard making the chapter now. Actually I don't know what to write next. So they kissed… accidentally. In Hana Kimi, the guy was drunk when he first kissed her but he didn't remember that he did that to her the next day so I changed that scene, a very new one. So how was it… please tell me thank you.

Dumbo – a classic Disney animated movie. A story of a little elephant that has big ears but later on, discovered the use of its ears. I think you already know that. Tee hee hee… The way Ryoma said his alibi was of boring tune. I hope you could imagine when he boringly said some words that he wasn't interested in. He didn't intend to joke that around. I don't own the Disney movie and never will.

I do not own Hana Kimi alright and never will.

Next chapter: The kiss, the Exchange Students and the Admirers
