The Dark Phantom:: Book One:: Growing Pains:: Chapter 4
19th Aug.
Danny walks along the sidewalk, giggling as Blue flitters around and through everything. The child gives a lopsided smile as he moves past the little light. It provides a harsh chime and flashes an intense red. The child just giggles more.
They're stopped when the child walks into someone. A young adult huffs out a laugh as the child staggers back a little. He looks up. A young woman with hair all over the place has her hand held out. A smile rests gently on her face.
"Hey, kiddo! Whatcha doing? Where your parents? And what's so funny?"
"Wha?"
He tilts his head and blinks at her. She huffs another laugh.
"Well, first, why are you giggling?"
"Angry Blue."
One of her eyebrows raise.
"You're walkin alone, kid, but I will admit that angry people are fun! Unless they have a weapon, then not so fun. Second, whatcha doing?"
He shrugs.
"Okay." She drawls, "Where're your parents."
"What parents?"
She jerks back a little, both eyebrows going up. "You know, your mom and dad?"
He just looks at her.
"Hey kid, how 'bou-"
An alarm rings out from her pocket. "SHIT I'M GONNA BE LATE!"
She starts to take off, then stops, turns, and states, "You should go home, kid." Then takes off running down the street.
Danny turns to Blue, blinks, then shrugs, and starts walking again.
20th Aug.
Once again, the small child is wandering down the street. This time arms spread wide, making a burr noise. Most that see the child shakes their head and keep walking. The child stops in front of the woman from yesterday.
She raises an eyebrow at him and places her hand on her hip. "Hey again. Your mom and dad with you this time?"
He squints up at her, a small frown on his face. "No."
"Do you have parents?"
"There grownups at home."
She smiles; it doesn't reach her eyes. Her head jerks towards the building she is in front of.
"Are you hungry? We keep some snacks on hand."
Danny smiles brightly and enthusiastically nods.
She huffs a laugh, her smile brightening, and opens the door.
"Come on in then. I'm Emily. What's your name?"
"Danny."
They walk into a dimly lit area. The cement floors making Emily's footsteps echo. She spreads her arms wide and turns to face Danny.
"Welcome to Julia's Autobody."
A voice calls out from their left.
"Em? Is that you?"
Emily turns and starts heading that way, calling back: "Yeah. I'm grabbin' something to eat before class."
When they walk through another doorway, another woman is leaning against a counter drinking out of a mug. She raises an eyebrow at Emily.
"So, who's this?"
"This is Danny, and have you eaten the takeout?" Emily asks while heading over to a white fridge in a corner.
The other woman rolls her eyes. "Hello, Danny. I'm Julia, and I'm guessing she brought you in to feed you?"
He nods, and she shakes her head.
"Sorry, Julia, gotta run." Danny hears while munching on some noodles.
"Bye?"
A door opens and shuts. There are footsteps near the back room where the child is at. Julia walks in.
"Oh! You're still here, and Em just left. Dammit Em."
"She do oft?"
"Naw. She's got class. If you want to wait for her. I've got some old engines I can let you at."
He jumps off the stool and follows her like an excited puppy.
"Hey, Jewels."
One-woman glares at the other. "Never call me that again, Emily. Also, the kid is in the parts room. I let him at the broken engines."
Em, gives Julia a look. "You let a kid play with an engine?"
She shrugs. "You're the one who brought him here. Besides, nothing has blown up yet."
Em rolls her eyes as she opens the door to the dark parts room.
"Hum, you must've missed the kid leavin'."
21st Aug
A child's giggling comes down from one of the trees around a bench in the park. The young woman that was passing below looks up, putting a hand on her hip.
"Hey squirt, whatcha doin' up there?"
A head full of fluffy black hair pokes down. "Emwy!"
She smiles at him, "It's Emily, actually not sure you can say that just call me Em. Also, that's not an answer."
He giggles again. "Emmu-EM!" He tries and ends with a giggle. "I a monkey."
"Sure, but little monkeys don't get cookies."
"COOKIE!"
She flinches back a little from the scream, then finds the child no longer in the tree. She looks around in the other trees, only to hear a giggle from right next to her. "How'd you…" she begins, then huffs a laugh. "Let's get you some cookies."
"Hey, Julia! How many cookies we have left?"
"Shouldn't you be in class?" Julia shoots back as she walks into the room.
Emily rolls her eyes, "It's Thursday; my classes are over for the day, yours aren't. What's with people not answering my questions today?"
The other woman smirks, "Well, you're fun to annoy, but they're on the counter."
She huffs, then turns to the child only to find the child not there. Her looking around is interrupted by Julia. "He's already gotten into them; how many times are you going to kidnap the kid, Em?"
"I'm not trying to, but he'd be really easy to."
"Hey kid, where'd you get off… How'd you get in there?"
He looks at her with wide blue eyes from the front seat of a locked car, "Hewp."
She facepalms.
"Em! Where's the kid?"
"What? He was…"
She cuts off as they both see the small head poking down from the rafters. She facepalms. "I'm not sure kidnapers would be able to contain the kid while maintaining their sanity."
An eyebrow gets raised at her, "Really?"
She points at the child, "Found him in a locked car, with no key!"
The clouds are painted pink as the small white-haired child follows a little blue light while giggling. They both stop when a woman's voice says from behind them, "Hello, little phantom and friend."
They spin around, Danny falling on his ass and Blue landing in his stomach.
"Apologies for startling you, but I thought you would have seen me, or your friend would have told you when you entered the clearing."
He looks down at the disorientated Blue, then shakes his head.
"I should not have assumed anything, but then I cannot communicate with spirits."
"Spirits?" Danny asks with a tilted head.
"Spirits are entities that reside within the Mirror Plane, which exists like a fog over my own."
"Wha?"
"Some beings can interact with the other planes of existence." She gives him a soft smile, "Someday you will understand, but sadly today is not that day. I believe it is time for you to go home."
Chapter Stats: 5 pages and 1158 words.
Right, so this was previously most of chapter nine, part of chapter eleven, and a small part of a chapter I cannot find. This is where the timeline is really changed from the original story, so this is where the reviews really get strange.
I'm trying to keep the reviews from giving away information from the chapters they were originally commented on, so them being from seemingly strange chapters that's what's going on. Also, small things like the first chapter has consumed chapter two so this has less chapters in general… I'm gonna shut up now.
