It was too beautiful a day to stay inside, so Louis LeBeau had fixed sandwiches and coffee and the team was eating outside Barracks Two. They had dragged one of their benches outside, so everyone had a relatively comfortable spot to sit.
Carter accidently dropped a piece of bread from his lunch. Before picking it up, he stared at it thoughtfully, and looked at Newkirk, "What's the farthest place away from us, on the other side of the world?"
Newkirk looked at him quizzically, but answered, "I dunno, mate, I suppose it'd be someplace in New Zealand. Why?"
Still staring at the bread, Carter scratched his cheek, "Well, I was just thinking…if some guy over there in New Zealand just happened to drop a piece of bread at the same time as me, like just now, and it's still laying on the ground, like mine is, did we just make a world sandwich?"
Newkirk's jaw dropped, while Kinch and LeBeau simply looked bewildered. Hogan, unfortunately, had chosen that moment to take a drink of his coffee, which he then immediately choked on as he burst into laughter at Carter's incredibly obscure but strangely reasonable observation.
Hogan shook his head in amazement, as they all found themselves staring at the bread lying on the dusty path in front of the barracks. It was odd to think that the eccentric sergeant would have made that kind of connection. Odder still was the connection that Hogan suddenly felt to the unknown hypothetical New Zealander. Apparently, he wasn't the only one, because as Carter reached down to pick up the bread, Newkirk laid a quick hand on his shoulder to stop him, and LeBeau spoke up.
"Non, Andre', leave it. I will fix you another sandwich."
"Thanks, Louis." Carter smiled at the men around him, as LeBeau disappeared inside. The conversation moved on to other topics, and nothing more was said about the bread on the ground, and if anyone else thought it odd that each day for the next week a small slice of brown bread found its way into that same spot, well…each man on the team though the sacrifice was worth the smile on Carter's face when he spotted it.
The End
