All was quiet as Edward gunned the car out of the driveway heading towards school. I unconsciously grabbed at my seat belt as Edward was driving reassuring myself that we weren't going to get in a wreck, not that Edward would allow anything bad to happen to me anyway. Being a vampire, Edward has been driving for decades and his enhanced senses/reflexes make it almost impossible. Looking over at the guy in question, I noticed that Edward appeared to be pensive and his face gave away traces of being taut. His normally golden eyes had taken a darker look as if he were hungry or experiencing an intense emotion.
I wanted to ask him what was wrong, but something told me it be best to wait. Till then I decided to gather my thoughts. Was this about Percy? Earlier when Edward met him, I noticed that Edward reacted negatively in his presence. Even last night, when Edward came he claimed that Alice wasn't able to see me in her visions. When I mentioned my cousin, he became protective and closed off. The way his face contorted when to my cousins scent was another indicator that something was wrong. Was there something wrong with Percy? Since I met him yesterday all appeared to be well aside from the gloom hanging around him. Or was this something to do with this bad experience Charlie talked about last night. Was it something supernatural that ended the life of Percy's girlfriend? Was it that a vampire scared him? O was it that a vampire was on the hunt for him? From previous experience I can say that it's not fun.
I was still lost in my thoughts by the time we pulled into the parking lot at school. We had just pulled in next to Emmett's jeep, when a pair of hands shot out and scooped me from the shotgun seat. I let out a squeal as my hands wrapped around the nearest object. Booming laughter snapped me out of it as I turned me head towards the source of the reverberations. It was Emmett, who just so happened to be the one that was holding me.
"You best learn how to take a scare there little Bella," Emmett laughed. "Living with a bunch of vampires you might end up being scared to death.' I didn't think about it when I tried to hit him in the shoulder with my left hand. It felt like slapping a piece of granite or concrete. I didn't earn myself any points there as Emmett broke out into another round of hollering. After a minute or so Alice was able to convince Emmett to put me down. She is the best friend I could have ever asked for, but why didn't Edward ask him. Once I got back on my wobbling feet, I spun around and tried to find where Edward was standing. Jasper and Rosalie had apparently already left for class, Edward was standing a few feet to my left staring at the ground. Calmly, I sort of stumbled my way towards him, which caught his attention as he flashed me that crooked grin I loved so much.
Cold hands gripped my sides as he steadied me. I looked up in to his loving gaze, but quickly shook myself out of it as I inquired to his current state of mind.
"What is it," I asked softly as my hands sat on his shoulders.
"It's nothing Bella," Edward replied, "just something that concerns me."
"Is it about the Volturi again," I asked, "we have been over this. Alice has seen me become a vampire somewhere in the future. So we don't have to worry about…" but before I could finish Edward had started to pull me towards class. I immediately fell silent as I knew that was his way to delay or stop the current conversation. I said my good byes as I headed off to senior English, while he headed towards U.S Government. I spent the entire morning debating in my head what could be wrong with him. I learned that Mike was trying to organize a graduation party with Jessica riding on his coattails. Angela asked me about this new book that came out and Lauren continued to ignore me like she has ever since the Cullen's had originally left.
Finally it arrived at lunch time. Walking into the lunch, despite always being intimidating and for the fact that people tend to stare at me when I go over and join the Culllens because you know they look absolutely perfect and I am not, wasn't that bad today. I made straight towards the Cullen's table since Edward has gotten in the habit of getting my lunch for me. Taking my traditional seat beside Edward, i said hello to everyone at the table before I swung around and focused on him. 'No matter what,' I thought, 'I was going to get some answers.
"What is up with you," I asked concerned, "you have been gloomy all day."
"Bella it is nothing you should be worried about," said Edward.
"No," I said, "you said you wanted to be in this relationship again and that means no secrets. Besides if it concerns me then I should know. If I am going to be one of you one day then I need to be in this together with you."
"Bella," started Edward before he got interrupted by Alice.
"Bella's right Edward," Alice claimed, "She deserves to know." At that I felt a wave of calmness come over me. Knowing where it came from I turned towards Jasper and smiled to which he gave a nod.
"Well it's about Percy," Edward started, "I have been talking about it with Rosalie, Jasper, and Emmett this morning and well we are a bit concerned."
"What do you mean," I asked
"Percy has a distinct scent," Edward started, "Not like delectable, but it smells more magnified than the typical human. Like an ocean breeze coming in from sea. At first it was nothing, but after a second my brain screamed danger."
"That doesn't make him a threat Edward," I exclaimed, 'he is my cousin."
"What I am coming at Bella is that I don't think he is human," Edward said.
"WHAT?"
"Well for one, he is apparently immune to my and Alice's gifts. Along with his distinct scent, I noticed that he has several scars adjourning his body and I picked up this aura about him. Plus the way he reacted to me is not that usual. He reacted like is going to pounce as opposed to fear."
"Wow Edward," Emmett chuckled, "You got that much off of him in one meeting. I didn't know you were such a stalker or is it that you play for the other team. If you know what I mean." At that he started roaring in laughter. A few of his siblings joined him, even I cracked a smile. It was like that tension of this entire conversation was lifted.
"So what," I asked accusingly, "were you all planning on killing him?"
"No no Bella," Edward replied, "Rosalie briefly suggested it, but we decided to bring it up with Carlisle and ask that you help us get a meeting with him. We need to know that he is not a threat." I promptly sent a glare at Rosalie for suggesting that they should kill my cousin, but as you can imagine I lost. Her glare absolutely dwarfed mine.
"Now Bella," Edward stated which caused my attention to divert to him, "have you thought more of the question I asked you in the meadow last weekend?" At first I could think of what he was talking about, but then I remembered. He had asked about my feelings towards marriage. My cheeks started burning as I looked down from his golden eyes. I have been putting that of all week for a reason.
Interlude
After school, Edward of course drove me home. I was preoccupied with thoughts of finishing this year of school and of being turned in to a vampire. Suddenly, my daydream shifted into a wedding setting where I was in a beautiful white dress, but it ended there. I have never imagined that I would be married to anyone and Edward wants just that.
I was suddenly snapped out of my thoughts as Edwards shook my shoulder causing me to look at him. Edwards's eyes were dancing and that crooked grin of his threatened to display itself across his face. It was then that I realized that we had already reached Charlie's house.
"It will always amaze me how lost you can get in your thoughts. Maybe one day I will see what it is you escape to." I had to smile at the thought since Edward, being the talented mind reader he is cannot read my thoughts. "What were you thinking about?"
"I was thinking on taking Percy to the bonfire down at La Push that Jacob invited me to for this Saturday."
"Bella," Edward said warningly.
"I know that you don't trust him Edward, but he is one of my oldest friends. He would never harm me."
"But I don't like you going down there at all."
"It'll be fine."
"If you say," Edward said," could you bring Percy by the house on Sunday. Emmett and I are leaving in about an hour to going on a hunting trip."
"Sure," I said, "you know I still don't approve of you all treating my cousin like a threat."
"we just have to cover all the bases," Edward said, "ever since the volturi. Now you aught to go inside before Charlie comes out here with his police belt."
"Love you Edward."
"And I love you too my Bella." At that I stepped out of Edward's Volvo and made my way towards the house. Once I was inside, I went straight for the kitchen looking for what I was going to make for dinner.
"Hey Charlie," I yelled, "Are you in there?" I heard him yell back from the stairs. I am assuming that he was moving towards the living room. A few minutes later I heard another set of feet coming down the stairs which I guessing was Percy. "I think I am going to make chicken and rice for dinner." Unlike the last time I heard no one call back. Heading towards the living room, I decided to see what was distracting the boys from replying back. Once I got there I noticed that both of them were sucked into the news. Listening in I heard.
"…Numerous disappearances in the Seattle area, similar to last year's disappearance of Riley Biers. All that's left is several dried patches of blood." Looking over at Charlie I noticed that he looked worryingly at the screen. Percy had a blank expression on his face, but unless my eyes were deceiving me him eyes had a hard look in them as he watched the gruesome scenes.
"Bella," the voice of Charlie said. I looked over to see that he had turned to look at me. "Percy. Seattle P.D has requested assistance in their investigations so I will be gone for the next couple days. I am sure that I can trust you two to keep this house together in one piece."
With that he got up from his chair and made way to pack some gear. Percy collapsed on the couch, while he continued to stare at the screen. From I saw, it looked eerily similar to that of a vampire attack, but if it was then do the Cullen's know about his? If they do then why are they keeping it from me?
