Bella pulled her truck up to a shabby looking red house with wood stacked on either side of the door. It sort of looked like one of those old school houses that you hear about in the nineteenth century. As soon as we pulled in the front door of the house opened up and out came a guy around my age if I were to guess. The guy had tanned skin with short black hair. He stood about 6'2, but the weirdest thing about him was that he wasn't wearing a shirt. In fact it was slung over his shoulder as if he had just gotten out of the shower which I could tell he did not because I could sense any water on him.
He descended on Bella as soon as she opened the door, which in hindsight was good because Bella stumbled out of the truck and fell face first into him. I could tell that Bella's face must be burning red which I could tell as he helped her up and gave her the a full on hug. It made Bella look so small compared to the frame of the buy in question. I realized just then that this must be Bella's friend Jacob Black and the other half to the love triangle that Charlie told me about.
"What ya been up to Bells," Jacob asked, "I haven't seen you in a while. You don't come down to La Push anymore?"
"Hello Jake," Bella greeted, "I have been a little busy lately finishing things up. Thanks for your help by the way"
"I see your still hanging out with the bloo… your boyfriend," Jacob started until he noticed me behind him. I could see suspicion and jealousy flaring in his eyes as he took me in. 'I get it, you know,' I thought, 'a guy shows up with your crush you would immediately think a relationship is going on. We're cousins I swear even if we look nothing alike.'
"Jake," Bella said turning towards me, "I would like to introduce you to my cousin Percy. Percy this is Jacob and yes I am still dating Edward for your information." I notice that some of the tension left his features once he realized that I was Bella's cousin. Instead now he checked me out, not that way perves get your head out of the gutter, in a new light.
"Charlie's step sister right," he asked. He must have found something in me that he didn't like because he started glaring at me.
"Yeah," I replied, "I moved out here to live with Charlie and Bella after she died. So of just to get away from that environment.
"Oh," he said looking down, "I can understand that." He must have experienced something similar.
"I hope you don't mind that I brought him with me," Bella said breaking us out of our stare down, "Percy needed to get out of the house and I thought that this might be a good opportunity. Besides, Percy here loves the beach."
"Sure," Jacob said, "heck I am sure he can even stay and listen to my dad go over some of the tribal legends you heard about last time you were down here." With that he slung his right arm over Bella's shoulder and led us through a patch of woods. After a few minutes we saw several tanned people hanging around a fire pit, in where I'm guessing the bonfire will be located. Most of the people present were relatively young with a few elders amongst the crowd. Upon reaching the crowd, my nerves activated and something was telling me that I wasn't supposed to be here. It was like something tingling on the back of my neck urging me to leave, but for Bella's sake I had to stay.
Around the ring there sat couples. The largest male present sat on the other side of the ring. He was staring into the eyes of this young woman, who was sitting on his lap. It made my heart lurch because it made me think of the affection that I used to stare in Annabeth's eyes with. Next to them was a couple making out and on the other side was a male playing with what looked like was his sister or half-sister, I am not sure which.
"You remember everyone Bella," Jacob said looking over at us, "but for your information. That man over there in the wheel chair is my father and the one next to him is old Quil. The lady talking to them is name sue Clearwater. Now on to the couples. That one over there is Sam. He is the big shot and the one sitting in his lap is his fiancé Emily. The two making out are Jared and Kim. Over there is little Quil playing with baby Clare."
Towards the end of his introductions the guy, Sam I believe it was looked over at me as his Fiancé got off of his lap and went over to one of the nearby houses. Something in me was telling me that he was sizing me up. After a few minutes, the other two males joined him in his staring. I felt as if they some sort predators trying to see if I was a threat. Even the male currently walking out of the house that Emily just walked into started staring at me.
"Hey guys," Jacob said, "has anyone seen Seth and Leah around." I didn't really have time to wonder if it were the same Seth that I saw the other day because chose that moment to start addressing me.
"Who are you," he said in a voice that clearly implied 'or else.
"Hi ya," I said, "I'm Bella's cousin." Clearly, that didn't work because I could still feel the pressure of their gazes on me. The guy, who has yet to be named because he just came out of the house, started visibly shaking.
"You're not human," Sam stated, "what are you before this gets ugly?"
"Jacob," I heard Bella mutter behind me, "what is Sam talking about?" Unease crept down my spine as I started taking a few steps back. My right hand hovering above the pocket that I knew riptide was held.
"Sam," Jacob said, "we don't have to do this. I invited him here to talk it out first. Seth..," but before he could finish the guy who was shaking uncontrollably burst off the ground. It was like he leapt forward and then suddenly enveloped in a small cyclone of fur. By the time the thing hit the ground a sandy brown wolf was in his, or it's, place.
"Paul," Sam barked, "stand down." But the sandy brown wolf had already leap at me. I jumped back a couple of feet ripping the pen which held rip tide out of my pocket. My senses magnified as I detected danger. The godly blood now pumping hard through my system. The elders were shouting possibly at Paul or even this situation, but they didn't seem surprised in fact no one did even Bella. Out of the corner of my eye, Jacob stood protectively in front of her. The wolf paid little attention to them as it sailed through the air at me.
In one swift movement. I uncapped riptide and swung it in an arc at the place is was originally standing. The timing was right the slashed the left side of his face leaving a line of blood staining its fur. At the last moment I swerved my blade arm and maneuvered the blade to slicing into the wolf-life creature's, can't be a werewolf because I have seen those before mind you, paw. It promptly fell to the ground and struggled to get back in standing position. I didn't come out of it unscathed either. The wolf's paw came in contact with the shoulder of my sword arm. Pain flared. I was waiting for the wolf to make a second attack, but as I looked up it appeared to be straining in place trying to get to me. The blood still poured now falling on to get ground.
Without any thought, I spun around and ran. I hoped that I might be able to lure the wolf away from Bella and the others. I could hear the others around me beginning to move. Two or three sets of footsteps chased after me and a couple of pairs moved to the wolf? Are they completely nuts? I made it about eight yards, looking over my shoulder at who was following me. Jared and Sam were making quick progress after me, but as I turned around I ran into a warm body. Both of us fell to the ground.
I could tell that the figure was female. One by the obvious curves, but also from the eloquent swearing I heard. I looked up and noticed Seth, the kid I met the other day helping the other figure to her feet. Clutching my shoulder, I got up and prepared to run or even mist travel. I felt a little light headed from the loss of blood. I risked a glance at the figure I knocked over in order to apologize, but in hindsight I wish I hadn't.
As soon as I looked in her eyes I felt blown away. My body felt as if it were drifting away in the river styx or maybe in the vacuum of space. But I felt as if nothing mattered anymore. Even having met the goddess of love herself, I have never believed in love at first sight. After I had lost Annabeth I thought it was never in the cards for me. But there, staring into this girls endless brown eyes, I felt like I would do or be anything for her. Only her. Heat flared up in the small of my back where I used to house the mortal anchor for the curse of Achilles. I felt a tugging as if it were latched to another. To her. Just like it latched to Annabeth years before.
She stood about 5'9 with black hair that went down to her chin. High cheek bones and brown eyes adjourned her face with tanned skin like the others. She wore short shorts with a pink top. I faintly noticed that she had a band on her ankle as if were to clip into something. By the time I regained my bearings, Sam, Jared, Jacob and even Bella had caught up to us. Everyone was standing in a stunned silence. The girl I was previously looking at was still staring at me with wide eyes. It looked as if she had just seen the sun for the first time, but I doubt such a beautiful girl such as herself could be cohorting with the darkness.
Snapping out of my thoughts, my senses told me that the others were about here so I ran. Pain flared in my shoulder. Desperate I searched for the tug in my gut, gathering water particles around me, and vapor traveled out of there. But before I could vanish into mist I heard Bella ask Jacob a question.
"What happened," She said with a gapping mouth, "don't tell me she…"
"Yep," Jacob said, "she did. Leah imprinted on him.
