Buses and Trains

Drabble Summary: She thought that he was impossible to reach. She just thought that…

'So I walked under a bus,
I got hit by a train,
Keep falling in love,
Which is kind of the same…

I sank out at sea,
Crashed my car gone insane,
And it felt so good,
I wanna do it again…'

He was cool.

He was amazing.

He was great.

He was any adjectives that you could think of.

That was what Ryuzaki Sakuno thought of a certain tennis prodigy named Echizen Ryoma. He was no ordinary boy; he was the Prince of Tennis after all.

He was popular.

He was a good looking guy.

All girls were head over heels of him.

He couldn't compare to her no matter what. He was good at everything while she had flaws. He was difficult to reach and she had proven that a lot of times. Even though, there were times that she couldn't congratulate him for his wins, she would always there with Tomoka to cheer for him.

That alone was enough for her, even if he wouldn't notice her passing by.

One day, she was just passing the hallway when she noticed that he was being surrounded by girls, talking to him with other stuffs. She could see how he wanted to get away from them but being the gentle one, he tried to answer some of their questions which were tennis related.

Later the other regulars arrived and then began teasing him, having girlfriends and flirting at the corridor. Ryoma would just retort 'urusai, senpai-tachi' to them and then leave them alone. She sighed after seeing that.

"Ryoma-kun!"

A girl's voice caught her attention inside the room. Their classmates murmured when they saw her. She followed her with her eyes and saw her approaching to the person beside her.

"That's Miho Akihabara a regular tennis player and she's talking to Echizen-kun." She heard her classmates talking about her.

"She's cute and she's good at tennis too."

"I wish I was good as Echizen."

"In your dreams," Her classmate said, "But they look good together, aren't they?"

"Yeah, both of them are good at tennis. They look good as doubles partner."

She looked down as they talked about the girl and him. They couldn't understand what they were talking about but she didn't care anymore. Ryoma looked good with Miho as she thought. They were both good at tennis.

They looked good together indeed.

Morning practice:

"Do you need a practice partner?"

She immediately stopped rallying on the wall that morning when someone talked behind her. She was surprised to see Ryoma standing behind her, his racket was resting on his shoulder.

"R-Ryoma-kun," She blushed when she looked at him, "B-but I am not good—"

"It doesn't matter," He said walking to the other side of the court, "It's better than rallying on the wall, isn't it?"

She was totally shocked when he said. She didn't expect that he would talk to her that day, let alone play with her. She must have been dreaming. She walked to the other side of the court. Ryoma positioned himself while she served then she remembered something.

"W-would it be better if you could practice with… with Akihabara-san?" She looked down, "S-she's… better than me."

Ryoma frowned when she asked, "Aki-what?"

She looked up once again, "Akihabara-san?"

"Who's she?"

"Eh?!"

"Serve now," He said cutting her to her next words, "We don't have all day."

"H-hai…" She said as she served the ball. It was a total surprise for her. She should have expected that Ryoma was not good at remembering names. But she's a good tennis player and Ryoma would possibly remember her name because she was a good one. How come he didn't know about Akihabara Miho?

That thought remained to her until they finished practicing that day.

Sunday:

She was rallying again on the wall at a public tennis court when Ryoma spotted her once again.

"I really admire your effort of practicing, you're getting there."

She looked down when he said that. She didn't know that he was watching her all the time and even bothering her until she was done. After a few tips and reminders, the boy asked her to have a little match with him but of course she lost to him in the end.

"A-arigatou, Ryoma-kun." She said sitting on a bench beside him.

"Un."

She didn't really know what was happening but it was rare for them to talk and spend time like that. But then again, she knew that Ryoma was there because he wanted to play tennis, he only happened to see her there. It was all about tennis after all.

She suddenly stood up and looked at him, "I'll go get us some ponta." With that, she immediately ran away from him before he could say something.

Later on:

She brought two cans of ponta with her and was on her way back to the court. But what surprised her was Ryoma wasn't alone anymore.

He was with a girl, with Miho Akihabara. She didn't know how the girl got there, but they were standing at the other side of the court. The girl was clinging to his arms and smiling at him.

Her heart was aching for an unknown reason. Seeing them together, felt like she had no place for the Prince's side. Her heart felt more pain and shock when she saw Miho kissing Ryoma on the cheek. Ryoma just blinked his eyes twice and they were widened a little. She immediately turned around to avoid seeing more.

"Ryuzaki."

She flinched when he called her. It was too late then. She looked back and smiled at them. They were close but she was not kissing him anymore.

"G-gomen, I—I didn't mean to," She tried as she walked backwards, "I—I'll leave you now. I'll see you at school tomorrow." She could hear Ryoma calling out to her but she ignored it.

She started to run and didn't care where her feet would lead her.

After a Few Minutes:

Her feet brought her back to the vending machine where she bought the pontas. She grabbed the both of them which were on her lap and thought what she had witness a while ago.

They look good together… indeed. She couldn't deny that fact. Miho was pretty and Ryoma was a good looking guy. Both of them were good at tennis. They shared the same passion. Even though she liked the tennis prodigy, she knew that she was no match to the girl.

She sighed really hard. She should face that fact. They would go farther than they already were. They had a better future in tennis career.

She was cut from her reverie when someone had lightly knocked her on the head. She looked behind and was surprised to see the tennis prodigy there.

"That's rude of leaving me there."

"G-gomen…"

Ryoma sat beside her. She didn't say another word when he did that, "That's my ponta."

"A-ah, right." She had completely forgotten about the ponta. Ryoma said that as a statement. She couldn't blame him for she told him before that she would get them their ponta. The tennis prodigy opened the lid of his ponta and drank it while she just played hers with her fingers.

"She's the one who kissed me, you know."

She flinched when he said that. So he knew why she left after all. She bet that he did. Still looking at the drink she answered, "R-Ryoma-kun can kiss any girl that he likes."

Silence erupted after she said that but not after Ryoma muttered a sound.

"I will kiss the only girl that I like."

For some reason, she blushed at his words. It was true that Miho kissed him and not the other way around. But she felt jealous about it still. She was hurt despite that she was nobody to him. But the fact that Ryoma would only kiss the girl that he liked was enough for her.

"U-un." She nodded as she smiled.

Ryoma stood up, faced her and said, "I'll see tomorrow and let's practice again."

She looked up and was really shocked when he said that, "H-hai…" She was able to nod and smile at him, "T-tomorrow then."

"Good," He walked closer to her, tipped her chin up and kissed her cheek for a few seconds, "Ja." He gave her a smirk before he turned on his heels and walked away from her.

Sakuno was stunned at her location. Her eyes widened as her blushed was really visible to her cheek. She slowly reached for her cheek that the boy kissed and suddenly said;

"R-Ryoma-kun… j-just… t-that means… h-he…"

She couldn't finish her words for her mind understood but her words couldn't express it. His actions a while ago did tell her that he did.
