Thanks again for the reviews, they always mean a lot to me. I've included some parts of Catching Fire.
Peeta is sitting on the couch in the sitting room, the same room that Katniss had told him that it had been all for the games. He was drawing that very moment, as if it had all been a nightmare, and not reality. It was was something that he use to pray. He was was interrupted shortly by Katniss coming in the room, "Hi," she said softly.
He got up to leave. He was still mad at her for yesterday. Mad that he wasn't given vital information, and was kept in the dark again. And he didn't really feel like be anywhere near her.
"Peeta, please don't go," she pleaded, as she grabbed a hold of his hand. Holding onto it tight.
"Why?" wanting an answer. He was confused why she wanted him around now.
"I miss you," she confessed. Staring up into his eyes intensely, "I miss how—"
He didn't allow her to finish her sentence, "Oh so you care now, when we're on a train to the Capital, and being threaten to show them our relationship. Well guess what I don't believe you!" He had heard so many things, he just wasn't sure how to react.
"It's true!" she begged him to believe her.
He was finally letting all of his hurt feelings towards her go, and taking it out on her, "Oh really, well you haven't talked to me since we arrived home. You avoided me at all cost. And it seemed like you didn't even want your sister around me."
"It just been hard processing everything in my mind. And by pushing you away, it meant that the Capital didn't own me," she said trying to get him to understand why she had done it.
"Well I was too, but I didn't push you away. I tried to be there, even if it meant just as a friend, but no you didn't want any part of that. So why now? Is it because Gale's not here?" He didn't want to be her stand in just because Gale wasn't here.
"What does Gale have to do with this?" Did she really think he didn't know about the two of them, he thought.
"I know you're an item now, I saw you kiss," he hissed.
"ARGH! You act like I'm the only one to push people away. You have done it too! My sister has gone by your house every day for a month, but you locked yourself away, why?"
He wasn't about to tell her about it. "You wouldn't understand," he says before running off.
He rushed back to his room, to his bathroom, and locked himself inside. He put his hand in his pants pocket, revealing the pocket knife he had hidden in there. He slowly lifted up his right sleeve of his shirt, and slowly dragged the cold blade across his skin. Tears filled his eyes, but he refused to let them fall. He wouldn't be the weak little boy that his mom always called him.
He leaned against the door, and slowly slipped to the ground. "Why is she choosing now to care?" he cried. He didn't even know if he could believe her. Was this just another game she was playing, especially now that the Capital was threatening them.
He watched as the blood ran down his arm, as the pain of the arm eased the pain he was feeling inside. He was so conflicted, he still loved Katniss through this all, even if he didn't want to. He had always know that she wasn't good with people, and maybe this is just what it was. Maybe she was finally having a change of heart.
But he felt the need to protect himself from the blow out. For when she burst his bubble again. He wasn't sure he could handle it the next time around.
Katniss stood on the other side of Peeta's door ready to knock. She was taken back at Peeta's outburst. She had never seen him so angry, not even the day Gale said such horrible things to him outside her house. That day had really shown how great of a guy he really was, by not playing into Gale's hands, like he had wanted Peeta to do. And maybe it had a lot to do with his mother, and him being use to fury, and not saying a thing. She admired that he had never let anyone get the best of him.
And yet today he finally let her have it. Not that she could blame him. She had ignored him for months. It just didn't seem like the same Peeta that she had always watched from afar. Had she caused this all. Did he finally break when he witnessed the kiss? It fit the timeline of when Prim said that she had noticed that he had locked himself away.
Guilt began to feel eat away at her that she may be the cause of breaking him. All she wanted was her boy with the bread to come back to her, to see that she that smile of his face again.
She walked away from his room, and chose to let him cool down. Not knowing that this was when he needed her the most.
Peeta walked into sitting room, to find Katniss already in there. He spent all night thinking about their fight, this past month, and even the time since they got home. He knew they wouldn't get through the rest of this tour if they continue like this, if he continue to take his hurt out on her.
He sat down right across from her, "Hey…"
Katniss looks up from the book she was reading, "Hey," she smiled. "Peeta, I'm sorry about last night."
"You don't have to apologize me. I know it's not fair for me to hold you to things you said in the games. You saved us, I know that now. But I can't go on acting for the cameras and then…just continue to ignore each other in real life. So if you can stop looking at me like I'm wounded, then I can quit acting like it. And then maybe…we have a shot at being friends."
Not really looking at him, "I've never been very good at being friends. I'm not good with talking to people."
"Well, for starters it does help when you know the person. I hardly I know anything about you except that you're stubborn, and good with the bow."
"That pretty much sums me up."
"No, there's more than that, you just don't want to tell me," was he hoping for too much, wanting to get her more. Especially since Haymitch told them that every year, for the rest of their life they would have to play up the star crossed lovers. It wasn't just for the tour, or the next Hunger Games.
"It's like I said, I'm—"
"You see, Katniss, the way the whole friend thing works is you have to tell each other the…deep stuff," he really shouldn't be surprised that she's being reluctant.
"The deep stuff?" she said as she pulled her knees into her chin.
"Yeah, like what is your favourite colour?"
She took a deep breath, as if she was thinking if she wanted to reveal it to him, "Green. What's yours?"
"Orange."
"Like Effie's hair," she laughed.
He smiled, "No. Not that orange, more uh…more like a sunset kind of orange."
Katniss looks down at her hands, "Peeta I'm sorry that it took me so many years to thank you for the bread."
"It's alright, I never expected anything from you."
"I know, but you deserved to know how grateful I was for it. You saved us. If it hadn't been for you, then I don't think we would have survived, and I don't think I would have thought of how to save my family."
Katniss was thrashing around in her bed, having a horrible nightmare, when Peeta came running in. He sat down on the edge of her bed, and gently shook her, "Katniss."
"Peeta, it was so awful. Snow killed Prim right in front of me because we couldn't convince him," she cried. She was so afraid that it was going to come true.
He put his hands over hers, "I understand, I get nightmares too."
"Really!" She hadn't really thought of it. When he came by the house, he always seemed like everything was alright.
"Yeah." He gets up, and is ready to leave, "Goodnight."
Grabbing his hand, "Peeta, will you stay with me?"
He could hear the vulnerability in her voice, and he couldn't help but be there for her, "Yeah." He picks up the blanket, and climbs under the covers. "Always." Katniss scoots over, and cuddles into him. Peeta puts his arm around her. Having her in his arms, like this, felt right. He wasn't going to let his insecurities, and his hurt ruin this for him.
They were just hours away from the Capital. Things the past 2 weeks had gotten better, Katniss & Peeta had grown closer. And each night they continued to sleep in the same bed, helping one another keep the nightmares away.
"Sweetheart, Loverboy, I need to talk with you," Haymitch said, sitting down in the dining cart with them.
"Okay," Peeta said. He didn't like the tone of his voice, whatever he was going to say didn't sound good.
"Things aren't looking good, we need to do something else to convince Panem that this is real. Something that they can't question."
"We should get married," Katniss spoked out.
"No!" Peeta said. "I won't marry you if it's not real." Marry her if it was a lie, would be too much for him.
"That's not helping, Katniss," Haymitch said.
"I'm serious. Like Haymitch said before, we're going to be on this train forever, it's gonna happen eventually, why not on our own terms."
"It does make a statement, I'll give you that," Haymitch says.
"Yeah, sure, lets do it," Peeta says before walking out of the cart. He knew that they were right, but it didn't make it any easier. This definitely how he pictured anything of this.
"Tonight we have special guest today," Caesar Flickerman says. "We have our favourite star cross lovers, Peeta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen."
The whole crowd cheers as they walk on stage towards the host.
"Welcome back to the Capital!" Caesar says.
"It's good too be back," Katniss said, putting on a big smile.
"Well we're definitely happy to see how happy you two are."
"And I think there is something the could make me even more happy," Peeta interrupted. He got down on one knee in front of Katniss. "Katniss, I would be honoured if you would say yes, and be my wife."
Katniss put on a big smile, "Yes! Yes!"
Peeta got off the ground, leaned in for a kiss, and spun her around.
"Just when you thought things couldn't get more exciting, they have surprised us with a new twist in their love affair. It's a fairy tale ending for the two star cross lovers."
Effie escorted Katniss and Peeta to the party at the Capital, being put on in their honour. They both looked at one another, nervous about seeing Snow. Tonight they would find out whether or not they convinced everyone of their love.
White lights hung around all the trees in the front of the mansion, "This is the Presidential Palace, and it's going to be the party of the year. So remember eyes bright, chins up, smiles on. I'm talking to you, Katniss. Now, there will be photographers, interviews, everyone will be here to celebrate with you, my victors," Effie said as they continued to walk up the stairs. "Breath it all in children," she said with so much joy, believing they were happy to be here.
As they walked into the home, "This is all for you."
"It's cozy," Peeta said sarcastically. When in reality it felt cold.
"Attitude," she warns him.
"Sorry."
Pointing to the big room, "The library is all mahogany."
As they arrived at the ballroom, "Everybody's who's anybody is here and they all want to meet you."
Katniss and Peeta walk into the room, Katniss holding onto Peeta's arm. Peeta takes a breath, putting on a big smile, "Here we go."
"How can these people eat so much?" Katniss asked Peeta, as she noticed tables, beyond tables of food. It was more food then she had ever seen in her whole life. It was enough to feed their district for a whole year.
"I don't know. I can't even think of eating anymore," he replied.
Flavius comes up behind them with a plate of macaroons, "Here, you have to try these."
"Sorry, we're full," Katniss answered.
Flavius put the plate down, grabs 2 small shot glasses of a pink coloured drink, and gives them each one, "Here."
"What's this?" Peeta asked.
"It's for when you're full. It makes you sick, so that you can go on eating."
Both of their eyes bulged at the comment. "Time to dance," Peeta said, taking both the shot glasses, putting them back on the table, and grabbing Katniss's hand.
"I can't believe them," Katniss whispered, hoping no one around them heard her. "People are starving, and their throwing up so they can eat more." She couldn't believe how the people here lived. They had more food then they could possible eat, and yet their were Districts that struggled for their next meal. This was just ice on the cake.
"Can't say it should surprise us? It's the same people who cheer on children fighting children to their death." She knew he was right. People in the Capital were too self absorbed to think of anyone but themselves.
After of hours of being in the Capital people presence, they had spent the night listening to them tell them how much they loved the two of them. And wish they would get more opportunity of sharing their company with them in the future like they did with the other Victors. Some Victors like Finnick may like to spend their time here, but he definitely didn't. Less time they had to spend in the Capital the better.
Peeta needed a break from them, "Katniss, would you like to get some air."
"Alright," Katniss said, giving her his hand.
Peeta leads her out into the garden's at the back of the mansion. As they look around they noticed that there were white roses surrounding them. They're not surprised though, Snow had an obsession with them, and everything white.
"I will be happy when we get away away from this place. These people are just too over the top," Peeta said, as he sat down on the bench in front of a beautiful water fountain, that was lit up.
Sitting down beside him, grabbing his hand, "I'm just glad that I'm not alone in this. I couldn't imagine having to go through this alone. Peeta these last few weeks have been nice, it's nice to know that there is someone who understands all that I've been going through. Who I don't have to explain anything to. I mean even if I could explain it to them, I don't know if they would truly ever understand."
"Katniss, I'll always be here for you, no matter what."
Katniss leans into him, closing in for a kiss, when they're interrupted, by Effie, "Come on you two, your being rude taking off on your own party." You could tell by her tone that mad that they were making her look bad.
Katniss began to walk with Effie, leaving Peeta behind. As he slowly followed behind them, he tried to think about what almost happen. Katniss had almost kissed him when the cameras weren't around. He debated what it could mean.
