The Stolen Power He Knows Not
by Roff
Harry Potter was wondering why so many bad things always happen to him on Halloween of every year.
Here it was, his fourth year, he was only fourteen and someone illegally entered his name in the cup to force him to compete in the dangerous Triwizard Tournament against three seventeen year old students. At 17 in the wizarding world you're considered an adult. Another Halloween catastrophe ready to happen, he thought to himself.
Harry doesn't remember all of his earliest Halloweens, such as his first one when he was just three months old. For that matter, he doesn't remember his second Halloween either when he was fifteen months old. However, that Halloween was the night his parents were killed by Voldemort and Harry somehow defeated the dark lord when he turned his wand on the then toddler Harry.
Harry always believed that his parents, or at least his mum, did something to protect him from Voldemort's Killing Curse and that was how he miraculously survived. He was called the Boy-Who-Lived because no one had ever survived the Killing Curse before, especially when Voldemort cast it on you.
When Harry went to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for his first year at eleven years of age, he did not go there packed with magical power. He really was just a student of slightly above average power and very little knowledge of magic given how he was raised by his hateful, non-magical relatives.
This was shown when he fought the troll to save Hermione on his first Halloween at the castle. He was purely physical in his approach. He jumped on the troll's back and shoved his wand up its nose. Did he cast a spell with it at that point? No. It was Ron, who was raised in a magical home and around magic his entire life that cast the spell to stop the angry troll.
Then when he went after the stone at the end of his first year, he still did not use his wand. Once again he was physical when he attacked Quirrell. The possessed professor was trying to choke him when Harry grabbed his hand to pry him off. Somehow Quirrell's hand started turning black quickly as if it was dying and that made him stop strangling Harry. The professor backed off and started wondering what kind of magic the boy used on him.
Harry, even more desperate, was thinking he needed do the same thing to some place more vital than the man's hand so he hurried and put his hands on Quirrell's face. It too turned black as if dying. Harry didn't dare let go because if he did he was afraid he himself would be killed. The rest of Quirrell's body turned black too as it seemed to just dry up and age until he was basically a skeleton with dried skin. He was definitely dead.
Harry didn't know how that happened but he felt more magically powerful after that for some reason. It also caused Voldemort to stop possessing Quirrell. His spirit form left before Harry's strange magic could effect it.
In Harry's second year on Halloween, the Chamber of Secrets was opened again after fifty years. At the end of the year he rescued Ginny Weasley in the Chamber after fighting a monstrous basilisk. Did he use his wand? No. He used a sword which went through the roof of the mouth of the basilisk and into its brain, killing it.
Harry's arm was pierced by a basilisk fang that shot him full of venom during the exchange but somehow he survived again. It was painful at first but the pain went away when Fawkes the phoenix cried on the wound and healed it.
Third year came around and they were attacked by dementors on the train to Hogwarts. A dementor tried to suck out Harry's soul but it suddenly stopped and left like it's robe was on fire. It could not get away from the boy fast enough. It fled and took the other dementors with it.
Halloween revealed an escaped mad-man from Azkaban was in the castle with all the kids. Everyone seemed to think that Sirius Black was after Harry to kill him. Of course, he found out later that Sirius was innocent. Not only that but he also discovered Sirius was his godfather who only escaped to protect him.
At the end of the year, Harry and Sirius were attacked by over one hundred dementors. Using a time turner, Harry and Hermione went back in time and ended up saving them. Harry was taught how to cast a patronus that same year by Professor Lupin but against so many he wasn't sure.
He wished he had the power to do this and like a dream he was given it from the ground and the atmosphere. He stepped away from Hermione toward where the dementors were attacking and soaked in a good bit of magic from his surroundings. He could feel it powering him up.
When he cast his patronus, the shining, large white Prongs chased every dementor away from there quickly, sending them fleeing in all directions.
Hermione couldn't see him gaining power. That part was invisible, so she was asking how he managed to do that with the patronus. He wasn't sure so just made something up like he knew he could because he saw himself do it before they went back in time. He was positive he should keep this strange ability secret, even from his best friends.
It was after that point that Harry started paying closer attention to the things that kept happening to him. He realized that in his first year he must have taken all of Quirrell's magic but the professor's possession by Voldemort was what caused him to turn black and die so quickly during that exchange. Voldemort was retreating from the parts of Quirrell's body where Harry was touching it leaving it to turn black.
Then when Harry drained all of Quirrell's magic completely, Voldemort gave up his host body and fled causing Quirrell's entire body to turn black and die. Possession will kill a body once it is no longer needed as a host. This is what Harry discovered when he looked it up. Dumbledore also provided that same information.
In his second year, Harry must have taken the magic from the basilisk venom once he was injected with it.
He felt the venom moving through his blood stream all through his body. It was very painful and the pain from the puncture in his arm was too until it was healed by Fawkes. He never felt the phoenix tears go throughout his body like the venom did, but somehow he still survived.
He was beginning to think that he had an extra power no one else had, at least no one he knew. He could soak up magic somehow. He just needed to be able to do that consciously when he called on it. It worked when he wished for it so he should be able to call it to him. He was already a good bit more powerful than when he first came to Hogwarts. His adventures and soaking in magical power had made sure of that.
He would have to see if the gift would help him during the tasks of the tournament.
During the first task of the Triwizard Tournament, Harry found out he would be facing a mother dragon who was nesting. He learned that there was very little else in the world more protective or dangerous than a nesting mother dragon.
Since she was to be a mother with little ones to take care of, Harry was sure he didn't want to hurt the dragon. If he stole her magic that would likely kill her or at the very least severely harm her. He then began wondering if he could just borrow magic temporarily.
Once he started thinking in that direction, he immediately went out to see if he could accomplish it. After several hours of experimentation, what he eventually discovered was that magic worked pretty much the same, no matter what type of magic you used. It was all about intention and will power.
To borrow magic temporarily, he merely needed to intend to do that rather than siphoning all the magic off for himself permanently. He had accidentally took magic permanently before when he was younger and didn't understand how that worked.
However, since he realized what was happening, he now could control it. He had strengthened his magic even more by pulling magic from the air, the castle, and the grounds. Hogwarts sat on the intersection of three ley lines so the area was saturated with magic.
Harry used that to his advantage and made himself very powerful. He had to stop at one point though when he reached what appeared to be a wall within himself. He imagined it was due to his age and his body's lack of maturity to handle more.
He decided to wait and let his body adjust to what he already had accumulated. Once it matured more, he could then permanently siphon more magic. However, for the tournament he worked on borrowing magic temporarily.
He found out that it was easier to do if he just used his body as a conduit. So instead of using his own magic, he could call on outside magic and just let it flow through him using a spell of his choosing.
When it was his turn to face his dragon, he walked out and was immediately attacked with fire from the Hungarian Horntail's mouth. He quickly ducked behind the nearest big rock and waited. The dragon seemed determined to not give him any opportunity to mount a defense or offense. She just kept pelting the rock he was behind with dragon fire.
Harry heard the audience in the stands gasp when the dragon almost burned him. Getting an idea, he decided to go with his plan and borrow a little power from the ley lines.
Behind his rock with dragon fire threatening to turn it to slag, Harry pulled a good bit of magic all at once from the ground. Once he had it flowing through him, he put all the extra magic into a giant shield and stood up to face the dragon.
The dragon followed him with her fire breath and pelted his shield as he stepped out from behind the boulder. The audience gasped even louder when they saw it. However, if you paid closer attention, you could see that the fire was being redirected by the shield. The dragon saw this too.
She stopped her fire breath and just stared at the wizard who could stand against her flames. As soon as she stopped, Harry dropped the shield and with the borrowed magic still flowing through him, he used the rest of it, along with some of his own, to cast an extremely powerful stunner.
The spell that came out of his wand was the deepest color red for a stunner anyone had ever seen. It was bigger than a normal stunner too. The spell hit the mother dragon in the chest and she immediately fell over, out cold, hitting the rocky ground with a big thud.
Harry stopped the magic draw and let the extra go back into the ley lines. He then calmly tucked his wand back into his wand holster as he strode toward the dragon eggs. He had to pass the mother dragon to get to the eggs so he stopped and patted her on her head before continuing on.
He picked up the golden egg as he was directed to do from the instructions given and looked it over really well before deciding to move on and end his task. He turned and sent the mother dragon a powerful enervate to help wake her from the stunner before he exited the arena to an awaiting Madam Pomfrey who insisted on checking him over for any injuries.
The dragon slowly raised up and shook her big head to clear it. She then looked around for the wizard. When she couldn't detect him anywhere she went over to check on her eggs.
Turns out all the other champions were injured in one way or another. Harry, the youngest, was the only one without a scratch on him.
The audience and judges were still in shock that a single 14 year old was powerful enough to produce a shield to block dragon fire and cast a stunner to take out the dragon. Normally, it took many wizards and witches working together and casting a stunner all at the same time to stun a dragon. They all just witnessed a single person accomplish it and he's not even an adult yet.
Harry would have received straight 10's for his performance if it wasn't for Karkaroff, the judge and headmaster from Durmstrang. He heavily favored his own student, Viktor Krum, and didn't seem to care that everyone could plainly see he was an unfair judge.
There was a yule ball during Christmas break that Dumbledore and McGonagall tried to insist he needed to get a date for so he could attend and represent being one of the champions. Harry, however, refused to attend the dance. He certainly wasn't about to ask anyone to be his date. He wasn't ready for that.
There was nothing in the rule book about the yule ball or that it was a requirement based on the magical contract they were holding over his head and forcing him to compete in the tournament. They weren't happy about it when he refused to change his mind. They also weren't forthcoming about their reasons for insisting he go to the dance when he asked for an explanation as to why it was so important.
He told them that if they can't provide a solid reason why he needs to attend the dance then he saw no reason to change his mind. Plus, tradition was certainly not a good enough reason especially when Harry only planned to do the bare minimum for the contest. Only what the contract required and nothing more he explained.
Ron turned on him when his name came out of the goblet. He believed that Harry cheated and entered himself no matter how much Harry denied it. Even when Harry explained what Moody said in the room with the other champions about it taking a strong Confundus charm above the level of a fourth year, Ron refused to believe him.
He, of course, changed his tune when he saw Harry face the dragon in the first task. He approached Harry with his hat in hand, so to speak, and apologized for not believing him.
Harry decided to forgive him since he knew Ron was well aware of how powerful he had become. So he was plenty powerful enough to confound the goblet, however, it still hurt that Ron wouldn't believe him when he swore he didn't put his name in the goblet.
Harry decided to keep a close eye on his friend after that. He was never too sure how much he could trust Ron until he somehow managed to prove himself again. Ron was young and had a really big problem with jealousy. He would need to get a handle on it before it damaged their relationship permanently.
During the second task of the tournament, the champions had to find their hostage and rescue them from the bottom of the cold Black Lake during a Scottish February winter. Harry had no idea who they used to be his hostage but he figured that even if they used Malfoy he would still go down and rescue him since it was part of the tournament rules and contract.
Luckily, he saw Malfoy in the stands sitting with the other Slytherins so that ruled him out. However, he did not see Hermione or Ron. Harry turned to the other champions who were all wearing swimming costumes with nothing else while Harry was dressed in jeans, shirt, and jacket. They were obviously cold while he wasn't'.
"Cedric, who did you take to the ball?" he asked the Hogwarts champion as they waited in the freezing cold.
"Cho."
"Thanks," he said looking around for Cho but did not see her. "Who did you take, Viktor?" he asked the Durmstrang champion.
"Hermowninny."
"Thanks," he said nodding his head. "And you, Fleur?" he asked the Beauxbatons champion.
"Roger Davies."
Harry looked and saw Roger in the stands.
"Then who did they use for your hostage?" he asked her confused.
She gasped. "I have not been able to find my little sister!" she replied excitedly looking back up in the stands at her parents and still not seeing her.
"Ah, makes sense," he said to her then turned back to the water. "Well, Ron, I guess you'll be glad I came and got you," he said to himself as they readied themselves for the start of the second contest.
When the cannon blast, manned by Mr. Filch, went off, Harry watched and noticed that Cedric and Fleur both used the Bubble-Head Charm to breathe under water. It covered their heads completely. Viktor did some weird half-transfiguration and turned his upper body into a shark head and gills so he could breathe under water.
Harry had prepared for this task quite well. When he was looking for ways to breathe under water the Bubble-Head Charm was the first thing he found to use. It seemed fairly efficient but it didn't provide a fast way to move through the water. It also didn't prevent you from getting wet. The Black Lake was going to be extremely cold in February so staying dry would be even better.
Eventually he worked it out. He used his extra power to cast the Bubble-Head Charm but made it big enough and strong enough to encapsulate his entire body. Then he had to figure out a way to make himself move over land and in the water.
With more work, he came up with a way to stick part of his wand through the bubble so he could use wind to propel him in the direction he wanted to go. The bubble was made to seal itself around his wand so no water could get in. If he wanted to change direction then he rotated the bubble with his wand to the desired side and kept going.
On the shore of the Black Lake Harry calmly took out his wand after he watched the other champions go down into the dark water. He then cast his modified Bubble-Head Charm to create a strong bubble that surrounded his entire body completely.
There were gasps from the audience.
Then when Harry stuck part of his wand through the bubble and propelled himself up and forward over the water, they all became very quiet. No one had ever seen anyone do this before. It even took the announcer several seconds before he could say anything.
They all watched as Harry flew in his bubble over the water until he got pretty far out there and stopped. Then when he moved his wand so that it was above his head they were all watching intently to see what he did next.
Suddenly, Harry in his bubble shot off quickly straight down into the water. It made a good splash when it hit the water and sunk down out of sight.
The audience could no longer see what Harry was doing but he had the location of the hostages pegged quite well. He came down in the water almost directly over them, making adjustments to his direction as needed.
When he was level with them, he saw all the ones he was expecting. There was Cho, Hermione, Ron, and a young Veela girl that must be Fleur's little sister.
Harry looked around for the other champions but they had not made it yet. He decided to wait. He could care less about winning. It was more important to make sure the hostages remained safe. For now, they all appeared to be under some sort of stasis spell.
He looked around some more and noticed several Merpeople were swimming around with their tridents. He decided they must be watching out for the hostages too.
Eventually, Cedric showed up and cut Cho loose. He looked at Harry and tapped his watch. Harry waved him off. Viktor showed up next and took Hermione. He just bit through what had her tied down and took off without a look back. He was obviously anxious to get back within the time limit.
Harry waited a good while but Fleur never showed up.
Making up his mind Harry cut Ron loose then cast his modified Bubble-Head Charm to surround his entire body in a bubble. The air the charm provided pushed all the water out as it was created. Ron woke up once he was no longer in the water. He blinked and looked over at Harry before looking around at his bubble.
He then slowly started floating up to the surface.
Harry then cut the little girl loose and gave her a modified Bubble-Head Charm too. She also woke up when she was no longer in the water. When she started floating up to the surface, one of the mermen told Harry, "Only one!" and threatened him with a trident.
"But Fleur didn't make it," Harry answered. "Do you know where she is?"
"Grindylows," he answered simply and nodded his head.
Harry quickly went up to the surface and used his wand to send Ron and the little girl to the shore. He then cast a point-me spell to locate Fleur. It showed her still in the water.
Adjusting his wand, Harry went back under toward where his spell pointed. He looked frantically around for Fleur as he sped through the water. He was about ready to give up when he saw her suspended in the water between some plant growth on the bottom of the lake and the surface.
She was fighting the grindylows with all her might. Her Bubble-Head Charm was ripped to shreds and she had bite marks and scratches on her body from their attacks.
Putting on a burst of speed, Harry ran right into Fleur and pushed her forward and up toward the surface as fast as he could go. This caused the grindylows to fall away behind them and return to the bottom of the lake, especially when they became airborne. They could not survive for long out of the water due to the necessity to breathe.
When they came out of the water with Fleur laying on the top of the outside of the bubble, she instinctively held on when they became airborne. She was sucking in big gulps of air as they flew to the bank of the lake.
The audience was shocked when the bubble came flying out of the water with Fleur on top of it. It was also interesting to see several grindylows letting go of Fleur and falling back into the lake.
Once Harry was standing upright on the edge of the lake, he removed his bubble and caught Fleur in his arms as she dropped down. Fleur automatically wrapped her arms around Harry's neck. Harry then carried her toward Madam Pomfrey who was already heading their way.
It was the first and only time during the entire task that he got wet.
"I've got her, Mr. Potter," Pomfrey told him as she used magic to float her out of his arms and toward the medical tent.
"What happened to her?" asked a still wet Hermione as a few who didn't see his exit from the lake turned to hear his answer.
"Grindylows," he said drying himself off with his wand.
"Oh!" she said shocked, then seemed to remember something. "Harry, you might want to let Ron and Gabrielle out of their bubbles. No one has been able to dispel them yet."
"Where are they?"
"Follow me," she told him.
Harry cast a drying charm at Hermione as he followed her. She thanked him with a quick turn of her head looking back at him.
Hermione took him over to a group of people who were casting spells at the two in the bubbles but nothing seemed to work.
"Allow me," Harry announced as they walked up. "It's a modified Bubble-Head Charm that I made sure a simple cancelling spell would not work on it, especially at the wrong time."
Everyone stepped back out of the way as Harry walked up to his two hostages. Ron looked at him and Harry could see the relief on his face. The little girl was just watching carefully with big eyes.
"Sorry about that," he told them. "I'll have you out in a jiffy."
Harry silently cast the counter charm with only a flick of his wand toward the bubble. He released Gabrielle first then released Ron. Everyone watched as the big bubbles just started disintegrating to nothing as they disappeared.
Gabrielle walked up to him and asked, "Are you Harry Potter?"
"Yes, I am. Is your name Gabrielle?" She nodded as Harry cast a drying charm and then a warming charm on her.
"Merci. It's cold out here!"
"Are you okay?" Harry asked.
"I'm fine now. That was a neat bubble you made!"
"Thanks. Madam Pomfrey is seeing to your sister," he said pointing at the medical tent. "She was being attacked by grindylows when I found her. She'll be right as rain though by the time Madam Pomfrey finishes."
"I better go check on her. Thanks, Harry!"
"You're welcome, Gabrielle," he said with a smile.
She smiled back and went to go see her sister as her parents both thanked Harry for saving their daughters before they followed Gabrielle into the medical tent.
Harry checked on Ron, but it looked like someone, likely Hermione, had already cast a drying charm on him.
Once they heard the scores and Fleur was patched up, they all went to enjoy a nice hot meal in the Great Hall. While Harry did not come in ahead of Cedric and Viktor in the task he was awarded extra points for staying behind to make sure all hostages were rescued and even rescued the third champion. The extra points kept him in the lead.
Everyone was still talking about Harry's bubbles and how he could fly.
The year continued on and Harry took advantage of his position in the tournament as best he could by learning all that he could learn. He studied and practiced a lot on his own but also got help from his friends when they weren't busy with classes or homework.
Harry was excused from end of semester exams so took advantage and quit going to Astronomy, History of Magic, and Potions. He had enough on his plate without having to deal with Binns and Snape. The late night Astronomy classes did not work with his new schedule either.
However, he did attend Herbology and Runes along with his wanded classes which were Transfiguration, Charms, and Defense. He knew he could always use help in those areas to be ready for whatever the tournament threw at him.
The professors were quite impressed with his power and the ease in which he could cast the spells after he learned them.
Dobby the house elf was definitely the most help. Not long after Harry's name came out of the cup, Dobby told Harry all about the Come and Go Room, also known as the Room of Requirement. Harry ended up using that room every chance he got and even spent many a night in there. Dobby would bring him food when he needed to eat and Harry could ask for a bed when he needed to sleep.
He discovered that the room provided anything you needed. If you need books on a subject then it would provide the best ones. He used part of his training and learning in the room to figure out how to become an animagus. With his extra time over the year, the room's help, and Harry's extra power, he was able to accomplish it just before the last task.
Dobby stayed with him in case he had any trouble when he first started trying to transform into his animagus. That way he could get his Great Harry Potter to Professor McGonagall or Madam Pomfrey if he got stuck.
Because Harry was so powerful, wandless magic came easier for him too. He was already able to pull magic to him wandlessly. In fact, that's the only way he had ever used that ability. Once he realized he was doing that wandlessly he worked on learning other spells without his wand. With his extra power it was not as difficult to accomplish.
He was a long way off from learning all his spells wandlessly but he made an excellent start and had a good handle on a method to help him learn quickly. This allowed him to figure out wanded spells for wandless application if he had enough time to think it through.
They had turned the Quidditch pitch into a giant maze with very high hedgerows. So, when it was time for the third and final task of the Triwizard Tournament, he was the first one to enter the maze since he was leading in points.
The maze was also full of dangerous animals and traps. At the center of the maze the Triwizard Trophy sat on a table in a small clearing. The goal of the last task was to be the first one to pick up the cup. Whoever was first to the cup would be the winner no matter your point standing from the previous two tasks.
Since Harry was allowed to go first, that gave him a few minutes head start. The other champions would then enter at their appointed time.
Harry was frowning when he entered the maze because Professor Moody had pointed with his finger the way he was to go. He did it so Harry was the only one who could see him pointing. Harry was having a difficult time believing Moody would cheat like that.
However, he had a task to finish so he put that thought aside and focused on what he needed to do. He stopped once he was inside the maze where no one could see him and set his plan in motion.
With great concentration Harry changed into his animagus, a black phoenix with deep purple markings, that were more prevalent in the plumage. It took him almost a minute to accomplish the transformation. He was still working on getting it closer to 1 second. He had only accomplished the final transformation a few days previous. He had much more he needed to discover about his animagus abilities.
Taking flight, Harry flew above the hedges where the audience could see him. However, it was nighttime and with his coloring they could barely make him out. They thought it was just a large bird that had flown out of the maze.
Harry flew over the hedges and toward the center looking for the Triwizard Trophy. He saw several things in the maze he was happy he didn't have to deal with. He kept flying and looking until he spotted it.
He then quickly landed in front of the small table it was sitting on and changed back into himself. That only took about 15 seconds because changing back to what he was accustomed to was a lot easier.
Looking around at everything before he touched the trophy, he spotted a large acromantula a long ways behind him in the hedges but it had spotted him. It decided to skitter his way as fast as it could go.
Deciding he should not wait any longer, Harry grabbed the trophy and immediately felt the pull behind the naval from a portkey.
He was not expecting that at all.
As he left the maze, the hedges started un-growing themselves and returned back into the ground. Cedric, who was in second place, was just entering the maze when it started shrinking. The other champions from Durmstrang and Beauxbatons never even got to start.
Hagrid and others quickly entered the area and started gathering up the animals and dismantling the traps. Meanwhile Dumbledore and the other judges were looking around for Harry to appear in front of them.
They waited but he did not show up.
Removing the trophy from the table was to start the maze deconstruction and the portkey on the trophy was to bring the champion back to the staging area. So where was Harry?
He was certainly not where he was supposed to be.
Why did the trophy take him somewhere else?
Harry found himself in a small graveyard after the portkey ended and deposited him on his feet. He quickly set the trophy on the ground behind a headstone that was near because he strongly suspected this was not part of the tournament and he wanted both hands free.
With a flick of his wrist, his wand dropped into his hand.
Looking around at all the headstones, and then at all the property around the cemetery, he spotted a large but old manor up on a hill. There was a caretaker's cottage at the edge of the large property but down the hill away from the manor. It was also a good distance from the graveyard.
Coming back to his immediate surroundings, Harry spotted an abnormally large cauldron not too far from where he was standing. In was in an open area with no graves except those surrounding it. The closest grave to the cauldron was marked with the name Tom Riddle and had a large statue for the headstone.
Suddenly, Harry saw a red light of a stunner out of the corner of his eye, but it was too late to do anything. He dropped to the ground out cold.
When he woke, he was tied using the Incarcerous spell to the large statue standing over the grave of Tom Riddle.
He noticed the large cauldron was bubbling with a big fire under it. He saw Peter Pettigrew, also known as Wormtail, preparing what looked like a potion in it. Then Harry watched as Wormtail went and picked up a bundle that appeared to be a blanket.
He took it to the cauldron and dumped what looked to be a deformed baby into the hot liquid. He then just tossed the blanket aside. Next he started adding what looked to be final ingredients to the potion. He added a bone from the Riddle grave Harry was suspended above. He also amazingly cut off his left hand and let it fall into the potion, whimpering as he did so.
Wormtail pressed the bleeding stub in his clothes to hinder the flow of blood, as he walked toward Harry with the knife. Harry was catching on now though. From the words Wormtail was speaking it became evident this was a ritual to return Voldemort to a body.
He wasn't sure what Wormtail was going to do with that knife but there was little he could do at the moment. The only option he had left was to take his magic, but he wanted him alive so he could use the traitor to free his godfather.
Harry began slowly siphoning Wormtail's magic so he wouldn't notice at first. He wanted to go slow so he would make him a squib and not have him die from losing all his magic. Unfortunately, Wormtail had reached him before he could finish, so Harry watched as the traitor cut his arm and collected some blood on the knife.
Harry continued to siphon the traitors magic but left enough for him to be a squib. Harry found he had plenty of room to take on the man's magic permanently. Another year had almost passed so his body had matured even more, providing more room for additional magic.
Also, when Harry used his body as a conduit for the tournament tasks, which is when he borrowed magic temporarily, it actually expanded his magical core even more, making him capable of storing even more magic.
Wormtail was also in a great deal of pain so didn't even notice his magic leaving him. He was never all that powerful anyway.
Wormtail put Harry's blood in the cauldron and said the final words of the ritual before he stepped away holding his arm with the missing hand. He dropped heavily next to a headstone in pain.
The cauldron billowed with dark smoke before a tall man with a snakelike face appeared where the cauldron once stood. He was naked so turned to his servant and demanded his wand. Wormtail lumbered over and handed the bone white wand to his master who used it to conjure himself a robe that seemed to be made out of black smoke that coalesced into the blackest of cloth.
Then he used Wormtail's dark mark to summon his followers. They started appearing in the small clearing in an oval pattern, as if they all had a place of their own in the circle. Voldemort waited for them all to arrive before he addressed them.
Harry realized he needed to quit being a spectator and do something about his situation. He knew the spell Relashio would release him from the Incarcerous, but he did not know it wandlessly.
Harry calmed himself down and began concentrating as Voldemort continued yammering on to his followers, giving a grand old speech. He worked through how you cast it with a wand then reassembled it in his mind on how to do it wandlessly.
Voldemort even gave Wormtail a new hand made of silver. This took away the pain right away but he was still unaware he was now a squib. He never joined the others in the circle. He stayed out of the way and admired his new hand with reference and awe.
By the time Voldemort turned to deal with Harry, he saw him release himself from the ropes and drop down to the ground. He now stood on the grave of the dark lord's father. Voldemort's eyes widened a little at the boy's ability.
"Resourceful, for one so young," Voldemort exclaimed in his high pitched, raspy voice.
Harry just stared at him. He then figured that Wormtail had his wand and not Voldemort. The dark lord was not in his new body yet when Harry was stunned. Harry simply summoned his wand with his hand still by his side. It took very little movement, just a finger wiggle, to do the charm, given Harry's power.
Summoning his wand wandlessly was also one of the first spells he learned and mastered.
The holly and phoenix feather wand came out of Wormtail's pocket and zipped quickly into Harry's hand before anyone knew that he summoned it, but Voldemort noticed he now had his wand again.
"Wandless magic, Harry? You are definitely resourceful!" he exclaimed.
"Oh, I picked up a few tricks since we last met, Tom. Impressed?" asked Harry.
"A little, but don't call me that," he replied in a low voice. "I am Lord Voldemort, descendant from Slytherin!" he insisted viciously.
"You may be a descendant from Slytherin, I'll give you that, but you are not a pureblood like your stupid followers who think that is so important. You're a half blood and the son of a squib and a muggle. At least my parents were both magical."
"I'm going to kill you for that, Harry Potter. You should not have brought on your demise so quickly with those words. I was going to let you live a little longer but not anymore. Now you will have to die."
"I don't believe you have enough power to kill me, Tom. I'm more powerful than you."
"You? A fourteen year old? More powerful than me?"
"Yes, but it never hurts to have a little more," Harry told him with a smile and lilt to his voice.
"Do not interfere!" he turned and told his Death Eaters before turning back to Harry. "You will suffer!" Voldemort yelled and started to cast the Cruciatus curse but Harry had already started using his special ability when Voldemort turned away from him to speak to his followers.
He did it quickly this time though. He still wanted to leave Voldemort as a squib but not take any chances with him. Then a strange thing happened when he started draining him quickly.
Voldemort bent over in great pain, not able to finish his curse at all. Harry continued to drain him as fast as he could. As it turned out, Voldemort's new body was a magical construct so when most of the magic was drained from him, the body started failing. When Harry finished, it disintegrated into little points of light that then winked out of existence.
Voldemort was no more. He used up his one and only chance to be reborn with a new body. He simply chose the wrong teenage wizard for the ritual.
The Death Eaters were shocked at what Harry did to their master. They were a bit slow to react but they quickly started to mount an offense. They were raising their wands when Harry reacted quickly to the threat.
Harry had more magic than he could hold so he turned to the Death Eaters and cast one spell using the excess and some of his own considerable amount. He cast Bombarda Maxima at the base of the headstones closest to them.
A few of them managed to put up a shield to protect themselves but the power behind the spell was too much for them.
The resulting explosion of stone ripped through the shields and all the Death Eaters, killing them instantly. In fact, the stone shards went right through their bodies before coming to a stop further behind them. Their heads managed to not get very damaged in the explosion since the explosion was close to ground level sending the stone through the main part of their bodies.
With little damage to their faces, it made it easier for them to be recognized later.
Harry turned toward Wormtail who saw the whole thing. He was trying to use his wand to subdue Harry like he did before but nothing was happening. He then tried to turn back into a rat but failed at that too.
"What did you do to me, Harry?" he asked panicked.
"Me? I didn't do anything other than kill your Death Eater friends. It was you guys that messed up. Whatever that ritual was, it didn't work as planned. It obviously had a flaw somewhere. It looked like all his magic just collapsed and killed him for good this time." Harry wasn't about to let Wormtail know of his special ability so he blamed it on the ritual.
"But I no longer have my magic! I can't use my wand and I can't change into my rat form!" he exclaimed worriedly and in a panic.
"I guess that's what you get for messing with questionable rituals. At least your still alive. It killed Tom and evidently it took your magic with him since you performed the ritual."
"But… but… " he started.
"No buts. Let's go. You're coming with me to free Sirius, Traitor," Harry told him then pointed his wand at him.
"They'll lock me up!"
"Too bad! You deserve it for what you've done."
"No!" he yelled and took off running.
Harry stunned him quickly with barely a flick of his wand and tied him up using Incarcerous. He dropped to the ground out cold in his trussed up state.
Harry walked over to Wormtail and held his hand low on top of his prisoner's back so the trophy portkey would touch his hand and Wormtail at the same time. He then summoned the trophy with the same hand.
When it flew into his fingers they both disappeared from the graveyard.
There was a lot of noise and the band started playing as soon as Harry and Wormtail landed with the trophy. They were cheering that Harry Potter won. Dumbledore and the others who noticed he brought someone with him and they were tied up, went to Harry to question him.
Harry explained to Dumbledore what happened using the same excuse he used with Wormtail to explain Voldemort's final demise.
Moody had run out of Polyjuice and ended up revealing he was actually Barty Crouch, Jr. who tried to kill Harry in front of everyone after he heard the story and realized his master was gone for good. Before Harry could even respond to the threat, Dumbledore blocked the spell he cast and then had him stunned and tied up before anyone could even blink. He was very fast for a man of his age, especially with spells.
After that threat was handled, Harry described where he was so Dumbledore made a portkey since he knew of the place and it took them and others there, including aurors. Madam Bones had a couple of aurors take Wormtail to the Ministry holding cells. She then went with Dumbledore and the others.
After Harry walked everyone through where everything happened and explained everything again, they cast several spells to collect evidence. They also collected the bodies of the dead Death Eaters in conjured bags.
They then went their separate ways. Harry and Dumbledore returned to Hogwarts and went up to his office. Professor McGonagall and the other professors had already ushered the students back to the castle and their dorm rooms while they were away.
"Professor," Harry asked as they sat down. "How did Voldemort not die completely and was able to come back from a ritual to a new body?"
"Well, Harry, Tom was very knowledgeable concerning the dark arts. He found a way to not die completely when his body was killed. This method of soul magic left his wraith behind until he could form himself another body. Fortunately, he could only do that once. The soul is not able to do that over and over again. He had one chance and it didn't work in his favor."
"I see."
"Harry," Dumbledore started after a pause and changed the subject, "there was a certified prophecy about you and the dark lord which states one of you will defeat the other in the end, so I doubt it could have been the ritual going wrong that caused his demise. Are you sure you didn't hit him with a spell?"
"Professor, I've been thinking more on that and I know Voldemort was intelligent, so him messing up a potion ritual for his new body would be hard to believe. I can't imagine how many times he and Wormtail went over it, given how important it would be to Tom."
Dumbledore nodded, agreeing.
"However," Harry continued, "it could be that since they stole some of my blood for the ritual, that may be the reason why it didn't work. After all my blood is different. You recall that it's been infused with both basilisk venom and phoenix tears in my second year. Given the oddness of that, I doubt my blood was the best choice for that ritual."
"Ah, that would make more sense when it comes to the prophecy. Well deduced, Harry."
"Professor, why is this the first time I'm hearing about this prophecy?" he asked a bit miffed.
"Alas, I was always concerned with telling you too soon. It would be quite a burden for anyone, much less a child. I was simply waiting to tell you until I thought it was the right time. It looks like I can share it with you easily now, especially since you've already fulfilled it."
"I certainly wouldn't mind hearing it, Professor, especially since it's about me."
After they listened to the prophecy using Dumbledore's pensieve and Harry had time to think about it some, Dumbledore asked him to stay a while longer.
"Harry, I have another question I would like an answer to, if you don't mind."
"I'll answer the best I can, Professor."
"How in Merlin's name did you get so powerful, Harry?" Dumbledore asked. "You weren't overly powerful as a baby and a child, but you certainly are now. Normally powerful witches and wizards are born powerful and their magic grows as they age reaching even higher levels. This is much the same way my magic came about."
"That, sir, is an excellent question. I wish I knew the answer myself. All I know is once I came here to school, my magic started growing and seem to grow even faster the older I became. After hearing the prophecy, I'm now stumped on what the power he knows not was. Is it my extra magical power or the fact my blood can mess up a ritual?"
"Well, prophecies are notorious for being vague until they are fulfilled. It looks like that power he knows not was your blood based on what we know now. I suppose if you had as much experience with dueling and spells as Tom then it could have been your extra power that took him down, but given you are just finishing fourth year and he had around 50 years more experience than you, especially in the darkest of arts, then your extra power would have been useless in a one on one fight given his talent and experience."
"I suppose you're right, sir. He was quite imposing when I had to face him."
"He was most definitely a very powerful wizard, but I suppose many will be saying the same about you, Harry, soon enough."
"Well, I won't go dark like him. I may be powerful, but I've always wanted just a simple life away from all the fame and notoriety."
"I don't think we have to worry about you going dark, Harry. I would never think that of you. As a matter of fact, I'm very proud of you and all you have accomplished."
"Thank you, sir. But, do you mind if we call it a night? I'm quite hungry."
"I suppose after all your activities you would be. Do I need to call an elf to get you some food? It is long after dinnertime."
"I think I'll just go by the kitchens and see if the elves have any leftovers, if that's alright with you, sir?"
"That'll work, Harry, and if there are no leftovers I'm sure they will be more than happy to whip up something for you quickly."
"They are always very helpful, aren't they?" Harry asked rhetorically but Dumbledore nodded anyway with a smile. "Goodnight, sir," Harry told him as he headed toward the door.
"Goodnight, Harry. Enjoy your food and a good night's rest."
"You too, sir."
The End
