Distractions

It was the next day. I never got the chance to go back online last night because I had to help Luke out in the diner. So here I was, outside Rory's house, waiting for her to open the door.

"Hey," Rory said as she opened the door. "How are you?"

"I'm fine," I said. "I came to use your internet connection, if that's alright?"

"Sure," Rory answered. "I was just about to do the same thing."

"Great," I replied, stepping inside. "So where do you want me?" I asked her. I didn't want to get in her way.

"How about my room?" Rory suggested. "You can keep me company."

"I'll be on the computer," I said to her as I followed her to her room.

"So will I," Rory laughed. "I meant your presence will keep me company."

"Oh, okay," I said finally understanding. "So where do I sit?"

"You take the bed," Rory said to me, "and I'll take the chair." Rory sat down in her armchair.

"Why aren't you sitting at your desk?" I asked her confused as I take my shoes off and sit on the bed facing Rory, my back against her headboard.

"I don't know," Rory replied as she grabs her laptop and set it on her lap. "Something different."

"Alright," I said as I turned my laptop on.

It took a few minutes to start up and I noticed that my angel was online.

Dodger: Hey

Blue-Eyed-Angel: Hey

Dodger: What are you up to?

Blue-Eyed-Angel: Nothing, you?

Dodger: Nothing

"Rory," I warned after she threw a soft toy at me. "Do you mind?"

"No," Rory said. "I don't mind."

"Occupy yourself," I told her. "Write your boyfriend a love letter."

"I don't know if I like him anymore," Rory said as she pouted. "Well, write your nonexistent boyfriend a love letter then."

"Fine," Rory huffed.

Blue-Eyed-Angel: So how's your new town? I noticed that you weren't online last night

Dodger: Yeah, I had to work

Blue-Eyed-Angel: Ooh in what industry?

Dodger: Food

Blue-Eyed-Angel: Hmm… I like food

Dodger: So do most humans

"Jess," Rory said as I threw the soft toy back at her.

"What?" I asked her confused.

"Now you're annoying me," Rory said, pouting once again.

"Am not," I said as I stuck my tongue out at her.

Blue-Eyed-Angel: Friends… do you have friends?

Dodger: Yeah why?

Blue-Eyed-Angel: They're so annoying

Dodger: You're telling me

Blue-Eyed-Angel: Hmm, we both have annoying friends

Dodger: So it seems

"I swear to god, Rory," I warned her. "If you throw that thing one more time…"

"You'll what," Rory said, cutting me off. "What are you going to do to me, Jess?"

"You don't want to know," I said. "Now be a good little girl."

Dodger: Sorry for that

Blue-Eyed-Angel: That's fine, I'm a little preoccupied

Dodger: Really with what?

Blue-Eyed-Angel: Community service

Dodger: Community service? … Did you get in trouble with the law or something?

Blue-Eyed-Angel: No figuratively… You take everything so literal

Dodger: Sorry, it's a little hard to guess your tone

Blue-Eyed-Angel: Ditto

Dodger: Ditto? … Who the hell says ditto?

Blue-Eyed-Angel: Normal people

"That's it," I said as the soft toy hit me in the head again. I closed my laptop and headed over to Rory. I closed her laptop and put it safely back on her desk, out of harm's way.

"Hey," Rory said to me. "I was using that."

"And I told you not to throw that toy at me again," I said. "You know you have to be punished right?"

"No," Rory whined. "I'll be good… I promise."

"Too late," I said as I tickled her.

"Jess. Stop. Please." Rory said in between laughs. "I'm. Sorry."

"Have you learned your lesson?" I asked, not letting up.

"No," Rory replied and I tickled her harder. "Okay. Yes. I've. Learnt. My. Lesson. Please. Stop. Jess."

"Good." I stopped tickling her. "Now don't do it again," I said as I hand her laptop back to her and head back over to the bed.

Blue-Eyed-Angel: You seem distracted too

Dodger: Yeah, sorry

Blue-Eyed-Angel: It's alright … So?

Dodger: So?

Blue-Eyed-Angel: This is boring… Why is this boring?

Dodger: We've gotten sick of each other… I'm guessing that the time apart didn't do us any good

Blue-Eyed-Angel: No, it doesn't seem that way

Dodger: So you're bored, what do you usually do when you are bored?

Blue-Eyed-Angel: I don't know… something fun

Dodger: Then do something fun

Blue-Eyed-Angel: Okay

"Jessie," Rory said to me.

"What?" I half snapped at her. "I told you not to annoy me."

"But it's fun," Rory said.

"What do you want?" I asked her.

"Let's get out of here," Rory suggested. "Get some fresh air."

"Why?" I asked her confused.

"Because," Rory replied. "I need fresh air."

I looked back at my laptop and notice my angel hasn't replied.

"Fine," I said as I closed my laptop. "You're so annoying, you know that?"

"Oh, I know," Rory said as she grabbed my hand and dragged me out of the house.

"Damn you," I said to Rory.

"What?" she asked me confused, our hands still entwined.

"You know that important question I was supposed to ask?" I said.

"Yeah," Rory replied, a small smile playing on her lips.

"Well… Wait, you distracted me on purpose," I said. "You distracted me so I couldn't ask them, didn't you?"

"Maybe," Rory replied.

"I can't believe you," I said.

"Do you not like me?" Rory asked me confused.

"Of course I like you," I said as I put my arm around her shoulders and pulled her close.

"Then that question shouldn't matter, should it?" Rory said.

"I… I guess not," I replied. "In recent light things have changed, but it's one of those questions that I'm going to regret if I don't ask… you know, a what if."

"Life's full of what if's," Rory said.

"But it doesn't have to be."

"I guess you're right," Rory said. "Well, in that case, I have something to do when we get back to the house as well."

"Really?" I asked her confused.

"Yeah," Rory said. "It's something I was waiting for them to bring back up… but you're right, it will always be a what if. I might as well check it out and then decide what I think."

"Good idea," I told Rory. "You remind me and I'll remind you, deal?"

"Deal," Rory said.

"So where are we going?" I asked her.

"The bridge," Rory said. "Where else?"

"Nowhere," I said as I pull her closer and kissed the top of her head.

So things have definitely changed, I was falling for Rory. I thought Rory could never compare to my angel, but as I haven't really talked to my angel in a while I've forgotten how much I liked her. Maybe I only liked her because there was no one else in my life… No, I liked her, really liked her. Liked? … Why the past tense already? I still liked… I still like my angel. Rory was failing in comparison to her only yesterday, but now… Damn, I really need to figure some things out.
