This is a very short story that takes place years before the events of the book occurred. It revolves around the Curtis family and what happens after a kid at school punches Ponyboy.

Ponyboy is severely injured after an act of bravery. He doesn't regret doing what he did, but will his brave action be his last?

Ponyboy is sick and he dreams of many things: Johnny Cade's corpse, a man with red hair, a woman dressed in green. All the while, his father sits at his side. Or: Ponyboy dreams of things that may or may not be real, may or may not have happened. Ghosts may or may not be there. In the end, it's family.

The second thing that Ponyboy thinks as he turns over, is that he should be in bed alone, and he isn't. Yet there's a body beside him that's long, firm, warm and as he blinks some of the sleep out of his vision, he realizes that it's none other than his ex, Dallas Winston. The night after a bar fight with someone else, it's a bit hard to have a talk with your ex who saved your ass.

Ponyboy and Johnny have a lively debate which ends in tragedy. Comic Justice demands the punishment of Two Bit, but what did Darry ever do to deserve the same? Life is never fair, it seems. Nor is Death, which comes panhandling along, not far behind as usual, Arrr.

His father's study used to be a sanctuary. Ponyboy enters it, looking for hope, for memories. He finds something very, very different about his future he didn't anticipate.

The cold he feels now is bone deep, not soul deep. Ponyboy has to cope with losing Dallas, for the second time.

Ponyboy's got an acceptance letter for NYU in his hands. All he wants to know is this, though: why can't Dallas go back to New York City? Dallas has to fill in the blanks of his life before Tulsa and why returning isn't so simple.

Michael Shepard's first year at Columbia is both more terrible and more wonderful than he could've anticipated.

Ponyboy has never been arrested before. That changes in 1967 after a rumble Tim Shepard calls. It's a really, really good thing that he isn't arrested alone.
