I know it's been ages since I've posted a chapter so here you go! This was just a thought that spiralled into some drabble basically.
Disclamer: Cassandra Clare owns The Mortal Instruments, not me.
Chapter 17: The Runaway and Him
I PACKED UP MY STUFF AND WALKED OUT THE DOOR. It was the middle of the night, everyone was asleep so there was no one there to stop me.
I had my ticket in my hand as I walked to the coach station which was 15 minutes away from my house.
I went inside the station and waited for 3 o'clock to come, it was only 30 minutes more anyway.
"How old are you, young lady?" I heard a female voice ask from beside me. I didn't even notice anyone sitting down.
"I'm 17." I replied.
"And what is it that you are doing here, so late at night?"
"I'm trying to rebuild my life."
"Well, you're seventeen, your life is yet to begin." She said.
"Little do you know… I've already done enough to want to rebuild."
"I'm sure." She said, obviously not believing me.
She then said goodbye and got up.
I didn't want to be what I was, the only way to change that was to disappear. My parents wouldn't care. They have their star. I will forever be in the shadow of my older brother.
After she was gone I just waited for my coach.
When it arrived I gave the driver my ticket and he let me in. There were only a few people who came on from the same station as me and there were only a few free seats left.
I sat near the back, next to the blonde haired guy who had his earphones in and his hood up. He looked pretty mysterious. Then I caught a glimpse of his neck. There was something there. It was a marking… not a tattoo but… a rune. Oh God I'm sat next to one of them. Before the coach began to leave I attempted to stand up. But then I was stopped by an arm grabbing me.
"Do you have a problem sitting next to me?" The man asked, pulling his earphones out with his other hand.
"Yes, that is if you give me one." I replied. The coach began to move and I sat back down, fastening my seatbelt.
He smirked. "I'm Jace."
"Clary." I decided not to give him my full name.
"So, what are you doing on a coach to L.A at this hour?"
"I could ask you the same thing." I retorted.
"Well, I have family up there and I wanted to surprise them."
"That's nice of you. I'm a runaway, I guess."
He looked confused. "Why would you run away? You look like you've had a nice life. Pretty chill."
I scoffed. "Well, looks can be very deceiving. To be honest, I don't even know why I'm talking to you."
"Well, I am stunningly attractive. Maybe that means you can trust me."
"You know, being arrogant like that is not such a great quality to have. At least not in my eyes."
"But it is to all other girls. I'm just too charming."
I rolled my eyes.
"I know what you are. And I think I can put together why you've run away."
"Oh really? Enlighten me then."
"You're a Shadowhunter. But I'm gonna hazard a guess and say that you don't like being one. So you've runaway because you don't want to live that life. And you probably think that you're replaceable. Do you have a sibling, by any chance?"
Okay, I was freaked out. "How do you know that?"
"Well, I was listening to my mother go on and on about how a short redheaded girl from New York had just run away and she found out because the mother of said girl just sent everyone a fire message telling them to keep a look out."
I sighed. "So they did notice, wow and the sun hasn't even risen yet."
"Why did you think they wouldn't? A beautiful girl like you missing in a household? Everyone would notice."
I frowned, "I'm not beautiful."
"Ohh yes you are."
"No, I'm not."
"Yeah you are."
"No, I'm not."
"Stop denying it."
"No –" He gave me this look so I just gave in. "Okay, fine."
"I don't think I could convince you to go back but… I don't know, at least tell your parents you're alright. They're probably worried sick, Clary."
"Why should I even bother?"
"Because, no matter how much you believe that there is no one who cares about you… There is always going to be someone who's gonna miss you. No matter what. And someone like you… I don't know you very well but I can tell you're an awesome person, so there's bound to be someone at home who's wondering 'why didn't she say goodbye?' Just think about them."
I sighed. He was right. Simon, I never said goodbye to Simon. And despite everything, my brother. He's always been there for me. He'd never once failed me and he'd never once let me feel worthless. He saw me for me and not how good or bad a Shadowhunter I was. "Alright. I'll call them in the morning. I'm just too tired."
He seemed to accept it.
"Do you mind…?" I tilted my head to his shoulder.
"No, not at all."
I rested my head on his shoulder and fell asleep.
So it was pretty short but thanks for reading!
