Chapter 22: Heartbreak Dead Ahead
(Joe's POV)
"Hello?"
I took a deep breath rubbing my temple before giving my quiet trembling answer. "Hey, Chloe. It's Joe."
I heard her take in a sharp breath on the other line before she spoke. "What do you want?"
"To apologize," I began softly trying to think about my words carefully. "I never should have called you a bitch." Good start, I thought to myself. Now keep going. Don't ruin this. "You aren't one and it's impossible for you to ever be one."
She was silent for a moment or two and I was expecting the worst. I was expecting the line to go dead or for her to yell at me.
"You want me to forgive you?" She questioned softly moments later.
"Yes," I said slowly scared of her reply.
"I forgive you, Joe." She said. "Do you want to know why?"
I nodded, but then realized she couldn't see me so out loud I said "Yeah,"
"Because, even though we aren't together anymore I can't live without you. I need you in my life." Her voice was quiet and pleading.
How the hell am I supposed to respond to that? Honestly. "Yeah, I feel the same." I replied swallowing the lump in my throat.
"So we're friends?" She questioned.
Now it was my turn to be silent for a moment as I gathered my thoughts. Even though I love her I couldn't not have her in my life, so friends was the closet thing. "Yeah, We're friends."
"Okay, great!" I could hear the smile in her voice and I couldn't stop the one that formed on my own face. "I gotta go do that history paper, yawn. Bye!"
"Bye Chloe," I muttered and the line went dead. "I love you," I added.
"How'd it go?" I looked up to see Mandy in Nikki in the doorway. I shrugged my shoulders. The next thing I knew they were sitting on my bed.
"Tell us everything," Mandy demanded with a soft smile.
"There's nothing to tell really," That was all that I was planning on saying. However, when I saw the looks they were giving me I could tell they knew there was something to tell. "We're friends. She wants me in her life." I explained.
"Aw that's good," Nikki smiled. I stared at her. "It's bad?"
"Duh," I replied.
Mandy and Nikki exchanged looks of pure confusion. "We're confused."
"I can't handle this!" I said suddenly. They just stared at me waiting for me to continue. "It's going to kill me to see her with him. She always does this to me!"
"Does what?" Nikki questioned.
"For the past two years she has played with my heart."
Mandy exchanged a nervous glance at Nikki before looking at me. "What are you saying Joe?" Her looked scared.
I took a deep breath and said the words I never thought I would. "I'm done. I'm done giving my heart to her. Me and Chloe are over. For good!"
(One Month Later)
(Nick's POV)
I could tell that this seriously bugged Joe. Seeing Chloe and Greg together tore him apart, even if he did try to move on. Greg knew Joe still loves her, he knows how much this hurts him, so of course he just has to rub it in his face. Great best friend, huh? As for Chloe she has yet to realize that when the day comes and Greg dumps her, I don't mean to sound negative I just know Greg, she can't run to Joe. Joe has remained strong in saying him and Chloe are done. If she wants him back she's really going ot have to fight.
I let out a small sigh as I pulled into an empty parking space. Nikki and I were meeting Chloe at Starbucks for some coffee.
"Tired?" Nikki giggled.
"Sorta," I admitted cutting the engine. We both got out of the car, grateful there was no paparazzi. We made our way into the nearly empty coffee shop and found Chloe. She was sitting in a back booth sipping whatever it is she's drinking. When she spotted us she smiled and waved. Nikki went ahead of me to the table while I went and got our drinks.
(Chloe's POV)
I smiled as Nick slid into the booth next to Nikki. "So how are things going with you two?" It felt as though it'd been forever since I hung out with my best friends. The boy blushed lightly at my question but neither one answered. I smiled softly and spoke. "Hold onto him, Nikki. The Lucas boys are real catches. You'll regret it if you ever let them go."
She looked up at me and smiled softly. "Speaking from experience?"
Looking down at my cup I nodded slowly. "I have constantly played with his heart." I began quietly still not looking up. "In all the times we've taken breaks never, not once, did he ever date another girl. He's always there for me when I need him."
"Not this time,"
My head shot up as I looked at Nick. "What'd you say Nick?"
Nick cleared his throat before he spoke. "Joe's done with it. He said so. He said he's tired of having his heart messed with and then having it broken over and over." He paused. "Look Chloe, Joe loves you still but if for some reason you ever want him back you're really going to have to put up a fight."
I looked back down at my coffee cup as tears welled up in my eyes. I really screwed up this time, letting him go.
"Hey," Nick spoke softly. "Everything is going to be ok."
"How do you know?" I whispered slowly looking up at him.
"Because I'm your best friend. Best friend's know these things." He smiled. Sure it was a lame excuse but that's exactly what I needed to hear. "No matter what, even if he bails, me, Nikki, Dani, Mandy, Trace and Kev never will."
"Promise?"
"Of course" Nikki smiled at me.
(Nick's POV)
After a good fifteen to twenty minutes of catching up; Chloe stood up.
"Sorry guys, but I should get going." She exclaimed.
"Aw why?" Nikki pouted. "Don't leave me here with this dofus!"
"HEY!" I exclaimed. Chloe and Nikki just laughed at me, hmph whatever!
"Really," Chloe said grabbing her purse. "I should go. Greg is coming over for a movie and dinner later."
Nikki and I stood up too. "Oh fine," Nikki sighed as she hugged Chloe. When their hug was done I gave her one of my own.
"I'll text you guys later," She promised walking out. Thankfully the paparazzi had yet to show up. Nikki and I sat back down and talked for a while longer finishing our coffee.
"You ready?" I asked my girlfriend about twenty minutes later.
"Yeah I just have to use the restroom." I nodded as she stood up and made her way to the restroom.
I stood and threw our cups away and that's when I noticed something. I couldn't turn away, I just kept staring. Not really believing my eyes.
"Nick?" Nikki was suddenly neck to me. I didn't answer and when she gasped I knew she saw the same thing I do.
There standing in line with his arms around a blonde girl was Greg. And that blonde girl in his arms was not Chloe.
"What are we going to do?" Nikki whispered.
"I'm going to," I began as Greg leaned down and kissed the girl. "Kill him. Let's go."
O SNAP! SHIT IS ABOUT TO GO DOWN! Haha, anyway what do you think Nick will do? Please review. I will start typing when I get three reviews.
Love you all.
Ash.
