"Daddy! Mommy!" Grace exclaimed, running into her parents bedroom early on Sunday morning. She hopped onto her father's side of the bed, landing straight onto his stomach, which elicited a groan from him.
"Oops," Grace said apologetically when she saw the grimace on his face. "I'm sorry, Daddy."
"It's okay, honey," he croaked, gently picking her up and moving her in between him and Eddie, who hadn't woken up from the commotion. "Just be careful next time, okay? Why are you awake anyways? It's only six."
"It's Easter, today!" she said happily. "We have to go to church with Pop-Pop and Grandpa then find eggs at their house! Don't you remember?"
Jamie smiled, "Of course I remember. But that's not until twelve o'clock today."
Her face fell, "Oh. Well what do we do now?"
"We go back to sleep," he replied with a yawn. "At least until eight."
"Can I stay here with you and Mommy?" she asked, flashing her blue eyes that he always fell for. He and Eddie were trying to be more strict about making her and Conor stay in their beds when it was time to sleep but when they were giving the look that Grace was giving her father at the moment, it was very hard not to give in.
"Okay fine," he relented, scooting over to make more space for the four year old. She laid down and burrowed into his side. Jamie pressed a kiss to the top of her head as they both drifted off to sleep.
A few hours later, the youngest Reagan family dressed in their Easter finest arrived at church. Jamie and Conor were matching in light blue polo shirts and pants while Eddie and Grace matched in floral dresses.
"Well look at this fine looking family," Henry said with a wide smile.
"We try our best," Eddie joked, pulling Conor higher up on her hip.
"When are we going to look for the eggs?" Grace questioned impatiently, thinking about her lone Easter basket that was left behind in the car.
"After church, sweetie," Frank promised, running a hand over her long perfect ringlet curls. The four year old's hair had just started to turn curly, just like her father's around the same age. "The Easter bunny left a lot of eggs at our house for you and Conor to get."
"I can't wait!" Then, she took her grandpa's hand and held onto it as they waited to go inside.
"She's been wanting to go egg hunting since six o'clock this morning," Jamie commented with a small laugh. "She woke me up this morning ready to go."
Danny laughed, "Reminds me of someone else at the same age. Right Erin?"
She nodded, "It was always me or Joe who Jamie would wake up every holiday. He was always afraid to wake up Danny because one time he literally threw him out of the room."
"And his mother and Betty chewed him out for weeks after he did that," Henry replied.
"And I'll do it again so don't mess with me," Danny joked.
Grace suddenly let go of her grandpa's hand and protectively wrapped her arms around Jamie's leg. "Don't throw my Daddy!" she warned, glaring at her godfather.
Danny put his hands up in surrender while everyone laughed, "Okay. Okay. I won't. Gosh, she looks like Eddie when she makes that face."
Eddie smiled, "My girl."
"Okay, I think the eggs are pretty well hidden," Danny announced as he and Sean walked back into the house. "Grace is going to have to do some serious climbing for that gold egg."
"Danny!" Erin exclaimed. "Please don't tell me you put the gold egg up in the tree. She's four!"
"Okay… I didn't put the gold egg up in tree…" he replied simply.
Erin widened her eyes at him.
"Of course I didn't put the gold egg up in the tree Erin!" he continued. "I put it where she can reach it."
"You better have."
"Are we ready yet?" Eddie asked as she came out of front hallway where her and Jamie were sitting with Grace and Conor while the eggs were being hidden. "There is a very impatient little girl in there who wants some Easter eggs."
"We're ready," Erin said.
The family filed out into the backyard to watch the kids in action. Grace ran off on her own and required occasional assistance from her Uncle Danny while Eddie helped Conor. Erin was the designated photographer while Jamie stood with Frank and Henry.
"Look Daddy!" Grace exclaimed, holding up a sparkly pink egg to show her father.
"I see that, honey," Jamie responded with a smile. "Good job. Put it in your basket. You still have a lot more to find."
The four year old nodded, placed the egg in her basket, and ran off to look for more.
Danny and Sean made a little section of the yard just for Conor, so he could grab eggs at his own pace. The seven month old was intrigued by each egg he grabbed and would take a few minutes to look over it before moving on to the next one.
"Over ten years ago, you told me that you hoped that you didn't let the best thing that ever happened to you walk out the door," Frank said suddenly as he stepped close to his son. "Do you think that now?"
Jamie looked out in the yard at his little family. He was truly a lucky man in every sense of the word. The best thing never walked out the door, it was actually right in front of him. He had a wonderful wife who he loved even more than the day he married her, a daughter who stole his heart from the moment she was born, and a son who filled the final piece of their family.
"No… I don't. I think the best thing was waiting for me all along but I just needed to be patient," he said.
"And you were," Frank replied, clasping his shoulder. "You have a wonderful family son and I'm glad that I'm still here to get to see it."
Jamie flashed a small smile, "Thank you Dad."
