MARSHALL LEE MUM INTRODUCTION!
Ashley growled impatiently, pacing around her flat as she huffed, brushing her silver hair from her face, her chest heaving with anger. She regretted ever supporting Marshall's dream to become a musician, to become an artist if she knew this would blow up in her face. She had hoped they could fix things, she was a different person and they were adults, or supposed to be. How dare Marshall embarrass her like this, she came to him for help and he wrote a song about her that people were still singing about. She couldn't escape it, she knew the songs were about her, who else would he be writing songs about? All because of their breakup and this new boytoy he was involved with, she bet that pink haired softy was loving every second of this. Someone else had taken her place in Marshall's heart, stealing his attention and making him happier than her. He no longer remembered her, he had tried to forget her and saw her as the villain in his story. Like she hadn't had feelings for Marshall, like they hadn't been together since high school, first love. So what that she didn't want other people checking him out, anyone else would feel the same way about their partner. She knew that people found Marshall attractive, she had seen the looks people gave him when they were out, other women flirting and men trying to buy him a drink. Anyone would feel that way about someone else wanting to seduce them. When she got clingy, glared at people or tried to confront them, he would get angry at her. But he dumped her, cut her off and removed himself from her life, he moved out, moved on and blocked her on everything he had, even changed his number but she found it. Hoping to salvage their relationship, hoping to repair it, but she was met with disappointment. Now he was all cosy with a fellow teacher, all loved up and forgot all about her, he treated this guy like he was the moon and she was the villain. But she was the bad person?
"We lived together for crying out loud, he was my Marshie Pie, the love of my life! How am I supposed to forget that!" she snapped, throwing things angrily in frustration. Simone, that decrepit librarian that raised him even hated her, putting ideas into his mind that she was rotten and he could do better. Coming between them when it had nothing to do with them. How would she know anything about love? Didn't her ex boyfriend leave her for being a neurotic psycho? Bertie, her ex boyfriend whom she had been in love with, after she adopted Marshall they tried to raise him together but for unknown reasons their relationship ended. But she never disclosed why. All of Marshall's friends hated her but what did she care? They always glared at her, whispered about her or gave her dirty looks. She wanted to get back together, she still had feelings for him, they could be happy and she would help him achieve his dreams. Real love, not whatever obsession he had with that guy Gumball, she could make him happier and she knew it. She hated knowing that Marshall had feelings for him, was involved with him. When she still loved him, when she was still waiting for him, hoping he would change his mind and they could work things out. She thought they had something together. He was writing songs for Gumball, he never wrote them for her, he was putting his heart and soul into writing lyrics for this guy. He was writing songs about her but nowhere near as romantic, instead his words for her were filled with hate. He was cuddling up to Gumball and getting all lovey dovey with him. He was utterly smitten with this Gumball guy, like she was rotten fruit and he had found nirvana. But he had no interest in her being part of his life anymore, like he was ashamed of her. It didn't make any sense.
"Milday, some surprising news has been informed to us"
Helena Abadeer brushed her hair from her face reflectively, she hadn't heard from her son in years, running the family business was a tiring matter and she worked full time, her sons antics were of no interest to her. She had always known he had so much potential as her only son, that he would achieve amazing things someday. He was a smart boy and his powers she had passed down to him grew stronger everyday and yet he still chose to live in the shadows. Instead of wishing to follow her example he decided to strike out on his own, raised by a family friend instead. He repressed his true potential for so long but in recent years he had begun to accept himself, becoming stronger and yet isolated himself from her. A librarian and scientist by the name of Simone Petrikov, she was a bright, sensitive woman whom she respected. She cared immensely for her son and was a good maternal figure, so she allowed the woman to raise her child while paying visits on occasion. However, Simone became hostile towards her, claiming that Helena didn't truly care for her son or appreciate him the way she should have. During his high school years he had been involved with a lovely demon girl named Ashley, she was interested in magic and enjoyed a life of mischief and embraced chaos. But for whatever reason her son never explained they broke up. He never gave any details and for months had been an emotional wreck. Had he moved on already? She wondered who the lucky lady was.
"What bothers has my son got into now? Living up to the family name and finally finding his roots in chaos?" she smiled. She knew little of what had become of his new life, aside from what details she could muster, trying to gather what information she could. She knew he had a fiery spirit, a passion for life, a sense of mischief and secretly denied his chaotic side. He loved having fun, he had a soft side just like his father had, embracing his emotions. But that was what made him weak, he refused to acknowledge that his rage made him stronger, that hatred fuelled him, that he could have used his misfortunate as power.
The servant coughed "Well, to the best of our knowledge ma'am he's still working in music, though he's using his talents as a high school teacher"
Helena frowned, of all the career choices he could have made, he went for something as mundane as education? She expected so much more from him and yet he continued to disappoint her. Her son had been skilled in music from a young age, even gifted the family axe as a coming of age ceremony, he turned it into a guitar and used it as a musical tool. Such a waste, he could have been an efficient fighter, he could have worked in business and used his skills for something better. But instead of making a name for himself he was currently teaching ignorant, hopeless teenagers about music, instead of choosing a more prolific path. He could be so much more, he was intellectual, perceptive, cunning and mischievous, but he did nothing with those skills. He was her flesh and blood, she wanted him to succeed and he was setting himself up for failure "I see" she huffed.
"He's begun to perform live with his guitar for audiences, he's gaining traction with his songs, he's even making it to some streaming platforms" the servant explained.
Helena smiled, so he was being paid to perform now? He was forming an income from the people he played live music for, meaning he was developing repeat businesses from venues. That made a change; until now he'd been a nobody performing for free in front of bored audiences who barely noticed him. Now he was becoming more popular, he was getting attention, he was getting noticed. No wonder Ashley would be upset. "So, he's out living his musician dreams? How long will this last?" she chuckled, she hadn't seen him in some time, perhaps it was time for a visit.
"So since you burned her live by performing those songs Ashley hasn't harassed you?" Gumball smirked, there was no way she could possibly avoid or escape this. Loads of people had used their phones at the venue, taking videos, pictures and more, sharing this memory. Marshall had started to block loads of accounts of people attempting to flirt with him, making it clear he was taken. Marshall had welcomed fans of his music, his lyrics and his skills, but anyone who pushed boundaries and attempted to make a pass at him, drew the line. The only person for him was Bubba, the person who loved him most. Popular songs spread fast and with the rise of social media and digital platforms, she would be notified fast, reminded of the success of her ex without her. He was blossoming into his happiest self and she hated it. Surely she would be complaining to him soon enough, whining that Bubba was a bad influence. She'd made it clear she didn't like him, not that he cared, so long as he was with Marshall, he was the winner.
"Dead silence, it's the dream" Marshall smirked, it was the best thing that had ever happened to him, she would darken his doorway no longer. She was too embarrassed to hold accountability for her actions and too stubborn to apologise. She'd always been that kind of person, never holding herself accountable. She was in love with the idea of him, dating a musician and hoping to live the roadie dream of partying and chaos. But she had no comprehension to separate reality from the dream.
Gumball swallowed, just the memory of her was enough to send an unpleasant feeling over him. Wishing he could just erase his brain of any inkling of her existence, cleanse both of them of her. He hoped to never cross paths with Ashley again, she treated him like a competition, like Marshall would come running back to her. She was the most immature problematic person he had ever met. He was aware Marshall was bisexual, with a history of attraction towards both genders, he had no idea what other men and women he had dated before him, but he didn't care. It was Marshall's past and he respected his privacy, much like how Gumball never spoke about his past romances or crushes with Marshall, the latter did the same. Only less the subject was brought up or they wanted to speak about it did it become an issue. Ashley was his longterm partner for years, but with her being a rotten batshit psycho, he had understandably broken up with her and moved on with his life. He saw her as a memory he wanted to forget, a choice he regretted making. He'd made a life for himself that he was proud of, in a place where he loved what he did and he was closer to achieving his dreams. How he had tolerated dating a biphobic, self obsessed, narcissistic stalker was beyond him, that he had changed so much of himself to appease her was awful. Demanding everything from him and giving nothing back in return, she waltzed into his life as if they never broke up, hoping to patch up the pieces. Thinking only of her own needs, feelings and demands, completely ignoring his. Like she wasn't a home wrecker.
"What's up Bub?" Marshall asked, he could always tell when something bothered Bubba, he was always an intellectual and reflective person. But when Gumball was upset, he threw himself into his work, becoming his main focus in hopes of avoiding his feelings. Distancing himself from reality and finding ways to cope.
"No it's just... you're such a loyal and emotional person, I don't know how you ever liked someone like her" Bubba asked. Marshall was always there for someone when they needed them most, he was always willing to make someone laugh or smile. He cared immensely for those he was close to and showed it in actions, he was a very protective person. He wore his heart on his sleeve, using practical jokes to tease people. But he was softer than he let on, he often used it as a shield to hide vulnerability. Someone like Ashley who disregarded everyone's feelings, made it all about herself, he had no idea how Marshall could stand her.
Marshall smiled sadly, the person he was now vs the person he was as a teenager were so very different. He had changed, grown up, matured and realised he deserved way better. "Internalised biphobia, young naive teenage mindset, mummy issues... god I could go on" he laughed sadly. He had known he also liked men for so long, but he repressed it and was frightened of the reactions of people around him. But the longer he repressed it the stronger it became until he couldn't hide it anymore. The most supportive person in his life was Simone. Ashley had never truly loved him for who he was, just the image that he was, she hated when he was anything but the person she wanted him to be.
"Did she know about... Simone and your mum?" Gumball asked, surely dating someone for so long she had to know about his past. She had to know about his father passing away, his mother being absent in his life.
Marshall huffed "She knew I didn't talk about my mum, but she always said we needed to kiss and make up, she kept pressing about meeting her which led to a lot of fights. But she disrespected Simone, a lot. Saying she coddled me, that she wasn't my real mum, that she wasn't family. That was my breaking point". She assumed it was just some normal fight, she assumed he was being stubborn and didn't want to admit he was in the wrong. She had no comprehension of how serious the fight actually was. Trying to insert herself into the conversation and making it worse. He remembered screaming at her as soon as she insulted Simone, transforming into a monster to get her to leave.
Gumball squeezed his hand softly, he knew someday he would meet Marshall's mother inevitably but for now that could wait. He knew Marshall had issues with his mother and he respected that, he never pressed on it. To have a partner so disrespecting of your privacy to become to invasive had to be suffocating for anyone. "I'm sorry Marshall" he soothed
Marshall smiled pulling Bubba closer and nuzzling him, he felt so safe and comforted with Bubba, he took care of him, he supported him. He was patient, understanding, but his jealousy was cute. He showed how much he loved and trusted Marshall, but also hated anyone else attempting to become flirtatious with him. He'd choose Gumball over anyone else every time. "Eh, it's not so bad, I cast aside a monster for a prince, fair trade" he smirked. Bubba blushed, he was calling him a prince? Not that he was complaining he just didn't know how to cope.
Helena sighed, she never planned on visiting her son, she had sent invitations to him for dinners and reunions, attempts to reconcile where they could speak together. He was her only child and any chance of having more was failed as soon as her husband became ill. She had tried to bond with him in every way she could consider, even on the anniversary of her ex husbands death. She and Eric had met at a party many years ago, she was charmed by him, he wasn't intimidated or frightened by the fact she was a demon. A being of inhuman power and status, that she was ruler of the nightosphere. He was a very confidently spoken man, he didn't play mind games and he was honest about his intentions. He sought a wife, family and happy life, he didn't want a complicated marriage. When she conversed with him about her life he didn't seem bothered, at times he even found her amusing, able to keep up with her conversation. They were both on the same page about what they wanted from one another. He became a house husband, he was very close to their son Marshall Lee, he was always nurturing and caring for their son, prudent and protective. They were able to speak honestly with one another and at times she even put him in his place. When she had to work late, she came home to their son curled up in his fathers arms, sometimes having read stories, her husband singing him a lullaby or watching a film together. Though at times she worried Eric coddled their son too much, which was why he was always so emotional. But then raising a son like hers, a half demon, it was already a difficult task.
She was already a working woman when she met him, but after marrying him it became even worse. The demands kept coming and she didn't know how much she could fulfil. Eric complained she was never home enough, that Marshall Lee needed a mothers love, he missed her. Helena explained she had work, she was the boss, she had responsibilities and being absent from home would be normal. Marshall Lee was her son and she cared for him, but he was to take over for her someday and would experience the same life. She had been called "Heartless" by her husband, unable to understand the emotions of others, seeing everyone as her pawns. Never making time for their son or family, and yet somehow he still loved her. Eric stated that she was prioritising work way too much, she was the boss and she could make time off. She couldn't see that Marshall Lee was feeling neglected and lonely, constantly asking when she was coming home and if she hated spending time with them. Marshall was already showing the signs that he was confused and upset as to why his mother no longer wanted to stay home.
Though a rational woman who always made clear choices and never let her emotions overwhelm her, she was also cold, unfeeling and never able to perceive the emotions of others, or how her actions affected others. She never got flustered or riled up at meetings and was able to get her work done efficiently. She never lost her cool and she never lashed out at people, but when she was angry you knew about it. But that also caused people to be scared of her. Her one redeeming factor being that she did love her husband and son, just terrible at showing it. She wished for her son to follow in her footsteps and nurtured this from a young age, but Eric pressed that Marshall should make his own decisions. She loved to tease him, taught him to use his powers in the best way she could and recorded all she could of his developing years. Calling him "Baby" and "Munchkin", names he hated as he got older. However, after her husband was diagnosed with an illness, her attitude changed, she became a worse version than she was before. She closed in on herself, distant, emotional and neglected Marshall Lee. She became snappy, short tempered, colder, and avoided Marshall Lee regularly, focusing on her work and going to the doctors for updates on her husbands condition. While her son remained close to Eric the entire time, until she decided to intervene. She knew he would never recover, he was in decline and it would only get worse. For the first time in years they had a heart to heart about their future, the wellbeing of their son.
Eric didn't want his son to watch him decline, sending him away to live with Simone Petrikov for his own wellbeing, something he still resented her for. She packed all of his belongings, making sure nothing was left behind and mades sure they had a decent two bedroom flat. Despite his cries of complaint, tantrums and screams for her, she never took him back. Though she periodically visited, she officially made Simone his godmother and had her care for him. Marshall Lee would be happier with Simone, she had no children of her own and she would take care of him. While she handled all the legalities of her husband's death, all the complication's that her son was too young to understand at the time. She actively tried to be part of his life in small ways, letters, funds, phone calls and lunch dates, hoping to see updates and progress in his life. Simone did update her and notified her about changes in his life which she appreciated, but being absent he no longer believed she cared. No matter how much she expressed she loved him, he didn't want anything to do with her. The last she heard he was dating Ashley, a lesser demon girl with an attitude problem, according to Marshall. Though she hadn't heard of his current partners since, all she wanted was for her son to succeed and all he ever did was get into trouble. Perhaps she should visit him.
"Marshall, I have stuff to do" Gumball sighed, he had domestics to do around the house, he had been looking at lesson plans. He needed to stop lazing about at some point and actually do something motivating as comfortable as he was. He needed to get up, he needed to get things done and yet here he was lying around and wasting the day. Marshall was very comfortable and he was enjoying the attention but he couldn't do nothing for hours. He could make some lunch, they could watch a film together, anything. They could go on a date, get some lunch together, they could visit Simone, whatever he wanted.
"I know..." Marshall muttered, sometimes doing nothing was the best, just forgetting about time and focus, to enjoy the simple things. He wondered if Bubba knew how to turn off his brain sometimes. He overworked himself way too much and never gave himself a break, he deserved to be spoiled. Bubba was always doing nice things for him, but he always got embarrassed if the gesture was returned. He wondered what Bubba's relationship with his parents was like, he never spoke about his family, so he could only assume they weren't on speaking terms.
"And it's very hard to do those things while you're wrapped around me like a human pretzel" Gumball sighed, he was wound around him like a snake. Keeping him pinned to the bed unable to escape, making sure he couldn't leave. He swore he had never met someone as childish as Marshall Lee, how he sabotaged him without ever having to try. If Marshall wanted something he would find ways to get it, he was just that charming and convincing. Marshall was stronger than he appeared, but then that had to do with his demon bloodline. He wondered if Marshall could transform too, he'd never seen it but he assumed he would look cool.
"Stop being so darn cuddly then Bubba" Marshall hummed fondly, Gumball always smelled so sweet, reminding him of something from his childhood. He was always so warm and soft, making him feel safe, he just looked into those eyes of his and his heart fluttered. He felt like he could be vulnerable with Bubba, he could truly open up to him and know he was safe, he'd never felt like that with anyone before. His mother had never shown him this kind of affection, after his father passed away he had been all alone with nobody but himself. It got better after Simone adopted him but as he got older he never found that same kind of affection in a partner, but with Gumball it was different.
Gumball groaned, how clingy Marshall got sometimes never failed to surprise him, he loved cuddles, kisses, hugs, holding hands, a very affectionate partner. But then due to his emotionally negligent childhood was the reason for this, seeking the love he never had growing up. Marshall was lonelier than he admitted, his childhood even more so, despite how cocky and confident he appeared at times. It hid a complicated fragility that he had begun to show to Bubba. "Five more minutes" Gumball agreed wearily, what harm could it do?
"Thank you Bubba" Marshall hummed, content at his boyfriends response.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the front door surprising them both, their peace and quiet had been disturbed once and for all. Both of them sighed heavily, expecting it to be Ashley come to complain about Marshall's performance and slander of her through songs. Gumball wondered if they should move just to spite her so she wouldn't be able to find them. "Did you invite guests?" Gumball asked, he didn't know any of Marshall's friends outside of work and he would have preferred warning beforehand. He hadn't had any time to prepare and he wasn't in the mood for company.
"Nope" Marshall pressed, popping his lips, he had no idea who would be calling at a time like this and he hoped they left soon. They were disturbing his alone time with Gumball. He was tempted to scare them off just so they never came back.
"Munchkin? Open the door, I can sense you hiding in there" a familiar voice cooed, he was being very rude right now and she had raised him better.
Marshall stiffened, it just kept coming, one thing after another, he couldn't get a break from it. His entire body turning rigid, his cheeks paled, trying to control his breathing so he didn't have a panic attack. No, no, maybe if he closed his eyes and wished hard enough she would be gone. She couldn't be here, not again, no way, he kept minimum contact with her and made sure she wasn't following him on socials. But then with how much snooping she did she would have found him anyway. The school had all his public records. What was she doing here? How? She'd abandoned him after his dad died, she tossed him aside and sent him to live with Simone permanently. She seemingly wanted nothing to do with him and saw him as a burden to her life. Threw him out of the house and then vanished from his life, no matter how much he tried to reach out or find her she remained out of reach. And yet periodically still appeared in his life, acting as if she hadn't neglected him for the past decade and left him to fend for himself. The person who gave him his powers, not that he had any choice in the matter.
"Munchkin, let me in, don't make me wait now" the voice pressed
Marshall sat up, shaking slightly and groaning under his breath, he just wanted to disappear, hide somewhere he couldn't be found "First Ashley, now her? This is a nightmare" he groaned. His ex girlfriend and now his only living parent? Why was he so popular? Did everyone just sniff out his current happiness, seeking to ruin it? He couldn't have one thing to himself.
"Who is that?" Gumball asked, he had never seen Marshall so scared before, so edgy. He looked like he was about to have a panic attack, wide eyed and frightened. He was worried to touch him in case he flinched, he looked so small. He didn't know what had happened to frighten him, but whoever was on the other side of that door was responsible. It wasn't Ashley, he knew that for certain.
Marshall stared at him, wide eyes, pleading, he didn't care if they hid in the flat in silence. If they sneaked out somehow, whatever it took to hide. He refused to bring Bubba into this mess, it was far too complicated for him to understand. But he couldn't exactly lie about it, that would only lead to a fight "My mum" he muttered. The parent he had spent years trying to forget, trying to erase from his memory, who was responsible for so much of his trauma.
Gumball's eyes widened, his brain clicking quickly to what was going on, oh knew Marshall Lee had issues with his mother, which was why he was legally adopted by Simone. He had assumed they were estranged or she had abandoned him, and yet here she was appearing abruptly into their lives. It seemed all of Marshall's history was uncovering itself after they began to date, first his ex now this. "Do you want to hide? Pretend we aren't in? Turn her away? What do you want to do?" he asked. They could barricade themselves in, turn on the music really loud, make an excuse of some kind? He was trying to think of a plan such short notice.
Marshall groaned "We can't turn her away, she's powerful, she's the reason I'm like this... she's dangerous. If she finds out about you she'll invade on your life too, she's so invasive. I... glob, the best we can do is be hospitable and hope she leaves". Her powers were stronger than his, she would just invite herself in somehow, intimidate them in demon mode and traumatise Bubba. He knew what his mother was capable of and he wouldn't put Bubba through that. He knew she would become nosy about Gumball, but he didn't want her scaring him off, not when he was so happy.
Gumball smiles, times like this he needed to support Marshall more than ever, help him through this with a beaming smile. "I'll make tea and I think I have some leftover cake" he smiled. He had the good leaves hidden somewhere which he saved for special occasions which this certainly was. They didn't have much but he could make a nice spread for afternoon tea at least. Whatever made this easy for Marshall, so they weren't completely caught off guard.
Marshall smiled weakly "Glob I'd be lost without you"
Helena threw her arms around Marshall in delight, pressing her cheek to his face affectionately, he had gotten so big she barely recognised him. Where had all the time gone? He'd grown up so fast "Marshall! My little munchkin! Mama's missed her baby boy" she sang. Helena Abadeer had pale blue skin, a similar shade to Marshall Lee's, long silky black hair with a blue tint that fell down her back with a widow's peak. Piercing red eyes showing her demon bloodline and piercing white fangs to match her son. She was taller than her son, looming over him by a few inches, a curvy and busty figure, her immortality keeping her vital and yet appeared to be a woman in her early 40's. She wore a dark violet suit, with a jacket, pencil skirt and a white blouse, wearing a white pearl necklace with a red ruby centre, black stockings and red heels. To any casual observer she looked like a middle aged business woman with remarkable skin.
Marshall sighed, his mother had always been an affectionate woman, but on her terms and was always absent. He would never understand how his parents met or what his father saw in her, but she was still a parent. She was always working, rarely had time for him or his dad, most of his memories were collectively about his father. The times they acted like a family were far and few between, dinners, birthdays, days out, his father always making excuses for her. And when his father was dying, she sent him away, she never comforted him, they never discussed it and she never supported him. He'd never forgiven her for that, that he had to grieve alone "What are you doing here mum?".
Helena frowned, pulling away to stare at him in the eye, she had never heard this sort of tone from Marshall before. Where had this attitude come from? Her tone becoming stern "You became a music teacher? You're a musician? You work at a school? Marshall you're gifted with my demon blood and plenty of skills and power! You have the charm to become a famous artist, live lavishly with everything you could ever want! But you live in a small flat, you work on minimum wage at a crappy school and you play at small gigs in bars!" she scolded. She was a powerful and prominent demon, her son had the same power she did and yet all he did was party and get into trouble. He may have been skilled in many areas and yet he wasted his time. She wondered if he had any genuine goals or achievements, she had never been able to understand him. He could use his powers to get anything his heart desired. "You were gifted the family bass, you couldn't get a job at a quality education school, you're wasting what skills you have and you're spending your life working with teenagers!".
Marshall wilted, glaring at his mum coldly, she had never approved of his choices and she had always made that clear. "I'm happy mum, I get to inspire kids, I get to live my dreams on my terms and write music I like. Hell, I'm working on streaming more to become popular and get paid for it" he huffed. He could educate and inspire young minds, he could earn wages and pay his rent until he finally achieved his dreams. Adulting was anything but easy and given he'd supported himself for half his life, he'd done well. His mother had no right to judge his choices given she was never around to see him make them.
She sighed wearily, shaking her head in disbelief, he'd wasted so much of his life making mistakes and stumbling. He'd inherited so much of her personality and she was proud of that. But instead of becoming the powerful demon lord he could be, he chose to hide himself away instead. She had no idea why Marshall never came to her, why he never asked for her guidance. Just what had Simone led her son to do, what lessons had she taught him? What nonsense had she placed in his head? "I was informed that you and Ashley are no longer involved, rather a shame given her lovely appearance. But there are better women out there for you munchkin, I always thought she was a snake" she sighed. She had been pretty, though she was also into grunge like her son. She always had something to complain about, her magic skills were poor and she was a slacker. She leeched off of others instead of actually growing and gaining powers herself.
Marshall stared in disbelief, of all the things he saw himself agreeing on with his mother, his first thought wouldn't have been his toxic ex. He'd never heard his mother so vehemently insult another person before, "You... disliked Ashley?" he muttered. He'd never spoken to her about his ex, she wasn't in his life around that time, but then Simone must have informed her.
Helena scoffed "Munchkin, whatever your hostility towards me may be, I loved your father, I knew that the moment I met him. He wanted nothing more than to be a house husband and as a working woman that was ideal. He was a deeply nurturing man and always wanted the best for you". Her relationship with her ex husband was complicated, she loved him for who he was and vice versa. She knew that her son and husband had a bond, losing him had deeply hurt him and she knew that. She had always hoped her son would find someone who loved him as much as she had his father. Marshall softened, seeing his mother in this new light, hearing her speak about his father, it was strange. "Now, let me see this new beau of yours" she smiled, they had delayed long enough and she was due an introduction.
"Uh..." Marshall panicked
Marshall sat awkwardly on the couch, hugging a pillow to his chest as he curled up on the couch, wishing he was anywhere else. His skin felt like it was crawling, he wanted to escape, it was like she was silently observing and judging him. Helena sat opposite him, watching Bubba quietly as he prepared tea, black tea with some baked goods. She observed him curiously, her eyes never once leaving the pinked haired boy as he prepared the food. He was a half candy pixie, she could tell from the sweet smell that lingered from him, he did have a delectable aroma, he was very skilled in the kitchen, well mannered and very charming indeed. She could see why her son would be so interested in him, as well as a decent supply of red for him to consume. He had someone who would be able to take care of him.
"I'm sorry for such ill prepared hospitality so short notice" Bubba apologised, if he had been given more warning, things could have gone a lot smoother. He didn't know why he was apologising to her, she was the one who arrived unannounced. Placing three cups down with a teapot with a fresh blend, some freshly made strawberry cupcakes and homemade icing. He'd placed all his energy and time into making them presentable and luckily he had some leftover. Gumball then sat beside Marshall quietly, pouring the tea into the cups before handing the first one to Helena. He then handed Marshall a cupcake to which the latter took it tentatively, he could sense Marshall was anxious and he needed something to ease him.
Helena sipped her tea quietly, he was a very skilled young man indeed, he had a fine taste in tea and cooking. "So, Bubba Gumball is that right? You're a home economics teacher at my sons current employment" she asked. His skills far surpassed someone of merely a high school teacher, she expected him to have his own business or even work in a bakery. This was beyond what an average teenager would be able to make. Like her son he was wasting his skills in a school when he could achieve more. Did either of them understand their worth?
Gumball smiled, her eyes were bearing into him and he had no idea if she was judging him as food or for his personality. "Yes Ma'am, I'm a teacher at the school, though I do hope to open my own bakery someday and produce homemade goods to the public". He lacked the funding to gain property to start his own business as well as repairs, but then many business owners worked from home these days. There was so much that went into owning a business and it wasn't as easy as people assumed it would be. He had only ever tested his baking on Marshall Lee, Fionna and Cake. He'd never been able to share his creations with other people and get that exposure.
"And this is how you became involved with my son?" she asked, so they both worked at the same school, leading to their blossoming romance and her son becoming infatuated with him. At least something good had come out of it, her son certainly appeared more mature than he used to be. She hadn't expected her son to meet someone like Gumball, it was rare you found any young teachers these days at all.
Gumball blushed, caught off guard by her bluntness "I... um... it's how I started dating Marshall yes" he stammered. He'd been crushing on Marshall Lee for an embarrassingly long time, watching him from afar and daydreaming about dating him. Avoiding him out of embarrassment and crying himself to sleep about his own cowardice. Little did he know Marshall Lee had been crushing on him back, frustrated at the naivety of the latter. Thanks to his best friend, they had finally become a couple. Looking back on how this all started, he couldn't help but laugh at their antics.
Marshall sighed, the last thing he wanted was his mum intimidating Gumball "I was the one who was crushing on him first, I was too scared to make a move but it all worked out in the end. I'm happy mum, can't you accept that?" he huffed. It was thanks to Monochromicorn giving him the push he needed, informing him that Gumball was interested in him. After that he asked Bubba for coffee and one thing led to another. He couldn't imagine a life where he never became this happy, where Bubba ended up as the one that got away.
Helena blinked, just what did Marshall lee assume she came here for? She wasn't trying to chase Gumball off nor was she about to say she would set him up with someone else. He was an adult and free to make his own choices. Was it so bad she was invested in his life and wanted to meet the people closest to him? "Marshall, regardless of the gender of your current lover, all I wish to know is of your present romantic encounters" she asked. Her son had always been awkward, shy and wore his heart on his sleeve, being a demon if his emotions got too out of control he transformed. But now he was comfortable with a person who loved him for who he was. She never cared about the gender of the person he dated, so long as he was happy. If he was to take over in her footsteps someday, the person he was with needed to bring out the best in him, guiding and supporting him.
Gumball bit his lip and tried not to laugh, this was not what he expected of Marshall Lee's mother at all, in fact he didn't know what to make of her. The most awkward way of saying "Cool, you're bisexual, it's chill".
Marshall stared in disbelief, the overbearing mother who had been self centred and neglectful was nowhere to be seen. This woman who prioritised her work, who ate his snacks, was always missing for work. It was like she had been replaced with a less crappy model. "You aren't here to babble on about Ashley, my past relationships or my life choices?" he questioned. Part of his intuition warned him that something was about to go down, something inside him screamed that trouble was coming. And yet part of him wanted to ignore it and believe she had changed.
Helena scoffed, she was aware Marshall had many mistakes in his life, too many to count. He had began a punk faze as a teenager, angry at the world and eager for attention. He began dating a girl who brought out the worst in him and just fed into toxicity. He partied way too much, got drunk all the time and had no desire to consider his future. After a while he began to wake up, abandoned his immature tendencies and tried to make something of himself. Only now was he trying to find his best self, but he was barely scratching the surface of what he could be. "He's an adult, he makes his own income, he's well mannered, a good cook and he clearly loves you. He's husband material". Bubba snorted in amusement and hid his face in his hand, blushing shyly, his mother had just stated he was son-in-law material. She had given her blessing for them to marry, if it ever did happen. He hadn't expected this when he met Mrs Abadeer but he wasn't the least bit bored.
"MUM!" Marshall snapped, his face flushing pink, just what the hell was she saying in front of Bubba? They had been dating nearly a year, they were living together. They were teachers and they were still finding their footing, neither of them knew what the future held. He had no idea why his mum insisted on embarrassing him, for a moment he had actually thought she was capable of being kind to him.
Helena rolled her eyes, she hated when he threw tantrums like this, it got him nowhere and she was sick of hearing it. "Don't raise your voice Munchkin, it's rude" she scolded. She was only looking out for him, doing what was best to make him happy and make sure he made the right choices.
Marshall huffed, folding his arms in annoyance as he relented to staying quiet until his mother left. This was going to be the longest visit of his life. He hated when his mother tried to parent him, despite how little she did when he needed it. Growing up she was like a shadow, rarely there, never made her presence known but he could always sense her. She was always working, always busy, never had time for him, always on the phone with a client or coworker, always coming home strange hours. Sometimes she would come into his room, watch him sleep and then say goodnight. When he came into her office to see her she would ruffle his head, give him a kiss and tell him she was busy. Even when he cried, gave her big eyes or begged her, she would send him on his way. She never had time for him, he was nearly always with his dad, desperate for her attention and affection she never gave. His father always said that his mother was busy, she needed to work, she needed to make money. His father eased his wounds and tried to make him feel as loved as possible. But even he looked sad at how little his wife spent time with either of them. Overworking himself to the point he became ill and frail, the only parent who loved him. Watching him crumble before his eyes and knowing he couldn't do a thing about it. Losing his dad had killed him, and then his mother just sent him away to live with Simone. Now she wanted to act like a mum?
Gumball saw how much this was affecting Marshall, he was starting to realise why Marshall never wanted to speak about his family. The absent mother who came and left as she pleased, love bombing him and then neglecting him. The mum who always prioritised her work and never him, the woman who wanted her to follow his footsteps and never cared about his dreams. Who saddled him with someone else before going off to live her own life, she had the gall to attempt parenting him when she never cared to begin with. He couldn't sit in silence while she demeaned his boyfriend, making him feel small and worthless. "In all respect Mrs Abadeer, someone who was absent for a majority of their sons life has no right to dictate his choices or assume whom he's dating" he stated. She was never there for her son when it mattered, she was never present in his life, so why did his choices matter to her?
Helena was stunned into silence, still holding her tea. Marshall stared at Bubba in awe, his eyes full of surprise, love and adoration, in disbelief that Bubba had said that to her. When Gumball lost his temper he held nothing back, shooting barbs of insults like weapons in the direction of his enemy. He had no idea of what kind of relationship Bubba had with his family, if he had any siblings, he never spoke about his personal life and he respected that. Yet here he was defending him against his mother.
"You never actively mothered Marshall Lee the way you should have, while I respect you are a working mother. If you prioritise your career over your child, you're neglecting your son" he pressed coldly. She never showed him the love, care and nurturing guidance he so desperately needed, she was never a good mother to him where it counted. The fact that Marshall was uncomfortable around her and any affection she showed, proved she had messed up. The echoing silence of the flat was loud, filling the spaces and hanging in the air, the drip of the tap and the tick of the clock. The previous energy of the flat changed and warped into something uglier. Marshall felt his heart aching with love for Gumball, falling in love all over again, his eyes beaming with tenderness. If they were alone he would have smothered Bubba by now in kisses and ripped his clothes off.
Helena placed down her cup, staring down Gumball silently, the tension in the air strong, she folded her arms across her chest firmly. She had never been spoken to like that by anyone before. Someone who confronted her with such attitude, such fearlessness, puffing up their chest. She took a deep breath "OH HE HAS ATTITUDE!" she yelled loudly, beaming. This person wasn't afraid to speak their mind despite the consequences. Gumball stared in awe, this wasn't the response he was expecting from Helena, he had expected to be fighting her. Marshall stared at her in shock, expecting her to be mad. "Compared to that two faced ass kisser you were dating in high school, he's a little rebel, he's fearless! He's not scared to fight for you" Helena laughed. Gumball seemed like the kind of person to put him in his place, keep him on a leash. He would push Marshall Lee in the right direction and keep him out of trouble. But he had no interest in trying to impress her and yet he could be civil with her, something she admired.
Marshall blinked, he had assumed this would lead to an argument where his mother would transform into her monstrous self. Where he would be protecting his boyfriend from his mother. Instead she was laughing her ass off at his boyfriends courage. So his mother approved of Bubba, that was a relief.
Helena sipped her tea in content, her son was happy and that was what mattered most, he had found a partner who was his equal. They were complete opposites, nothing alike whatsoever and yet they meshed well together. One was a soft, pastel, scientific baking nerd, her son was a punk rock, grungey musician, but they brought out the best in the other. He had found someone that made him happy. "So, I assume you're still in contact with Miss Petrikov, the woman whom I left to care for you?". She had heard about her sons improvement with Simone, as much as it pained her to leave him. Simone gave him the push she never could and got him on the right track. Marshall wouldn't be the person he was now without her.
Marshall shifted "She works at the school I'm employed at, she's been taking care of me. She knows about Bubba, before we got together, I'm sure she's our biggest supporter" he smiled. She was the mother he never had, she legally adopted him and raised him to the best of her abilities. After she lost Bertie her longterm partner after a bad mental health patch, she became a single parent. She had watched over him his entire life, she had even pushed him to ask out Bubba.
Helena hummed, so he wasn't alone, he had been watched over and nurtured well, he had a support network. But she got the feeling there was more to this, that there was something he wasn't telling her "Nobody giving you trouble?" she pressed.
Marshall winced, this was far more complicated than he cared for, diving into ancient history he had tried to forget. He had no idea why his mum was so curious. Oh god how was he supposed to explain this? That Ashley was trying to reenter his life? He brushed his hair from his face nervously "Uh.. I mean Bubba was being harassed by students in the past but he's started to stand up to them, obviously as a queer couple we tolerate harassment. But... the worst is Ashley, she.. she's found me again. She's not... exactly pleased I'm with Bubba" he huffed. Students were just teenagers being jerks, they had all sorts of personal issues but desired to make it Bubba's problem. It wasn't his job to parent them, just to guide them in the right direction. Their lives would always be complicated and there was nothing they could change about it.
Helena's gaze sharpened, why hadn't he mentioned this earlier? This was the sort of thing she was worried about "She's harassing you?" she asked. Someone causing trouble for the Abadeer family didn't bode well for them. This was a pest she would need to take care of.
"Nothing I can't handle" he sighed, she just liked to whine and cry for attention and when he ignored her she lashed out. She'd always been immature he just learned to avoid her. He was a different person, she was in love with the person he used to be. He had no interest in involving himself in her life anymore.
Helena's eyes darkened, her eyes glowing red ominously, it seemed her son had found himself in more trouble than she predicted. She wished he could have informed her so she could handle this. A malevolent aura surrounding her as she gazed at Marshall "Ashley, that lower ranking powerless demon girl whom acted like a clingy brat all hours and kissed my ass" she mumbled. She acted like she was a big shot, throwing her weight around and acting like a child. In comparison to herself and her son, she was a weakling. Bubba swallowed, suddenly he felt an evident sense of fear thanks to Marshall Lee's mother, this overwhelming demonic aura radiating from her, like something from nightmares. Did Marshall have this kind of power? The room darkened, shadows growing from the walls and taking shape. She glared at Marshall, she needed to know the truth, she wouldn't allow a pest to bother her son "Is she giving you trouble munchkin?" she pressed.
Gumball wrapped his arms around Marshall protectively, shielding him as best she could from her powers. He didn't know how any of this worked but he didn't like it. "She's just a brat with attitude, she's not happy that I'm with Marshall, but she's merely jealous of the fact I make your son happier than she ever could. I may not be part demon but I love your son" he babbled. She wanted to bully Marshall, control him, have a good little pet that did what she wanted. She didn't care about his feelings in the slightest. She didn't like that he'd moved on with his life and forgot her. She knew Marshall Lee was in love with Gumball, she could sense it. She hated knowing that she had been replaced.
Helena blinked, her power lessening, the shadows lessening and returning to normal, she averted her gaze to Gumball who was protectively hugging her son. He had jumped into harms way without hesitation, shielding Marshall despite the fact he wasn't weak. He was evidently scared but his first response was to protect Marshall, Ashley dragged her son around, was demanding, bratty and selfish, she acted high and mighty but in reality was a coward. Gumball had a heart, one that cared immensely for her son and he'd proven that. "I approve" she smirked
"Huh?" Marshall and Gumball questioned in unison
"This boy just threw himself into the fire to protect you when I threatened to summon my demonic power to hunt down your ex, knowing you'd try and stop me". She hadn't expected this kind of bravery, she didn't know what Gumball was capable of. But now she did, he just needed to channel that courage more. She needed to know he was in good hands, she would never accept him dating another leech like his last partner.
"Was that a test?!" Marshall yelled, nearly jumping off the couch, just what in the glob was she thinking? No warning? What if Bubba had run for the hills?
Helena shook her head "Oh no munchkin, I fully intend to pay your ex a visit and give her a piece of my mind. But I'm now comforted by the fact you're with a boy who'll do anything to protect you". She would be sure Ashley remembered her, was reminded of what she put her son through and which family she embarrassed.
Marshall collapsed on the couch wearily, his mother had finally blessedly left him in peace, she was finally gone and he hoped she wouldn't be coming back anytime soon. He felt like he could sleep for weeks, how she caused so much stress in such a short period of time he had no idea. She had paid him a brief but exhausting visit, but she approved of Bubba which was the most important thing and she was Ashley's problem now. He would happily hibernate for a while until he felt like his energy had returned, hiding away from his problems until he felt better. "Marshall?" Gumball asked patiently, he'd been through a lot lately and it had finally piled up. So much stress wasn't good for one person. If he wanted to take a nap he would understand, if he wanted to be alone he would give him some peace. His mother was certainly a character and he now understood why Marshall had low contact with her. But the worst was over now.
"Sorry Bubba, whenever my mum visits... I'm always exhausted afterwards" Marshall mumbled, he felt bad for ignoring him, but he needed rest. His mother drained him, and not using her powers. She was an emotional leech, she always made him feel so tired, for whatever reason she always just had to make his life stressful. She was either overbearing and affectionate, or distant and negligent. This was why he never wanted Bubba to meet his family.
"She's... interesting" Bubba laughed awkwardly, she certainly had a character and he had no interest in her becoming a regular part of their lives. She had at least accepted them, which meant she wasn't an enemy. But her intrusiveness was an issue. The ruler of the nightosphere, a potent demon and the parent of his lover, which made her his in-law. If they had a future together sadly she would be involved. He was relieved to know Marshall Lee would never meet his parents, his father was a narcissist and always demeaned Gumball, turning his family against him until Bubba had enough. Leaving the family home, attending university and making his own life. His mother though a kind person, she was easily swayed by his father and always let him control her. He loved his mother but so long as she enabled his father he would never speak to her.
"She's either emotionally unavailable or she's overly affectionate" Marshall sighed, she would either be a stranger in his life and forget he even existed, or she would hound him and follow him around like a lost puppy. He never knew what to do with her and how to handle her, he just made the best of it.
"No wonder you're estranged" Gumball sighed, he had good reasons to not speak to his mother, she wasn't exactly winning mother of the year. She was a workaholic, she neglected her son growing up and even more so after her husband never tried to bond or connect with her son and when she eventually did, he had outgrown the need for a mother. Marshall still longed for a bond with his mother, but he was aware of her toxic and problematic traits. He was wary of letting her back into his life and the consequences it would have.
"Sorry you had to get dragged into that, seems lately all of my personal history keeps being thrown at you" he huffed. It just kept coming and he couldn't stop them, all the ugly parts he had tried to forget. He was still bitter at Ashley for selling his childhood monkey Hambo whom had been sold for money, he had never gotten Hambo back and he was still angry. The happiest part of his childhood, the first toy he was ever given by Simone after she adopted him. He had hoped to hide so much of this from Gumball, he didn't need to get involved in this.
Gumball smiled, couples often faced difficult life decisions together, they just seemed to be happening sooner than they expected. "I mean...it's not all bad, I'm learning to become more courageous because of you, finding courage in myself I never knew existed". He had always kept his head down, been socially awkward and kept to himself, letting everyone push him around, including his students. He had focused on nothing but his work, only forming a close friendship with Monochromicorn. But after meeting Marshall Lee, after bonding with him and entering his world, he was finding courage in himself. Learning all sorts of new things and becoming braver.
Marshall softened, he felt like he was melting on the inside, god how did Bubba manage to be so cute and so hot at the same time? He had found the perfect guy who reminded him of how lucky he was every single day. He slowly sat up, resting his head on Bubba's chest, feeling himself recharging already, listening to Bubba's heartbeat. He felt like this was a dream he never wanted to wake up from "I love you Bubba" he mumbled.
Bubba blushed, Marshall had always kept his personal life closed off from everyone at work, wearing the persona of the cool teacher around his students. Wearing a smile and shrugging off his problems, like nothing ever bothered him, seemingly perfect to his students. But after dating him, after getting to know him, he realised that Marshall wasn't as strong as he appeared, keeping his personal life and problems separate from his work "I love you too Marshall" he hummed.
Marshall smiled to himself, he could become addicted to how Gumball smelled, he was the sweetest thing ever. Ashley had never smelled this good, maybe it was just the genetics of being a fairy. "I'll agree with her on one thing, you smell delicious". He always found himself cuddling Bubba and his familiar scent was imprinted onto his brain, something he would never be able to forget.
Bubba felt his cheeks darken, hiding his face in Marshall's hair, this was a huge leap out of his comfort zone. He never would have considered something like this before, but Marshall had inspired this courage in him. If he didn't take this chance he knew he would just regret it later on. "You know... Marshall I've been thinking..." Bubba trailed off. If this didn't work, at least they tried but he would rather attempt and face failure than never try at all.
"Hmmm?" Marshall asked
"You... you've been working really hard on your music, life performances and now you're even being recorded for online videos by fans..." Bubba mumbled. He'd been writing new lyrics constantly, he'd been focusing all of his creative energy into new music. Sheets, notes and all sorts strewn everywhere, messing with his guitar, humming to himself and contemplating new shows. He'd been hit by creative energy lately and he was so proud. But more people deserved to have his music available, new fans from all across the country and world who would appreciate him.
"Uh huh?" Marshall pressed, he never expected to get this much attention from his music, he was used to being anonymous. Just another wasted talent that would never be notice, passing through life as if he never mattered. His mother never supported his dreams, so he had to find it on his own, forming his own path. Gumball had been the biggest help through all of this, going above and beyond as a partner.
"Maybe... maybe you could try recording on streaming platforms? Youtube, maybe Spotify? They pay artists and it might get you more exposure" Bubba suggested. They could make a professional account, get some photography done, work on album covers. Start off with singles and see if they got attention before making them popular and seeing if they went viral. There were all sorts of music platforms these days and that would get him exposure. Maybe through that he could get an agent that could help him professionally. They had all sorts of tools they could use, they just needed to figure it out.
Marshall stiffened, pulling away to stare into his eyes "Bubba, you're a globbing genius!" he yelled. How had he never considered this? He loved listening to music, there were all sorts of connections that the modern teen used for music. Just getting himself out there would help his future career so much, he loved writing his own songs, with enough hard work and connections he could create accounts and upload his music there. He wouldn't just get exposure through recordings, though that would help him get noticed, as well as attract some fans. Loads of artists these days were getting success like this. Bubba smiled, he loved seeing Marshall so eager about his music, he was truly skilled and he deserved more praise. He would do whatever he could to support and help him. Marshall deserved his talents to be recognised and appreciated. "However..." Marshall smiled, raising his hand to point it at Bubba, he wasn't doing this alone. He wouldn't leave Gumball in the shadows while he took all the success. Bubba raised an eyebrow, wondering what could be the matter. "You deserve more attention too" he teased, Gumball was an amazing chef and cook, he was skilled with sweets the most. Loads of people had a sweet tooth and Bubba would be exactly what they needed.
"Uh... I mean...I'm fine..."Gumball smiled, he was just a baker, loads of people were. He could work bake sales, he could make a cookbook, but he really wanted his own business. Everyone had to start somewhere, but in comparison to a musician, he was nothing. He would rather his boyfriend create the music he loved, he could figure out his own future. He was just happy he got to test his creations on Marshall and get feedback on how to improve.
Marshall sighed, Bubba was always undermining himself, ignoring his talents as if he was a loser. He was the best baker he knew, he had so many ideas he could share with others. He was highly unappreciated at the school and way too qualified to be a home ec teacher. "Bubba, you're an amazing cook, you love baking and you put so much effort into it" he reminded Bubba. Bubba put his heart and soul into the baking he made, he truly had so much inspiration behind each creation he made. He was way too educated to be working in a school, what with all his academics and grades.
"It's just fun, I'm a teacher, I already have a career" Bubba babbled, he found comfort and escapism in his baking, he could forget about all the stresses of work that just melted away. He loved being able to focus his imagination into the wonders of baking, creating delicious delicacies that he could share with his friends. It was like he was feeding his inner chid, able to embrace a part of himself that he had never been able to show anyone.
"Bubba, you bake things, you create things like nothing I've ever seen, it's made with so much love and affection. We can totally make you a business account on the grams for your baking. Viral short videos too" he praised. Bubba had so much passion for his work, he truly loved being able to inspire someone else. But his efforts were often ignored by his students and fellow teachers, he was told just to use simple lesson plans. If he was able to reach his desired audience on the internet of likeminded people, his skills would be far more appreciated than they were now.
Gumball blushed, hearing Marshall say such sweet things about him always warmed his heart. But even more so he was offering to help boost his cooking and give him a better audience? "You... You'd do that for me?" he stammered. He'd always daydreamed of the life where he became a professional baker, but here he was actually being able to possibly achieve it.
Marshall scoffed "Bubba, you've supported my dreams, you've listened to me writing songs and even gone to my concerts. I'd be a shitty boyfriend if I didn't return the favour" he huffed. He'd attended concerts with him, inspired his music, he'd followed him through it all. He was here trying to get him on streaming platforms and even stood up to his mother. There was no way he couldn't return the favour. He wanted Gumball to succeed too, he deserved it. And the best part was he would be able to sample all of the creations.
Bubba smiled fondly, they were both pushing boundaries and escaping their comfort zones, pressing past what scared them most and chasing their dreams. Nobody had ever supported or believed in him like Marshall did. Marshall would be focusing on his music and he would be focusing on his cooking. Both forming an income from their individual passions "Its a deal..." he agreed.
Marshall wrapped his arms tighter around Bubba, smothering his face in kisses "I'm so proud of you Bubba" he grinned
"Hey Cake, I need a favour?" Gumball asked, Cake was very involved in social media, she knew all about trends, hashtags and what was popular. Due to the fact that her career involved social media, she had to keep up to date an educated on the matter. If anyone was going to help him with this it was going to be Cake, she would help them get the start they needed.
"Bubba? Is that you? How have you been honey? Fionna and I haven't heard from you in ages, it's like you dropped off the map?!" Cake called. He'd become so involved in his work he'd stopped spending time with them. What with being bullied by his students, his endless pining after Marshall Lee and just feeling hopelessly lost, he hadn't really reached out to anyone. They'd all been worried about him but he was doing so much better and she was happy for him. For him to contact them out of the blue so suddenly, it was such a strange feeling.
"Is that Gumball?" Fionna yelled, her voice filled with excitement.
Gumball sighed, since becoming involved with Marshall, he'd stopped paying as much attention to his colleagues. Fionna was a good friend to him and they had a lot of fun. Despite her social awkwardness and opposite interests she had a big heart. Fiona was an athletic person and loved to teach the kids about physical ed and how to better themselves to stay active. He knew she had feelings for him that he would never reciprocate, if she found out he was dating her best friend Marshall, she'd be devastated. Monochromicorn had told cake due to them already dating but she had promised to keep it a secret and so far she had, she understood is was between them and they would tell people when they were ready. She knew all about Marshall's gigs and how he was expanding his hobbies, she had already clicked that the songs he was writing were inspired by Gumball. She knew how happy they were together and she supported them. She'd known about Fionna's girly crush on Gumball for ages, but from what she could tell Bubba never felt the same. No matter how much she tried to flirt with Gumball or ask him out he had always turned her down, but for a good reason. He was in love with someone else, and she wasn't his type.
Gumball smiled nervously, he knew Fiona would be listening and he didn't want to reveal he was dating Gumball to her yet. He would tell her when he was ready, they both would. "Yeah... sorry I've been so poor at communicating... I've been... occupied with other things" he mumbled. He'd been ignoring his friends lately and he needed to apologise for that, he needed to make it up to them. Maybe he could invite them to Marshall's next gig whenever it would be, ask them over for dinner or something. Just a reason to bond and catch up with all that had been going on. Marshall smirked in the background knowingly, Fionna had been his best friend for ages, they joked around all the time. He'd known about her crush on Gumball for ages, but what sucked was they both liked the same person. He knew she would be upset to know he'd taken her crush, but sadly it never would have worked out between her and Gumball.
"So, what can we do for you? What sagely advice do you need?" she smiled, she'd do her best to help anyway she could but she needed to know what was happening first. If she went into this blindly she wouldn't give them the right advice they needed to hear.
"Marshall and I are wanting to expand, god knows I've been a teacher for ages but it's never gotten me anywhere or felt successful" Gumball huffed. They were both teachers, working away in a building educating students and yet it wasn't as fulfilling for them as people made it out to be. Not that all teachers hated their jobs, some loved it, they enjoyed inspiring new students and teaching them. But it wasn't their forever goal, it wasn't what they wanted, it wasn't what they saw in their future. They wanted more and they were trying to reach that.
"Honey, your talents at that school are wasted, you're teaching a bunch of mindless hooligans how to cook. None of them care enough" Cake sighed. She had heard his students gossiping and badmouthing him, she and Fionna had lost it on them more than once. She'd reported them for disrespecting Gumball and it had been noted but not enough was done. If Gumball could find the career that made him happiest and got him to leave that place, she would be his biggest fan. The best thing he could do was find a better job and get out of there.
"Told you" Marshall replied, even Cake agreed with him, that Gumball was way too overqualified for the job he did. He deserved better and he was wasting his time in that place. Though it payed the bills and was the reason they had met, they could achieve something better together.
Gumball rolled his eyes "The thing is cake, Marshall has been performing a lot lately, getting his songs out there, so we thought about streaming virally to get more exposure" he explained. He needed her help, he knew this wouldn't happen overnight and many things took time to build. But he wanted to do this, they both did and there was no looking back. They wanted to show the world their talents, make memories and become the version of themselves that was happiest.
Cake squealed in the background "Oh baby that's amazing news! Everyone's streaming these days, gets so much more attention. You gotta do the same with your baking" she pressed.
"See, she agrees!" Marshall argued, the only way either of them were going to get attention was by using social media and streaming, it was how all the modern adults and teens found media. If Gumball hoped to get anyone involved in his cooking and recipes, he needed to make videos of them, set up a channel. He needed to get exposure and use social media to his advantage to get people interested in him.
"Ok, I get it Marshall, I'll make the accounts" Gumball huffed, this was going to take a lot of work, a lot of patience and a lot of time. This was going to be stressful for them all but it would eventually pay off. But they couldn't do this alone, they would need all the support they could get. "The thing is cake, we need help with this, would you be able to give us advice on how to go about this?" he asked.
"I'd be delighted sweetie, anything you need. I'm so excited for this project" cake cheered before hanging up
Gumball hung up, they were really doing this, he was scared out of his mind and yet he was excited, he hadn't felt like this in a long time. He would try to make a career as an independent creator, giving audiences designs of his cakes and seeing if he could make a business out of it. He'd certainly get more respect than he did as a teacher. He felt like pinching himself to see if this was actually a dream or not, that he would wake up and none of this had happened. He cuddled Marshall Lee happily.
"You can do it Bubba, hell we can combine businesses and sell your cakes at my gig, or make merch out of them. People love that" Marshall soothed. Cake sales and T shirts would go down so eagerly with fans, he could take orders for birthday cakes, cupcakes, muffins and more. He could work at his own pace and make his own income. They could give one another ideas, helping each other through tough spots.
Gumball smiled, he had so many ideas and finally he could be his own boss, he could do what made him happiest. He doubted any of his students would miss him at all, the only people who would be surprised would be the teachers. "I know I'm just..." he trailed off, he had no words to explain this feeling. He had no idea what the future would hold and that excited him, the unknown territory of life.
"Scared" Marshall hummed, he'd felt like this at many stages of his life, for better and for worse. When his father got sick before he passed away, when his mother sent him to live with Simone Petrikov, when he was still grieving over the loss and abandonment. He'd been scared, he had no idea of what to do. He didn't know why or how his papa got sick, he didn't know how to make it better. He wanted his papa to come back, he wanted his mother to take him home. Hell he'd been scared to approach Bubba for so long and tell him how he felt.
"I've been a teacher for years, it's all I've known, I'm not a performer like you" he stammered, he had never considered another career choice, he never thought he was cut out for anything. He would never achieve anything more, but here he was considering other options. But he was scared of failure, scared of messing up and making the wrong choice.
Marshall cupped his face, staring into his purple eyes carefully, his reddish brown eyes intense, he knew the prospects of this had to be intimidating. He knew that leaving something behind felt sad and scary, but it was a brand new chapter and for the best. Things would work out and they had one another for support. "Bubba, sometimes making choices is scary, sometimes stepping out of the comfort zone is frightening, but it can lead to amazing things".Change wasn't always bad, it wasn't always going to end badly, adversity and hope were always something to appreciate. Knowing that no matter what came your way it would work out.
Gumball smiled, nuzzling his face against Marshall Lee's hands, feeling the anxiety dissipate, all he had to do was gaze into those orbs and he felt at home. He always felt so much braver with Marshall than he ever had alone, since dating him he had done all sorts of things he never had before. Now they were talking about business plans. "You do know you'll be fighting off fans soon, they'll be so clingy" Bubba laughed. He was already popular with fangirls at live shows, if he began to make music on streaming sites he was going to get more attention. Forget Ashley he would have other women begging to go out with him.
Marshall pouted, as much as he appreciated any fans who came to his live shows, he made it clear he was taken. He had stated that he had written songs for his boyfriend before shows. It was so secret he was bisexual and taken by a man. But no matter who threw themselves at him he wasn't interested "I'm taken by a handsome baker, and besides like I'd want anyone else but you, nobody else is nearly as adorable" he huffed. He'd been pining over Gumball for months, to the point that Simone was teasing him for how smitten he was. During that time nobody else made him feel that way, not even strangers he had been on dates with.
"I dunno, girls love a man who can cook, I may not be interested in women but that doesn't mean you won't need to fight them off" Gumball grinned. He already knew there would be women following his accounts if he started his own business, asking him for the recipes and trying to get a date. I mean the idea of making Marshall Lee jealous was amusing in many ways, but he would never leave him. Just to be able to joke about the comments left by his followers.
"Let them try" Marshall smirked, he would happily fight them off, nobody would be able to have Gumball. They could appreciate his baking all they wanted but he would be the only person in his life. Nobody could make Gumball as happy as he did and he knew it. Bubba burst into laughter, gripping his stomach as tears spiked his eyes and he tried to steady himself, none of this made sense, what the hell was he doing? And why did it feel so right?
