Chapter 8
The next morning, Sky awoke to someone shaking her shoulder. She turned over in bed to see Ava standing over her, talking through the toothbrush in her mouth.
"Beta' get up, its 'ing day…"
Sky stiffened before jumping out of bed, thanking Ava as she ran to the bathroom. Filled with anticipation, Sky raced through her morning routine. Ava was laughing the whole time as she witnessed Sky stumbling around in her enthusiasm.
"I know how you feel," Ava giggled, rinsing her mouth in the sink, "I felt the same way the first time me and Rochelle had our first race."
Sky laughed at her response, tying the laces on her combat boots.
"Like you've had 10 cups of coffee and are about to jump off a cliff?" Sky asked.
Sensing her nerves, Ava came over to Sky and patted her shoulder.
"I know you will do good," Ava exclaimed, "at the end of the race, we should celebrate; I know of some great places here in New York."
Ava was taken aback as Sky wrapped her into a bear hug.
"Thanks Ava, good luck to you too," Sky said as she put her down, "and yes, I would love to tour NYC with you after the race!"
"Wonderful," Ava replied, "now, let's go get breakfast, I'm starved!"
Both girls laughed together as they exited out to the main area. After piling a decent amount of food from the buffet on her plate, Sky sat down with the other navigators to eat. El Diabolo, aka Miguel, offered the seat next to him to Sky. She took his offer, though she made sure Ava got the seat between the two.
"Hola, mi amigo," Sky greeted, "you're looking good this morning."
"Muchas gracias, senorita, buenos dias," El Diablo spoke, then turning to Ava, "and good morning to you too, bella dama."
Ava blushed at the comment, muttering a thank you in response as her cheeks blushed red. Having a seat directly across the table, Oliver chuckled seeing Sky's intention.
"What's happening, Sky," Oliver greeted, raising his cup to his lips, "are you excited for the race?"
"That's an understatement," Sky replied, taking a big sip from her own mug. Though she almost spit out her coffee, laughing at Oliver's scrunched up face.
"Not to your taste, Olie?" Sky teased.
"Ugh, how hard is it to brew one good cup of tea?" Oliver said in disgust, setting his cup down hard.
"That's because its coffee," Sky chortled back. She laughed more as Oliver accidentally sloshed his tea on Tyson's plate. Though before he could retaliate, the referee showed up.
"Attention all navigators, you have exactly fifteen minutes to be downstairs," she announced, "the bus leaves at exactly 8 am, anyone who doesn't show gets left behind!"
Once she was finished, it was a frenzy of movement. Everyone finishing their food and grabbing their bags before rushing to the elevator. Once downstairs, everyone raced to the bus and jumped into their seats. Sky was thumping her leg the entire ride, just waiting to see her partner once more.
"Cálmate, mi amigo," El Diablo said to Sky, "you'll shake the bus with your nerves."
"I-I-I-I c-c-c-an't h-h-help i-i-i-i-it," Sky moaned, dragging out her words.
"How much of that disgusting brown liquid did you have this morning?" Oliver questioned, sucking on a breath mint to 'cleanse his taste buds'.
"Oh…about four cups," Sky answered, now feeling the effects of the caffeine.
"Ok mon ami, no more coffee for you," Ava advised.
"Duly noted," Sky acknowledged, now mentally kicking herself. The others on the bus having a good laugh at her expense.
"Ha ha, now look who's th8 1/2e nervous wreck?!" Tyson teased.
"Hmm…Tyson, if you worked out as much as you ran your mouth, you'd be able to get it up," Sky retorted.
This caused another round of laughter to run through the bus, now at Tyson's expense. Unknown to everyone, Tyson was boiling in his skin with rage.
"Hey Tyson, don't feel bad man," Rhett said to him.
"Yeah, it's just a chick, man," Brett said.
"Shut up you idiots," Tyson said through gritted teeth, making the twins freeze. He then turned to them both, whispering, "that chick insulted my pride, and we're going to make her, and the tractor pay!"
Staggering back in fear, the twins quickly nodded their heads at Tyson, who silently gave an evil grin towards Sky. She would have no idea what was coming for her.
