Chapter 0.7: Belated Love
Love is a very inexplicable feeling. Human beings will never fully understand how love works. It is an unconditional feeling, which does not follow logic or reason. It is a feeling that can make us feel very good or very bad. Love really is a mystery that can never be completely solved. What we know is that we all need love. And in turn, we all deserve love. No matter how long it takes us to find that person, the ideal person will come to all of us at the right time.
Our beloved Mr. Grouper is one of the most loving people in all of BubbleTucky. After all, he is the quintessential teacher of our beloved Bubble Guppies. Without him, they would not be as they are. Our teacher knew very well about loving and being loved. He experienced the love of his grandparents who decided to raise him due to the absence of Mr. G's parents. He has the love of neighbors and friends like Mr. Grumpfish (although he doesn't show it often). And of course, the guppies love him as their great friend, mentor and even a father! And yet, he only needed a love that he hadn't experienced in a long time: romantic love. The love of that special someone. And you know something? He found it in his close friend: Charlize Duncan
Duncan is a bit of a different person than Tino. She was more reserved, serious, strict and very disciplined. She takes her job and her life very seriously. This is due to her upbringing. She was raised under many rules from her strict father. And the story of both is very curious. Duncan had a crush on Tino since high school, but the fish boy wasn't the most attentive to romance actually. That's why the snail girl would try to date other boys, but Grouper was simply in her head and in her heart because of her very kind and empathetic personality. Life has its surprises and both took different directions. Tino went on to become a teacher while Duncan went on to become an educational director (in the tradition of his father's). And after many years, both would meet again during the Teenage Years of the Bubble Guppies, where both would end up admitting their feelings after many years.
After the Bubble Guppies left for their colleges, Mr. Grouper and Duncan decided to finally confirm their relationship. They both took advantage of the time to finally have the romantic relationship they longed for. Although the relationship was beautiful, both of them couldn't help but feel strange for dating at an advanced age. Neither of them were seniors, but they weren't many years away from thinking about retirement. But despite everything, both were happy. One day Mr. Grouper had a wonderful idea. And for that, he decided to talk it over with his closest friend.
"Are you talking seriously?" It was Mr. Grumpfish. They were both talking in the living room of the green fish.
"Yes, Irving. I'm thinking about it a lot but...I think it's something I want to do. I want to…propose to Charlize" Grouper said coolly. They were both silent until our teacher noticed that his friend gave a small smile and laughed a little. It was one of those few times that he laughed "Did I say something funny?"
"Hehehe…It was time. It was YEARS that I waited for you to tell me that. You two really took a long time, huh?" Mr. Grumpfish commented.
"I know, I know. But I really wanted to talk about this with you. Is it okay for you to propose to her?" Tino asked curiously.
"Why do you ask? If she has wanted you since we were teenagers" Grumpfish asked with his typical tone.
"Precisely for this reason. Look, we are already mature adults and we are almost on our way to old age. Isn't it very rare that two old people... get married? Don't you feel like it's too late?" Grouper asked.
"If you want me to be honest...it's a bit late for me. It would have been better if you two got married years ago. But...if you and Duncan are going to be happy like this...it doesn't bother me at all. I care that you two are happy. I think it's something that's up to you to decide" The green fish decided to be honest with his best friend.
"Hmmm maybe….but I need to think about this" The old teacher commented.
"It´s the best thing" Grumpfish said.
Mr. Grouper was thinking about what his old friend told him. He knew that he was no longer the ideal age to get married. He considered that he should have done it years ago. But...could it be something that will make his beloved Duncan happy? He spent several days considering the options until one day, he decided to do something unexpected for everyone. He began contacting various people to be able to talk to them. The option was a video call where several people connected to see their old friend again. I guess everyone already knows who they were. The Bubble Guppies met on the video call that Mr. Grouper had made. Everyone greeted each other happily, yet everyone knew that they had all been called for a reason.
"And what do you say? Do you think I should do this?" Mr. Grouper asked them. He explained to them about his plan.
"AHHHHHH!" Molly, Deema and Oona shouted very happily. Nonny and Urchin had to cover their ears because they were close to Molly and Deema respectively.
"Of course you should!" Goby commented.
"And why do you doubt it?" Zooli asked.
"I'm not sure, kids. I feel like it's a little late for me. Look, I am already close to old age. Duncan and I have loved each other for a long time...but due to many circumstances we haven't made any real progress until now. I feel like I've missed my opportunities and... I missed the boat" Mr. Grouper explained a bit his reasons. The young guppies were silent for a few seconds until one of them decided to speak first.
"Mr. G….It's never too late to love" Molly was the first one.
"Huh?" The big fish was confused at first.
"Mr. Grouper, don't you see? It's finally time for you to seek your own happiness" The pink haired guppy added.
"Molly´s right! You have brought happiness to everyone at BubbleTucky. Including us. You deserve to be happy with someone who really appreciates you" Deema commented.
"But... what will Duncan think about it? Really she...?" Tino asked.
"Please, Mr. Grouper. We know Duncan and we know that she loves you. She will accept you without a doubt" Goby said.
"Don't worry. We know that whatever happens, we will always be there for you. As you have been for us always" Nonny added.
"He´s right!" Zooli said with a smile. Mr. Grouper couldn't help but give a small smile when he saw how his old students had matured and also how they were willing to give him a hand.
"Thank you very much, children. I really appreciate all your support" Tino said happily.
"Go for her, champ!" Deema said excitedly.
"You can do it" Urchin added. The big fish was pleased by the pep talk from his old students. Some time later, he decided to end the video call because everyone had to leave soon. Now, with his spirits up, he was ready to propose to his old friend.
Tino got down to work! It was one of the most important moments in his life and he wanted to do it in the best way and in a simple way. He reflected on how that decision would change his life forever. Well, he was used to a lonely but full life thanks to his great friendships. He never thought that he would come to that moment. For many late, but for Mr. G it was the perfect moment. One beautiful sunny day, Mr. Grouper was in the park waiting for his dear special woman. Duncan arrived and they both had a wonderful time together. Well, they both went out to eat an ice cream and went for a walk in the park. Finally both were sitting together on a bench. They both watched the sunset carefully. Words were not necessary to express the beauty of that romantic moment. Our protagonist knew that the moment had arrived.
"Hey…C..Charlize…" Mr. Grouper said nervously.
"Huh? Yeah…Tino?...Weird…You never call me by my name" Duncan said nervously. She still wasn't good at social relationships
"Sorry…I just feel nervous, you know" Tino replied.
"Highly strung? Why do you feel that way? I mean, it's not very normal to see you like this" The snail asked curiously.
"Well...the truth is, well...Hmmmm...There's something I want to talk to you about our relationship" Mr. Grouper commented. He was a bit nervous.
"Really?" Duncan raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah….Well….You know we've known each other for many years. And that it took us a long time to progress because when I was young I wasn't clear about what I wanted...Because you were in love with me and I was more distracted by other things...But later on I began to feel something for you when we separated. I think I started to love you from that moment. I didn't know what I had until I lost it. Despite the fact that I was more focused on my vocation, I never stopped thinking about what my life would be like with you. Because no matter how many women wanted to date me, I never stopped thinking about you. And well... we were finally able to be together after so many difficult moments... And that is why I have made a firm decision" Mr. Grouper started with his speech.
"Wh..What are you talking about?" She was confused.
"Listen...maybe it's too late...maybe our relationship has been late. But I do not care about that. I want to share the rest of my life with you. I don't care that they are few years, but that they are beautiful years. So... I'll ask you this question... Charlize Duncan, do you want to be my loving wife for the rest of my life?" At that precise moment, Mr. Grouper took out a small blue box to display a beautiful engagement ring made up of a small pearl. Our snail woman did not know how to react. Her face was completely red and she couldn't find the right words.
"I..I..It..It can´t be! Are you talking seriously? I can't believe it! I don't know what to say!" Duncan is normally a person who always has an answer for everything. But at that moment, her mind and heart were playing tricks on her.
"I just need a Yes or a No. You tell me what you want... What do you say?" He smiled at her. There was an awkward silence in those seconds.
"Tino Grouper….Do you have any idea how many years I wanted to hear those words? Since I was young I expected something like this... But... now... after so many years…" Everything indicated that she would reject him until finally, she showed a smile of happiness that she showed very rarely "...I keep wanting the same. Tino, I... YES! I want to be your wife!" It was a beautiful scene, Tino decided to get closer and put the ring on her finger. And they both held hands. And we can see that Duncan was finally showing great happiness. Feeling that she hadn't shown in so long. They were both the happiest people in the world at that precise moment. After so many unfortunate events, they got the outcome they both wanted. Many minutes of beautiful silence passed until Duncan decided to take a deep breath and come back to reality. Although she is happy about her proposal, something about her began to worry her at that moment. And the fiancé of hers took notice of her.
"Duncan…is something wrong?" He asked worriedly.
"Well….Don't get me wrong, I'm really happy about the proposal and if I want to marry you...However..." Duncan said with a low tone.
"...However…" He wanted to know her worry.
"I want to marry you... but I would like to ask you a favor regarding the wedding" Duncan said a bit seriously.
"Of course! Tell me" Mr. Grouper asked kindly.
"Well…."
Time after. After many talks and planning, the day had arrived. One beautiful fall afternoon came the day of the wedding of our beloved Tino Grouper and Charlize Duncan. We will focus on a place away from BubbleTucky on the mountain, where it had a viewpoint that could be seen from a high altitude. We can see an altar arranged with various flowers and the autumn decoration gave the place a simple but beautiful atmosphere. Curiously, there were only a few people at the celebration. There were only Mr. Grouper, Mr. Grumpfish and some special guests: Gil, Goby, Nonny and Urchin! They all dressed in formal suits for the special occasion.
"How do I look?" Mr. Grouper asked.
"Hmm Hmm! Perfect! We have the most stylish boyfriend in BubbleTucky!" Urchin said with a smile. Nonny approved with a raised thumb.
"All preparations are in order" Goby added.
"Uh...Mr. Grouper? How many guests did you invite?" Gil asked curiously. Because he didn't notice anyone but them.
"We are all the ones that I wanted to be at our wedding. Only the girls and Duncan are missing" Mr. Grouper said quietly.
"But…your family…or Duncan´s family…." Gil asked nervously.
"Oh well…My only family that I know were my grandparents... may they rest in peace. And regarding Duncan's family... well... I forgot to tell you that Duncan and I decided to have an elopement" Mr. Grouper decided to tell them about their secret.
"Elopement?" Goby asked confusedly.
"It means that both of them are getting married secretly without anyone's knowledge. Not even from the relatives of both" Nonny explained.
"Yeah…She wanted a secret wedding. Duncan's family is a bit complicated" Tino answered.
"But Mr. Grouper! Don't you feel bad for not having families?" Gil was confused.
"Oh Gil! Hehehe my little guppy. You are our family!" He said with a big smile.
"Awwwww" The four boys were touched.
"Hmmmm that was moving. Tino, I´m very proud and happy for you" Mr. Grumpfish decided to share his feelings.
"Thank you for being my faithful friend during all these years" Tino smiled.
"Yeah….Duncan and you deserve the best. Very good. We are going to start" Irving said with his typical tone of voice.
Finally, the private and secret ceremony had begun. A lawyer arrived who would be in charge of marrying the couple. He and Mr. Grouper were at the altar awaiting the arrival of the bride. Mr. Grumpfish, Gil, Goby and Urchin were as honorary accompanists and Nonny was in the back in charge of the music team to put on the correct and traditional sound of a wedding. The moment arrived. Charlize Duncan arrived in her white wedding dress and next to her were the guppy girls in elegant dresses for the event.
"What a shame! Tino already saw me! I feel strange in a wedding dress at my age" Duncan said nervously with the bouquet of flowers in her hands.
"Do not say foolishness. You look fabulous!" Deema calmed her.
"You are a very beautiful bride" Oona said with a smile.
"Everything will be okay!" Zooli added.
"The time has come! Duncan, get ready! The happiest moment has just begun!" Molly said happily. The wedding march had begun! Nonny was in charge of the music. Oona decided to leave flower petals in the path of the bride while Duncan took a deep breath and decided to walk slowly straight down the aisle. She paraded alone but received the support of the guppy girls.
"Wow…" Mr. Grouper was surprised to see his bride.
"Hehehe….All yours, champ" Gil smiled mischievously and the boys decided to took their seats. The girls also decided to take a seat and greeted the boys without saying a single word. Mr. Grumpfish took his seat, and the ceremony began without much difficulty.
"Dear guests. We are here to unite Tino Grouper and Charlize Duncan in holy matrimony. There is no more important moment in the life of a couple than marriage. Which is not a very easy decision to make. This moment will mark a change in their lives, a radical change..." The ceremony continued as normal. The wedding was short and simple. That is why there are not many details of what happened in that legal speech. That's why we'll skip to the part that matters to us "...Tino Grouper, do you accept Charlize Duncan as your loving wife? Do you agree to respect and love her, through thick and thin, until death do you part?"
"Yes, I accept" Mr. G said with a smile.
"And you, Charlize Duncan…Do you accept Tino Grouper as your loving husband? Do you agree to respect and love him, through thick and thin, until death do you part?" The lawyer asked.
"Yes, I accept" Duncan said quietly.
"By the power that the State has granted me I declare you: Husband and Wife!" The lobster man said "Gentleman, you are allowed to kiss the bride" At that precise moment, the couple decided to hold hands and for the first time we saw a direct kiss between these two characters. Both decided to legalize their marriage with a short but tender kiss.
"AAAAAAWWWWWW!" Molly, Deema, Oona and Zooli said happily.
"OH YEAH! YOOHOO!" Goby, Nonny and Urchin shouted happily.
"Yuck! My ex-principal... with my favorite teacher!" Gil said feigning disgust, but it was pure humor.
"Hehehe! You two did it HEHEHEHE OHHHHHH!" Mr. Grumpfish said happily, opening his mouth a lot and blew. The breath sent Gil flying a bit.
"Ahhhhh!" The blue haired boy fell into some chairs. They all turned to see him.
"Gilly?" Molly asked worriedly.
"I'm okay!" The young man gave a thumbs up and everyone let out a few laughs.
Finally the celebration arrived. They will now both be known as Mr. and Mrs. Grouper! The Bubble Guppies and Mr. Grumpfish were excited and came out to greet them for the little party they had prepared. They prepared the dance for the newly married couple. Tino and Duncan's long-awaited waltz was performed. Which was a very sweet moment. Then came the moment that they would throw the bouquet of flowers. The four guppy girls prepared to catch the bouquet that Duncan would throw. The lucky guppy would be Molly. She, with a mischievous smile, showed the bouquet to Gil (who blushed deeply). That caused laughter from some. And in turn, it was a foreshadowing of what would happen a few years later without their knowledge. After a few meals, dances and songs... The guests decided to spend time with Mr. and Mrs. Grouper.
"I want to thank you, kids. I didn't think you guys would take the time to help us and come to our wedding" Mr. Grouper said happily.
"We would never miss this important moment for you. Also, it's beautiful to see the guppies reunited once again" Molly said excitedly.
"Of course. I know this won't last long, but we'll see each other very soon" Oona commented.
"Thank you very much, Guppies. You are definitely my family" Mr. Grouper said with a big smile.
"Awwwww"
"Group hug!" Deema shouted. The 8 guppies hugged Mr. Grouper. They lasted like this for a few seconds while the ex-director only saw them from afar "Hey! You are already family too!"
"M..Me? Well yeah but…" The snail was nervous.
"Well, we are the "children" of Mr. G. And since you are already his wife... we are your "children" too" Oona said with a tender tone of voice.
"R..Right, I guess? But I don't want to…" Mrs. Grouper wanted to say an excuse.
"Come!" Deema took her hand and the guppies hugged her too. The woman felt a bit awkward at first, but she finally accepted the group hug. After that, she gave a small but sincere smile.
"Hehe…Thanks, guppies!" Charlize replied.
"Congratulations, you two!" Grumpfish hugged them. And he smiled too "You have no idea how long I've been waiting for this moment"
"I think everyone. But...it's never too late to make a big decision" Mr. Grouper took his new wife's hand.
"I think the wait...was worth it...Finally" Mrs. Grouper smiled at him.
"I love you, Charlize"
"I love you too, Tino"
And both decided to end the scene with a warm kiss on the lips without caring that they were watching. In this way, this couple would form a special bond at a slightly advanced age. The wedding was a bit secret because of Duncan's decision. But why? For now we have a few things clear. Mr. Grouper is now happier with the new "Mrs. Grouper" of his. And that this would be a very brief Bubble Guppies reunion. Due to time constraints, they could not enjoy their reunion and many were forced to return to their universities after the wedding celebration. However, we know that this will be the last time the Bubble Guppies will meet. And it wouldn't be the last time they would meet their old mentor again. Well we all know it's coming soon.

A short story about a romance that we haven't seen much of in Teen Years. I also wanted to write a little more about our beloved Mr. Grouper. This chapter is special because I want to dedicate it to my dear loyal follower: PrimroseRaspberry. Follower who had a birthday on March 22.
